Is it Jazz? Records have inked a deal with Norway’s SOLSTEIN, the latest project from multi-instrumentalist Jacob Holm-Lupo.  Inspired by jazz-rock, funk, prog rock and chill-out, SOLSTEIN, offers up an instrumental form of rock, where jazz harmony combines with proggy arrangements and soul/funk grooves.  The end result is a laid back, elegant, sound that oscillates between funky fusion and rock.

SOLSTEIN’s four- piece lineup have a  history that could be classed as illustrious.

On keyboards for SOLSTEIN is Brynjar Dambo, known for his work with WHITE WILLOW, PINE LAKE, DONNER, HAAKON ELLINGSEN

A published author of books on various artists including TOTO and BLUE ÖYSTER CULT,  Jacob Holm-Lupo himself, who will handle bass guitar, guitar and  keyboards, is known for his other projects WHITE WILLOW, THE OPIUM CARTEL and DONNER. He is also a much respected producer and audio engineer, working out of his Dude Ranch Studio, whose name is very well known to  fans of many of the bands on Is it Jazz? Records’ sister-label Karisma Records, with whom he has had a long collaboration.

Guitarist Stian Larsen was educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he specialised in Jazz. He has recorded with, amongst others, SMITH KOMMA JOHN, KÖÖK and PET ZOO, and played live with the likes of LÖV, DANIEL KVAMMEN and  BENDIK BAKSAAS, to name but a few.

Drummer Keith Carlock is a drum instructor who is a Grammy-winning recording artist and a Member of the Mississippi Musicians’ Hall of Fame.  STEELY DAN, DONALD FAGEN, WALTER BECKER, TOTO, JOHN MAYER and STING are amongst the myriad artists with whom he has recorded or played live.

The initial idea behind SOLSTEIN, which translated means “Sunstone,  was born from Jacob and Keith Carlock’s  2021 collaboration on “Hesitant Light”,  the debut album from DONNER, on which Keith’s playing pushed some of the material in a jazzier, funkier, direction that Jacob felt merited further exploration.

The band itself is named after a relatively rare rock whose main deposit is found along the coast in Southern Norway where Jacob lives on a small island. The Sunstone has copper-red crystals that refract light in a beautiful way when seen from different angles.

About their upcoming collaboration with Is it Jazz? Records, the band  had this to say:

SOLSTEIN are proud and pleased to sign with Is It Jazz? Records. We are looking forward to joining their artist roster and we feel their name reflects questions we often ask ourselves!

About their debut album, which will be titled “The Skerry” and which will be comprised of eight instrumental tracks, SOLSTEIN explained:

The making of our debut album has been a fun, light-hearted affair where zero fucks were given as to what the jazz police may have to say. Cheeky, 80’s-tinged fusion-soloing, pastel synths and a very open-minded interpretation of a Wayne Shorter classic are all par for the course. In fact there has only been one rule: No long solos. Keep it rock-length, not jazz-length.

More details about “The Skerry” will be revealed at a later date.

In the meantime, more  information about SOLSTEIN can be found on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/solsteinband

Dark Essence Records have welcomed Norwegian Black Metallers TILINTETGJORT to their roster, and will release the band’s debut full-length album later this year.

TILINTETGJORT, which translated means “Destroyed”, was formed in the early summer of 2020 by three Oslo-based musicians:  Den Gamle and Hazzlegard on guitars, and Sturt: on bass.  By the end of the summer the trio was joined by Tybalt on drums  and Svik on vocals, cementing their place in the now five-piece  lineup.

The newly formed  TILINTETGJORT set out to create Avantgarde Black Metal  that finds its inspiration not only in the ’90’s Black Metal, in which the band is strongly rooted, but also in ’70’s Prog Rock along, with a variety of other experimental genres.

2021 saw TILINTETGJORT dedicate themselves to the creative process, with the band releasing the digital single ” Vinter og Høst” in September of that year, and as well as making their live debut alongside VED BUENS ENDE and MORTEM in Oslo.

By the time 2022 came along, TILINTETGJORT was ready to begin recording the band’s debut album, entering the Chaka Khan Studio in January.  The resulting material was enough to pique the interest of Dark Essence Records, who signed the band a month later.

“TILINTETGJORT is extremely happy to have signed with Dark Essence Records” commented the band, and are “looking forward to a long and productive partnership. Busy times ahead!”

More details about TILINTETGJORT’s debut album will be released at a later date, and in the meantime, more information about the band can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tilintetgjortnor

White Willow 2011

Karisma Records have inked a deal with WHITE WILLOW founder Jacob Holm-Lupo for the release of six out of the seven studio albums from the Norwegian Prog legends whose long history started around 1992 when  guitarist Jacob Holm-Lupo, who at that time was a member of the POLICE/BRUCE HORNSBY-inspired pop band THE ORCHID GARDEN, and keyboard player Jan Tariq Rahman from a local jazz-rock/prog rock band DUGGVÅTE DVERGER, got together to assess if they had any songwriting chemistry.  The result was the song “Snowfall”, written whilst sitting on the floor playing acoustic guitar and clavinet, and the rest, as they say, is history.

White Willow 1994

WHITE WILLOW’s debut full-length “Ignis Fatuus” was released in 1995 to glowing revues and became a runaway hit on the burgeoning prog revival scene.  Just how much of a hit it was came as a complete surprise to the band, who, unaware of the album’s success,  showed up later that year at the Los Angeles’ Progfest ’95 for their second ever live performance, only to find themselves in front of an audience that numbered in the thousands who had come specifically to see them.

From thereon, the band formed part of the spearhead of what was to subsequently become known as the Third Wave of progressive rock, along with other Scandinavian bands like ÄNGLAGÅRD (whose drummer would later join WHITE WILLOW), LANDBERK and ANEKDOTEN.  The band went on to earn the accolade as “one of the most significant progressive groups of the current era” in Billboard’s “Guide to Progressive Music”.

White Willow 2004

The history of WHITE WILLOW’s lineup is somewhat complicated by the comings and goings of its various members over the years, so suffice it to say that only Holm-Lupo has been with the band since its inception, whilst WOBBLERS Lars Fredrik Frøislie has been a mainstay since 2001.

Whilst inevitably changing over time, WHITE WILLOW’s sound  is frequently centered around female vocals  and an expanded instrumentation that usually includes a host of analogue synthesizers, mellotron, woodwinds and strings, in addition, of course to traditional rock instrumentation.

White Willow 2006

Citing influences that range from the likes of prog stalwarts GENESIS and KING CRIMSON to pop legends ABBA, WHITE WILLOW has, in turn, been quoted as an inspiration by bands ranging from doom Metallers CATHEDRAl and Norway’s ENSLAVED to German neo-proggers FREQUENCY DRIFT whose name is actually taken from a White Willow lyric.

White Willow 2017

WHITE WILLOW has now become a studio project exclusively, helmed by Holm-Lupo and often featuring guest appearances from prominent musicians such as  Norway’s guitar hero Hedvig Mollestad, or internationally renowned klezmer clarinetist David Krakauer. The band’s latest album to date is 2017’s “Future Hopes” (which is not scheduled for re-release), and which featured a specially commissioned album cover by Roger Dean.

The prospect of seeing WHITE WILLOW’s past hard work being once again brought to the attention of its old fans, and the idea that new fans will be able to discover for themselves the significant contribution the band has made to the Prog scene over the years is something that Holm-Lupo is relishing:

White Willow are extremely proud to be working with the talented people at Karisma, and looking forward to bring these albums out to the fans.

One of the challenges we’ve had with White Willow is that a lot of material has been lost in the mists of time. Our recording sessions in the early days were not particularly organized, and we worked in various studios over extended, and often interrupted, periods of time.

Hence the previous attempts at remastering have used secondary and tertiary source material, to varying results. This time we have done the deep forensic work and have recovered original, pristine master tapes for most of the material. It’s been time-consuming, but it will definitely be worth it.

Well versed in the difficulties, and joys, that can come when bringing back to life back catalogues and long-unavailable releases from  legendary Prog names, Karisma Records were more than up for the challenge. Having worked extensively with Holm-Lupo in his capacity as mastering engineer the label  knows what he is capable of, and had this to say :

Jacob Holm-Lupo, who is these days a renowned mastering engineer with his Dude Ranch Studio, is doing the restoring and remastering with audiophile, analog equipment to ensure the most faithful and detailed restoration possible. We are also aiming to restore the original artwork of the albums wherever possible.

No date has yet been set for the release of the WHITE WILLOW back catalogue, but Karisma Records have confirmed that the following six albums will be included:

Ignis Fatuus – 1995

Ex Tenebris – 1998

Sacrament – 2000

Storm Season – 2004

Signal to Noise – 2006

Terminal Twilight – 2011

“In the Hollow of a Wave”, the third full-length album from MONSTEREO promises to be the heaviest work that the Norwegian rockers, known for their energy-filled rock songs, have released to date.

Having had over a decade in which to refine their sound,  the band’s latest release is richer, and broader, than its two predecessors, with its judicious use of more keyboards, synths, and a variety of guitars, producing a  sound that is full of heavy riffs interspersed with exploratory instrumental sections.

Karisma Records have previously assuaged our curiosity with a taste of what expect from “In the Hollow of a Wave” with two singles and videos, and today they  have released a third single from the album.  Titled “Witness”, the track can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at https://orcd.co/monstereo-witness

It is a single about which MONSTEREO had this to say:

“Witness” is an attempt, both musically and lyrically, to depict the various frustrations and hardships many have recently suffered. The tune is based on one of the most aggressive riffs on the album, complemented by verses and a chorus that serve to paint the picture of despair and disdain. The songs core is a classic instrumental Monstereo-build up, where airy subtleness and instrumentation evolve into a climax.

Describing their new opus as being filled with “teeth-grinding riffs, big choruses and rock-solid grooves”, MONSTEREO’s lineup of Ola Utaaker Segadal on lead vocals and electric guitars, Øyvind Aase Fluge on electric guitars, Jørgen Stangeland Bach on Bass guitar, and Jon Bolstad on Drums, are masters at producing catchy melodies that contain a few surprises along the  way.

Set for release on the 17th September in CD, Vinyl and Digital formats, “In the Hollow of a Wave” is now available to pre-ordered from:

With the release the  of the single  “Meldrøye”, taken from VESTINDIEN’s debut full-length album “Null” , Dark Essence Records have revealed another tantalising glimpse into what fans can expect to hear from a band whose initial brief foray into the music scene generated a considerable amount of interest thanks to their frenetic live shows, and enthusiastically received 2011 EP “We are the Lords of Hellfire”.

“Meldrøye”, about which VESTINDIEN say “Exploring and expanding one’s mind is crucial to help us understand that we are not placed above nature. We are nature”, can be streamed or downloaded from various services at https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/Vestindien_Meldroye

Despite having garnered a substantial following for themselves, VESTINDIEN called it a day seven years ago, and, for reasons known only to themselves, had remained silent.  Until now, that is, with the band’s original lineup of Torjus Slettsnok on vocals, Simon Skøien on guitars, Karl Johan Johannessen on drums and Pål Eirik Veseth on bass, storming back, having replaced their classic 90’s hardcore sound, with its heavy metal twist, with one that embodies the essence of Black Metal, Punk and Old School rock’n’roll.

The result of this new direction is a more introverted and less aggressive approach to music, resulting in “Null”, an album which still subtly hints at VESTINDIEN’s hardcore roots, but  whose songs are dark, desperate and desolate, with some hard-hitting punches of energy and groove.

Set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 12th February 2021, tracklisting for “Null” is as follows:

1. Mot Dag
2. Berenberg
3. Meldrøye
4. Null
5. Ormegard
6. Ned
7. Øst for Sol

“Null” will appear in CD, DIgital and Black/Gold Vinyl formats, and can be pre-ordered from the following:

With the intention of ending the dullest year in the history of live music with a bit of fun, we have managed to scrape together a short list of exclusive shows in Norway. We may or may not appear on stage wrapped in plastic and bathing in pools of antibac. Yet in spite of all restrictions, we will put tremendous effort into re-igniting life’s spark, and pull you all back out of the grey pandemic haze and into the land of the living. All this while safely remaining 1 meter from death.

With a career spanning over a decade and with four full-length albums and hundreds  of shows under their collective belts, VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ lineup of  Øyvind Madsen and  Eivind Huse on Guitars, Tor Helge Gjengedal on Drums, Kyrre Teigen on Bass and Bjørnar E. Nilsen on Vocals,  is noted not just for the technical skill of its members, but also for the eccentric  antics of frontman Nilsen, whose on-stage weirdness is much-appreciated by the fans of the band  the world-over.

Norwegian Black Metallers ENDEZZMA, who have just inked a two-album deal with Dark Essence Records, recently  managed to recover some lost tapes with material from a video shoot filmed shortly after the release of the band’s 2017 album “The Arcane Abyss” .  As the band explains:

With the new upcoming album soon to be dropped by Dark Essence records,  ENDEZZMA is about to enter a brand new era which will include new epic,  professionally  shot videos which will also be released soon in all their monumental glory.  However,  we wanted to close “The Arcane Abyss” chapter with a Nekro old school video that expresses the wild energy within the band. That album was such a fierce and rabid ride for us and it feels good to add a video production to it.

The track we used for the video is  “Serpent Earth” and, at a time of plague and disease where live rituals are strictly limited, we decided to dig up the lost tapes and hand them over to the talented music video director Guilherme Henriques for an exclusive edit, and he has produced a gloomy , intense and pitch- black manifestation.

The video is a dedicated to the old school black metal souls out there , lets burn the night with rabid force and malevolent hunger. THIS IS STELLAR DARKNESS…WE ARE ENDEZZMA… “

The video for “Serpent Earth” can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/Va_OX3DnSJw

Formed in 2006 by frontman M. Shax, ENDEZZMA’s original lineup featured URGEHAL’s late, and much lamented, Trondr Nefas.  The duo, joined by other, experienced Norwegian musicians, quickly established a die-hard following, impressed by the band’s live appearances, which were imbued with  morbid overtones and an undercurrent of barely-suppressed viciousness.   “Alone”, ENDEZZMA’s aptly named first release,  cemented the band’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with. A band that went its own way, regardless of what others thought, or were doing.

The debut full-length “Erotik Nekrosis” appeared in 2012, and proved that ENDEZZMA was a band well-able to weave an old school atmosphere into  eerie, seductive, modern compositions, and produce  an album full of necro requiems.    It also marked the death of Trondr Nefas, which left  a vacuum within the band.  A  vacuum that was eventually filled by guitarist M. Malphas, which allowed ENDEZZMA to go on to explore mystical dark fields with their sophomore full-length “Arcane Abyss”.

Aside from Shax on vocals and Malphas on guitars, ENDEZZMA’s lineup includes Nihil on Rythm Guitar,  Skriu on  Drums and Aske on  Bass  –  a group of experienced musicians, hungry to bring their brand of brutal, fiercely intense, and yet aesthetically mystical approach, to Dark Essence Records, a label they know will understand where they are coming from, and where they want to go.

More information about the upcoming album, which will be ENDEZZMA’s third full-length release, will be announced shortly, and the band recently had this to say about it:

Together with Dark Essence we intend to meet the high expectations that have been placed on us, and come out with an album of extremely strong material that will take fans into a mystical world of stellar darkness filled with mythical outcasts and characters.

Karisma Records have today released a single from “Dwellers of the Deep”, the much-anticipated, fifth full-length album from Prog Rockers WOBBLER.  Titled “Five Rooms” the single is available to stream or download at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Wobbler_FiveRooms

The band had this to say about it:

“Five Rooms” is a fast paced song based on some bass ideas from Krisitan. It developed quickly into a song full of energy and interplay, but also with sacral and dreamy passages. “Five Rooms” was a wrap early in the process and we even tried it out live a couple of times on the From Silence to Somewhere tour. We worked a lot with the arrangement of the different sections in the song, to make it flow along and feel organic and natural, even though it bounces between here and there and is full of contrast.

With “Five Rooms” standing out right from the start as an obvious choice for a single, the band also decided to shoot a music video, which was something new for them.

As WOBBLER explains:

The video was filmed during one hot Oslo day in June utilising the beautiful surroundings of the baroque room at the Linderud Gård, and it has allowed us to offer a slice from the upcoming album, presented in moving pictures and resplendent colours. As the summer is slowly starting to fade from the earth, we invite you to join us on that high summers day and walk with us through Five Rooms.

Filmed and edited by Mike Drop, the video for “Five Rooms” can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/bpOQp9gCfQA

The album itself promises to serve up an exciting blend of both carefully planned, and passionately jammed compositions, encompassing everything WOBBLER has done up to now. The new musical directions showcased on “Dwellers of the Deep” serve to further enhance the quintet’s aural idiosyncrasies, and solidify the band’s burgeoning stature as one of the most exciting and interesting bands on the global music scene, independent of genre.

The production on “Dwellers of the Deep” is open, detailed, warm and punchy, making the soundscapes put together by Lars Fredrik Frøislie an aural feast for the ears . With cover illustration by Athanasius Kircher, and graphic design by Thomas Kaldhol, “Dwellers Of The Deep” consists of four distinctive pieces and is a fine example of WOBBLER´s trademark creative whims and playful exuberance. Track listing is as follows:

1. By the Banks (13:49)
2. Five Rooms (08:28)
3. Naiad Dreams (04:24)
4. Merry Macabre (19:00)

“Dwellers Of The Deep” will be available in Digipak and Jewel case CD, digital formats, as well as in four different 180 gram gatefold vinyl editions; black vinyl, two different limited edition coloured vinyls, and a limited edition transparent vinyl. All the limited editions come with a poster.

“Dwellers of the Deep” is now available to pre-order from:

Vestindien Logo PR

VESTINDIEN  might not be a band that is immediately recognisable to most music fans, but that’s about to change, because the Bergen-based  band has just been snapped up by Dark Essence Records.

Formed in 2009, VESTINDIEN’s first, and up to now, only, release, was 2011’s debut EP “We are the Lords of Hellfire”, which delivered classic 90’s hardcore, with a heavy metal twist.  But only one year after its release, and despite having built up a solid following eager to experience the band’s  frenetic live shows, VESTINDIEN called it a day.

Absolute silence followed for the next seven years, until, in 2019, some of the band members got together and decided that VESTINDIEN needed to make music again.  And make music is exactly what the band’s current lineup of Torjus Slettnosk on vocals, Simon Skøien on guitars, Karl Johan Johannessen on drums and Pål Eirik Veseth on bass did, demonstrating a more introverted and less aggressive approach to their art.

It was at this point that  Dark Essence entered the picture, as Slettsnok explains:

Dark Essence was the only label we contacted when the album was finished. It was important to us that the label be based in Bergen, with people we trust. The only other option would have been to do it ourselves.

We were of course very happy when they felt the same way as we do about our music and we are looking forward to collaboration with the very good people of Dark Essence.

Meer 2020 PR2

Karisma Records have welcomed alternative pop orchestra MEER into its capacious fold.

MEER started out as a duo known as TED GLEN EXTENDED, in Hamar, Norway, in 2008, and, since then, the duo have expanded considerably, to become,  what is today,  an eight-piece eclectic collective whose music is a mix of orchestral pop, classical music and progressive rock. With their grandiose string arrangements and polyphonic vocals, MEER’s sound is far from minimalistic and flows in seemingly constant motion.

Today’s lineup comprises Johanne Kippersund on vocals, Knut Kippersund on vocals, Eivind Strømstad on guitar, Åsa Ree on violin, Ingvild Nordstoga Eide on viola, Ole Gjøstøl on piano, Morten Strypet on bass and Mats Lillehaug on drums, and this is what the band had to say about their decision to join Karisma Records:

We are absolutely thrilled to be signing with Karisma Records! We have been working on this album for a long time, and are super excited to be teaming up with a record company with so much knowledge and passion for progressive music. To be a part of their great list of artists is an honour, and we couldn’t be happier.

Karisma have not yet announced a release date for “Playing House”, which will be a follow up to MEER’s 2016, self-titled album. Recorded at the Ocean Sound Recording and Tanken, with producer Lars Gärtner Fremmerlid (EINAR STRAY ORCHESTRA) “Playing House”  will see MEER taking their prog pop one step further in both directions!
