Norwegian Thrashers DEAD TROOPER have released a live album with a bit of a difference.  The eight track album, “No Tan En Vivo En Mexico”, with artwork by Danny Larsen, is released digitally on the 9th March, and is inspired by the band’s appearance at Mexico’s Wild Metal Fest last year which was rained off after only one and a half songs into the set.  As a result the band decided to release a live studio recording of what would have been the entire show as a tribute to the fans who took Dead Trooper to their hearts after they performed an impromptu set at a local biker bar following the cancellation of the festival.  Frontman Meister Muller describes what happened:

“To cut a long story short DEAD TROOPER went to Mexico last year to play their biggest outdoor concert to date at the Wild Metal Fest 2011. We hit the stage and what did we get?  Rain.  Insane amounts of it which drowned the stage and cut the power. So much rehearsing and anticipation for this gig and we only got to play 1.5 songs before Mother Nature pissed on us. We don’t need to tell you how passionate Mexican fans are about their metal and with the festival called off there ensued the usual riot, fire, fists and shit kickers.  After quite a few depressing cervesas and tequilas we got word that a bunch of disgruntled fans thirsty for Norwegian Metal were gathered at a local biker bar, together with a local band and back line, so we headed off to the Route 666 bar and shredded through some songs, including a bunch of covers, together with eminent guests! The bar exploded! We were welcomed as stars! Unbelievable! The intensity, heat and adrenaline of the packed club was only matched by the rain of bear hugs, kisses, praise and love from the crazy metal heads of Cancun  when we eventually stumbled off stage.   Before we were due to appear we had made this brilliant studio recording of our intended live set which really captured our live sound in the best way possible and which was only meant for us to dissect and analyze for the sake of perfecting the set. But we had to give something back to Mexico for treating us like metal royalty! “No Tan En Vivo En Mexico” is the set we intended to play at Wild Metal Fest, and here it is, raw, dirty, heavy, and passionate! This album is for you, Mexico! Te amamos, you bastards!!”

DEAD TROOPER, who describe their music as “groovy, aggressive thrash metal” are currently on the hunt for a label to release what will be their sophomore full-length album, which features guest appearances by some of Norway’s extreme metal elite.  The band’s next live appearance will be at the Inferno Festival in Oslo on the 6th April.  More information about DEAD TROOOPER can be found at http://www.deadtrooper.com/

”Kiss of the Kannibal”, a track from “No Tan En Vivo En Mexico”, together with other tracks from DEAD TROOPER  can be heard on the SoundCloud player at the top of the page.

Below you can hear Meister Muller explaining the decision to release “No Tan En Vivo En Mexico”, during a recent interview with DJ Malice for Canada’s Nuclear Holocaust Radio.

PANTHEON I have completed recording two tracks to show both fans and prospective labels the direction the Norwegian Extreme Metallers are taking with their music and what to expect from their fourth full length album.   Whilst there are no definitive plans at the moment to release the two tracks, titled “Pariah” and “Martyr”,  according to frontman Andre’ Kvebek the band  “wouldn’t be averse to releasing  it on vinyl as a special should any labels be interested”.

Having recently expanded their line up to include former ABSU guitarist Aethyris McKay, Kvebek explains the thinking behind the rather unusual decision to record two separate tracks first, rather than a full album and just release teasers:  “We did actually have virtually a full album in a pre-production stage, but these were all tracks that pre-dated Aethyris joining the band, and were not really structured to take into account his contribution on clean vocals.  After working on them for a while, we realised that most of them wouldn’t work they way we wanted them to work.  Additionally of course we had his considerable song-writing skills and approach to Extreme Metal to draw on, so we decided to start again from scratch.  As far as we’re concerned it was the right decision to take because we can now turn what would have been simply a “transitional” album into a fully fledged PANTHEON I anno 2012 album, which is much more fierce and much more mature than before.

Whilst Kvebek (ex 1349) still continues to write and play the guitar on recordings, the arrival of McKay has enabled him to concentrate solely on vocals when performing live, something he has been wanting for some time as it allows both himself, and the band, more flexibility on stage.  Other members of the band include Sagstad (TROLLFEST, SARKOM, METAL MILITIA) on guitars, Live Julianne Costol on cello, TRS (1349, TYRANN) on bass and Mads G (THE ALLSEEING I) on drums.  More information about PANTHEON I can be found on the band’s website at http://www.pantheon-i.com

Canada’s Hypnotic Dirge Records have released the following video for “Can’t Make Things Undone” a track from the upcoming STROSZEK album “Sound Graveyard Bound” which is scheduled for release on the 10th March.

The nine-track “Sound Graveyard Bound” will be the third full-length album from STROSZEK, the project formed by Claudio Alcara of FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, one of Italy’s longest serving Italian Black Metal bands.  Unlike his work with FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, which mixes Old School Black Metal with acoustic interludes, STROSZEK is a much more introspective vehicle in which Alcara takes the listener on an intimate journey through his life, replacing the distinctive heavy riffs for which he is maybe better known, with a much more haunting style, which a guitarist of his calibre is able to do with consummate ease.   As well as Alcara himself, STROSZEK features fellow FROSTMOON ECLIPSE members Davide on bass and Richard on drums.  “Sound Graveyard Bound” also features a cover version of MIKE JOHNSON’s “If The World Hadn’t Gone Insane”

Commenting recently on the new album Alcara said “With the first release I tended to keep my vocals very far back in the mix.  As a guitarist I wasn’t used to being the centre of attention, and my vocal style is certainly not that of a “screamer”, on the contrary, I’m rather laid back, but after three albums I’m confident that my vocal style suits the music, so I’m not too worried about hiding behind the instruments this time”.  More information about STROSZEK can be found on the band’s MySpace page at  http://www.myspace.com/songsofremorse

In a statement issued by the band today, Norwegian Blackened Metallers BYFROST have announced that they have parted ways with “Alkolust”, their drummer since 2008.  Frontman Heavyharms commented:  “We have had a great time playing with Alkolust over the years and we wish him the best with his other projects.  And to all our fans out there, this is not the end, but very much a new beginning.  Horns to the Sky!”

Formed in Bergen, the heartland of Norwegian extreme metal, in 2007 by Heavy Harms and Ripmeister, BYFROST released their debut album “Black Earth” on Painkiller records in early 2010, and, on the strength of this release, were quickly picked up by Germany’s AFM records. The band’s second full-length album, “Of Death”, which was once again produced by ENSLAVED’s Herbrand Larsen, who also guested on the album, was released in June 2011 to much critical acclaim.

BYFROST, whose trademark dark, heavy riffs, with a menacing touch of iciness, make it almost impossible to listen to the band without wanting to bang your head, will use session drummers both for live performances and recording going forward, and do not anticipate any break in activity.  More information about BYFROST can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/BYFROST

When MONDVOLLAND’s debut full-length album “d’Olde Roop” was released in 2010, the Dutch band had its feet firmly planted in the Blackened Folk Metal field, both in terms of their sound as well as in a lyrical content that drew on ancient myths and traditions of the Eastern Netherlands. Now, with the release of their new EP “Pestvogel”, MONDVOLLAND has taken a slightly different road.  The subject matter still draws on the folklore – two of the three tracks on the EP are inspired by local folk tales, whilst the “Pestvogel”, or “Plague Bird” of the title track is the embodiment of the plague which decimated so much of Europe in centuries past. But with this release the band’s sound is much more oriented towards blending the traditional black metal vocals with clean vocals, giving “Pestvogel” and MONDVOLLAND a unique sound.  “Pestvogel” is released on the 28th of January 2012 and is available for free download in MP3 format from the band’s website at http://www.mondvolland.com

MONDVOLLAND was formed in 2005 by Martijn on guitars and vocals and Mickeal (HEIDEVOLK session member) on bass and vocals, with the intention of breathing new life into the Pagan/Folk Metal scene that had become somewhat staid and lacking in originality. In Dutch “Mond vol land” literally means “mouth full of earth” and stems from a local folk story in which giants created the hills and forests of Montferland, the birthplace of the band’s founders, and it was these old legends that originally inspired the duo, and continue to do so. MONDVOLLAND’s current line up includes Harold on guitar and KAMPFAR drummer Ask. Frontman  Martijn had this to say about the thinking behind the release of the new EP:  “We are now a solid, four piece unit, and we are very satisfied with the direction the band is taking.  We still retain our “folk” essence, but I would say that our sound is much “blacker” than it was before.  Our decision to release the “Pestvogel” EP as a free download is really based on giving our old fans a chance to get a feel for the new direction, and hopefully gain some new followers along the way”.

MONDVOLLAND is due to play at HEIDEVOLK’s release party on the 25th of February 2012 at Luxor in Arnhem, and more information about the band can be found at http://www.mondvolland.com

It’s been ten years since Black Metallers FOSCOR released their debut album, and 2012 will see the band celebrating the decade with a series of events starting off with a show at the Sala KGB in Barcelona on the 28th January, where the band will also launch a new commemorative merchandise and the release of their first ever DVD. Titled “Deu Anys Vers La Foscor” which translated from the band’s native Catalan means “Ten Years Towards Darkness”, the DVD, which is edited by the band’s guitarist Falke, includes live footage of FOSCOR’s 2010 appearance at the Sala KGB in Barcelona, along with a documentary chronicling the last ten years, and the music video for the track “I Tornà de les Cendres” from the 2007 album “The Smile of the Sad Ones”.  Also included will be two commemorative A3 posters, one which features the cover art etching by Cynthia Meier-Dusol entitled “Nous Sommes Condamnés À Être Libres”, and the second one features the Funeral Stone design, by Ideophony, which also appears on the band’s new stage sets and merchandise. The artwork on the DVD itself is by Dios Perezoso.   “Deu Anys Vers La Foscor” will be released on the Darkwoods label on the 28th January and comes in A5 format and is limited to 250 hand numbered copies.  Below you can see the video trailer for FOSCOR’s “Deu Anys Vers La Foscor”

Although it’s been ten years since their first release, FOSCOR was in fact formed in 1997 in Barcelona, Spain, and is not only one of the few Black Metal bands hailing from that city, but also one of only a handful of bands that uses the Catalan language of the region in some of the lyrics. With three full length albums under their belts, the last one being “Groans to the Guilty” in 2009, FOSCOR are currently working on their next album, and have contributed a track to the album “ÖND – A Tribute to Enslaved”, which is due for release later this year.

Frontman Fiar commented “We wanted to make 2012 something special.  Aside from all the live appearances we are currently planning, we are also welcoming a new lead guitarist, A.M. (formerly of VIDRES A LA SANG) who will be replacing Wilhkiem who has left the band after being with us for seven years.  We have also formalized our relationship with Patricia Thomas, the UK-based manager who has been a personal friend for several years now, and who works with some amazing names in Black and Extreme Metal, both legendary and upcoming.  So it’s very much the end of one era for FOSCOR and the beginning of a new one. One which we are all looking forward to”.   More information about FOSCOR can be found on the band’s website at http://www.foscor.com

SO MUCH FOR NOTHING, the band formed in 2007 by SARKOM front man Erik Unsgaard, has previewed a second track from the forthcoming album “Livsgnist”, which is set for release on the 16th January on MY KINGDOM MUSIC in both CD and LP version.  The track, titled “Suffer in Silence”, sees several guest artists joining the band’s two-man line up, with SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth providing additional lyrics and vocals, PANTHEON I’s Live Julianne Kostøl on the cello, TROLLFEST’s Martin Storm-Olsen on acoustic guitar, and Ingvild Sareeta Kaare, formerly of RAM-ZET on violin. “Suffer in Silence” can be heard on the band’s MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/somuchfornothing and on the SoundCloud player above.

Aside from Unsgaard himself on guitars and vocals, the nucleus of the band includes URGEHAL drummer Uruz who joined the band in 2009 when, having written eight songs, Unsgaard realised that he was ready to take the first steps to expand the band from what was initially a solo project.  Drawing inspiration from the general decadence that has seeped into society over the years, SO MUCH FOR NOTHING’S sound is a mix of brooding black metal and dark melodies, which together perfectly creates the decadent atmosphere that Unsgaard seeks to express through his music.

With his experience as a musician on the Norwegian Black and Extreme Metal scenes, Unsgaard has been able to draw on an abundance of guests from the Scandinavian metal scene to appear on “Livsgnist”.  Apart from the ones previously mentioned, other guests include SHINING guitarist Peter Huss, TROLLFEST’s Dag Stiberg and Eirik Renton, URGEHAL’s Trondr Nefas, PANTHEON I’s “Aethyris” McKay (ex-ABSU) and Seidemann (1349) and pianist Kyrre Olavsrud

“Livsgnist” is SO MUCH FOR NOTHING’s first full length album, having previously released “Sublife Warranty”, a 7” split with ANGST SQVADRON, on Folter Records. A listening session for “Livsgnist” is scheduled for the 14th September at Unholy in Oslo.  Full track listing for the album as follows:

1) Suicide-Syndrome
2) One Last Night
3) Perfect
4) Suffer in Silence
5) My Precious
6) Livsgnist
7) New Life – New Beginning

Sweden’s SHINING the, extreme metal band founded by controversial front man Niklas Kvarforth, has today entered the Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden, with producer Andy La Rocque to begin recording the bands eighth full-length album, which, as is usual with SHINING, currently only bears the working title VIII.

SHINING has set up a blog which will track the whole recording process, and will feature updates from the band’s manager, who will be present throughout the filming, and contributions from the various members themselves, as well as a “fly on the wall” video diary.  The blog, together with the first two posts, which include an introductory video with Kvarforth, can be found at http://www.shiningviii.blogspot.com/

VULTURE INDUSTRIES will play two shows in February, which will see the Norwegian Progressive Extreme Metallers perform a set which will include some unexpected material that the band is rehearsing especially for these two performances. Also making a guest appearance for some of the set will be TAAKE front man Hoest.

The first of the two dates will take place on the 3rd February at Dirty Skunks, in the Kino Siska, an old movie theatre in Ljubljana, Slovenia.  Entrance to this show will be free, as the venue will be celebrating its tenth anniversary.  The second date will be on the 4th February at Blue Hell in Budapest, and will mark VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ first ever appearance in Hungary.

Based in Bergen, and with two critically acclaimed releases on DARK ESSENCE RECORDS under their belts, VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ line up is composed of Bjornar Nilsen (BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) on vocals, keys and programming,  guitarists Øyvind Madsen (SULPHUR, ex-ENSLAVED) and Eivind Huse (SULPHUR), Kyrre Teigen on bass and Tor Helge Gjengedal (ex-TAAKE) on drums.   Nilsen, who also happens to be TAAKE’s producer, is known for his highly theatrical on-stage performances, and the additional appearance of Hoest, one of Black Metal’s most focussed and dynamic front men, is an indication that these two shows promise to be something very special.

Back in 2005, when, as you can see, they all looked fresh-faced and innocent, some TrollfesT members (details below) recorded a few Christmas songs for fun which they gave to their friends and families as a Christmas present. Now their list of friends and family has increased to include all their fantastic fans from all over the world, so here, only over the Christmas period, is that TrollfesTive recording. Bing Crosby doesn’t need to worry too much that they’ll overtake him in popularity at Christmas, but hopefully you’ll enjoy listening to the songs while you raise your glasses as much as they enjoyed making them. And you can bet they’ll be raising theirs to you all. SKÅL!
