Just over a month after the former members of the now-defunct DRAUGR announced that they had formed SELVANS, a musical project born to recreate, through music, lyrics and aesthetics,  the mysticism and the folklore of the different ethnic groups that have dwelt in Italy throughout the ages, they are now able to announce  that the band has inked a deal with Avantgarde Music for the release of SELVANS’  debut  EP.  Titled  “Clangores Plenilunio”, the EP  is set to hit the streets in February 2015.

The lineup on “Clangores Plenilunio” includes Selvans Haruspex (Ursus Arctos of DRAUGR)  on vocals,  keyboards and traditional instruments , Sethlans Fulguriator (Mors of DRAUGR) on guitar, and DRAUGR co-founders Stolas on bass and  the late Jonny Morelli on drums.  Morelli was able to record all the drums and most of the vocals before he was tragically killed in a motor bike accident in June of last year, and the EP, which marks Morelli’s last ever appearance, is  being released in his honour,  just as the band embarks on the new path that he was so excited about and so very much looking forward to travelling together with them.

Commenting on the title and the decision to sign with Avantgarde,  Selvans Haruspex had this to say: “The Italian translation of the Latin expression  “Clangores Plenilunio”, hides a meaning linked to the memory of Jonny  which is very important to all of us, to what was, and what will be.   As fans of many of the label’s releases, we can say that we wore out quite a few of them through repeated listenings, and therefore the fact that Avantgarde’s Roberto Mammarella was interested in working with SELVANS  was a great honour for us.  The spirit of Avantgarde is a perfect match for both our music and the concepts we are expressing through it, and knowing that Jonny would have been proud of such a collaboration is by far the greatest satisfaction for us”.

SELVANS recently debuted a digital single edit of “Lupercale”,  a track that will appear on the EP in its full version  which runs to over  9 minutes in length.   “Lupercale”, is available direct from the band at https://selvans.bandcamp.com/track/lupercale-single-edit and can be heard on the band’s SoundCloud page at https://soundcloud.com/templeofselvans/lupercale-edit  or on YouTube at http://youtu.be/D8Zghhn-RIw

Having connected with the band during 2014’s Roadburn Festival, Dark Essence Records were quick to snap up the Icelandic Progressive Doomsters MOMENTUM, and on the 9th February 2015 the label is set to release MOMENTUM’s sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive”.  As a taster of what to expect Dark Essence Records have debuted “Gauntlet” , a track from the album and it can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/momentum-gauntlet

“The Freak is Alive”, which was Recorded at Studio ReFlex with Axel “Flex” Árnason, with a lineup  that includes Holaf on Vocals, Bass and Sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on Guitar and Vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on Drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on Guitar and Vocals, features nine tracks that blend atmospheric Post-Rock, reminiscent of Isis and Cult of Luna, with a Neurosis-esque level of bone-crushing heaviness interspersed with soft vocals and relaxed clean passages.  The album is very much the concept of frontman Holaf, whose lyrics and artwork combine with the music to carry the listeners on a surreal journey through the subconscious mind, guiding them, but at the same time allowing them the freedom to interpret what they find at their journey’s end.

Track listing for “The Freak is Alive” as follows:

1. Bury the Eyes Once Gold
2. Between Two Worlds
3. Familiar Unknown
4. Gauntlet
5. The Freak is Alive
6. A Beast is Near

Carnal Records is set to release “Nightmarish Sleep”, a four-track MCD from cult Swedish Black Metallers SVARTSYN  on the 19th December,  and has today debuted the title track which can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/carnalrecords/svartsyn-nightmarish-sleep

“Nightmarish Sleep”, which was mastered by the Clintworks Studio in Hamburg, Germany, and includes artwork by the illustrator Chadwick St John of Inkshadows, will be available in both CD and digital formats.  Track listing for “Nightmarish Sleep” as follows:

1, Split Tongue Dialogue
2. Cursed be the Rivers
3. Outside the Flesh
4. Nightmarish Sleep

Formed in 1991 by Ornias the band was originally named CHALICE, changing its name to SVARTSYN in 1993.  With Draugen (ex-DARK FUNERAL) joining the lineup in 1996, SVARTSYN signed to Folter Records, for the release their debut full-length album “The True Legend”, the first of a total of eight full-length albums, the latest being 2013’s “Black Testament” on Agonia Records.  SVARTSYN quickly became a cult band on the Swedish Black Metal scene, playing traditional dark, grim Black Metal in a style that is fast,  brutal, sinister and  misanthropic.

Ornias does not mince his words when it comes to talking about his music in general and “Nightmarish Sleep” in particular, of which he says: “If you like your production to sound nice and clean you’d better stay the fuck away.  This is very dark, dirty and violent.  This is the result, at least in part, of a search for answers as to why I’m still here.  There is a reason why I still exist. …a nightmarish deep that takes you beyond the Black testament. These are the offerings and the hymns to the Dark Gods. This IS the nightmarish sleep”.

“I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”, a new video from SUCHTHAUS, the band  formed by sculptor Spacebrain,  and for whom imagery is an integral aspect of their music, has just been released.   Featured in  the video are Spacebrain’s daughter and her boyfriend, along with Petter Pogo, the bass player with one of Norway’s most popular pop bands JOKKE AND VALENTINERNE, as well as SUCHTHAUS members  Fruen and  Ingvar, and Spacebrain himself .  Filmed entirely in the hallway of Spacebrain’s home in Oslo, the video gives a claustrophobic and disturbing view of religion.  “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/Ipzm-R71a9E

Work is nearing completion on SUCHTHAUS’ sophomore album “Motorbrain”, which, according to the band, is a pure metal album, but one that focuses on different nuances within the genre.   Drums on the album are by MAYHEM’s Hellhammer, who originally contributed as a session drummer, but has now joined Spacebrain (vocals and bass),  co-founder Fruen (vocals and guitars) Ingvar (guitars) and AD/HD (bass) as a full-time member of the band.   Currently undergoing mastering, “Motorbrain”, which includes a guest appearance by SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth,  will be released on SUCHTHAUS’ own label Rollabigone on a date as yet to be announced. .

German born Spacebrain, who has lived in Norway for many years, is known not only for his sculptures, but also  for his iconic stage sets for bands such as MAYHEM, recently decided to move his workshop to France so that he could once again work on his sculpting.  “It is prohibitively expensive to buy or rent a space large enough in Norway to house a workshop, especially for the size of some of the sculptures I produce, so we found a farm off the beaten track in Brittany, where I can once again find the peace and energy I need for my art. We will still be living in Norway, so SUCHTHAUS will not be affected, but we will be travelling to Brittany regularly, and spending most of the summers there.  The place needs a fair amount of work on it, but it’s just the kind of place I need to kick start my sculpting again”.  Examples of Spacebrain’s art can be seen on his website at  http://www.spacebrain.no/index.html

SUCHTHAUS’ music is not easily categorised, in fact, it’s impossible to pigeon hole it, which is exactly  how the band wants it, because it gives them free rein to create whatever kind of music they want, without being hobbled by preconceptions and genre restrictions.  The band’s debut album “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, which included collaborations from musicians such Maniac  (SKITLIV, ex-MAYHEM),   CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Fredrik A. Juell  (BURNING RUBBER,  BERSERK BASTARDS) and singer Sibob Jawara was a clear illustration of how eclectic the band really is.  As far as “Motorbrain’s” “metal” orientation goes, it’s not likely to be a direction that the band has any intention of following in the future.  As Spacebrain says ” I feel this is our contribution to metal, the next album has to be different, as this darkness  is twisting my mind.  Maybe a hippie project would be more kind to my soul?”

With a release date set for the 5th of December, Sweden’s Carnal Records have today revealed details of the upcoming album from Scandinavian Occult Black Metallers GRAFVITNIR.  The seven track album, entitled “Semen Serpentis”,  will be the band’s sophomore full-length release and a follow up to 2012’s “NâHásh“.  GRAFVITNIR themselves have chosen the 22nd November to debut the track “Where Time Has Ceased To Be” from “Semen Serpentis”,  because that is when the Moon is black in Scorpio.   “Where Time Has Ceased To Be” can be heard above and at https://soundcloud.com/carnalrecords/where-time-has-ceased-to-be

“Semen Serpentis” deals with the subject of the Serpentine bloodline, and  artwork and photography  for the album are by Occultum.  Track listing as follows:

1. Where Time has Ceased to Be
2. Descendants of the Serpent
3. Av Ormens Blod
4. Sword of the Damned
5. Poisonous Streams of Hraunn
6. Seed of Apep
7. Vilddjurets Återkomst

GRAFVITNIR was formed in the dark forests of Sweden in 2007 to perform Scandinavian Occult Black Metal and act as a herald for the Chaosophical Tradition of dark, forbidden fruits.  With a lineup that describes itself as The Faceless Emanations Of Primordial Chaos  and comprises Niantiel, Tishin and Modrius, it is not surprising that its members are all practitioners, adepts and occultists of the Luciferian Tradition.  Drawing its inspiration from  Occultism, GRAFVITNIR ‘s lyrics explore the subjects of Numerology, Astrology, Witchcraft, Transcendence and Luciferianism.

A year ago almost to the day, Pagan Black Metallers DRAUGR called it a day after an illustrious ten-year career that saw the band, whose music paid tribute to their Pagan ancestors,  firmly at the top of the genre in Italy, and with a solid and ever-growing following world-wide.   It is fitting, therefore, that some of DRAUGR’s original members have chosen this time to announce the launch of their new band – SELVANS.  But it is a bitter-sweet moment because, in a lineup that includes Selvans Haruspex (Ursus Arctos of DRAUGR)  on vocals,  keyboards and traditional instruments , Sethlans Fulguriator (Mors of DRAUGR) on guitars,  and DRAUGR co-founder Stolas on bass, one very important member is missing – drummer and DRAUGR co-founder Jonny Morelli, who was tragically killed in a motor bike accident in June of last year.

With a new website and Facebook page launched yesterday, SELVANS have today debuted a digital single edit of a track that is originally over 9 minutes in length and which will appear in its entirety on the EP that the band hopes to release in 2015.  This EP marks the last ever appearance of Morelli, who recorded all of the drum tracks and most of the vocals before his death, and in whose honour the EP is being released.  The track, “Lupercale”, is available direct from the band at https://selvans.bandcamp.com/track/lupercale-single-edit and can be heard above and on the band’s SoundCloud page at https://soundcloud.com/templeofselvans/lupercale-edit  or on YouTube at http://youtu.be/D8Zghhn-RIw

Selvans Haruspex made the following statement yesterday where he talked about the new band and the impact of Morelli’s death: ” Exactly one year ago today, together with the band, I announced that DRAUGR had split after ten years of activity.   Barely a few months after that, on the same day of the month, we tragically lost Jonny, who has always been not just a good friend, but also a real example to us all.

During the months before that cursed day Jonny,  Sethlans F.,  Stolas and myself had been working together to bring about something that had been on my mind for two years: SELVANS, a musical project born to recreate the mysticism and the folklore of the different ethnic groups that have dwelt in Italy throughout the ages –  a concept to be expressed  through music, lyrics and aesthetics. And  Jonny was to have been the drummer, lead singer and lyricist.

At the time of Jonny’s death in June, we were about to enter the studio and record our first EP.  Jonny had already written and pre-recorded the drum parts and 90% of the vocals. Never in a million years did we imagine that  that we would have to face such a painful situation.

In August, barely two months after that tragic event, we gathered enough courage to listen to Jonny’s work again and to talk about what to do with SELVANS. Like the rest of us, Jonny had always been enthusiastic about the project, and he was doing some great work before being so suddenly and unfairly taken from us.

To put aside his work and give up would have been an insult to his dedication, so we decided to enter the studio and finish the EP in his memory, which we did with the aid of a few experts, who knew and appreciated Jonny, friends and family.

We decided that I would be the one to write and record the missing vocals. Even if I had never played this role before, the task fell to me because I have always been strongly involved in lyrical decisions and it was essential for SELVANS.

Today the time has come to let everyone who knew and appreciated Jonny  listen to his final artistic contribution. Each element of this work has a special meaning to it, starting with the title, which will be revealed very soon together with other details.  The EP will be out in 2015 and its songs will never be recorded again because this is going to be “Jonny’s EP” –  a milestone to mark his passing and to remember him by,  and with it, set off on this new path in his honour”.

An Italian version of the statement can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/notes/selvans/the-11th-of-the-month-ita-eng/545686575565446

It’s taken a decade  or so for ROQUEFIRE to release their debut full-length album,  but the moment has finally arrived and the Norwegian Hard Rock veterans will hit the streets running on the 31st October with the release of  “Roll With Your Demons” .  The ten-track album will appear on the band’s own Roquefire label and will be available both as a CD and a 12″ vinyl.  However,  unlike most releases, where the two formats have to be bought separately, “Roll With Your Demons” comes as a double package, with both CD and vinyl together.  The album will also be available in digital format as well as on Spotify.

Track listing for “Roll With Your Demons” as follows:
1. Roll with your demons
2. I am the priest
3. Stonewall paintings
4. Satan moves in a dangerous slow way
5. Flying feather
6. The bloodied four leaf clover
7. Porn
8. Glorified
9. Don’t call us
10. Lightbringer

ROQUEFIRE was formed in 1977/78 by Ronni le Tekrø, a guitarist best known for his bands VAGABOND and of course the Grammy award winning TNT, as well as for his solo work and for his work with jazz musician Terje Rypdal.   Le Tekrø has, over the years, earned many accolades, including a ranking in the Top Ten guitarists in the October 1989 issue of Guitar Player Magazine and was named as one of the 25 best guitarist in his genre in 2009.  His influence as a heavy metal guitarist is acknowledged by various musicians, including former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde.

Today ROQUEFIRE continues play classic hard rock, the perfect showcase not only for  le Tekrø’s expressive guitar style, but also for the skill and experience of the rest of its lineup,  which includes Harald Grefsrud Ensrud  on vocals , Ingar Amlien (CREST OF DARKNESS, CONCEPTION) on bass, Stein Glimsdal  on drums and Torgeir Berg on keyboards.   Playing a huge part in the rebirth of ROQUEFIRE and the release of the album, as well as writing lyrics for four of the tracks, is Thor-Rune Haugen,  the band’s former manager who is considered by all to be an honorary fifth member.

Commenting the return of the band, Ingar Amlien had this to say:  “Whilst myself and Tekrø have been continuously active on the music scene, Harald and Stein haven’t,  and I was stunned by just how good these guys were even after all this time.  Really, we started playing again just for fun 4 or 5 years ago, but despite it having been almost 30 years since we last played together, it was as if we had never taken a break at all, and, if anything, we were sounding better than ever.  ROQUEFIRE definitely still had it, and here we are, with a brand new album to prove it”.

More information about ROQUEFIRE can be found on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roquefire/219762958057413
