DARK ESSENCE RECORDS SET TO RELEASE CD VERSION OF TAAKE TRACKS FROM RECENT 10″ SPLIT SERIES

Over the past months, Norwegian Black Metal icons TAAKE have released a series of 10″ splits with three different bands (WHOREDOM RIFE, DEATHCULT and HELHEIM), on three different labels, and, as always happens in the case of vinyl releases, fans have been asking for a CD version. 

And Dark Essence Records are happy, as always, to oblige. So,  on the 2nd July, they will be releasing a limited edition Digipak CD, along with a Digital version, of the six TAAKE tracks from the series, which will include a very special acoustic version of “Nattestid ser Porten vid I”, acknowledged by Black Metal fans the world-over as not only a classic TAAKE track, but a classic of the whole genre itself.

The release is titled “Avvik”, which translated means “anomaly” or “deviation”, which makes it a very appropriate title given that the tracks from the splits would never really fit into any of TAAKE’s own releases.   You could, of course,  also argue that TAAKE mastermind Hoest has always ploughed a very  individual  furrow with his Helnorsk Svartmetall sound, standing outside the mainstream of Black Metal, and therefore making the choice of title doubly apt. 

All the tracks of “Avvik” have been recorded and re-mixed by VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ Bjørnar E. Nilsen, and re-mastered for digital release by Herbrand Larsen at their Conclave & Earshot Studio in Bergen.

Some  of the re-mixes have some very surprising guests, who do not appear on the originals and are exclusive to this release. These include Dr Mikannibal of SIGH who did TAAKE the honour of adding her saxophone to a slightly longer version of the Sisters of Mercy cover “Heartland”.  Whilst TAAKE’s live guitarist (and banjo legend) Gjermund created the acoustic version “Nattestid ser Porten vid I”.

If there is one thing that Hoest, the iconic leader and frontman of Norwegian Black Metallers TAAKE,  has demonstrated with his trademark Helnorsk Svartmetall  sound  over the band’s twenty five year career, it is that it is possible for the genre not only to survive, but also to thrive and re-generate itself into something fresh and relevant, whilst losing none of its traditional feel.

And alongside TAAKE for many years now has been the Dark Essence Records label, based, like the band itself, in Bergen, and well known not only for its roster of long-established and extremely successful exponents of Black and Extreme Metal, but also for its unerring ability to sniff out the best of the new generation of bands coming up today.

Now, this hugely successful partnership between label and band has come up with a collaboration that will see the release of “7 Fjell”.  This career-spanning, limited edition box set will be a one-time only issue of 1,000 copies, and will contain seven picture discs that comprise all of TAAKE’s full-length albums to date. Each individual disc of seven tracks each (no bonus tracks), will come in a die-cut sleeve, and also included in the box will be  a TAAKE slip mat for your record player!   Of the seven albums, the last four have never before been released as picture discs.

“7 Fjell”, which translated  means the “7 Mountains”,  is a reference to both the seven mountains that surround Bergen, as well as the seven albums themselves.  With artwork by HELHEIM’s H’grimnir, based on a photo by Peter Beste, the picture discs are as follows:

Taake US Tour PR1

You could never mistake “Kong Vinter” for anyone’s work other than that of founder and frontman Hoest,  whose body of work,  which spans over two decades, coupled with his magnetic stage presence, has made  him into an icon for Black Metal fans the world-over.  As is usual with TAAKE,  there has been a three year break between albums,  and, once again playing all the instruments himself, Hoest has produced  an album which, whilst losing none of the atmosphere that makes TAAKE so recognizable, still manages to surprise with its underlying nasty groove that can, at times, have an almost devilish playfulness about it. It is deceptively familiar to the ear, yet it is unpredictable. It is progressive, and yet straight  forward.  And of course there are always some elements of  rock’n’roll, the Devil’s music itself.

Set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 24th November, “Kong Vinter” was recorded and produced by Bjornar Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES) at his Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen.  With a running time of 55 minutes and with photography by Christopher Zibell and artwork by Tom Korsvold of Coverart,  track listing is as follows:

Dark Essence Records label-mates HELHEIM, whose vocalist/bassist V’gandr also happens to play in TAAKE, has been acknowledged for over two decades as a Norse Black Metal band in the truest sense, eschewing the “comic book” aspects that plague so many of the bands claiming to belong in that genre.  Through their music and lyrics HELHEIM explore the darker aspects of the North-European pre-Christian culture, and bring a modern interpretation that captures the spirit of the Norse heritage in ways that have eluded both to researchers and archaeologists.  The band’s ninth full-length album “landawarijaR” was released at the beginning of the year, once again to considerable critical acclaim.

With their signature Helnorsk Svartmetall sound, TAAKE have always stayed true to their Black Metal roots , but the band’s iconic founder and frontman, Hoest, has  refused to allow himself to get bogged down in the formulaic writing that plagues so many bands in the genre today – bands both old and new.  His approach has always been one of trying something new, and original, even if it’s something totally unexpected, and it is this that has kept TAAKE at the top of their game for over two decades.

With his formidable stage presence, Hoest has acquired a quasi-legendary status amongst fans, and the band’s return to the US will hopefully give more of TAAKE’s followers a chance to see one of Norway’s most admired and influential Black Metal bands.

Aside from the US tour, TAAKE will play four dates in the UK in April, and has  already been confirmed for various festival appearances over the coming year.

With their appearance in London at the end of last year having sold out almost immediately, Norwegian Black Metallers TAAKE have announced that they will return to the UK to play the following four dates in April alongside UK favourites FEN and DE PROFUNDIS.  Due to other upcoming commitments FEN are unable to do the London show and will be replaced by WINTERFYLLETH

TAAKE

With over two decades of experience, both in the studio and on the stage, TAAKE, or more precisely,  the band’s formidable founder and frontman Hoest, has acquired almost legendary status.  Never abandoning the origins of Norwegian Black Metal, Hoest still manages to innovate and surprise fans the world-over, and, in a long-lasting collaboration with Dark Essence Records, consistently produces albums that are considered to be classics in their genre.

FEN

Formed in early 2006 with the goal of producing Atmospheric Black Metal that incorporates elements of post-rock,  FEN have, since then, found themselves at the vanguard of a resurgent UK Black Metal scene.  With an EP, four full length albums, several splits and compilations, two European tours and numerous appearances at prestigious festivals under their belts, FEN’s fifth full-length album “Winter”, which is set for release on Aural Music on the 17th March,  is  the band’s most ambitious, and yet most fundamental expression, yet.   FEN recently debuted a track from the album, on the strength of which two limited edition versions of “Winter” are already close to being sold out more than a month before release date.  The track “I (Pathway)” can be heard below and at https://fenuk.bandcamp.com/album/winter

With their third full-length album “Det Nya Svarta” set for release on the 7th April on Indie Recordings,  Sweden’s ALFAHANNE have revealed a track from the album.  Titled “Stigmata”, the band explained  that the track “is about our home town. How you are born full of hope for the future, but the raw climate destroys you and the town drags you down”.

Once you dig deeper into them you find many truths as I see them.  Alfahanne will never lean to the left or to the right or write about political issues. The only political issue that is close to our hearts is equal rights but the flipside of that same coin is that we think everyone is equally…. Equally useless.”

Sweden’s self-styled “Alfapokalyptic Rockers” ALFAHANNE have inked a deal with Indie Recordings, who are set to release the band’s third full-length album “Det Nya Svarta” on the 7th April.

Hailing from Eskilstuna, ALFAHANNE burst onto the scene in 2010 with the avowed intent to bring back a sense of danger to Rock n Roll.  Playing what the band calls “Alfapocalyptic Rock”, which mixes Black Metal with Classic Rock and Punk, and good old Rock n Roll, ALFAHANNE have created their own style of music, full of the kind of swagger and attitude that earns them plaudits from critics and fans alike.

Add to this the fact that ALFAHANNE were, right from the word go, able to attract high calibre guests such as  as TAAKE’s Hoest, SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth, HELHEIM’s V’gandr,  KVELERTAK frontman Erlend Hjelvik, Spellgoth from HORNA and TURMION KÄTILÖT, and Nattfursth from SORHIN, not just on their first two albums, but also live on stage, and have continued this enviable the tradition with “Det Nya Svarta” , and you know you have something pretty special.
