Details of the upcoming debut full-length album from Atmospheric  Black Metallers SELVANS, which is due for release on Avantgarde Music in October, have been revealed.  Titled “Lupercalia”, the album is composed of six tracks, each lasting an average of ten minutes, and the band have released a video teaser which includes exerpts of each of the tracks.  The video can be seen below and on SELVANS’ YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/ESHCLMGrBmA

“Lupercalia” was recorded at  the Faunalia Studios and in Patrizio Tamborriello’s Soluzioni Audio. The  lineup on the album comprises Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and  programming,  and Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.  The  album will be available both as a CD  in A5 format and digitally.  Tracklisting as follows:

1- Matavitatau
2- Versipellis
3- O Clitumne!
4- Hirpi Sorani
5- Scurtchìn
6- N.A.F.H.

The new album continues SELVANS’ idea of combining music, lyrics and aesthetics in such a way as to recreate the folklore of Italy’s ancient peoples.  As a consequence,  the visuals, both in terms of album artwork and live sets, is an important aspect for the band.  For “Lupercalia” SELVANS has once again turned to Diletta of E.B.A. Art,  whose first collaboration occurred on the  band’s five-track EP “Clangores Plenilunio”,  which was released on Avantgarde Music in February of this year.  Diletta’s artwork brings to life the designs of founder and frontman Selvans Haruspex in a much lauded way.

SELVANS will support Niklas Kvarforth’s SHINING on the Italian leg of their tour in November.   Confirmed live dates as follows:

11 Sept: Closer Club, Rome
12 Sept: Sinistro Fest, Lago I Salici
05 Nov: Traffic Club, Rome (with SHINING)
06 Nov: Circolo Colony, Brescia (with SHINING)
07 Nov: Alchemica Music Club, Bologna (with SHINING)

According to the band, fans can expect an announcement regarding the album on the 28th September on Avantgarde Music’s BandCamp page at http://avantgardemusic.bandcamp.com/

On the day that their colleague and close friend Jonny Morelli would have reached his 31st birthday, had he survived a fatal motor bike accident last year, SELVANS have posted a video tribute to the much respected drummer.  Whilst the video uses the track “Lupercale” from SELVANS’ recently released EP “Clangores Plenilunio”, the band is very keen to emphasise that this is not a video for the track itself, but it is rather a “sincere tribute to a friend, to his passion, and to his art”.   The video can be seen below and on SELVANS’  YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/AJDfmpYFa4Q

SELVANS’ core members Selvans Haruspex (on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and programming) and Sethlans Fulguriator (guitars and bass),  explained the ideas and the imagery behind the video, and why it is so representative of Morelli’s spirit:  “Jonny loved nature.  He was always our invaluable  guide when we went  hiking, or out searching  for some breathtakingly spectacular settings for photo sessions.  The study of Ancient Italian Paganism and Folklore was another of his passions, and this was clearly reflected in own work on tattoos and drawings.   This video shows the  beautiful wild landscapes that Jonny loved so much, whilst his words, which were written for the song ‘Lupercale’ itself, were transformed into drawings  by our friend Davide ‘DARTWORKS – drawstroy”  Mancini, who is also the designer who created the SELVANS logo”.

Formed after calling an end to their former band DRAUGR after ten years at the top of the Extreme Folk scene in Italy, Morelli was to be SELVANS’ drummer, vocalist and lyricist until his tragic death just as the band was about to enter the studio to record the “Clangores Plenilunio” EP.  After a period of soul searching it was decided that as a mark of respect for Jonny’s enthusiasm, dedication, and hopes for SELVANS,  the band would complete  and release the EP,  for which he had already done so much work, having written and recorded the drum parts, as well as 90% of the vocals.   “Clangores Plenilunio” appeared on Avantgarde Music in February of this year.

SELVANS are currently working on ther debut full-length album  “Lupercalia”, which will  consist of of five  suites inspired and influenced by ancient Italian history and folklore, and running in total for around an hour.  It will be very much a continuation of what was started with “Clangores Plenilunio”, whose music is filled with the Italic spirit and redolent with its mysticism.  “Lupercalia” is expected to be released on Avantgarde Music in late 2015.

SELVANS next live appearance will be on the 3rd May when they support NECROPHOBIC at the Tipografia in Pescara, Italy.

In a statement issued today Black Folk Metallers SELVANS, whose debut EP was released earlier this month on Avantgarde Music, announced that the band’s  lineup would be reduced to a core of two members following an amicable split with bassist Stolas:   “Stolas is no longer part of SELVANS.  The unavoidable split happened in a friendly manner, as indeed  it should as we have shared many experiences together, both with DRAUGR  and SELVANS  over the years.   We wish him all the best – he is a brother to us and always will be!

“Going forward the SELVANS line-up will consist of two members,  Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals, programming and  Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.  We have a number of shows lined up, starting on the 6 March at the Brixia Obscura Fest, and these will be unaffected as we will be joined by three session members for any live appearances.  We’ll have more important news for you soon.”

SELVANS draws on Italian folklore which, over the centuries, has been enriched by the different ethnic cultures that populated the country, and  which the band recreates through its music, lyrics and stunning visuals.  In fact, the release date of the five-track EP “Clangores Plenilunio” was timed to coincide with the start of the ancient Lupercalia Festival on the 13th February.  The EP is also a tribute to the band’s co-founder and drummer, the late Jonny Morelli,  who died shortly after finishing laying down the drums and part of the vocals.

SELVANS is set embark on a series of live dates in Italy in March in support of the release of “Clangores Plenilunio”:

06 March, Brixia Obscura I Festival, Circolo Colony, Brescia, Italy
07 March, RomaObscura III Festival, Traffic Live Club, Rome, Italy
27 March, Ride ‘n’ Roll, Chieti, Italy
28 March, La Masquerade, Work in Progress, Albignasego, Italy

Fresh from inking a deal with Avantgarde Music, Black-Folk Metallers SELVANS have today revealed details of the bands first release on the label.  Due to hit the streets on the 13th of February, the release will be a five-track EP entitled “Clangores Plenilunio”, which will serve as a tribute to the band’s drummer, the late Jonny Morelli ,who was killed in June of last year shortly after finishing recording the drums and part of the vocals for the EP.   The release date has been specifically chosen as the 13th of February as this date marks the start of the ancient Lupercalia Festival.

As a lead up to the release, SELVANS have posted a video teaser of the title track “Clangores Plenilunio”,  a song that could almost be called a duet as the vocals are handled party by Jonny and partly by Selvans Haruspex, who explains the concept behind the song: “Jonny and I worked closely together  when it came to deciding on the lyrical theme for the song, and we did a lot of research on the Sibyl’s Cave, which, legend has it, is located in the Marche region of central Italy.  The fascination of this place, and the legends associated with it,  was a great inspiration to us and we had planned to use the folklore surrounding it in several SELVANS pieces in the future.   Although Jonny died before he could finish parts of the text, I completed them,  and whilst  “Clangores Plenilunio” is the first piece that features the Appennine Sybil, it definitely won’t be the last”.   The video teaser can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/rZwpCXkO_fI

SELVANS was formed following the demise of DRAUGR, and, through music, lyrics and aesthetics,  the band aims to recreate the mysticism and the folklore that the different ethnic  inhabitants of  Italy throughout the ages left behind them.  The  lineup on “Clangores Plenilunio” includes Selvans Haruspex (Ursus Arctos of DRAUGR)  on vocals,  keyboards and traditional instruments , Sethlans Fulguriator (Mors of DRAUGR) on guitar, and DRAUGR co-founders Stolas on bass and  Jonny Morelli on drums.  Recording took place at both  the Faunalia Studio and and Soluzioni Audio, and included is a cover of “… In the Woods” from the “Heart of Ages” album by Norway’s IN THE WOODS.  Track listing for “Clangores Plenilunio” as follows.

1. Lupercale
2. Clangores Plenilunio
3. Prologue
4. … In the Woods
5. Epilogue

SELVANS recently debuted a digital single edit of “Lupercale”,  a track that will appear on the EP in its full version  which runs to over  9 minutes in length.   “Lupercale”, is available direct from the band at https://selvans.bandcamp.com/track/lupercale-single-edit and can be heard below and on the band’s SoundCloud page at https://soundcloud.com/templeofselvans/lupercale-edit  or on YouTube at http://youtu.be/D8Zghhn-RIw

Dark Essence Records have announced March 16th as the release date for “De gjenlevende”, the new album from Norwegian Black-Folk Metallers GALAR.  The album, which will be the band’s 3rd full-length, was recorded at the Conclave and Earshot Studio in Bergen with producer and VULTURE INDUSTRIES frontman Bjørnar E. Nilsen handling the recording and mixing , whilst the mastering is by ENSLAVED’s Herbrand Larsen.  Artwork for the album is by  Robert Høyem of graphic designers Overhaus.  The track “Tusen kall til solsang ny”  from “De gjenlevende”,  has been debuted today and can be heard above and at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/galar-tusen-kall-til-solsang-ny

Joining the lineup for the album is Phobos (AETERNUS, GRAVDAL, MALSAIN) who was once again drafted in to handle the drums, as well as several session musicians including both a string quintet and a horn quartet –  unusual elements that are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album.  Track listing for  “De gjenlevende”, which is sung entirely in Norwegian, but which is accompanied by an explanatory booklet in English,  as follows:

1. De gjenlevende
2. Natt … og taust et forglemt liv
3. Bøkens hymne
4. Ljós
5. Gjeternes tunge steg
6. Tusen kall til solsang ny

Whilst “De gjenlevende” loses nothing of the epic grandeur that fans have come to expect from the band , this time GALAR  also delve further into their harsher and more extreme sound alongside their trademark symphonic  elements.   As the band’s lyricist Jorge Blutaar recently explained, the concept for “De gjenlevende”  is inspired by  Pan-European folklore, ontology, and elegies.  “Its five contemplative texts tell of the utter dreadfulness that haunts both the human mind and body when the season of winter holds every living thing in its grasp. Winter is the time of utter gloom, enfeeblement and inescapable death, which challenges mankind, beasts and plants equally. Yet, as long as there is life, there is hope, and eventually a new era of the Sun will bring to an end the seemingly eternal darkness of winter.  With the arrival of spring hope and life will flourish once more.  It is a portrayal of this cyclical process of transformation that is as old as the history of mankind itself”.

GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  The first time the new lineup will hit the stage will be at Inferno Festival in Oslo on the 1st of April at the Dark Essence Records label night at Blå, alongside label-mates TAAKE, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM.
