TROLLFEST, the Folk Metal band that describes its music as “True Norwegian Balkan Metal”, will be presenting the winner of a competition to be held at this year’s MetalCamp Festival with a special prize that has been hand-carved by drummer TrollBank (Eirik Renton).   The carving is of “Brumlebassen”, the lead character from the band’s upcoming album of the same name, and whose job in the weird and wonderful world created by TROLLFEST is to look after the bees that produce the honey used to make the Trolls’ beloved mead.  The “Brumlebassen” carving will be signed by the entire band and presented as a prize in one of the competitions that TROLLFEST will run from their own pavilion at the festival.  A series of photos, including the process that went into carving the figure can be found on TROLLFEST’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/trollfestofficial

MetalCamp will see TROLLFEST play two sets.  One on the main stage, where the band will play the entire “Brumlebassen” album live for the first time, as well an acoustic concert on the beach.  From their Pavilion close to the beach, TROLLFEST will be holding meet and greets, signing and photograph sessions, and a series of games and competitions where fans can win prizes, including the “Brumlebassen” carving.  Commenting on the idea to make the carving, TrollBank had this to say: “It was always the intention right from the outset when we first formed TROLLFEST to make it not only a band that played great music, but also a band that had some fun while doing it, and a large part of that is making sure that we involve the fans in the fun.  We’re particularly pleased to have our own pavilion this year, as it’s sometimes hit or miss as to whether fans will actually catch sight of their favourite bands wandering round the festival grounds, but at MetalCamp they will know exactly where to find us and where to go and have a good time.  We’ve found over the years with TROLLFEST that we’ve become especially close to the fans, more so than with any other bands that we play in. They treat us like friends and welcome us wherever we go, often with great generosity when it comes to sharing their drinks, so we try all the time to give something back, and the carving seemed like a particularly personal, and pretty exclusive, way of doing it”.

“Brumlebassen” is due out on NoiseArt Records on the 24th August in both Digipack and Vinyl versions.  The Limited Edition Digipack version comes with bonus download content that includes 100 minutes of videos, screen savers and MP3s as well as a much requested translation of the lyrics which are normally written in the band’s own mix of Norwegian and German.  Artwork is by Swedish cartoonist Jonas Darnell who originally created the iconic metal duck from TROLLFEST’s “Villanden” album, and designer Terje Johnsen.

A new website has just been opened for STROSZEK, the project formed by CLAUDIO ALCARA of FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, one of Italy’s longest serving Italian Black Metal bands.  Unlike his work with FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, which mixes Old School Black Metal with acoustic interludes, STROSZEK is a much more introspective vehicle in which Alcara takes the listener on an intimate journey through his life, replacing the distinctive heavy riffs for which he is maybe better known, with a much more haunting style, that can alternate between heavy riffing and a fragile poignancy which a guitarist of his calibre is able to perform with consummate ease.  As well as Alcara himself, STROSZEK features fellow FROSTMOON ECLIPSE members Davide on bass and Richard on drums.

Self-styled True Norwegian Balkan Metallers TROLLFEST have today released a music video for a track from their forthcoming album “Brumlebassen” which is set for release on NoiseArt Records on August 24 of this year in both limited edition digipack format and gatefold vinyl.  The video for the track “TrinkenTroll” is by TROLLFEST’s Manskow with photography by Oddbjørn Hofseth and can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VRw58QeGr8 as well as below.

According to the band the video “was filmed at the Unholy Metal Pub in Oslo and we invited various people – friends, friends of friends – but word got around that we were going to be filming a music video and people just turned up to take part. Everyone really started getting into the swing of things with the entire shoot turning into one big party and inevitably a lot of good natured drunkenness ensued so what you see in the video is not “acting” at all, hehe!”

TROLLFEST’s upcoming live appearances include Foschfest in Italy on the 29th July, Metalcamp in Slovenia from the 5th to the 11th August where the band will not only perform the entire new album on the Main Stage on the 10th, but will also perform an acoustic set on the beach as well as having their own Pavilion where they will host meet and greets, signing sessions, free give aways, competitions and general TROLLFEST style fun during the festival and where fans will be able to get their hands on the new album before its official release date.  Later in the year TROLLFEST will join KORPIKLAANI and WINTERSUN, amongst others, on the Heidenfest tour.

Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have released a music video for a track that is due to appear on their upcoming fourth full-length album.  The video for the track “I Blaek Og Blod”, which translated means “In Ink and Blood” was filmed in Hammerknuden and amongst the evocative ruins of Hammershus on the island of Bornholm, where the band originates and where it’s founder Hugin lives.  Appearing in the video are band members Satinae Ma and Pestilens along with Hugin himself, who also filmed the video and edited and produced it in the band’s HammerArt and Studios.  The track itself features Huginon Vocals, Guitar and Bass, Pestilens on Lead Guitar, Satinae Ma on Female Vocals and Ynleborgaz on Session Drums.  The “I Blaek Og Blod” video can be seen here or on BLODARV’s official YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/huginofblodarv

Although 1999 may be the date when the very first demo, “Murder in the Name of Satan” appeared, it’s difficult to actually set an exact date for the birth of BLODARV, which was originally formed as a solo project by Hugin.  It would be more accurate to say that BLODARV is the culmination of a period of musical development that Hugin underwent whilst playing in bands such as SKJOLD, ARANTRUTH and ESSOUPI.  Over the years since then BLODARV has become a fully fledged recording and live band, but it still remains the physical incarnation of Hugin’s imagination.  BLODARV represents his deepest thoughts and emotions, bringing them to life through his music, but also through his poetry which becomes the band’s lyrics.  Like the storytellers of old he leads the listener on a disturbing journey through a dark, evil, demonic world, peopled by lost souls, witches and demons.

Commenting on the “I Blaek Og Blod” video and the upcoming album, which will be titled “Gâst” and is set for release towards the end of 2012 on Selfmutilation Services, Hugin had this to say: “As always with BLODARV we have used both Danish and English lyrics on the album, and on this particular track the lyrics happen to be in Danish.  “Gâst” itself contains material that is a lot darker than perhaps you would expect when you listen to “I Blaek Og Blod”, so the track is definitely not representative of the entire album itself.  Metaphorical speaking, it’s just a chapter extracted from a complete book”.

BLODARV’s next live appearance will be at the Club Sick in Odense, Denmark on the 15th September supporting IMPALED NAZARENE.   More information about BLODARV can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/blodarvofficial

Fourteen years after it was first released, the original debut single from Sweden’s SHINING has been made available as a limited edition 7” picture disc by Temple of Darkness Records.  “Submit to Self-Destruction” was originally recorded at the Necromorbius Studios and released on Selbstmord Services in 1998, and proved to be a taste of things to come from Niklas Kvarforth and SHINING.   The picture disc, which features both the original tracks, “Endless Solitude” and “Submit to Self-Destruction”, is limited to 1,000 copies and the artwork is by WATAIN’s Erik Danielsson.  More information about “Submit to Self-Destruction” can  found at http://www.shininglegions.com/

During SHINING’s recent appearance at Hellfest the band was interviewed by Portugal’s Riff webzine, and the interview can be seen below or found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3Rvt62nrUI

SHINING recently released a four-track EP of cover songs entitled “Lots of Girls Gonna Get Hurt” with songs from KATATONIA, KENT, IMPERIET and POETS OF THE FALL, which was recorded while the band was in the studio working on their upcoming eighth full-length album.  According to the band the four tracks were simply songs that SHINING members themselves enjoy listening to and are in no way representative of the new, as yet untitled, album which is due for release on Spinefarm Records later this year.    More information about SHINING can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/shiningofficial

Norwegian Black Metallers RAGNAROK have released a new video for the title track from their last album “Collectors of the King”.  The video is produced by William Brovold, directed by Stefan E Pedersen and the cinematography is by Lasse Roed. Drummer and RAGNAROK founder Jontho had this to say about the video: “It’s the first official video we’ve done for the band, and for a band that’s been around as long as we have, you could say it’s been a long time in coming.  It’s a very dark piece in every sense of the word and perfectly conveys the atmosphere and subject matter of the track itself.  We’re very pleased with the result, and now we’ve got a taste for it, it certainly won’t be the last video we make and you can rest assured that the new album will provide plenty of material for the next one.  The “Collectors of the King” video can be seen below or at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRzjdYqRzKY

Formed in 1994 by drummer Jontho and then-bassist Jerv, RAGNAROK’s current lineup includes Jontho on drums, Hans Fyrst on vocals, DezeptiCunt on Bass and Bolverk on guitars.  The band recently inked a deal with Agonia Records and entered the Endarker Studios in Sweden on the 24th June to record what will be their seventh full-length album.  At the production helm is studio owner and MARDUK bassist Devo. So far all the drum and guitar tracks have been recorded for the as yet untitled album which is due for release later this year.

The band’s next live appearance will be in August at this year’s Pary.San Open Air Festival in Schlotheim, Germany.  More information about RAGNAROK can be found on the band’s website at  http://www.ragnarokhorde.com

KRAKOW have debuted two tracks from the band’s upcoming album “diin” which is set for release on DARK ESSENCE RECORDS in September of this year.  “diin”  will be KRAKOW’s sophomore album, and a follow up to their 2009 debut “Monolith”.  The debut tracks, “Hymn to the Winds” and “Future Past” can be heard on the band’s SoundCloud page at  http://soundcloud.com/krakow_band

As well as well as having debuted the tracks, KRAKOW have also revealed the cover art for “diin”, which has been designed by one of America’s foremost tattoo artist THOMAS HOOPER.  Brooklyn-based HOOPER, who, as well as being a tattooist is also well known for his paintings and designs, has previously worked with bands such as DOOMRIDERS, TOMB, SCOTT KELLY and OLD MAN GLOOM.   According to KRAKOW guitarist and vocalist René Misje the chance to work with HOOPER is something the band relishes: “We are proud to have had such a talented and renowned artist to create the artwork for our new album. We are big admirers of his work and we were honoured when he agreed to work with us. We are eternally grateful and can only hope that our music does justice to his art”.  Information about THOMAS HOOPER and examples of his work can be found at http://meditationsinatrament.com/

Formed in 2005 by Frode Kilvik (bass, vocals), Kjartan Grønhaug (guitar) and René Misje (guitar, vocals), the band recently added KAMPFAR and MONDVOLLAND drummer Ask Ty Arctander to their line up.  With a sound that ranges from dark, evocative and mesmerizing to fast, aggressive and heavy, KRAKOW is a band that is not easily categorised, fitting as it does equally well within the post-rock, metal and stoner rock genres.  More information about KRAKOW can be found at http://www.krakowofficial.com/

In a statement issued today, Austrian Black Metallers HELLSAW announced their intention to take an indefinite break from their activities.  All scheduled tours and appearances during 20012/13 have been cancelled.  Citing “personal reasons” for the decision frontman and founder Aries had this to say: “We may be back, or we may be back as something entirely different, but whatever happens in the future we would just like to thank all the fans who have shown us such phenomenal support and all the people who have worked with us to make HELLSAW what it is today”

Formed in 2002 by Aries, and then-drummer Svart, HELLSAW’s current lineup includes Aries on vocals, Malthus and Isiul on Guitars, Desderoth on Bass and Neuroticon on Drums. With five full-length albums under their belt, HELLSAW are one of the leading Black Metal bands to emerge from Austria in recent years.  The band’s use of instantly recognizable melodies which stay firmly in your memory, coupled with a respect and understanding of what it really takes to make a good Black Metal band created a sound that was unmistakably HELLSAW and culminated in the release of their fifth album “Trist” earlier this year on Napalm records.  More information about HELLSAW can be found at http://www.hellsaw.com

Below you can see the official video of HELLSAW performing the track “The Black Death” from the “Cold” album live at Party.San:
