With their debut full-length album “Lupercalia” now in its third repress, and with work progressing on their next studio album,  Atmospheric Black Metallers SELVANS will celebrate the closing of the first chapter of their activity with a special live album  on Avantgarde Music.

Titled “Hirpi”, the five-track album will consist of four tracks that cover all three of SELVANS releases to date, which, aside from “Lupercalia”,  also include the “Clangores Plenilunio” EP, and the 2016 split with DOWNFALL OF NUR.   The other track will be a cover of DRAUGR’s “Furore Pagano” in a tribute to the band whose demise gave birth to SELVANS.

“Hirpi” was recorded in Pescara, Italy, during two separate live performances.  The first recording took place on the 26th April 2016 when SELVANS performed a special memorial concert for their former vocalist and drummer, the late Jonny Morelli, whilst the the second took place later in the year on the 16th December.  The lineup on the album consists of Haruspex on vocals and Fulgiriator on guitars,  together with session musicians Acheron on guitars, Cordyceps M on bass, and HK on drums.  Former DRAUGR members Triumphator and Stolas joined the band on stage on guitars and bass respectively to perform “Furore Pagano”.

The unique “Faun’s Procession” artwork was conceived by Haruspex and brought into being by the Italian artist Umberto D’Ottavio.  Track listing on “Hirpi” is as follows:

1. Lupercale
2. Hirpi Sorani
3. O Clitumne!
4. Furore Pagano (Draugr cover)
5. Pater Surgens

With their fifth full-length album “Winter” set for release on Aural Music/code666  on the 10th March,  and the first track to be debuted having caused a considerable stir amongst press and fans, Atmospheric Black Metallers FEN have posted a video for a second track from the album.

Produced by FEN bassist Grungyn, the video for II (Penance)  is a combination of scenes filmed during the winter in the mysterious and evocative landscapes that make up the Fens of Eastern England, interspersed with both live and rehearsal footage of the band – un-posed and unvarnished. It is, according to FEN, “A document of a band committed to true sincerity of performance, truly channelling the essence of their music“.  It can be seen below and on FEN’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/OenMFgZGE94

x
Frontman, The Watcher, explains that “Whilst accompanying the second track from ‘Winter’, the video does, in many ways, symbolise much of the overarching themes of the album. Specifically, it visually represents the journey and landscapes described throughout much of the album – fenland and moors dusted in wintry hoarfrost, peat bogs misting in the blaze of the winter sun and above all of it, the cathedral drawing ever-nearer. In line with the title of the track, this embodies our Penance – a monolithic totem exuding dread promise and revelation“.

Since the their formation in early 2006 FEN’s trademark sound of Atmospheric Black Metal, which incorporates elements of post-rock,  has seen the band rise on the wave of  a resurgence within the  UK Black Metal scene.  And with “Winter” FEN have produced their most ambitions, and yet most fundamental expression to date.   In fact, it could be said that FEN have returned to the very beginnings of their ideology in order to invoke the atmosphere of bleak reflection and ancient sorrow that envelops the Fens, from whence the band originated, and from where they draw their inspiration.  As The Watcher explained recently commented about the album:

“With ‘Winter’ we wanted to ‘return to the roots’ of the band so to speak but not in the clichéd, nostalgic way many bands do – instead, we wanted this record to represent the ‘essence’ of Fen in terms of tone, atmosphere and above all concept. This album therefore very much describes a journey towards sanctity and redemption across a landscape steeped in mystery, hints of forgotten darkness and sorrows long since drowned in the distant past. It represents the culmination of over 18 months of writing and rehearsing, pushing ourselves harder and harder as musicians – it is a lengthy and self-indulgent record for which we make no apology. Indeed, it is a fitting tribute to mark ten years of the existence of Fen.”

Rich in sound, beguilingly delicate,  and yet laced with darkness,  the six-track “Winter” is a colossal piece of work where atmospheric Black Metal and delicate, spacious cleans,  have been melded with aspects of 70s Progressive Rock, Shoegaze and Doom Metal, making ‘Winter’ an involving and immersive experience.

Produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano at the Orgone Studios in London (ULVER, ALTAR OF PLAGUES, GRAVE MIASMA, PRIMORDIAL, SOLSTAFIR), “Winter”  will be available in Standard CD, Double Black Vinyl limited to 300 copies, and Digital formats.  In addition there will also be available a Special Collectors Box limited to 199 copies which will include the standard CD, an additional bonus CD, the DLP with Side A/Side B in a smashed splatter effect of transparent aquamarine and opaque cream, an exclusive T-shirt and poster, and a certificate of authenticity signed by the band.   On the strength of the first track debuted, the Collectors Box is on the verge of selling out well ahead of its release date.

With artwork by Grungyn, tracklisting for “Winter” is as follows:

I (Pathway)
II (Penance)
III (Fear)
IV (Interment)
V (Death)
VI (Sight)

Bonus (available on all the Limited formats):

I The Keening Soils
II Sight (Reprise)
III Penumbral Whispers
IV Temples Beyond the Shoreline

TAAKE

With over two decades of experience, both in the studio and on the stage, TAAKE, or more precisely,  the band’s formidable founder and frontman Hoest, has acquired almost legendary status.  Never abandoning the origins of Norwegian Black Metal, Hoest still manages to innovate and surprise fans the world-over, and, in a long-lasting collaboration with Dark Essence Records, consistently produces albums that are considered to be classics in their genre.

Hoest’s powerful persona and mesmerising stage presence makes TAAKE much sought after on the live circuit, with 2017 already gearing up to be as busy as the previous year.   As well as the four UK dates have already been confirmed for various festival appearances over the coming year.

DE PROFUNDIS

DE PROFUNDIS started life in 2005 playing a haunting blend of Doom and Death metal, but, by 2010, whilst still retaining the sombre, melodic atmosphere the band’s sound became much more progressive in nature.  Now, after  years of honing their art, the sound of DE PROFUNDIS has been streamlined into concise, technical cacophonies that fuse ferocious Blackened Death metal with ethereal progressive overtones.  DE PROFUNDIS’ extensive stage experience guarantees that this tour will be one too good to miss.

Atmospheric Black Metallers FEN have announced details of their fifth full-length album  which is set to be released on Code666 on the 17th March.  Titled “Winter”, and produced by of Jaime Gomez Arellano at the Orgone Studios in London (ULVER, ALTAR OF PLAGUES, GRAVE MIASMA, PRIMORDIAL, SOLSTAFIR), the six-track album promises to be  a colossal piece of work for the English three-piece,  at once rich in sound, beguilingly delicate,  and yet laced with darkness.

Consisting of six songs that are thematically and compositionally linked, each piece on “Winter” flows into the next, and, ideally,  the whole record is intended to be listened to in one sitting to allow the full journey to be absorbed. Musically, the band have sought to push themselves further than ever before and Fen’s trademark use of atmospheric Black Metal and delicate, spacious cleans,  has been married with aspects of 70s progressive rock, shoegaze and doom metal, with the intention of rendering ‘Winter’ as involving and as immersive a listen as possible.

“Winter”  will be available in Standard CD, Double Black Vinyl limited to 300 copies, and Digital formats. With artwork by Grungyn, tracklisting for “Winter” is as follows

It is an album in which,  conceptually, FEN have returned to the roots of their ideology, seeking to embrace and distil all that inspired them when they first set out on this path over a decade ago – that is, to invoke the ambience of bleak reflection and ancient sorrow that permeates the mysterious landscapes of the fens of Eastern England.  Frontman The Watcher has summarised the album thus:

“The scene is set. Cold. Empty. Desolate. A figure stares solemnly across a patchwork landscape of peat fields, the thin wisps of leaf-stripped trees swaying mournfully in the icy winds that bite through to a man’s very marrow. The sun’s light bleeds in sickly trails from the enveloping greyness of the skies that seem to yawn like an endless, oppressive canyon above. Compelled by this vision of unyielding bleakness, the figure moves, drawn inexorably to… something. Solace, penance, closure or oblivion, the pull is irresistible, a palpable sense of finality blossoming exponentially. And with each leaden footfall, the freezing breath of winter calls louder… louder… louder”.

Selvans MMXVPR

Split releases amongst bands are two-a-penny these days, which is why the new album from two much-talked about new Atmospheric Black Metal bands,  SELVANS and DOWNFALL OF NUR, promises to be something quite different, with the two bands deciding they did not just want to take part in a split release, but wanted it to br a true collaboration in every sense of the word.

Instead  of just producing  their individual recordings in a state of total disconnect, with the bands concerned having only the most basic contact, and often  none at all, as is frequently the norm for split releases, Italy’s SELVANS and Argentina’s DOWNFALL OF NUR, have not only worked together on the overall concept of the album, which simply bears the name of the two bands, they also perform on each others compositions.

The album, which will be released on Avantgarde Music on the 7th November,  takes as its theme that very epitome of the perfect opposites – the Sun and the Moon – and the dualistic nature they represent.  It is a theme  that has been much represented by artists over the ages, and is a favourite topic of conversation of both  scholars and mystics.  According to Avantgarde Music, the album is an opus in four acts, in which SELVANS and DOWNFALL OF NUR give their own interpretation of the theme, each bringing their own indivdual thoughts and sounds, and melding them into a cohesive whole.

Written by SELVANS’ Luca Del Re and DOWNFALL OF NUR’s Antonio Sanna, and with artwork by the Argentinian artist Santiago Caruso, tracklisting for the album is as follows:

I. Intro/ SOL
II. Selvans – Pater Surgens
III. Downfall of Nur – Mater Universi
IV. Outro/ LUNA

SELVANS,  whose lineup comprises Selvans Haruspex on  keyboards, traditional instruments, screams and clean vocals, programming and Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars, bass, clean vocals, was formed from the ashes of DRAUGR, and is a band noted for its ability to combine music, lyrics and aesthetics in such a way as to recreate the folklore of Italy’s ancient peoples.

Instantly snapped up by Avantgarde Music, the  band’s first release was the “Clangores Plenilunio” EP, which also marked the final recorded appearance of co-founder Jonny Morelli, who was tragically killed in a motor bike accident.  The EP was followed by the full-length album “Lupercalia”, which more than fulfilled the faith Avantgarde placed in it.  So much so, in fact, that it is now on its 3rd reprint and is being made available in a different format, this time as a jewel case CD with the addition of the live version of the track ‘Lupercale’.

SELVANS are set to join KAMPFAR when the iconic Norwegian Black Metallers play a series of dates in Italy in November.

Upcoming shows  as follows:

14 Oct:  Rites of the Black Mass, Fabrica, Bucharest, Romania
15 Oct:  Autumn Souls of Sofia, Live & Loud, Sofia, Bulgaria

On Tour in Italy with KAMPFAR

10 Nov:  Traffic Live Club,  Rome

SELVANS,  a band known for combining music, lyrics and aesthetics in such a way as to recreate the folklore of Italy’s ancient peoples, released their debut full-length album “Lupercalia” on Avantgarde Music in October of this year.  Recorded at  the Faunalia Studios and in Patrizio Tamborriello’s Soluzioni Audio, the album’s lineup  comprises Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and  programming,  and Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.

Details of the upcoming debut full-length album from Atmospheric  Black Metallers SELVANS, which is due for release on Avantgarde Music in October, have been revealed.  Titled “Lupercalia”, the album is composed of six tracks, each lasting an average of ten minutes, and the band have released a video teaser which includes exerpts of each of the tracks.  The video can be seen below and on SELVANS’ YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/ESHCLMGrBmA

“Lupercalia” was recorded at  the Faunalia Studios and in Patrizio Tamborriello’s Soluzioni Audio. The  lineup on the album comprises Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and  programming,  and Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.  The  album will be available both as a CD  in A5 format and digitally.  Tracklisting as follows:

The new album continues SELVANS’ idea of combining music, lyrics and aesthetics in such a way as to recreate the folklore of Italy’s ancient peoples.  As a consequence,  the visuals, both in terms of album artwork and live sets, is an important aspect for the band.  For “Lupercalia” SELVANS has once again turned to Diletta of E.B.A. Art,  whose first collaboration occurred on the  band’s five-track EP “Clangores Plenilunio”,  which was released on Avantgarde Music in February of this year.  Diletta’s artwork brings to life the designs of founder and frontman Selvans Haruspex in a much lauded way.

SELVANS will support Niklas Kvarforth’s SHINING on the Italian leg of their tour in November.   Confirmed live dates as follows:

11 Sept: Closer Club, Rome
12 Sept: Sinistro Fest, Lago I Salici
05 Nov: Traffic Club, Rome (with SHINING)
