ICELAND’S MOMENTUM REVEAL VIDEO FOR TRACK FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

With two succesful releases to their name, Iceland’s MOMENTUM are hard at  at work on their next full-length album, which will once again appear on Dark Essence Records, at a date as yet to be specified.   Whilst work is continuing apace, the band have been able to reveal  “Dire Host”, a new track from the album, via a video which was filmed in the studio.  The video can be seen below and on MOMENTUM’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/OviPlf3xiLs

“Dire Host” was recorded in June in Hveragerði, a small town about a half hour drive from Reykjavík,  and the new album marks the first time that MOMENTUM will be working in the studio with Friðrik Helgason.  As to what fans should expect from the album, “Dire Host” gives a pretty good idea according to the band who had this to say: “The songwriting process for a new album is going very well and we are really enjoying the direction in which we are heading.  It has been, and continues to be, a new learning curve for the band to keep the music to just the three of us,  but it would seem that we thrive on challenging ourselves with something different every time.

“We wanted to go and record a proper example of what the band is doing today and we feel that ‘Dire Host’ captures that quite well. If you happen to be at Eistnaflug festival next week you will be able to see this live as well as a lot more of the new material, including a special treat that we’ve been working very hard on this past month”.

MOMENTUM, whose lineup comprises Kristján on Drums,  Holaf on  Vocals and Bass , and Ingvar on Guitar and Vocals, is set appear not once, but twice at the Eistnaflug Festival in Iceland in July.  Their first appearance will be on the Boli stage on Wednesday 6th at 17:50, whilst on Friday the 8th they hit the Brennivin stage at 22:20 for what will be a special show.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS DEBUTS TRACK FROM UPCOMING MOMENTUM RELEASE

2015 proved to be an extremely successful year in terms of critically acclaimed releases for  Dark Essence Records, and the Norwegian label has decided to  kick  off 2016 with a tasty re-release, in digital format, of the debut full-length album from Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM.    “Fixation, at Rest” is set for release on the 15th January,  and the track ” Prosthetic Sea ” from the album can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/momentum-prosthetic-sea

 

WIth the band’s sophomore full-length album “The Freak Is Alive” finding its way into a plethora of “Best of 2015” lists, it’s not such a surprising idea to let fans experience an album they may have missed the first time around.    Originally released in 2010, with the band’s then-lineup of Hörður Ólafsson on  Vocals & Bass, Ingvar Sæmundsson on Guitar & Backing Vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on Drums and Erling Orri Baldursson on Guitar.  The ten-track album was recorded at Island Studios by Axel Árnason and Studio Njallinn by Momentum in 2009 and mixed and mastered by Axel Árnason at Studio ReFlex in 2010

With “Fixation, at Rest”, MOMENTUM  had very much left behind them their Black/Death Metal roots and developed a sound and an identity that is distinctly their own,  and which uses not just music and lyrics, but also frontman Hörður Ólafsson’s idiosyncratic artwork as an integral part of the band’s overall concept .

Now a trio, MOMENTUM’s lineup comprises Kristján on Drums,  Holaf on  Vocalsand Bass , and Ingvar on Guitar and Vocals.   It is a band whose sound is best described as the merging of atmospheric post-rock, reminiscent of ISIS and CULT OF LUNA, together with a level of bone-crushing heaviness broken up by soft singing and relaxed clean passages, intense vocals layered over discordant, staccato bursts, and mingling with eerie sound textures that explode into high-impact power chords, which bring to mind the work of NEUROSIS.

Dark Essence Records will follow up their release of MOMENTUM’s sophomore full-length album “The Freak Is Alive”, with a trip into the band’s past and the digital release of their debut album “Fixation, at Rest” on the 15th January.

TAAKE TO HEADLINE THE DARK ESSENCE RECORDS LABEL NIGHT AT INFERNO FESTIVAL IN A LINEUP THAT INCLUDES GALAR, KRAKOW AND MOMENTUM

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS will once again be showcasing some of its bands at Inferno Festival this year, with a lineup that includes TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM –  all bands who have recently released new albums on what is one of Norway’s most respected and growing labels.  The event will take place on Wednesday the 1st of April at Blå in Oslo, Norway.

For fans of  Norwegian Black Metal TAAKE needs no introduction.  After more than two decades of writing and performing his Helnorsk Svartmetall, frontman and founder Hoest still produces music which, whilst staying true to its roots,  manages to remain fresh, original and relevant in a genre that  is sadly lacking in all three attributes these days.    The band released its sixth full-length album  “Stridens hus” in December of last year, and proved once again that Hoest has lost none of his intensity and unpredictability, either in the studio or on the stage.

With their third full-length album “De gjenlevende” barely over a week old, GALAR is a Black-Folk Metal  band that is not scared to use non-traditional metal instruments including both a string quintet and a horn quartet.  These unusual elements are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album and to the band’s music in general. GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  Inferno Festival will be the first time fans will get a chance to see the new lineup on stage.

Formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005, and their third full-length album “amaran” released in February of this year, KRAKOW’s lineup of highly skilled and experienced musicians consists of Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR) on vocals and bass,  and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR) on drums.   The Experimental Post Rockers will be back on the Blå stage with their dark, melodic and mysterious music, perfectly performed with the band’s usual intensity and dynamism.

Making their DARK ESSENCE RECORDS debut at Inferno this year will be one of the label’s more recent signings, Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM, whose sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive” was also released in February.  MOMENTUM’s blend of atmospheric Post-Rock is reminiscent of Isis and Cult of Luna, with a Neurosis-esque level of bone-crushing heaviness interspersed with soft vocals and relaxed clean passages.  The band’s lineup consists of frontman Holaf, the man responsible for both MOMENTUM’s  lyrics and artwork, on vocals, bass and sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on guitar and vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on guitar and vocals.

Iceland’s MOMENTUM, whose sophomore full-length album “The Freak is Alive” hit the streets on the 9th February on Dark Essence Records, have released a video for a track from the album.  Made by the band’s frontman Holaf, who is responsible for MOMENTUM’s lyrical, musical and artistic concepts, the video for “Between Two Worlds is an animated adaptation of the song’s artwork and can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/sE5c4OQR1zY

 

Holaf explained that as a visual artist, as well as a musician, he very much prefers graphics to come alive whenever he has that option, so the video “Between Two Worlds” is a simple animated adaptation of the artwork for that particular track. In fact, each of the songs on the nine-track album take the listener on a journey,  and the artwork illustrates the different stages of that journey.  The track “Between Two Worlds” leads you to a portal that marks the border between the surface reality and the underlying world.  At the portal the traveller meets the Gatekeeper, Mr Blue, who, together with his band of freaks, surveys everything that happens on both sides.

MOMENTUM have recently been showcasing the artwork of each of the tracks from “The Freak is Alive” on the band’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/momentumiceland, where each drawing is accompanied by a brief explanation and lyrics.

“The Freak is Alive” is an album in which the lineup of Holaf on Vocals, Bass and Sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on Guitar and Vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on Drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on Guitar and Vocals, combines atmospheric post-rock with bone-crushing heaviness,  and features soft vocals and clean passages. Having connected with the band during 2014’s Roadburn Festival, Dark Essence Records were quick to snap up the Icelandic Progressive Doomsters MOMENTUM, and on the 9th February 2015 the label is set to release MOMENTUM’s sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive”.  As a taster of what to expect Dark Essence Records have debuted “Gauntlet” , a track from the album and it can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/momentum-gauntlet

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS, one of the fastest growing Norwegian labels, both in reputation and size, will host a listening session at Bergen’s Beyond the Gates Festival where attendees will have the opportunity to be the first people to hear tracks from the upcoming albums from TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW, and the label’s new signing MOMENTUM.  The session will take place at the Garage, Bergen, on Saturday 30th August from 14:00 – 16:00.

Additionally, KRAKOW  will hit the stage at the Garage at 18:00 on Friday 29th to perform a set.

Commenting on the event, DARK ESSENCE’s Martin Kvam said: “Beyond the Gates is the ideal  setting for us to showcase what fans can expect from these great bands over the coming months.  Most people are already aware that we have new albums from GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM in our release schedule,  but we haven’t announced anything at all about the new TAAKE, so knowing that this one is coming up should be a welcome surprise for their fans.  We’re all very much looking forward to hearing everyone’s reaction to what they are going to be listening to on Saturday”.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS INKS DEAL WITH ICELAND’S MOMENTUM

Dark Essence Records have inked a deal with Iceland’s MOMENTUM and are preparing to release the band’s sophomore full-length album, “The Freak Is Alive”, on a date as yet to be announced. Formed in 2003, MOMENTUM started life as a Black/Death metal project, with their first release, “The Requiem” EP appearing in 2006, followed two years later by another EP – “Your Side of the Triangle”.

By the time MOMENTUM’s debut full-lenth album “Fixation, at Rest” appeared in 2010, the band had left its roots behind and developed an identity all of its own, which, with the upcoming “The Freak Is Alive” album,  frontman Holaf has taken even further, using his artwork, lyrics and concept to carry listeners on a surreal journey through the subconscious mind, leading them along paths that allow them to interpret for themselves what they are seeing and hearing.

With a lineup that includes Holaf on Vocals, Bass and Sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on Guitar and  Vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on Drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on Guitar and Vocals, MOMENTUM is a band that excels at merging atmospheric post-rock, reminiscent of ISIS and CULT OF LUNA, together with a level of bone-crushing heaviness broken up by soft singing and relaxed clean passages, intense vocals layered over discordant, staccato bursts, and mingling with eerie sound textures that explode into high-impact power chords, which bring to mind the work of NEUROSIS.
