With six full-length albums under their belts, Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have decided that their next release will be an EP, echoing their very first release back in 1996, but demonstrating how very far the band has come since then. The four-track EP, titled “Evil Messiah”, will be released in both in Digipack CD and 12″ vinyl formats on My Kingdom music on the 23rd February. One of the tracks is a cover version of Alice Cooper’s “Sick Things”, the perfect choice for a band who excel at creating an evil, malignant, atmosphere. Artwork for the album is by Morten Hansen.
Track listing for “Evil Messiah” as follows:
1. Evil Messiah
3. Abandoned by God
4. Sick Things (Alice Cooper cover)
“Evil Messiah” will also be the first time that CREST OF DARKNESS’ new lineup records together, with former PALE FOREST drummer Bernhard joining the lineup of founder, frontman and bassist Ingar Amlien (ROQUEFIRE, CONCEPTION, AMLIEN’s INFERNO) and guitarist Rebo. Guesting on the “Evil Messiah” is Kristian Wentzel on keyboards. The EP was mixed and partly recorded at the MLP Studios and partly in Rebo’s own studio studio in Gjøvik .
CREST OF DARKNESS are set to play three Norwegian dates in February, the first being on the 13th at the Felix Pub and Scene in Lillehammer. On the 14th the band will play two shows at the Kultursenter in Gjøvik, where the early show, starting at 18:00, will be open to all ages, something that is quite rare in Norway, a country with strict age restrictions at its venues. This will then be followed by a show for audiences aged 18 and upwards at 21:00.
CREST OF DARKNESS will also make their first ever UK appearance at the Black Hart in Camden, London, on the 7th March, on a bill that includes ACHERONTAS, THAW, MORD’A’STIGMATA and TOWERS OF FLESH
A rehearsal video featuring snippets of the material from “Evil Messiah” was recently released on the band’s YouTube channel and can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/B4iwk0ubmIQ
It’s taken a decade or so for ROQUEFIRE to release their debut full-length album, but the moment has finally arrived and the Norwegian Hard Rock veterans will hit the streets running on the 31st October with the release of “Roll With Your Demons” . The ten-track album will appear on the band’s own Roquefire label and will be available both as a CD and a 12″ vinyl. However, unlike most releases, where the two formats have to be bought separately, “Roll With Your Demons” comes as a double package, with both CD and vinyl together. The album will also be available in digital format as well as on Spotify.
Track listing for “Roll With Your Demons” as follows:
1. Roll with your demons
2. I am the priest
3. Stonewall paintings
4. Satan moves in a dangerous slow way
5. Flying feather
6. The bloodied four leaf clover
9. Don’t call us
ROQUEFIRE was formed in 1977/78 by Ronni le Tekrø, a guitarist best known for his bands VAGABOND and of course the Grammy award winning TNT, as well as for his solo work and for his work with jazz musician Terje Rypdal. Le Tekrø has, over the years, earned many accolades, including a ranking in the Top Ten guitarists in the October 1989 issue of Guitar Player Magazine and was named as one of the 25 best guitarist in his genre in 2009. His influence as a heavy metal guitarist is acknowledged by various musicians, including former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde.
Today ROQUEFIRE continues play classic hard rock, the perfect showcase not only for le Tekrø’s expressive guitar style, but also for the skill and experience of the rest of its lineup, which includes Harald Grefsrud Ensrud on vocals , Ingar Amlien (CREST OF DARKNESS, CONCEPTION) on bass, Stein Glimsdal on drums and Torgeir Berg on keyboards. Playing a huge part in the rebirth of ROQUEFIRE and the release of the album, as well as writing lyrics for four of the tracks, is Thor-Rune Haugen, the band’s former manager who is considered by all to be an honorary fifth member.
Commenting the return of the band, Ingar Amlien had this to say: “Whilst myself and Tekrø have been continuously active on the music scene, Harald and Stein haven’t, and I was stunned by just how good these guys were even after all this time. Really, we started playing again just for fun 4 or 5 years ago, but despite it having been almost 30 years since we last played together, it was as if we had never taken a break at all, and, if anything, we were sounding better than ever. ROQUEFIRE definitely still had it, and here we are, with a brand new album to prove it”.
Having recently announced that they were preparing to release an EP ahead of their seventh full-length album, Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have announced a lineup change that not only sees the veteran band with a new drummer as Bernhard (PALE FOREST) joins the ranks alongside founder, bassist and frontman Ingar Amlien and guitarist Rebo, but also sees the band become a three-piece, something that Amlien explains he has thought about doing for some time now:
” I’ve put Crest of Darkness through some major changes over the past few years, but there is nothing dramatic behind this. As I’ve often experienced in my career, things just happen in a natural way when the time is right, without being forced to take any drastic decisions. Both myself and my band mates are developing all the time, and as a consequence it is often necessary to make changes in order to keep up with that development, and that is as it should be with any band. I don’t expect everybody will agree with me when it comes to this decision but from day one I’ve had a crystal clear vision about what CREST OF DARKNESS should be like. I’ve always followed my vision and I intend to continue doing so. I am very excited about how the new material is sounding and I don’t think anyone is going to be disappointed with what is to come.
“I would like to take the opportunity to say how grateful I am for everything that our former drummer and long time companion Kjetil brought into the band. I wish him all the best in the future and I still consider him as one of my best friends! I would also like to mention Jan Fredrik who came into the band with a lot of enthusiasm last year and played some great gigs with CREST OF DARKNESS. Memories I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life”.
It is this new lineup that is currently working on an EP to be released on My Kingdom Music at a date as yet to be announced, and which appears on a recently released rehearsal video that showcases snippets of the new material. The video can be seen below and on CREST OF DARKNESS’ YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/B4iwk0ubmIQ
Amlien recently hit the stage for the first time at a local festival with a band he calls AMLIEN’s INFERNO, which includes Arve Heimdal from Amlien’s former band CONCEPTION, and guitarist Simen Evenrud Bjørnsrud, in its lineup. He has also been finishing work on the upcoming album from ROQUEFIRE, as well as becoming involved in a new project, details of which will be announced in the not too distant future.
Veteran Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS are preparing to release an EP ahead of their seventh full-length album, and have released a video of the band rehearsing in preparation for entering the studio on the 17th August to begin recording the drums. The EP itself will be released on My Kingdom Music and is a follow up to the band’s 2013 album “In the Presence of Death” . The video features snippets of new material from the band and can be seen below and on the CREST OF DARKNESS YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/B4iwk0ubmIQ
Whilst things seem to have been relatively quiet for CREST OF DARKNESS recently, the band has, in fact, been busy behind the scenes writing new material and working on a new website, amongst other things. Founder and frontman Ingar Amlien has also been finishing work on the upcoming album from ROQUEFIRE, as well as becoming involved in a new project, details of which will be announced in the not too distant future. He also recently hit the stage for the first time at a local festival with a band he calls AMLIEN’s INFERNO, which includes Arve Heimdal from Amlien’s former band CONCEPTION, and guitarist Simen Evenrud Bjørnsrud in its lineup.
Commenting on what fans can expect from CREST OF DARKNESS in the future Amlien said: “We will of course be posting photos and videos of the recording of the EP, but we have some very important news about the band to announce very soon. Without revealing anything at all, let’s just say it might take a few people by surprise”.
Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have released a lyric video for the track “From the Dead” taken from their sixth full-length album “In the Presence of Death”, which was released last year on My Kingdom Music. CREST OF DARKNESS is the dark offspring of frontman and bassist Ingar Amlien, who formed the band in the mid-nineties at a time when the popularity of his then-band CONCEPTION was at its height. Amlien had always wanted to more fully explore his interest in Vampirism and Satanic ideology, and to do this he realised that he would have to move away from the Progressive side of Power Metal, and CREST of DARKNESS is the vehicle he chose. Using his passion for sonic brutality to create an intense form of Black Metal that makes use of Death and Epic Metal and even a hint of the Gothic, Amlien has, over the years, been able to develop a sound that is unmistakably CREST OF DARKNESS in its intensity.
Aside from preparing CREST OF DARKNESS to hit the stage again, Amlien is also working on new material for the band’s next album, and has hinted that there will be some significant news coming from the CREST OF DARKNESS CAMP very soon. He is also currently working on a new album with ROQUEFIRE, the Hard Rock band for which he plays bass.

SHINING is a band that needs no introduction, particularly to fans of Black Metal and DSBM, for whom NIKLAS KVARFORTH’s unruly child has been a yardstick for superb musicianship, skilled writing, and a complete disregard for the artificial rules placed on the genres by a generation of fans who only became aware of Black Metal long after the band was formed back in 1996. Never a band to stick to a repetitive formula when playing live, SHINING’s performances are emotionally charged and “of the moment”, with audiences always wondering what to expect next from one of the scene’s most dynamic frontmen. SHINING has a new full-length album, “8 ½ – Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd”, due out on Dark Essence Records on the 23rd September, which features guest vocals from some of the elite of Black Metal including ATTILA CSIHAR (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR), MANIAC (SKITLIV, EX MAYHEM), GAAHL (GOD SEED, WARDRUNA, TRELLDOM, EX GORGOROTH), FAMINE (PESTE NOIRE) and PEHR LARSSON (ALFAHANNE), a track from which can be heard at http://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/shining-selvdestruktivitetens . CREST of DARKNESS is another band with a long history behind it – 18 years to be precise. With six full-length albums under their belts, CREST OF DARKNESS this year saw Kickass Metal webzine place two of those albums in first and second positions in their “Norwegian Heavy Metal Albums of All Time” feature. Combining elements from both Black and Death Metal together with founder Ingar Amlien’s interest in Vampirism and Satanic ideology and his passion for sonic brutality, CREST OF DARKNESS’ sound has grown in power and intensity over the years and the recent addition of a young new guitarist has breathed a renewed sense of enthusiasm and a fresh outlook to the band. CREST OF DARKNESS’ sixth-full length album “In the Presence of Death” was released on My Kingdom Music earlier this year. Formed in 2007 in Stockholm, STERBHAUS is a four-piece thrash/death combo that set out to prove that quality Metal combined with a neatly weighed dose of humour can blend perfectly. Having completely revitalized itself STERBHAUS now brings to the stage humour with sarcastic tongue-in-cheek wit and verbal slaughter that is hell-bent on earning the band a smirk or two. STERBHAUS is all about waging sonic warfare against trends and stereotyping. What you see is what you get, and what you get is music founded on the four cornerstones of Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal. “Angels For Breakfast…And God For Lunch”, the debut album from STERBHAUS was released on Killhead Productions in 2012. Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS, whose sixth full-length album “In the Presence of Death” is scheduled for release on My Kingdom Music on the 25th February, have posted a new video of a track from the album on the band’s YouTube Channel. The video is produced and directed by MONITORmedia, using a special video mix of the track “Demon Child”. Photography is by Anders Børrensen and Levent Ultanur. Editing is by Øivind Kristiansen. The video of “Demon Child” can be seen below or at http://youtu.be/3-sNJCviSGY
“Demon Child” uses live footage of the band, which features the lineup of founder and frontman Ingar Amlien on vocals and bass, Rebo on lead guitars, Kjetil Hektoen (SJODOGG) on drums and Kjell Arne Hubred on rhythm guitars. Hubred left the band due to family and other commitments shortly after “In the Presence of Death” was finished and has since been replaced by DJEVELKULT guitarist Jan Fredrik Solheim.
Formed in the mid-nineties by Amlien at a time when his then-band CONCEPTION was at the peak of its popularity, CREST OF DARKNESS allowed Amlien to move away from the Progressive side of Power Metal and more fully explore his interest in Vampirism and Satanic ideology. Since then he has harnessed his passion for sonic brutality to create Black Metal that has grown in power and intensity over the eighteen years of the band’s existence. With an occasional nod in the direction of both Death and Epic Metal , and even a hint of Gothic, the sound is unmistakably CREST OF DARKNESS.
