It’s not easy for “underground” bands to release DVD’s. Without major labels behind them who have money to invest in their roster, it’s pretty much a dream for the majority of bands, no matter how much demand there is from fans who are weary of trying to watch their favourite bands on YouTube, at the mercy of the vagaries of their internet connections and with poor sound quality. So Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have taken matters into their own hands, and released a DVD themselves, but in a format that self-financing would permit - DVD-r.
Titled “A Doorway Between Worlds” Chapter 1, the DVD contains videos for tracks from BLODARV’s albums “Soulcollector”, “Linaria Amlech”, “Civitas Diaboli” and the newly released “Gâst”, as well as a live recording from their show at Club Brutal, in Aarhus Denmark, filmed in December of last year. The DVD will be available exclusively through the band’s webshop at http://blodarvshop.bigcartel.com/
Videos featured on the “A Doorway Between Worlds” Chapter 1, which is DVD player and PC compatible and is limited to 666 hand-numbered copies, as follows:
1) A Snowy Night In November (Music Video)
2) I Blaek Og Blod (Music Video)
3) Blood red Rocks (Live Video)
4) Empty Fucking Life (Music Video)
5) Civitas Diaboli (Music Video)
6) Heksen Nitiria Amlech (Musik Video)
7) Those Who Speaks In Minds (Slide W Live Pics)
8) Langt Vaek Fra Livet (Slide W Live Pics)
Commenting on the decision to release a DVD in this format, frontman and founder Hugin said: “The question we were most frequently asked during 2012 was if we ever intended to release all our official videos, which normally reside on YouTube, as a physical DVD. We wanted to start this year by making a little special “Something” for our loyal fans and with that in mind we gathered together eight of our most popular underground videos, and made the DVD-r “A Doorway Between Worlds” Chapter 1, so that everyone has a chance to enjoy it on their DVD player with CD quality sound, on a proper sized screen and without having to wait for any annoying buffering or deal with bad internet connection, which affect many of our fans in different parts of the world”. Danish Black Metallers BLODSARV have released a video for “A Snowy Night In November”, a track from their newly released album “Gâst”. The video was filmed during January of this year in the Northland region of Bornholm, the island home of founder and frontman Hugin, and features appearances from BLODARV members Satinae Ma (clean vocals) and Pestilens (lead guitars), as well as Hugin himself. “A Snowy Night In November” can be seen on the band’s YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/9Y9CRabYO8Q and below.
“Gâst”, which is the band’s fourth full-length album, was released on Self Mutilation Services at the end of last year, and, like all of BLODARV’s releases, contains a mix of tracks in both Danish and English. Drawing his inspiration from the myths and legends and rich history of Bornholm, Hugin’s lyrics take the listener on a journey through a world inhabited by powerful demons, haunted souls and tragic destinies. The title, “Gâst”, is in the Bornholmsk (Burgundian) dialect and refers to a type of a ghost demon or energy which has the ability to possess mortals and inspire in much the same way as a muse.
BLODARV recently expanded its lineup with the addition of Fjorgynn on drums and HUUL on live session bass. The band is pretty much self-sufficient when it comes to recording both albums and videos as well as producing artwork, with all the work being done at Hugin’s purpose-built Hammer and Art Studios, which also provides a multitude of services for bands wanting to record in the spectacular settings that the island of Bornholm provides. “Gâst”, the fourth full-length album from the veteran Danish Black Metallers BLODARV will be released at precisely 12:12 pm CET on the twelfth of December 2012 – the last time in the 21st Century that the time, date, month and year all correspond. Released on Self Mutilation Services in both a regular CD format and a limited edition A5 format with different artwork, “Gâst” is accompanied by a 16 page booklet, which includes lyrics. Limited edition merchandise including a T-Shirt, patch and pin will also be available. Track listing for “Gâst”, which runs for 45 minutes, is as follows:
1. Indelukket
2. A Snowy Night In November
3. I Blaek Og Blod
4. Korset Paa Baalet
5. The Heart Of Art
6. Lonely Journey
7. Surrounded By Dust
8. Into The Halls Of Orion
Whilst BLODARV’s line up has just been expanded with the addition of FJORGYNN on drums and live is session member HUUL, the lineup on “Gâst” comprises BLODARV core members HUGIN on vocals, bass, guitars and effects, SATINAE MA on female vocals and PESTILENS on lead guitar. Session studio drums are by YNLEBORGAZ . All artwork relating to “Gâst” is by BLODARV founder and frontman Hugin, who is also responsible for the recording, mixing and engineering, which were carried out at his Hammer Art and studios on his home island of Bornholm.
As with previous BLODARV releases “Gâst” contains a mix of tracks in both Danish and English, and allows a glimpse into the mind of Hugin through his music and his poetry. Influenced by the rich history and traditions of Bornholm, an island filled with myths and legends and beautiful, eerily evocative landscapes, Hugin leads the listeners through a world filled with powerful demons, haunted souls, tragic destinies and chilling dreams. The title itself, in the island dialect of Bornholmsk (Burgundian), refers to a “Gâst” – a type of a ghost demon or energy with the ability to possess mortals and inspire them in much the same way as a muse, with visions, stories, smells, sounds, emotions and pictures. With a release date set for early December 2012, BLODARV have today revealed the track listing and artwork for “Gâst”, the fourth full-length album from the veteran Danish Black Metallers. The eight-track album will be released in two versions on Self Mutilation Services – regular CD format and a limited edition in A5 format which will feature different artwork. Both versions come with a 16 page booklet which includes lyrics. Limited edition merchandise will also be available to mark the release. All artwork for “Gâst” is done by the blasphemer himself – BLODARV founder and frontman HUGIN. The recording, mixing and engineering were all done by HUGIN at his HammerArt and Studios, where the artwork was also produced, and which is located on the frontman’s home island of Bornholm. Tracklisting for “Gâst”, which will run for 45 minutes, is as follows:
1. Indelukket
2. A Snowy Night In November
3. I Blaek Og Blod
4. Korset Paa Baalet
5. The Heart Of Art
6. Lonely Journey
7. Surrounded By Dust
8. Into The Halls Of Orion
In the Bornholmsk (Burgundian) dialect of Bornholm a “Gâst” is a type of a ghost demon or energy that possesses a mortal and inspires them in much the same way as a muse, with visions, stories, smells, sounds, emotions and pictures. Commenting on the album, which is a powerful blend of BLODARV’s mid-tempo black metal spiced with both fast and slow tracks, Hugin had this to say: “It’s fitting that the release of “Gâst” will take place in winter, when the winds howl and the snow blankets the island of Bornholm, creating the perfect setting for an album that explores life philosophies, death, the micro and macro cosmos, and the forces of nature and power of the universe and all the energies that cling to it. Like our previous releases, the album contains a mix of tracks in both Danish and English, and is a piece full of hateful blasphemous poetry, dark visions, possessive muses, and soul-seeking demons”.
The lineup on “Gâst” comprises BLODARV core members HUGIN on vocals, bass, guitars and effects, SATINAE MA on female vocals and PESTILENS on lead guitar. Session studio drums are by YNLEBORGAZ . BLODARV’s line up has just been expanded with the addition of FJORGYNN on drums whilst live bass is handled by session member HUUL. BLODARV’s next live appearance will be on the 1st December with HORNED ALMIGHTY at the Club Brutal in Arhus, Denmark. They have also been confirmed to appear at next year’s Kvlt Fest which will be held on the 1-2 March in Odense. “Surrounded By Dust” a track from “Gâst”, together with tracks spanning BLODARV’s 14-year career can be heard on the band’s SoundCloud player at the top of the page and at http://soundcloud.com/blodarv/sets/blodarv
With a new album “Gâst” set for release later this year on Selfmutilation Services, Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have debuted a second track from what will be the band’s fourth full-length album. Unlike the previous track “I Blaek Og Blod”, which recently had its debut as a music video, the lyrics to the new track, “Surrounded by Dust”, are in English and the track can be heard on BLODARV’s SoundCloud page at http://soundcloud.com/blodarv/blodarv-surrounded-by-dust as well as on the player above.
The music and lyrics of BLODARV have always represented a very personal aspect of founder and front man Hugin’s life and beliefs. Writing both in English and Danish he gives voice to his deepest thoughts and emotions through his poetry, which in turn becomes the lyrics to his music. According Hugin “Surrounded by Dust” is in a way much more representative of the album as a whole: “The “I Blaek Og Blod” video caught some of our fans by surprise as the track is not as dark as they have come to expect from us, but as always in BLODARV we create various atmospheres, to fit the music to the lyrics, and “Surrounded by Dust” takes us firmly back into the darkness. It is, in fact, one of the slower tracks on the album and is one of my personal favourites. We finished recording the guitars for the track on the 5th of August and mixed and engineered it over the next few days, so it’s ‘smoking hot” in every sense of the word”.
BLODARV’s next live appearance will be at the Club Sick in Odense, Denmark on the 15th September supporting IMPALED NAZARENE. More information about BLODARV can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/blodarvofficial
Below you can see BLODARV’s “I Blaek Og Blod” video.
Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have released a music video for a track that is due to appear on their upcoming fourth full-length album. The video for the track “I Blaek Og Blod”, which translated means “In Ink and Blood” was filmed in Hammerknuden and amongst the evocative ruins of Hammershus on the island of Bornholm, where the band originates and where it’s founder Hugin lives. Appearing in the video are band members Satinae Ma and Pestilens along with Hugin himself, who also filmed the video and edited and produced it in the band’s HammerArt and Studios. The track itself features Huginon Vocals, Guitar and Bass, Pestilens on Lead Guitar, Satinae Ma on Female Vocals and Ynleborgaz on Session Drums. The “I Blaek Og Blod” video can be seen here or on BLODARV’s official YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/huginofblodarv
Although 1999 may be the date when the very first demo, “Murder in the Name of Satan” appeared, it’s difficult to actually set an exact date for the birth of BLODARV, which was originally formed as a solo project by Hugin. It would be more accurate to say that BLODARV is the culmination of a period of musical development that Hugin underwent whilst playing in bands such as SKJOLD, ARANTRUTH and ESSOUPI. Over the years since then BLODARV has become a fully fledged recording and live band, but it still remains the physical incarnation of Hugin’s imagination. BLODARV represents his deepest thoughts and emotions, bringing them to life through his music, but also through his poetry which becomes the band’s lyrics. Like the storytellers of old he leads the listener on a disturbing journey through a dark, evil, demonic world, peopled by lost souls, witches and demons.
Commenting on the “I Blaek Og Blod” video and the upcoming album, which will be titled “Gâst” and is set for release towards the end of 2012 on Selfmutilation Services, Hugin had this to say: “As always with BLODARV we have used both Danish and English lyrics on the album, and on this particular track the lyrics happen to be in Danish. “Gâst” itself contains material that is a lot darker than perhaps you would expect when you listen to “I Blaek Og Blod”, so the track is definitely not representative of the entire album itself. Metaphorical speaking, it’s just a chapter extracted from a complete book”.
BLODARV’s next live appearance will be at the Club Sick in Odense, Denmark on the 15th September supporting IMPALED NAZARENE. More information about BLODARV can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/blodarvofficial
Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have reached an agreement with the Slovenian underground label Nigrum Serpentis Production, for the release of a retrospective compilation that will cover ten years of the band’s history. The ten-track CD will contain various tracks from BLODARV’s pro-releases, including the bonus track “Six feet Below As She Wished For Death” which was originally written in 1996 and up to now has only been available on the first BLODARV demo “Murder in the Name of Satan”. The album is set to run for 60 minutes and comes with a twelve-page booklet containing lyrics (the band writes in both Danish and English), photos and fan art which detail the history of BLODARV, whose founder and front man Hugin lives on Bornholm, an island steeped in history and myths and legends, and whose music takes its listeners on a journey along dark paths peopled by powerful demons, haunted souls, tragic destinies and chilling dreams. Track listing for “A Demon’s Diary” as follows:

2. Daemonstormens Tid
3. Power Of A Soul
4. Where The Beast Dwell
5. Those Who Speaks In Minds
6. Heksen Nitiria Amlech
7. Sealed In Black With Silver Stars
8. Beyond Life
9. Langt Vaek Fra Livet
10. Natteskarn
*Bonus track: “Six Feet Below As She Wished For Death”
Despite an accident which smashed Hugin’s jaw and left him unable to either sing or perform live for most of 2011 while it healed, the vocalist has nevertheless been busy. Work has been progressing well on BLODARV’s next full-length album, and the band featured two previously un-released tracks on the “Shadows of Tragedy” compilation which was released on Self Mutilation Services in September of this year. Hugin himself has been working on two further projects, one being the 7” “Laesaabobbainjnj” EP from his side-project SANSÂGER for which a release date has still to be set, and the other a collaboration with Norwegian musician ELENYX (COMBATH), along with Sweden’s IT (ABRUPTUM, VONDUR, OPTHALAMIA), on the new album “Heksevind” from her NÅE project. With their frontman now once more fit and well, BLODARV will mark their return to the stage with a gig at The Rock in Copenhagen on the 26th November, supporting Germany’s ENDSTILLE. The video below is a collage of photos of BLODARV in concert in May of 2011 with the track “Natteskarn” from the “Civitas Diaboli” album.
We’re coming to the end of yet another eventful year for BLODARV, and once again, in what we hope will become a tradition, I will take a look back at the achievements, and, it has to be said, mishaps that we went through, and a look forward to the year to come.
January kicked off 2011 in what looked like a great way. YNLEBORGAZ was fit and at full power after an enforced rest following knee surgery and once again BLODARV was ready to hit the stage. Dedicated Booking had already booked us two shows, the first of which took place in Copenhagen at Beta and was a more than successful return to live performing for the band – (photo left by Ravna).
With our second show set to take place at PH-Cafeen in May, disaster unfortunately struck again, and the show had to be cancelled when my jaw, which was already recovering from earlier surgery, was badly broken following an accident. With some bone needing to be removed from my jaw, recovery from this was obviously not going to happen overnight. In fact, it took half a year, during which time not only was I unable to sing, but I was also not able to eat anything more exciting than soup.
The time was not entirely wasted however, and despite not being able to rehearse I was still able to start mixing the drum tracks for the next BLODARV full-length album. I had actually already composed most of the album back in 2010, and all the drums tracks had already been recorded by YNLEBORGAZ in December of that year when he visited my home and studio (HammerArt & Studio’s) on the island of Bornholm. A few months later we began recording the guitars, and the next step will be to record the bass, for which HUUL will come to the island over several weekends to lay down the bass lines. And then, of course, it will be time to do the vocals. All the lyrics have already been written, so an evil guess would be that the next full-length will probably be ready during the first half of 2012.
In between working on the new album, answering interviews, doing layouts for cover art, I was also working at getting my jaw healed again – rehearsing in small amounts alone in the studio, starting with one song in the first week, and gradually adding one extra song week by week, until I was once more fit to do a full live set-list without my jaw falling apart. The preparation paid off, and at the end of Sept 2011 I was ready to hit the stage again.
We have also, for the last 3 months, been rehearsing with a substitute drummer by the name of FJORGYNN, who will play live session drums for us on those occasions when BLODARV’s live schedule clashes with that of YNLEBORGAZ’s other band ANGANTYR. Fortunately for us FJORGYNN has turned out to be a superb live drummer for BLODARV, being able to sync with the band both in terms of his personality and his excellent drumming skills. He will make his first appearance with the band at the Rock in Copenhagen on the 26th November when BLODARV will support ENDSTILLE, which will also be my first time on stage since my injury.
The 16th of September this year saw the release of the split CD “Shadows Of Tragedy” on Self Mutilation Services. The Limited Edition CD (500 copies only) features BLODARV, GRIMLAIR, NOCTURNAL DEPRESSION, BLACK HATE & ACEDI. The two tracks contributed by BLODARV are both previously unreleased songs written at the same time as the band’s “Civitas Diaboli” album, which was itself released on Self Mutilation Services in 2009. The first track, “Sharpstone Mountain”, is effectively a prelude to the tale recounted in the “Blood Red Rocks” track from “Civitas Diaboli”, whilst the second track, “I Hulernes Rige” is a melancholy acoustic song, which gives our female vocalist SATINAE MA a chance to take the lead on vocals.
As if enough hadn’t happened in September, including the offer to release a retrospective compilation, which I will come back to later, I also started to collaborate on the upcoming NÅE Project. This came about after years of sharing musical ideas and visions with ELENYX (COMBATH). Actually it’s turned into something of a Nordic alliance with Norway’s ELENYX, who founded NÅE, and myself being joined on the album by Sweden’s IT (ABRUPTUM, VONDUR, OPTHALAMIA). The album will be called “Heksevind” and ELENYX herself will work on composition, lyrics, and vocals and play various instruments on the album, whilst I will provide vocals and additional lyrics and IT will participate both musically and with written material. The exact details of the collaboration will be known as the work progresses. “Heksevind” will be recorded both at my own HammerArt and Studios on the Danish island of Bornholm and at ELENYX’s own recording facilities in Oslo.
Aside from the positive, we also had some negatives in 2011. One of them being the release of my side-project SANSÂGER, which should by now have been out as a 7” EP. As is often the case with these things, there have been some problems in communication between the band and the label, and right now we don’t know exactly when it will be released, but I somehow doubt that will happen this year at this late stage, so you will probably only see this appear in 2012. When it is eventually released, it will be limited to 300 copies, and come with a limited edition shirt and patch. The EP, to be titled “Laesaabobbainjnj”, explores the thousand year old culture of the Danish island of Bornholm which came to an end at the death of Earl Blod Egil, and was subsequently replaced by Christianity. Artwork for the release and the vocal recordings were done at HammerArt & Studios.
That about wraps it up for 2011, so what lies ahead for BLODARV in 2012 aside from getting the SANSÂGER 7” EP out?
Well, first of all there is the retrospective compilation CD I touched on earlier. Around September time, when everything seemed to be happening, I was contacted by a label who wanted to release a BLODARV compilation CD. I gathered one hours worth of the best tracks from a ten-year period and made a complete cover layout with a 12 page booklet full of photos, drawings, and lyrics. Unfortunately when it was all ready to be shipped for pressing the “label” admitted it was only interested in releasing it on CDr, and not as a pro CD, which of course was totally out of the question. We have, since then, spoken to some of the labels we already knew, and knew we could trust, and right now we are working on the last details with a label for this release, and if everything goes to plan the compilation CD, which will carry the title ” A Demon’s Diary” will be released in the first half of 2012
2012 will also mean a lot of hard work for all of us rehearsing the new tracks and making sure they are 110 percent tight and ready to be added to the live setlist. At the same time that “A Demon’s Diary” is released, we are planning a smaller tour in Denmark together with another band. It’s all in the planning stage right now so I can’t say too much about it, but if all goes well we will be visiting various venues in Denmark in the spring. We hope to get a lot of gigs now that we are finally fit enough to hit the road after all the shit both myself and YNLEBORGAZ had to go through after our operations. We have some new stage-effect machines, and have been working hard to produce a more intense show. Obviously we are all very eager to get out and reclaim the stages, but only the venues, the fans and the bookers have a say in this matter.
Most important of course for 2012 is the next BLODARV album which will actually will be the first full-length since “Soulcollector…The thousand Years Tale” LP released by Northern Silence back in 2004. Between then and now, we have only released the mini albums, “Linaria Amlech” and “Civitas Diaboli”, but now the time is right and we are ready for the next full-length, and I promise it will have been worth the wait! As I mentioned earlier, much of it is already finished, and the final touches will be made during 2012. When exactly it will be released is harder to say, but I think I should be way off target if it wasn’t released at the end of 2012 on Self Mutilation Services. During the first month of 2012 we will do the photo-shoots and I will work on the layout for the cover and all that kind of thing. There is always quite a process involved in making an album the way we do, not only because our members have to travel by ship to visit each other, but also due to the fact that we want to do everything ourselves – from recording each track, to mixing, to doing the artwork and the photo-sessions, absolutely everything – and as at least some of you know, such things take time, especially if you take pride in what you create.
Okay, I am sure there are things that I forgot to mention as it’s been a hectic year, but that pretty much sums it up I think, and I would just like to give the biggest of all hails to all our connections, friends, fans, and followers, or whatever it’s all called these days. We’ve got the best ones! \m/ -Hugin 24 October 2011
Due to the fact that BLODARV’s session drummer YNLEBORGAZ is frequently busy these days with his own band ANGANTYR, we have been trying out an additional live drummer who goes by the name of FJORGYNN. He has been drumming with us for the last six rehearsals and has proved himself to be a superb live drummer who fits right in with BLODARV – being able to understand the flow and energy of our music and synch completely with the band.
This means that BLODARV is now in a position to be able to accept more live shows, without having to worry about the ones that YNLEBORGAZ can’t make. And who knows, you might even be able to see BLODARV and ANGANTYR appearing at the same festivals in the future.
The first show to feature FJORGYNN in action will be on the 26th November when BLODARV will be supporting ENDSTILLE at the Rock in Copenhagen (DK).
Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have contributed two tracks to the “Shadows of Tragedy” compilation CD which was released this week on Self Mutilation Services. Along with BLODARV, other contributors to the release are NOCTURNAL DEPRESSION, BLACK HATE, ACEDI and GRIMLAIR. “Shadows of Tragedy” is released in a 500 copies only limited edition CD, which hit the streets on the 16th September.
The two tracks contributed by BLODARV are both previously unreleased songs written at the same time as the band’s “Civitas Diaboli” album, which was itself released on Self Mutilation Services in 2009. The first track, “Sharpstone Mountain”, is effectively a prelude to the tale recounted in the “Blood Red Rocks” track from “Civitas Diaboli”, whilst the second track, “I Hulernes Rige” is a melancholy acoustic song, which gives BLODARV’s female backing vocalist Satinae Ma a chance to take the lead on vocals.
BLODARV founder and front man Hugin has only recently been allowed to return to performing, following an accident that resulted in extensive surgery to his jaw. It was also revealed this week that he would be collaborating with Norway’s Elenyx (NÅE , COMBATH) and Sweden’s It (ABRUPTUM, VONDUR, OPTHALAMIA) on a new album from NÅE, which is to be recorded partly in BLODARV’s own HammerArt and Studios on the Danish island of Bornholm, and partly in Elenyx’s own recording facilities in Oslo. Commented the front man: “Being out of action so long would have been frustrating if I hadn’t been able to work on writing for the next BLODARV release and record some of the music for it in the studio, as well as drafting out ideas for the NÅE collaboration. All in all, you could say that it’s been quite a productive time out”.
BLODARV is due to support ENDSTILLE at The Rock, in Copenhagen on the 26th November, and more information about the band can be found at at http://www.myspace.com/blodarv
