Spacebrain

When sculptor Spacebrain released “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, the debut album from his SUCHTHAUS project, in 2011, it was immediately apparent that not only was the music he produced eclectic, but so too were his collaborators,  ranging from Maniac  (SKITLIV, ex-Mayhem) to  CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Fredrik A. Juell  (BURNING RUBBER,  BERSERK BASTARDS) and singer Sibob Jawara.  Now, with the band’s sophomore album “Motorbrain” taking shape, it seems that the tradition is set to continue, when SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth dropped by Spacebrain’s Oslo home recently to check in with his old friends, and ended up contributing vocals on one of the new tracks, which also showcases a performance by SUCHTHAUS drummer Hellhammer (MAYHEM).   Since Spacebrain likes to “visualise” the band’s music as well, a video for the track, which is titled “Walls of Berlin”, was filmed on the spur of the moment, and can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/k–Wu4DWeQM

To try and classify SUCHTHAUS’ music is virtually impossible, since the musicians concerned work in a completely unstructured way, drawing on their mood at the time to take the ideas for each track forward, rather than writing set pieces.  And, as previously mentioned, each track is enhanced by video, a practice which is unsurprising coming from a musician who started his career as a visual artist. Commenting on the new album, Spacebrain had this to say:  “Motorbrain” will be totally different from our debut, “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, as this time we will be making a pure metal album, but one that focuses on different nuances within the genre. Let’s just say that when we had a band meeting recently we concluded that we’d better hurry up and finish this album because the darker material was not good for our mental health!”   Along with Spacebrain on vocals and bass, and Hellhammer on drums, SUCHTHAUS lineup includes co-founder Fruen on vocals and guitars, Ingvar on guitars and AD/HD on bass.

Explaining how his unexpected contribution to “Motorbrain” came about Niklas Kvarforth said: “Last weekend, Hoest (TAAKE) and I were on our way to a studio outside Oslo to do some recording for a project we’re both involved in. We did however have a few hours to kill in the capital before catching our train and ended up meeting some old friends of ours – an evening which unexpectedly resulted in additional recordings in the living room of former SKITLIV bassist Spacebrain for his upcoming SUCHTHAUS album. Spacey filmed some of it, which kinda bothered me at first, but for him… I owe him way more than that. Looking forward to hearing the result.”

Having released SARKOM’s third full-length album “Doomsday Elite” earlier this month, DARK ESSENCE RECORDS have today, the 28th October,  released the band’s two earlier albums – 2006’s “Aggravation of Mind” and 2008’s “Bestial Supremacy”.  Originally released on the now defunct Twilight Vertrieb label, both albums are now almost impossible to get hold of, and will initially be available digitally, before an eventual release in CD format at an as yet unspecified date.   Both will come with revised artwork, and are available from all the usual digital retailers as well as direct from Dark Essence Records at http://shop.klicktrack.com/karismadarkessencerecords .

The lineup on both “Aggravation of Mind”, which was SARKOM’s debut album, and the sophomore album “Bestial Conspiracy”, comprises Unsgaard on vocals, Sagstad on guitars and bass, and Renton on drums.  “Passion for Suicide” from the “Aggravation of the Mind” album and “Inferior Bleeding” from “Bestial Supremacy” can be heard on the player above, together with two tracks from SARKOM’s latest album “Doomsday Elite, and at http://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records. Track listing for the albums as follows:

AGGRAVATION OF MIND

1. Bloodstains on the Horns
2. Embraced You Shall Be
3. Alpha – Omega
4. The Chosen One
5. Aggravation of Mind’s Syndrome
6. Inside the Memories
7. Passion for Suicide
8. Cryptic Void

BESTIAL SUPREMACY (2008)
1. Inferior Bleeding
2. I Call Your Name
3. Bestial Supremacy
4. Infected
5. Parallel to a Wall of Fire
6. Symbolic Revulsion
7. Artificial
8. Revival of Torment
9. Crushing the Retrospective Dominions
10. Finalizing Sovereignty

The digital release of SARKOM’s earlier albums hot on the heels for the band’s current output provides an interesting way to chart the band’s progression over the years, especially for the newer fans that have so far been unable to get hold of the original releases, and more so for a band that, according to frontman and founder Unsgaard (SO MUCH FOR NOTHING), refuses to stick to a formula just because it has proven successful, but continues to push the boundaries.

SARKOM was recently the first band to be confirmed to appear at next year’s Hammerslag Festival in February.  More information about SARKOM can be found on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/sarkom

“The Greatest Show on Earth” the title track from the new album from Prog Rockers AIRBAG has been previewed today by Karisma Records.   Set for release on the 4th of November, “The Greatest Show on Earth” will be available as a standard jewel case CD and a limited edition vinyl replica style CD, as well as a double vinyl gatefold in both black and limited edition white version. The album will also be available digitally.  The track can be heard on the player above and at http://soundcloud.com/karisma-records/airbag-the-greatest-show-on

A band known for its musical craftsmanship, AIRBAG’s third full-length album has taken 18 months of painstaking work to ensure that the quality of the work surpasses what went before.  Whilst “The Greatest Show on Earth” shows an edgier side to the band with the inclusion of some heavier passages, the trademark AIRBAG sound is still very much intact.  With “The Greatest Show on Earth” Bjørn Riis (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, bass, co-producer), Asle Tostrup (vocals, keyboards, programming, producer, graphic design), Henrik Fossum (drums), Jørgen Hagen (programming, keyboards) and Anders Hovdan (bass), create a sonic experience that ranges from massive walls of sound, to ambient textures and soulful soundscapes to explore the growing sense of alienation and distrust that the individual feels when confronted by society and authority, whilst at the same time being manipulated and misled into believing that each person is in control of their self-absorbed lives.

Full track listing for “The Greatest Show on Earth”, which comes in at around 50 minutes and was engineered and co-produced by Vegard Sleipnes, is as follows and can be pre-ordered from http://karismarecords.bigcartel.com/artist/airbag :

1. Surveillance (part 1)
2. Redemption
3. Silence Grows
4. Call Me Back
5. The Greatest Show on Earth
6. Surveillance (part 2-3)

AIRBAG’s next live appearance will be at the release show for “The Greatest Show on Earth” at the John Dee in Oslo, Norway on the 30th October.   More information about AIRBAG can be found on the band’s website http://www.airbagsound.com

A video teaser for “Futile” the debut full-length album from EUDAIMONY, the band formed by former DARK FORTRESS frontman Matthias Jell and NAGLFAR’s Marcus E. Norman (BEWITCHED, HAVAYOTH, ANCIENT WISDOM)  has been released on YouTube.  The video was created by Sebastian Schneider of Sonic Room Recordings and features excerpts from all the tracks from the eight track album, as well as some of the album artwork, which was designed by Ben Borucki (Irrleuchten) from the German band SONIC REIGN.  The video can be seen above and at http://youtu.be/pjPheu8OO58

Aside from Jell on vocals and Norman on guitars, bass, synthesizer and programming, EUDAIMONY’s German/Swedish lineup also includes Jörg Heemann (SECRETS OF THE MOON) on drums and Peter Honsalek (NACHTREICH) on viola.   Despite a lineup that could suggest a style of music that belongs somewhere within the Black Metal/DSBM genres, EUDAIMONY charts its own individual path as the band explores the hopelessness and futility of life, musically, visually and lyrically, with the use of rich melodies that are at times gentle and haunting and at times dark and brooding.   Guests on the album, which was mixed and mastered by Markus Stock at the Klangschmiede Studio E, include Mick Moss of ANTIMATTER and Schwadorf of EMPYRIUM and THE VISION BLEAK.

Track listing for “Futile”, which will hit the streets on the Cold Dimensions label on the 29th November is as follows:

1. Ways to Indifference
2. Mute
3. A Window in the Attic
4. Futile
5. Portraits (guest vocals by Mick Moss)
6. Cold
7. Godforsaken
8. December’s Hearse (guest vocals by Schwadorf)

“Lost Among Liars”, the video for a track from “The Tower, the new album from Norwegian Avant-garde Metallers VULTURE INDUSTRIES, will be featured at this year’s Kort and Kortkino Film Festival, which specialises in short films and which will take place from the 14th to the 17th November in Sandnes, Norway.  The theme of the Festival for this year is “Sound”, and “Lost Among Liars” will be included in the programme on Thursday the 14th, along with a video from fellow Norwegian’s KVELERTAK.  More information about the Kort and Kortkino Film Festival can be found at http://www.kortkino.no/kinokino/public/openIndex?ARTICLE_ID=5050

Romanian multi-media artist COSTIN CHIOREANU is the man behind the video, which is an animated surreal visual critique of today’s society that takes us on a journey through a surreal cityscape populated by people and machines, each with their own different duties and functions. From the vagrant loser, to the dutiful cog in the wheel of industry, to the facade of family life, to the mask salesman, all of them leading us through a story of oppression, elevation of control, and freedom.  Educated at the Bucharest National University of Arts, CHIOREANU has made his mark as a stage artist, musician, animator and movie maker, who, despite his relatively young age, has created the cover art for musicians such as ULVER, ISHAHN, ARCTURUS, AURA NOIR and DARKTHRONE, as well as VULTURE INDUSTRIES themselves.  He is the official artist for the Roadburn Festival 2014, and has been the driving force behind book and album launches.  More information about COSTIN CHIOREANU can be found at http://twilight13media.com/

VULTURE INDUSTRIES recently joined forces with The THE HAPPY GORILLA DANCE company to perform ”Turning Golem”  a show that is part concert rooted in the heavier segment of experimental/progressive metal and part theatre performance.  The only remaining chance to see “Turning Golem” outside of Norway this year will be on the 26th October at the Phantoms of Pilsen Festival in the Czech Republic.  Those living in Norway however, will not only be able to witness “Turning Golem” at the Garage in Bergen on the 25th October, but also an exhibition of some of COSTIN CHIOREANU’s artwork for “The Tower”.  A promo video for the event can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/vaB1s9YjR6E

VULTURE INDUSTRIES will upload five of the pieces of artwork that will be shown at the exhibition onto their Facebook page, one each day leading up to the event.  They can be seen at http://www.facebook.com/vultureindustries

The “Lost Among Liars” video from the VULTURE INDUSTRIES album “The Tower” can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/Q2mYnayKNd8

“When You Go Beyond I Will Become A Memory”, one of the pieces by COSTIN CHIOREANU which will be featured at the exhibition in Bergen can be seen below.

Long-time fans of BLUTMOND may have been surprised by the lineup that took to the stage recently at the HarVest Festival in Switzerland when two new members – Simon on guitar and Fabio on drums and samples, joined vocalist and guitarist John, vocalist and bassist Jerry, and saxophonist and guitarist Marc on stage.  It was, according to John, who is one of the original founders of the band, something of a final audition for the two musicians, albeit one that was pretty much a foregone conclusion as both  had already proved to everyone’s satisfaction that they fitted in perfectly with the rest of BLUTMOND in terms of both musicianship and commitment.

Since its formation in 2004 BLUTMOND has never been a band that has been happy to limit itself to a formulaic nod in the direction of a particular genre.  Starting out as a Black Metal band and releasing their first full length album “Endzeit” in 2006, BLUTMOND quickly developed a reputation for their insane and provocative live shows, which, whilst raising their profile throughout Europe, also led them to realise that the time had come to create something that was more emotional and honest.

As is often the case when bands choose a different direction, not every member was on board with the idea, which resulted in a few lineup changes, and the recruitment of a new guitarist and saxophonist.  With Code666/Aural Music picking up their sophomore full-length album, “Thirteen Urban Ways 4 Groovy Bohemian Days” appeared in 2010, followed at the end of 2012 by “The Revolution is Dead!”, once again on Code666. These two albums demonstrated that BLUTMOND was obviously forging ahead down a more avant-garde path, but one that definitely had a distinctive edge to it.

Now that 2013 is drawing to a close, John has begun writing new material for the band’s fourth full-length album.  “I’ve built myself a small studio in my apartment which makes it much easier for me to work on the music as I can have access whenever I want. It’s early days yet, and we’re not ready to reveal too much about the direction we’re taking, but I don’t think anyone is going to be disappointed”.

BLUTMOND’s next live appearance will be at the Headbangers Ball at Grafitti in Bern, Switzerland, on the 9th of November.   More information about BLUTMOND can be found on the band’s facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/blutmond.official

Today’s line up combines impressive musical skills with an abundance of enthusiasm, charisma and high energy that produces what DEAD TROOPER themselves call “groovy, aggressive thrash metal”. The presence of Morten on vocals and guitars, Andreas Stenvoll (BLODSPOR, ex-TROLL) on bass and vocals and Jon Eirik Bokn (ZEROZONIC, BREED, AUTUMN INSPIRATION) on drums, gives an indication of the amount of experience both in the studio and on stage that these musicians bring with them.

DEAD TROOPER will appear at a special launch concert for “Erector” at the Cafe Fiasco in Oslo, Norway, on the 25th October.  More information about DEAD TROOPER can be found on the band’s website at http://www.deadtrooper.com/
