Austrian Black Metallers HELLSAW entered Munich’s Dreamsound Studios last week to begin recording their fourth full-length album.  Titled “Trist”, the album will be the follow up to 2009’s “Cold” and is due for release on Napalm Records in early 2012.

Front man and founder Aries commented about the direction HELLSAW will take with the album.  “The German word “Trist” is difficult to define exactly but if you think of various connotations of solemnity and sadness you’d be thinking along the right lines.  “Cold” was more about melancholy, “Trist” is darker; it’s like the scent of fine whiskey and damp earth.

“As a band, we always prepare thoroughly before going into the studio, but this time we’ve rehearsed even more in order to perfect the sound for each track.  We’ve also sought to redefine the HELLSAW sound, without losing our identity.  There needs to be a certain amount of experimentation with each new album in order to bring the sound up to date.  Without giving too much away, with “Trist” we believe we have found the perfect symbiosis between the old and new elements.  All the songs are strong, and it will definitely kick ass”.

HELLSAW are scheduled to appear at a number of European festivals this year.  Confirmed so far are:

Fri 22 July – Hell Over Vellach (AT)
Sat 30 July – Baden in Blut (DE)
Sat 06 August – Wacken (DE)
Sat 17 Sept – STP Metal Weekend (AT)
Sat 01 Oct – Night Warriors Festival (AT)
Sat 29 Oct – The Dark Crusade Festival (AT)

Since Planking is fast becoming the most cult sport since, er… since, hmm… since the last cult sport, we thought that we would publish the TrollfesT Guide to Planking.

The following moves require skill and precision, and are performed by the super fit, athletic members of TrollfesT, so please ensure you do not try this on your own, at home, without supervision. OK, maybe not super fit.  Maybe not even very athletic but anyway…

1) “THE NOVICE”

As its name suggests, this is the perfect move for the novice.  The bench supports your entire body, and if you feel that keeping your legs straight  is too strenuous you can start with your knees bent, and progress to straightening your legs once you have gained confidence.  It is essential when performing this move, that someone with considerable strength holds the plank (as Trollmannen and Dr. Leif Kjønnsfleis are demonstrating) to avoid the danger of it tipping over .  Note how heavy boots are being used in this shot.  This makes holding the positioning even more difficult and is guaranteed to impress those amongst your audience with Shoe Fetishes.

2) “THE CHAIR”

Practitioners of Planking often overlook this move, and move straight on to the next one, but this is ideal to allow you to build more confidence in balancing both your legs and the top part of your torso.  And your head of course, because your head is attached to the upper part of your torso.  Chairs usually have a dip in them (especially if they have been used by  heavy Trolls), and this gives you a little more stability than a straight surface.  Having someone’s foot close by (as you can see in the foreground of the shot) is handy in case you start to roll off, because then they can nudge you back on with their toe.  You can of course grip the leg of the chair, but someone is bound to notice and call you a wuss.

3) “THE CROSSWISE PLANK”

Some say this is the ultimate position in Planking (but you haven’t seen our next one yet).  We have to admit that this is very difficult, as only a narrow portion of the body is supported, and it definitely helps to be built like that guy who plays Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O.  Nevertheless,  as TrollBANK is demonstrating, you don’t need washboard abs to perform it successfully.  You might like to ensure that your dangly bits are positioned comfortably to avoid them being crushed.

4) “THE COUCH POTATO”

Rarely practised by Plankers, the Couch Potato looks deceptively simple, but in fact it requires precision positioning of the beer belly so that it falls either side of the edge of the settee, otherwise there will be a tendency to wobble and result in tipping over.  It is the danger of tipping over that makes this move so dangerous, as it can result in the squashing, and consequent injury, either by crushing or suffocation, of the lower planker.  As you can see, Mr Seidel has positioned his beer belly to perfection.

Well that concludes our Guide to Planking.  We hope you haven’t taken it too seriously, and if you are trying this out at home – be safe.  To finish off, we have included our player so that you can enjoy some music while you Plank.

STROSZEK, the band founded by FROSTMOON ECLIPSE guitarist Claudio Alcara, has inked a deal with Canadian label Hypnotic Dirge Records for the release of the band’s third full length album.  Titled “Sound Graveyard Bound”, the nine-track album is scheduled for release during the latter part of 2011.

Alcara, who along with STROSZEK band mates Richard on drums and Davide on bass, is better known for his work with FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, one of the longest serving Italian Black Metal bands which earlier this year released their fifth full length album on Osmose Productions. Whilst FROSTMOON ECLIPSE mixes old school Black Metal with acoustic interludes, STROSZEK allows Alcara to perform the much more melodic and introspective style of music that he himself listens to, and indeed, “Sound Graveyard Bound” features a cover version of MIKE JOHNSON’s “If The World Hadn’t Gone Insane”

Commenting on the new album Alcara said “With the first release I tended to keep my vocals very far back in the mix.  As a guitarist I wasn’t used to being the centre of attention, and my vocal style is certainly not that of a “screamer”, on the contrary, I’m rather laid back,  but after three albums I’m confident that my vocal style suits the music, so this time I’m not too worried about hiding behind the instruments”.

As well as the 2007 debut album “Songs of Remorse” and 2009’s “Life’s Failures Made Music”, STROSZEK also released the “Wild Hunt” EP in 2009, which sold out within days of it having been announced. As with all the songs he writes for STROSZEK, “Sound Graveyard Bound” is very much an intimate journey through Alcara’s life which is highlighted by his distinctive and versatile guitar style that can alternate between heavy riffing and a fragile poignancy.   More information about STROSZEK can be found on the band’s MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/songsofremorse

Niklas Kvarforth, founder and front man of Swedish Extreme Metallers SHINING, today issued the following statement regarding the recent announcement by KING DIAMOND guitarist Andy La Rocque that he would be working with the band on the recording of their eighth album at his Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden.

“The pre-production stage of the new album should more or less be finished in August, and we have booked the studios for the whole of January and February 2012 to complete work on it.  It’s an album I’m particularly looking forward to recording because it will give me the chance to work with Andy La Rocque.   I am a huge KING DIAMOND fan, and working with Andy was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up.  He will be attending some of our rehearsals and it will be interesting to see what his input will be to the almost finished album and to SHINING’s particular sound.  Whilst we’re there, we also plan to record some covers for future release.  As to the direction VIII will take, well, for the time being let’s just say that it will be blacker and more sinister than our previous releases”.

SHINING is set to release the band’s first ever single this month, which comprises “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel”, the opening track from the newly released “VII / Född Förlorare”  album, plus a cover of ALICE COOPER’s “Prince of Darkness”.   Whilst the single, which is released on Spinefarm Records, will only be available in Sweden, the band is looking into the possibility of releasing other versions elsewhere.

Also newly released is SHINING’s first ever music video, which has received over 60,000 views since it was first uploaded onto YouTube two weeks ago.  The video, directed by Martin Strandberg & Niklas Kvarforth and produced by Martin Strandberg, uses the track “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel”, and was released in both censored and uncensored versions, to allow fans in countries with heavy censorship laws a chance to watch it.

Sweden’s extreme Metallers SHINING have, for the first time in the band’s 15 year history, released a video for a track from one of their albums. The video was Directed by Martin Strandberg & Niklas Kvarforth, produced by Martin Strandberg and created by Black Shadows Filmproductions & Hill Fifty and uses the track “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” from the new album “VII / Född Förlorare”. It has been released in both censored and uncensored versions given the graphic nature of some of the scenes, and can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/officialshining.

“We know we are going to get heavily criticised for some of the scenes” commented front man and founder Niklas Kvarforth, “but it’s nothing more than you will see as soon as you switch on a television or watch a movie, or walk down a city street come to that. But we’re SHINING and it’s always open season on SHINING when it comes to people who have neither understood, nor taken the time to try and understand, where the band is coming from”.

SHINING’s seventh full length album “VII / Född Förlorare”, which in English means “Born Loser” was released this month on the band’s new label Spinefarm Records, and includes guest appearances from Erik Danielsson of WATAIN, Chris Amott of ARCH ENEMY, Peter Bjärgö of ARCANA, and Nordman, who is one of Sweden’s biggest pop stars. The band also recently announced that it would be releasing its first ever single, which, aside from “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel”, will include a cover ALICE COOPER song “Prince of Darkness”. The single will only be available in Sweden for the time being, although, according to Kvarforth, the band is looking into the possibility of releasing a different version elsewhere.

HELLISH OUTCAST has debuted two tracks from the band’s upcoming album “Your God Will Bleed”.  A follow up to the controversial EP “Raping – Killing – Murder”, “Your God Will Bleed” will be HELLISH OUTCAST’s debut full length album, and the first release to feature the band’s new vocalist Thebon (KEEP OF KALESSIN), who joined the band in 2010. A label is currently being sought for the release of “Your God Will Bleed”, and the two debut tracks, “The View So Disgusting” and “Hubris” can be heard on the SoundCloud player abov

Formed in Bergen, Norway, in 2001 by drummer Mads Lilletvedt (BYFROST, SOLSTORM), guitarist Martin Legreid (66CRUSHER) and bassist Mads Mowinckel (BREED), HELLISH OUTCAST play a blood soaked mix of Thrash and Death Metal, and are seen as one of the most aggressive live bands on the burgeoning Bergen music scene.  The arrival of Thebon to front the band has given HELLISH OUTCAST a keener edge, and whilst fans in Norway have already been able to see him in action on stage, the chance for fans elsewhere will come this summer, when the band is due to play at Lithuania’s Devilstone Festival on the 15th July, and the UK’s Bloodstock Festival on the 14th August.

With the long-awaited seventh full-length album out this month on Spinefarm Records, Extreme Metallers SHINING are set to release a CD single which will only be available in their home country of Sweden.  The single will comprise two tracks, one being “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel”, taken from the new album “VII / Född Förlorare”, whilst the second will be a previously un-released cover of the ALICE COOPER song “Prince of Darkness”.

This will be the first time that SHINING has released a single, and founder and front man Niklas Kvarforth is hopeful that the new video, which was filmed recently and is currently being edited, will be included along with the two tracks.  “We are trying to get the video included, but the people behind the single are a little nervous, and probably quite rightly so given its subject matter and content.  We are looking into the possibility of maybe including a censored version.  We’ll see how that pans out, but whatever happens, the uncensored version will definitely appear very soon, so SHINING fans who have been waiting for it, will not be disappointed”.

Following the Swedish release, the band will consider the possibility of releasing a different version of the single elsewhere.

A band that blends Progressive elements with Thrash and classical Metal to produce a very distinctive sound, 66CRUSHER was formed in the late 1990’s by vocalist and guitarist Jarle Olsvoll and drummer Håkon Obdsaija Bergstad (ex DEVAR), in their home town of Bergen.  The arrival of Jonny Wolf on guitars and  Øystein Kummen on bass in 2001/02 allowed the band to really come into its own, and live appearances and a couple of demos followed, leading to an offer from the US label Misanthropica Enterprises for the release of ”Truth Unmasked”.  2009 saw one more change in the lineup, with the arrival of Martin Legreid to replace the departing Wolf.  Legreid, guitarist with  HELLISH OUTCAST, is considered by many to  be the godfather of the Bergen Thrash/Death Metal scene.  More information about the band can be found at http://www.66crusher.com
