Norway’s ATROX, whose sixth full-length album “Monocle” was released on Dark Essence Records last year, have announced that they will be adding guitarist Steffen Berg to their lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass,  and Andreas Kjøl Berg on drums.

Although this won’t be his first appearance on stage with ATROX, Berg, who has played in bands such as TALRUSHA, CHILLTON JAMES, AFROCADABRA, 1001 and CP&TSTO (CONOR PATRICK & THE SHOOTING TSAR ORCHESTRA) will make his first appearance as an official member of the lineup on ATROX’s following three dates in Portugal, whilst Alessandro Elide will fill in for Andreas on drums:

30 Nov: Side B Rocks, Alquener
01 Dec: Stereigun, Leiria
02 Dec: Metalpoint, Porto

In a statement from the band, guitarist Eivind explained the thinking behind the addition of  a new guitarist:

Since the complete band/line-up is located in 2 different locations (Rune S lives in Sweden and the rest of us in Trondheim, Norway),  there have been several occasions when we have found ourselves in dire need of a live (session) guitarist.  Last year, for instance,  we needed  a stand-in for Rune for our gig at ProgPower Europe, and we asked Steffen if he could step in – which he did, and he did a great job.   And, as some of us had worked with Steffen before on other musical projects, and  knowing what a great guitar player he is, the connection was already there.

We are also cognisant of  the fact that future ATROX gigs will most likely happen without Rune S, so we felt that now is the right time to including another member into the band.  We asked Steffen if he was interested in becoming a fulltime member, not only to play live, but also to join the creative side of ATROX, and, luckily for us, he said yes.

Steffen himself added:

I actually already knew most of the guys,  and when Rune F. asked me if I’d like to fill in as a live guitarist at Prog Power last year I knew it would be a lot of fun.  To my ears ATROX’s music has always sounded quite different from all the other bands around, and I really do believe they have developed something unique,  which I find very interesting.  It will be a blast writing and touring with these guys in the future!

With their long-awaited sixth full-length album  “Monocle” having hit the streets on Dark Essence Records last month, Norway’s ATROX have today announced that long-time drummer, Tor Arne Helgesen, has decided to quit the band due to a lack of inspiration and the desire to pursue other interests, and that his place will be taken by Andreas Kjøl Berg.

Both the new and outgoing drummers, and the band have made the following statements for their fans:

Tor Arne:
” After 18 years I have decided to leave ATROX. This of course, is not without thought, but it’s a natural decision because of lack of inspiration on my part and it’s been like this for a while. The gang in ATROX are my brothers so this happens completely without drama.  They had seen the “writing on the wall” and were therefore not very surprised about my decision to call it a day. I’m proud to have been a part of ATROX’s history, a story that has been going on for 30 years! Andreas Kjøl Berg who takes over the drum seat in the band is a monster with sticks and will surely enrich ATROX in the future !! Now I will still be featured on various releases such as MANES, LETHE, amongst others, as a session musician, as well as a newly started project with Eivind (EoP). I wish ATROX all the best in the future and look forward to following the band as a fan! Viva ATROX 🙂 !!”

ATROX’s  guitar player Eivind explains:
“So after nearly 20 years Tor Arne has decided to close the ATROX chapter of his life. Everyone in ATROX wishes him nothing but happiness and success in any and all of his future endeavours.  At the same time we are really excited to announce ATROX’s new drummer, a “drum monster” by the name of Andreas Kjøl Berg. He’s been a friend to some of the ATROX members for years, and he plays for the band 22 amongst others. We’re sure he’s going to be the perfect fit, and considering his musical history and skills, I think he’s going to add a new and cool dimension to the ATROX sound”.

Andreas:
“Some eight years back I attended my first ATROX gig. I was blown away by the band, the musicality and the songs they had. I knew some of the guys from before and they were good guys.  I remember telling Rune F after the gig that if they ever found themselves in a situation where they needed a drummer, just ask. That’s how much I liked them. Then, 8 years later, in June this year, I was asked by Rune F to step in at a gig they had at ProgPower in the Netherlands, and I said yes right away. Then I got to know that Tor Arne quit and the drum throne was up for grabs. I grabbed the opportunity.

“I love the band’s two last albums (Binocular and Monocle) and I learned to love them even more after I got to learn and play the  songs. Tor Arne has written so many cool drum parts which are a joy to play. I try to find a combination between bringing my own style, but also respecting the part he wrote, and how I first  learned the songs. To sum it up, it’s great to have become a part of ATROX and I look forward to new music, gigs, laughs and tours”.

The departure is amicable and the band will continue to support their latest release Monocle with some gigs next year as well as working on new music for a new album.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass , and of course new drummer Andreas Kjøl Berg.

With *Monocle”,  their first album for over a decade set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 8th September, ATROX have today debuted the opening track from the album  in the form of a video by Snorre Hovdal of Dispenser Media.

According to the band,  Hovdal was chosen because of his previous work with two of the band members on their DRONTHEIM project, and he was given the song with the brief that it should be dark. More than satisfied with the result, ATROX felt that ” that’s what happens when small boys play with rocks…witches come in many sizes”.  The video is currently streaming exclusively at the following:

Lords of Metal (Netherlands): http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/nl/streams/view/id/626
Eternal Terror (Norway) https://eternal-terror.com/articles/index.php?id=1829&type=A

Spark Rock Magazine (czech republic) http://www.spark-roc kmagazine.cz/industrialove-atr ox-se-vraci-po-9-letech
Rock Tribune (Belgium), https://www.facebook.com/RockTribune/

About the track itself, the band had this to say: “The reason for us picking “Mass” for a video was due to the energy and structure of the song – which is aggressive and straight to the point.  It also represents the album well, giving you a vibe about what it’s all about; a darker side of us and how we’re observing the world around us”.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass, and with “Monocle” the band is  back stronger than ever.  The sound has been fine-tuned so that what was once an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal has become much more progressive, experimental and industrial.  It is an album that shows a darker side to the band, with more epic and atmospheric elements than before.  Consolidating the unique ATROX sound within the album are catchy and upbeat sections.

Artwork for “Monocle” is by Rune Folgerø and Erik Paulsen.  Tracklisting is as follows:

1. Mass
2. Vacuum
3. Heat
4. Finger
5. Suicide Days
6. For We Are Many
7. Movie
8. Target

Dark Essence Records have today announced details of the upcoming album from one of their latest signings, ATROX.  Set for release on the 8th September, and titled “Monocle”, this will be the sixth full-length studio album from the veteran Norwegians.

With “Monocle”, the first album from the band since 2008’s “Binocular”, ATROX are back stronger than ever, having fine tuned their sound so that what was once an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal has become much more progressive, experimental and industrial.  It is an album that shows a darker side to the band, with more epic and atmospheric elements than before.  Consolidating the unique ATROX sound within the album are catchy and upbeat sections.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass, and they recently had some very interesting things to say about “Monocle”:

“Monocle” is our darkest album so far. During the process of creating and recording it we explored, and were exposed to, our darker selves, and what we encountered during this process almost killed us.  It left us in a dystopian vacuum and all worn out, but with one hell of a piece of music to present to the world.

“Musically speaking “Monocle” contains poisons that’ll blind you, and poisons that’ll open your eyes.

“As William Gibson says in his novel  “Neuromancer“: “The future is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed.”

Norway’s Dark Essence Records have added another string to their rapidly growing bow by inking a deal with Norwegian veterans ATROX, and are set to release the band’s fifth full length album “Monocle” on a date as yet to be announced.

Commenting on joining Dark Essence’s roster, and giving fans an insight into what they should expect from the result of ATROX’s return to the studio after  an eight year break, the band had this to say:

“It’s finally happening, the moment we all have been waiting for, the moment when all the hard work finally pays off… We’re proud to announce that we have joined forces with Dark Essence Records, and together we will release our next album “Monocle”.

As William Gibson says in his novel  “Neuromancer“: “The future is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed.”

Formed in Trondheim, Norway, in  1988 the band was originally called Suffocation, but for obvious reasons the name was changed to ATROX in 1990.  Having spent their first years playing an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal, recording demos and honing their live skills, ATROX’s first release was the 1996 7” “Silence of Echoes”,  which was followed by a further four full length albums and numerous live appearances including several tours and festivals.

Today’s lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass plays what they like to call “Schizo” Metal, which differs from their original sound, being more melodic and with an experimental/avant-garde edge.
