Norwegian Extreme Metallers PANTHEON I, have invited fans to make a video using one of the two exclusive tracks that the band recently recorded, but have only ever made public during radio interviews.  The track, “Martyr”, has been uploaded for the first time on the internet both on the band’s SoundCloud page and as a DIY YouTube video made by PANTHEON I‘s Andre’ Kvebek, and which, as the frontman says, inspired the idea of a competition:  “We are always seeing YouTube users making videos out of just about any song out there, so I thought I’d give it a go myself with one of our tracks.  It’s my first ever attempt, and basically it’s just a bit of info about the band since I’m not up to making anything more complicated at this stage.   Then it occurred to us, why not let the YouTube fans see what they can do with it.  We’re not expecting a big production, just a personal interpretation of the song, and the winning video maker will get some Pantheon I merch and the video will be up loaded onto our channel”.

Kvebek’s video for “Martyr” can be seen at http://youtu.be/fJSwVCjFLSo (and at the end of this item)   and the track can be heard at http://soundcloud.com/pantheon-i/pantheon-i-martyr-promo-track (as well as on the player at the top of this page).  The competition will close on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and the winner will be announced on New Year’s Day.  Anyone wanting more information or to enter the competition or should send a message to the band through their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pantheoni .  Likewise for any finished videos, please send a message with a link to the video.

PANTHEON I recently entered the Skansen Lydstudio in Trondheim to begin recording their fourth full-length album and drum tracks have already been laid down,  with Vegar “Vyl” Larsen (KEEP OF KALESSIN, CHTON, live session drums for GORGOROTH) behind the kit in place of the band’s drummer Mads G (THE ALL SEEING I, ZEENON) who is currently unwell.   Aside from Kvebek, the line up includes former ABSU guitarist Aethyris McKay on guitars and clean vocals, cellist LiveJulianne, Sagstad (TROLLFEST, SARKOM) on guitars and T.R.S. (1349, DEN SAAKALDTE) on bass.  Drummer Mads G will continue with the band, and will only be absent for the recording of the new album.

A tape version, of PANTHEON I’s very first album “Atrocity Divine”, limited to 150 copies, has recently been released through Silent Scream Records.  Artwork for the tape is by the Norwegian artist Kjell Åge Meland who has worked with the band on all their releases.   More information about PANTHEON I can be found on the band’s website at http://www.facebook.com/pantheoni

Details of the third full-length album from UK Progressive Black Metallers FEN have been announced today.  The seven-track album “Dustwalker” is set for release on the 21st of January on Code666 Records, and will be appear in both CD format and as a limited edition Clambox which will feature a bonus track and include a pendant with the band’s distinctive logo.  Artwork for the album is by the FEN’s bass player Grungyn.  Track listing for “Dustwalker” as follows:

I. Consequence
II. Hands of Dust
III. Spectre
IV. Reflections
V. Wolf Sun
VI. The Black Sound
VII. Walking the Crowpath
VIII. Epilogue (special edition bonus track)

FEN was formed in 2006 by The Watcher (guitars and vocals), Grungyn (bass and vocals) and drummer Theutus.  The latter would later leave the band, to be replaced on drums by Derwydd.  Setting out to meld the cold rage that runs through Black Metal with the more introspective and reflective emotions found in the post-rock/shoegaze genres, FEN was able to evoke, through music, a vision of the Fens, an area in England noted for its desolate, windswept landscapes.  Like the region after which the band is named, FEN’s music has an almost other worldly aura that speaks of loss and unrequited yearning.

“Dustwalker” will be FEN’s third album on Code666, who previously released the band’s debut full-length “The Malediction Fields” in 2009 and “Epoch” in 2011.  FEN recently announced that they had re-signed with the Code666, a sub label of Aural Music, for a further three albums after “Dustwalker”.  Commenting on “Dustwalker “, frontman The Watcher had this to say: “If “Epoch” embodies a lonely walk into the deepening twilight of the fens in Autumn, then “Dustwalker” represents the cold, sharp greys of a bleak winter’s dawn.  An expression of isolation, abandonment and a gradual detachment from the material realm, this album is a starker, more direct representation of the Fen sound.”

More information about FEN can be found on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fenofficial

Norwegian Viking Metallers HELHEIM are set to celebrate their 20 year history with a special concert at the Inside Rock Café in their home town of Bergen on Friday 2nd November.  The event will also feature local bands and special guests, and, according to the band, the venue, with its intimate surroundings, has been especially chosen so that it becomes a true celebration amongst fans and friends.   However, after receiving many messages from fans outside of Norway who would obviously not be able to attend, HELHEIM have decided to stream the performance live on their website at http://www.helheim.com/live and the stream will begin at precisely 22:00 Norwegian time and will remain available to be viewed for a period of time after the event.

NARROWHEAD, whose frontman has frequently guested on vocals for HELHEIM, along with the all-girl rock band FAIRY and punk rockers BEINKJØR will also be playing at the event.  There will be other guests throughout the evening, but according to HELHEIM: “we prefer to keep it all as a surprise.  It wouldn’t be a real party if there weren’t a few surprises for everyone!”

Rather than being one of the manufactured Viking acts that proliferate on the scene these days, HELHEIM, have, throughout their 20 years of existence, always remained true to their Norse Heritage.  As one of the oldest of Norway’s Viking bands, HELHEIM, with their majestic epic songs convey an accurate and proud sense of past, not just through their lyrics and music, which often includes the use of traditional instruments,  but also in their stage performances, which feature VJ effects that enhance the themes and concepts explored by the band.  More information about HELHEIM can be found on the band’s website at http://www.helheim.com

Sweden’s SHINING will head for Croatia and Slovenia next year to play two festivals in countries in which the band has rarely appeared before.  First up will be the Burning Sea Festival in Zadar, Croatia on the 8th June, followed by Metal Days, in Tolmin, Slovenia on the 25th July.  SHINING has so far also been confirmed to appear at the RAGNAROK festival in Lichtenfels, Germany, in April.

Founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth recently announced that he would be publishing a book containing all the lyrics he has ever written and which, rather than allowing them to be translated by a professional translator and thereby risk losing the emotions that went into them,  he himself has translated into English from the original Swedish.  The first edition paperback, “When Prozac No Longer Helps”,  will be hand-numbered in the author’s own blood and will be published on the 7th December.  In order to ensure that genuine fans can get hold of the book, “When Prozac No Longer Helps” will only be available through the SHINING web shop and can be pre-ordered at http://www.shininglegions.com/product/niklas-kvarforth-when-prozac-no-longer-helps-first-edition-paperback

SHINING this week released their eighth full length album  ”Redefining Darkness” on Spinefarm Records.  In a departure from the band’s usual habit of including the album number in the title, ”Redefining Darkness” contains no number, but still maintains all the complexity and distinct character that sets SHINING apart from so many of the identikit bands that proliferate on the scene today. More information about SHINING can be found on the band’s website at www.shiningasylum.com

Details of the “And Now For Something Completely Different Tour” with a four-band line of experimental/avant-garde bands headed by VIRUS have been announced today.  Joining the cult Norwegians will be fellow countrymen VULTURE INDUSTRIES and KRAKOW along with the MONDVOLLAND from the Netherlands.  Confirmed dates on the December tour as follows and anyone interested in booking the two remaining dates should contact bjornar@propulsionmusic.no:

Fri 07 Dec:  Willemeen , Arnhem (NL)
Sat 08 Dec: Ferrailleur,  Nantes (FR)
Sun 09 Dec: Glazart,  Paris (FR)
Mon 10 Dec: Markthalle, Hamburg (DE)
Tue 11 Dec:  The Underworld,  London (UK)
Wed 12 Dec: TBC
Thu 13 Dec: Orto Bar,  Ljubljana (SLO)
Fri 14 Dec: Gaswerk Kulturzentrum, Winterthur (CH)
Sat 15 Dec: TBC

VIRUS was formed in 2000 by guitarist / singer Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide (AURA NOIR, former / founder member of ULVER, SATYRICON, DØDHEIMSGARD, CADAVER etc., along with bass player extraordinaire Petter “Plenum” Berntsen (AUDIOPAIN) and drummer Einar “Einz” Sjursø (LAMENTED SOULS, INFERNÖ,ex BEYOND DAWN), with the intention of taking key elements of Czral’s former avant-garde black metal band VED BUENS ENDE further into weirdness and farther from metal. Through three critically acclaimed album releases Czral’s unique dissonant guitar flavour and song writing has fascinated, puzzled and ensnared listeners worldwide, not least thanks to the live performances (as a 5-piece) the band have undertaken since early 2011, including  Sonisphere, Brutal Assault, Hole In The Sky, Aurora Infernalis etc.

VIRUS is also set to release a mini album to coincide with the tour.  Titled “Oblivion Clock”, the album runs at over thirty minutes and features four new track and three bonus tracks that until now have only been available on extremely limited releases.  At the same time band will also be releasing a new vinyl edition of their sophomore album “The Black Flux”.  “Oblivion Clock”, together with a new line of VIRUS merchandise, will be available as a digifile CD on the tour, and is also already available to pre-order from virulentmusic.bigcartel.com along with the “Black Flux” vinyl. More information about VIRUS can be found on the band’s website at http://virusnorway.com/

The other three bands on the tour all bring their own very individual interpretations of the eclectic experimental/avant-garde genre.  VULTURE INDUSTRIES, whose style tends towards the more progressive and extreme, are fronted by Bjornar Nilsen, known for his manic theatrical performances which garner praise for the band wherever they appear.  They have just signed with Season of Mist for the release of their third-full length album, and will be debuting new material during the tour.  More information on VULTURE INDUSTRIES can be found the band’s website at http://www.vulture-industries.net/

KRAKOW, whose second full-length album “diin” was released on Dark Essence Records in September, could fit equally well within the post-rock, metal and stoner rock genres with a sound that ranges from dark, evocative and mesmerizing to fast, aggressive and heavy.  They recently added KAMPFAR drummer Ask Ty Arctander to their line up. More information about KRAKOW can be found on the band’s website at http://www.krakowofficial.com/

Rounding off the line up is MONDVOLLAND, who bring touches of Black Folk metal deeply rooted in ancient myths and traditions of the Eastern Netherlands to their music. The release of their “Pestvogel” EP earlier this year showed that MONDVOLLAND was embarking on a different route from their debut full-length “d’Olde Roop”, with the intention of breathing new life into the somewhat staid Pagan/Folk scene. More information about MONDVOLLAND can be found on the band’s website at http://www.mondvolland.com/

Norwegian Black Metallers ENDEZZMA, whose debut full-length album “Erotik Nekrosis” will be released on Agonia Records on the 28th of November in Europe and on the 5th of February in the USA, have been in the studio filming a video for “Junkyard Oblivion”, the opening track from the album.  Morten Shax, the band’s frontman had this to say about the video: “We chose this particular track because of all the tracks on the album it feels like a link between the music of ENDEZZMA a few years ago, and the ENDEZZMA of today.  The whole idea of a video was something new for us, it’s not a medium we had worked with before, and it proved to be a very interesting process.  We are satisfied with the shoot, and the eventual outcome looks promising.  After a weekend of determined effort and some very hard work I hope we managed to create something that was as morbid and memorable as we had originally envisaged”.   It is anticipated that the video will be ready to release on the 1st of December.  Stills from the video can be seen at the end.

“Erotik Nekrosis” is the follow up to the “Alone” EP which was released five years ago.  The seven-track album with artwork by the Kazakhstani artist Alexandr Balinets, has a line up that speaks of years of experience in the realms of Black Metal with Morten Shax on vocals, the late Trondr Nefas (URGEHAL, BEASTCRAFT, VULTURE LORD), Thomas Myrvold (VULTURE LORD) and Mattis Malphas (BEASTCRAFT) on guitars, Sregroth (URGEHAL, ÅSMEGIN) on bass and Carl Balam (NATTEFROST, ASTAROTH, ex INFERNAL) on drums.  According to Shax, “Erotik Nekrosis” will serve as a tribute to Nefas, whose contribution to the album was considerable and whose loss has been keenly felt by the Norwegian Black Metal community.

“Erotik Nekrosis” can be pre-ordered from Agonia Records at http://www.agoniarecords.home.pl/index.php?pos=shop&lang=en&section=search&what=erotik+nekrosis&x=0&y=0 and more information about ENDEZZMA can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/endezzma

With a release date set for early December 2012, BLODARV have today revealed the track listing and artwork for “Gâst”, the fourth full-length album from the veteran Danish Black Metallers.  The eight-track album will be released in two versions on Self Mutilation Services – regular CD format and a limited edition in A5 format which will feature different artwork.  Both versions come with a 16 page booklet which includes lyrics. Limited edition merchandise will also be available to mark the release.   All artwork for “Gâst” is done by the blasphemer himself – BLODARV founder and frontman HUGIN.  The recording, mixing and engineering were all done by HUGIN at his HammerArt and Studios, where the artwork was also produced, and which is located on the frontman’s home island of Bornholm.  Tracklisting for “Gâst”, which will run for 45 minutes, is as follows:

1. Indelukket
2. A Snowy Night In November
3. I Blaek Og Blod
4. Korset Paa Baalet
5. The Heart Of Art
6. Lonely Journey
7. Surrounded By Dust
8. Into The Halls Of Orion

In the Bornholmsk (Burgundian) dialect of Bornholm a “Gâst” is a type of a ghost demon or energy that possesses a mortal and inspires them in much the same way as a muse, with visions, stories, smells, sounds, emotions and pictures.  Commenting on the album, which is a powerful blend of BLODARV’s mid-tempo black metal spiced with both fast and slow tracks,  Hugin had this to say: “It’s fitting that the release of “Gâst” will take place in winter, when the winds howl and the snow blankets the island of Bornholm, creating the perfect setting for an album that explores life philosophies, death, the micro and macro cosmos, and the forces of nature and power of the universe and all the energies that cling to it. Like our previous releases, the album contains a mix of tracks in both Danish and English, and is a piece full of hateful blasphemous poetry, dark visions, possessive muses, and soul-seeking demons”.

The lineup on “Gâst” comprises BLODARV core members HUGIN on vocals, bass, guitars and effects, SATINAE MA on female vocals and PESTILENS on lead guitar.  Session studio drums are by YNLEBORGAZ .  BLODARV’s line up has just been expanded with the addition of FJORGYNN on drums whilst live bass is handled by session member HUUL. BLODARV’s next live appearance will be on the 1st December with HORNED ALMIGHTY at the Club Brutal in Arhus, Denmark.  They have also been confirmed to appear at next year’s Kvlt Fest which will be held on the 1-2 March in Odense.   More information about BLODARV can be found on the band’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/blodarvofficial

“Surrounded By Dust” a track from “Gâst”, together with tracks spanning BLODARV’s 14-year career can be heard on the band’s SoundCloud player at the top of the page and at http://soundcloud.com/blodarv/sets/blodarv

“I Blaek Og Blod”, another track from “Gâst”, can be heard below and on the BLODARV YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSWjAaKuHlk

A book containing all the lyrics ever written by SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth is set to be published on the 7th December.  The title will be “When Prozac No Longer Helps” and the first edition paperback will be hand-numbered in the author’s own blood.   The following statement regarding the publication of the book has been issued by Kvarforth:

“Far too long I’ve been pestered each and every day by people from all around this disgusting planet asking if I can translate this or that lyric into English. Up till a few months ago this seemed to be an impossible task due to the poetic style I use when writing Swedish. However, after several months of frustration I put something truly horrific together and was so pleased with the result that I decided to collect them all and publish them in the form of a book.

“I don’t think many of you are truly interested in reading these even though you say you are.  As we all know, it is “true” to state you really do care about the lyrics of a band like SHINING, but that’s probably the only reason you say so.  However, I might be proven wrong.  And to anyone bitching about the high price, well, it cost tons of money to print a fine edition in such a low quantity, and I am certainly not into charity.”

To ensure that everyone who is genuinely interested in the book gets a chance to get a copy, “When Prozac No Longer Helps” will only be sold through SHINING’s webshop and is now available to pre-order from http://www.shininglegions.com/product/niklas-kvarforth-when-prozac-no-longer-helps-first-edition-paperback

SHINING’s eighth full-length album, “Redefining Darkness”, is due for release on Spinefarm Records on October 29th.  More information about SHINING can be found on the band’s website at http://www.shiningasylum.com/

It can’t have escaped the attention of any keen fan or observer of the Black Metal scene that, following a few years of relative inactivity, iconic Norwegians CARPATHIAN FOREST have this year once again begun performing live and have already announced some festival appearances for 2013.

Rumours as to why the band had gone to ground, and indeed, if there was even any band left at all, have been rife.  Now, however, an official statement issued by founder Nattefrost, has succinctly made clear the reasons for CARPATHIAN FOREST’s absence from the scene and has once and for all laid to rest any speculation about the band’s future.   Quoting the title of the band’s fifth album, the frontman candidly stated:  “I have more or less been off the road and caught in a downward spiral for nearly a decade.  Now clean and rehabilitated, I have been living in Telemark for more than a year – a family man and father.  And once again I am working on music.  Communication and chemistry within CARPATHIAN FOREST have never been better so “Fuck You All!!!”

The lineup, which remains unchanged from when the band was active, consists of of Nattefrost on vocals, Tchort and BloodPervertor on guitars, Vrangsinn on bass and Kobro on drums, and the members have been regularly rehearsing together not just for the live appearances, but also in preparation for recording new material, of which there is plenty according to Nattefrost.  The band has also just signed with the UK-based Mythology Agency for all European appearances, and anyone wishing to book the band should contact mark@mythology-live.com.  Booking outside of Europe will continue to be handled by the band’s management for the time being, and enquiries should be sent to patriciathomas@btinternet.com

Confirmed festival appearances for 2013 for CARPATHIAN FOREST include the Ragnarok Festival, Kings of Black Metal, Party.San, and Throne Fest, as well as the Maryland Deathfest, which will be band’s first ever show in the USA.  Further live announcements are expected shortly.  More information about CARPATHIAN FOREST can be found on the band’s Official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/carpathianforest

The first details of the latest album from Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have just been revealed.  Active on the Norwegian Black Metal scene since the mid-nineties, CREST OF DARKNESS, with its sonic brutality and dark themes, was founded by musician Ingar Amlien, who left behind his roots in progressive metal  to create a vehicle that would allow him to express his interest in Satanic ideology and vampirism.   Scheduled for release on the 11th February 2013 on My Kingdom Music, the ten-track album will be titled “In the Presence of Death” and promises to be the most complete, extreme and dark album the band has ever recorded.

Recently CREST OF DARKNESS announced the addition of DJEVELKULT guitarist Jan Fredrik Solheim to replace the outgoing Kjell Arne Hubred, a seven year veteran with the band who was leaving to devote more time to his young family, which, according to Amlien, was entirely understandable given that the band had plans increase activity with the upcoming release of the album.  Solheim, he went on to say has “brought a renewed sense of enthusiasm and purpose to the band, and as far as I’m concerned CREST OF DARKNESS is sounding better and stronger than ever”.   Aside from Amlien on bass and vocals and Solheim on guitars, CREST OF DARKNESS’ current lineup includes Rebo on guitars and Kjetil Hektoen on drums.

More details about the album will be available shortly, and further information about CREST OF DARKNESS can be found at http://www.crestofdarkness.com/
