Perhaps until now better known as the sculptor whose extraordinary work graced the stage and album covers for bands such as MAYHEM, Spacebrain is set to launch the debut album from his band SUCHTHAUS with a show at his own music venue the Spacebunker in Oslo, Norway, on the 17th December. Whilst the event is a celebration of the release of “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, it also marks the closure of the unique venue itself, where the audiences mingled and the bands played amongst Spacebrain’s sculptures. Spacebrain himself has now confirmed that he no longer intends to continue with his sculpting, but will instead concentrate on his music and SUCHTHAUS, so this will probably be the last time that his sculptures and stage sets are on display together in one place.
The 14-track album, which comes in at just over 72 minutes in length and is released on Spacebrain’s own label Rollabigone Records on the 17th December, has all the trademarks of Spacebrain’s perspective as a visual artist. He is insistent that the band is given no genre label, and that the tracks bear no names so that the listeners come to them with no preconceptions and can form their own opinions. SUCHTHAUS itself is formed of the nucleus of Spacebrain and Fruen, with a fluid line up that varies as the fancy takes them, whilst the list of guests on the album is as eclectic as the band itself with, amongst others, SKITLIV and former MAYHEM frontman Maniac, MAYHEM drummer Jan Axel Blomberg , CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Ingvar Magnusson of SKITLIV, Fredrik A. Juell of BURNING RUBBER and BERSERK BASTARDS, and Sibob Jawara who has sung the world-over but has never used a microphone before recording with SUCHTHAUS. It is certainly worth noting that this will be the first time that Maniac and Blomberg appear together on an album since the vocalist quit MAYHEM several years ago. As to which tracks feature which guests, well, the band prefers it if the listeners reach their own conclusions.
Commenting on his decision to move away from sculpting to concentrate of music, Spacebrain had this to say “I’d reached the point where it was becoming impractical for me to continue to work with the metal and other heavy materials that I was using for my sculptures. First of all I’m not as young as I used to be, and the work was physically very taxing, and secondly and probably more importantly, finding premises in Oslo that could house the size of work that I was producing had become virtually impossible. With the building that houses the Spacebunker due for demolition, it was the right time for me to change direction. After all, music and performance has always been an integral part of what I do, and art is art, whatever form it takes, so it’s not as big a leap as it might at first appear”.
“SUCHTHAUS” he continues “is a reflection of our own musical preferences and you can’t therefore squeeze it into some particular genre. Every track on “The Dark Side and the Bright Side” has its own individual character – the atmosphere changing with our mood and the amount of drugs and alcohol we consume while we’re making the sounds, and varies from the very dark to the very bright. Most tracks are an experiment with sounds, and we start each one with no plan or idea of where the piece will lead us. Some tracks are made as a one man project; others have 7-8 contributors. The best way to describe what we do is that instead of making visual sculptures, we try to make sound sculptures, although we do visualize them with the help of videos”. With the end of the recording sessions in sight for DEAD TROOPER, front man and guitarist Morten Müller revealed a little information about what to expect from the Norwegian Thrashers sophomore full-length album. “We’re recording 13 tracks, and we expect to use 9 of those on the album, but obviously we’ll make our minds up exactly how many, and which ones, once we’ve finished the whole process. We’ve taken a much more organic approach than the one we took with our first full-length album “Cynicist”, and we’re aiming at injecting a lot more of the energy that you find in our live performances into the new one”.
Formed in 2002 in Oslo, by Morten Müller and Birger Larsen together with then members Are Sorknes and Andreas Paulsen, DEAD TROOPER has since released two EPs as well as the debut album “Cynicist” which appeared in 2009, and has regularly played live, bringing their brand of what the band describes as “groovy, aggressive thrash metal” not only to audiences in their native Norway but also as far afield as South America. “There was a point”, says Müller, “when we had gone through the usual line up changes that bands go through in their attempt to find the perfect line up, when I was almost tempted to wind the whole thing up, but then in 2008 the most incredible drummer in the shape of Jon Eirik Bokn came into the band’s life. His skills are matched by his larger than life personality, and his arrival brought a whole new enthusiasm and creativity to DEAD TROOPER. He was followed into the band by 1349, DEN SAAKALDTE and PANTHEON I bass player Tor R. Stavenes, who brought his own unique take on things, and we knew at that point that we had a good mix. We are very happy to say that this enthusiasm and creativity has remained unabated since their arrival”.
With all DEAD TROOPER’s members having a wealth of experience in various other projects, both on a regular and on a session basis, the band has been able to attract a formidable array of friends, guests and collaborators to appear on the new album, which is to be called “Erector”. These include Grutle of ENSLAVED, Torbjørn Schei (KEEP OF KALESSIN, HELLISH OUTCAST), Drekka Dag and Manskow (TROLLFEST), Live Julianne (PANTHEON I) and Destructhor (MORBID ANGEL, MYRKSKOG, ex ZYKLON, ex 1349). A label is currently being sought. More information about DEAD TROOPER can be found at http://www.deadtrooper.com/

FROSTMOON ECLIPSE founder and guitarist Claudio Alcara features on two tracks on “Patience”, the forthcoming four-track EP release from GODHEADSCOPE. “Patience“ is the third release from the Californian one-man project formed in 2006 by M. Rosin, and, according to Rosin himself represents GODHEADSCOPE’s “most complete bridging of modern composition and ambient with art-rock and folk”. The EP will initially be released as a digital download on the 29th November at godheadscope.bandcamp.com before being available through all the usual digital retailers on Meristem Music. More information about GODHEADSCOPE can be found at www.godheadscope.com
Track listing on “Patience” as follows:
1. Patience
2. Solidarity
3. Medusa In the Cistern
4. The Screaming Mound
Alcara, who contributes guitar melodies for the tracks “Solidarity” and “The Screaming Mound”, is himself due to release an album for his STROSZEK project in December of this year on Hypnotic Dirge Records. “Sound Graveyard Bound” will be the third full-length release from STROSZEK, the band that allows Alcara not only to perform vocals, but also to display his consummate guitar skills in a more melodic, introspective fashion, as opposed to the Black Metal for which he is best known with FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, who themselves released their fifth full-length album “The End Stands Silent” on Osmose Productions in early 2011. “Of Love and Death”, the second full-length album from German Epic Metallers CROM is set for release on Pure Steel Records on the 25th November. Formed in 1997 by former DARK FORTRESS guitarist Walter “Crom” Grosse, the new album will be CROM’s sixth release and a follow up to 2008’s critically acclaimed “Vengeance”. Produced by Grosse himself, and engineered by Victor Bullok at the latter’s At The Crypt Studios, the line up on the album comprises Crom on vocals, guitars, bass and choirs, Seraph (DARK FORTRESS, NONEUCLID, REVAMP) on drums and V. Santura (DARK FORTRESS, TRIPTYKON, ex CELTIC FROST) on additional guitars and choirs. Artwork for the album is once again by the noted artist Kris Verwimp, an old friend and collaborator of Grosse’s. Long-time CROM fans may recognise two tracks on the new album. “My Destiny” first appeared on the now much sought-after 2004 Demo, whilst “The Fallen Beauty” featured on the EP of the same name, but both have been re-recorded for “Of Love and Death”. Track listing on “Of Love and Death” as follows:
1. Reason to Live
2. Lifetime – The Fallen Beauty Part II
3. Just One Blink
4. The Oceans Wide
5. My Song For All The Broken Hearts
6. My Destiny
7. This Dying World
8. Eternal Dreaming
9. The Fallen Beauty 2010 (Bonus Track)
Whilst CROM’s debut full length album “Vengeance” dealt with love and loss in the heroic settings of legendary kings and warriors, “Of Love and Death” still features Grosse’s soaring vocals and epic melodies, but this time the same themes are dealt with on a much more personal and intimate level. “Vengeance was the album that really defined CROM’s sound in terms of melody and vocals,” explained Grosse, “and I was always drawn to the subject of the doomed hero fighting battles he knows he can’t win. The music side of both albums was, in fact, recorded at the same time, but the songs on “Vengeance” were chosen to reflect the warrior’s point of view, whilst the ones that I wanted to include on “Of Love and Death” were the ones that we could all relate to on a day to day level. I appreciate that fans see CROM as synonymous with the fantasy warrior aspects, and that “Of Love and Death” might come as a bit of a surprise. Maybe we should look at is as the “calm before the storm” of the next album”.
CROM’s deal with Pure Steel Records is for two albums, and work has already begun on the follow up to “Of Love and Death”, and if the title “When Northmen Die” is anything to go by, it promises a return to the Pagan/Viking themes that Grosse’s fans are more familiar with, as well as a heavier sound. More information about CROM, including a background to all the releases with comments from Grosse about his thinking behind them can be found on the band’s newly designed website at http://www.croms-revenge.com/
Danish Black Metallers BLODARV have reached an agreement with the Slovenian underground label Nigrum Serpentis Production, for the release of a retrospective compilation that will cover ten years of the band’s history. The ten-track CD will contain various tracks from BLODARV’s pro-releases, including the bonus track “Six feet Below As She Wished For Death” which was originally written in 1996 and up to now has only been available on the first BLODARV demo “Murder in the Name of Satan”. The album is set to run for 60 minutes and comes with a twelve-page booklet containing lyrics (the band writes in both Danish and English), photos and fan art which detail the history of BLODARV, whose founder and front man Hugin lives on Bornholm, an island steeped in history and myths and legends, and whose music takes its listeners on a journey along dark paths peopled by powerful demons, haunted souls, tragic destinies and chilling dreams. Track listing for “A Demon’s Diary” as follows:
1. Under Satans Vinger
2. Daemonstormens Tid
3. Power Of A Soul
4. Where The Beast Dwell
5. Those Who Speaks In Minds
6. Heksen Nitiria Amlech
7. Sealed In Black With Silver Stars
8. Beyond Life
9. Langt Vaek Fra Livet
10. Natteskarn
*Bonus track: “Six Feet Below As She Wished For Death”
Despite an accident which smashed Hugin’s jaw and left him unable to either sing or perform live for most of 2011 while it healed, the vocalist has nevertheless been busy. Work has been progressing well on BLODARV’s next full-length album, and the band featured two previously un-released tracks on the “Shadows of Tragedy” compilation which was released on Self Mutilation Services in September of this year. Hugin himself has been working on two further projects, one being the 7” “Laesaabobbainjnj” EP from his side-project SANSÂGER for which a release date has still to be set, and the other a collaboration with Norwegian musician ELENYX (COMBATH), along with Sweden’s IT (ABRUPTUM, VONDUR, OPTHALAMIA), on the new album “Heksevind” from her NÅE project. With their frontman now once more fit and well, BLODARV will mark their return to the stage with a gig at The Rock in Copenhagen on the 26th November, supporting Germany’s ENDSTILLE. More information about BLODARV can be found at http://www.myspace.com/blodarv

SHINING’s NIKLAS KVARFORTH has joined the list of musicians and bands who will appear at a special Benefit Concert for SLAVIA founder and front man JONAS R. CHRISTIANSEN (ex-DISIPLIN) who is suffering from cancer. The concert, “ALGIR: Støttekonsert for Jonas R. Christiansen”, which will be held at the Garage in Bergen, Norway, on Friday 18th November, has been organised by friends of the musician, who hope to add to the funds already raised to send Christiansen for treatment in Denmark.
The line up on the evening features sets from HELHEIM and GRAVDAL, as well as SLAVIA themselves, in a performance that will mark CHRISTIANSEN’s final appearance with the band that has been so central to his life over the years and which, in all likelihood, will not go on without him. A “Supergroup” line up comprising NOCTURNO CULTO of DARKTHRONE, HOEST of TAAKE, and SATYR and FROST of SATYRICON will get together for the event to play a special DARKTHRONE/SATYRICON set.
KVARFORTH will appear on stage with GRAVDAL to perform the track “Mishandlet” from the band’s latest album “Torturmantra”. As well as guesting on the track for the album, the SHINING front man recently announced that the song was one of the tracks he had chosen for inclusion on his upcoming double CD solo retrospective “Fifteen Years of Absolute Darkness” which is due for release on Spinefarm Records in December, and charts fifteen years of his often controversial musical career.
Commenting on KVARFORTH’s appearance at the Benefit Concert, GRAVDAL founder PHOBOS (AETERNUS, GALAR, MALSAIN) said: “Like all the other artists and people involved in the Benefit Concert we wanted to make this something special for Jonas, so we asked NIKLAS if he would consider guesting with us. He agreed without any hesitation whatsoever to take time out of a very busy schedule to come along from Sweden and contribute to everyone’s efforts to help not only one of our fellow musicians, but also a friend to so many on the Bergen scene”.
Below you can hear the original album version of the GRAVDAL track “Mishandlet” from the album “Tortrumantra” featuring NIKLAS KVARFORTH on guest vocals.
Work is set to begin this month on the fifth full-length album from TROLLFEST, the band that has eschewed musical convention by combining local folk sounds from their native Norway with those from the Balkans, and mixing them together with occasional melodies that could originate anywhere from the Latino countries to the Middle East, and topping it all with head banging metal and a generous dose of humour, in order to form their own genre of “True Norwegian Balkan Metal”. The band will enter the Strand Studios on the 7th November to spend three weeks in the company of engineer Marius Strand to record drums, bass, guitars and main vocals, and then move on to their own “Trollskogen Recording Facilities” to record the extra vocals, choirs, and instruments. Updates on the recording, including photos and video, will be available on the band’s blog at http://trollfest.blogg.no/
The album will be called “Brumlebassen” and as with all TROLLFEST’s previous releases will tell a story involving Trolls and a certain amount of drinking. Without wanting to give too much away at this early stage a spokesperson for the band said that the storyline will revolve around a brewer called Brumlebassen who is charged with making the mead much beloved by the Trolls. Cover art for the album will once again be in the hands of Swedish artist and cartoonist Jonas Darnell and designer Terje “Andy Wartroll”, both of whom have worked with the band for several years, and whose work on the band’s last album “En Kvest For Den Hellige Gral” has yet again proved to be a huge hit with the fans and an integral part of the overall TROLLFEST “experience”.
The band, which comprises members of URGEHAL, PANTHEON I, UNTIME, MELCH, SARKOM, HALLUCINATIONS and POWERSWORD has already written ten metal tracks and a handful of acoustic ones, and will decide which to include on the album once recording is completed. There will also be guest musicians, who will be announced at a later date. “Brumlebassen” is set for release early next year on NoiseArt Records and then TROLLFEST plan to expand on this year’s live appearances during which the band has collected a whole set of new fans who have found themselves caught up in the band’s musically skilled and infectiously fun-filled performances.
More information about TROLLFEST can be found on the band’s website at http://www.trollfest.com.

We’re coming to the end of yet another eventful year for BLODARV, and once again, in what we hope will become a tradition, I will take a look back at the achievements, and, it has to be said, mishaps that we went through, and a look forward to the year to come.
January kicked off 2011 in what looked like a great way. YNLEBORGAZ was fit and at full power after an enforced rest following knee surgery and once again BLODARV was ready to hit the stage. Dedicated Booking had already booked us two shows, the first of which took place in Copenhagen at Beta and was a more than successful return to live performing for the band – (photo left by Ravna).
With our second show set to take place at PH-Cafeen in May, disaster unfortunately struck again, and the show had to be cancelled when my jaw, which was already recovering from earlier surgery, was badly broken following an accident. With some bone needing to be removed from my jaw, recovery from this was obviously not going to happen overnight. In fact, it took half a year, during which time not only was I unable to sing, but I was also not able to eat anything more exciting than soup.
The time was not entirely wasted however, and despite not being able to rehearse I was still able to start mixing the drum tracks for the next BLODARV full-length album. I had actually already composed most of the album back in 2010, and all the drums tracks had already been recorded by YNLEBORGAZ in December of that year when he visited my home and studio (HammerArt & Studio’s) on the island of Bornholm. A few months later we began recording the guitars, and the next step will be to record the bass, for which HUUL will come to the island over several weekends to lay down the bass lines. And then, of course, it will be time to do the vocals. All the lyrics have already been written, so an evil guess would be that the next full-length will probably be ready during the first half of 2012.
In between working on the new album, answering interviews, doing layouts for cover art, I was also working at getting my jaw healed again – rehearsing in small amounts alone in the studio, starting with one song in the first week, and gradually adding one extra song week by week, until I was once more fit to do a full live set-list without my jaw falling apart. The preparation paid off, and at the end of Sept 2011 I was ready to hit the stage again.
We have also, for the last 3 months, been rehearsing with a substitute drummer by the name of FJORGYNN, who will play live session drums for us on those occasions when BLODARV’s live schedule clashes with that of YNLEBORGAZ’s other band ANGANTYR. Fortunately for us FJORGYNN has turned out to be a superb live drummer for BLODARV, being able to sync with the band both in terms of his personality and his excellent drumming skills. He will make his first appearance with the band at the Rock in Copenhagen on the 26th November when BLODARV will support ENDSTILLE, which will also be my first time on stage since my injury.
The 16th of September this year saw the release of the split CD “Shadows Of Tragedy” on Self Mutilation Services. The Limited Edition CD (500 copies only) features BLODARV, GRIMLAIR, NOCTURNAL DEPRESSION, BLACK HATE & ACEDI. The two tracks contributed by BLODARV are both previously unreleased songs written at the same time as the band’s “Civitas Diaboli” album, which was itself released on Self Mutilation Services in 2009. The first track, “Sharpstone Mountain”, is effectively a prelude to the tale recounted in the “Blood Red Rocks” track from “Civitas Diaboli”, whilst the second track, “I Hulernes Rige” is a melancholy acoustic song, which gives our female vocalist SATINAE MA a chance to take the lead on vocals.
As if enough hadn’t happened in September, including the offer to release a retrospective compilation, which I will come back to later, I also started to collaborate on the upcoming NÅE Project. This came about after years of sharing musical ideas and visions with ELENYX (COMBATH). Actually it’s turned into something of a Nordic alliance with Norway’s ELENYX, who founded NÅE, and myself being joined on the album by Sweden’s IT (ABRUPTUM, VONDUR, OPTHALAMIA). The album will be called “Heksevind” and ELENYX herself will work on composition, lyrics, and vocals and play various instruments on the album, whilst I will provide vocals and additional lyrics and IT will participate both musically and with written material. The exact details of the collaboration will be known as the work progresses. “Heksevind” will be recorded both at my own HammerArt and Studios on the Danish island of Bornholm and at ELENYX’s own recording facilities in Oslo.
Aside from the positive, we also had some negatives in 2011. One of them being the release of my side-project SANSÂGER, which should by now have been out as a 7” EP. As is often the case with these things, there have been some problems in communication between the band and the label, and right now we don’t know exactly when it will be released, but I somehow doubt that will happen this year at this late stage, so you will probably only see this appear in 2012. When it is eventually released, it will be limited to 300 copies, and come with a limited edition shirt and patch. The EP, to be titled “Laesaabobbainjnj”, explores the thousand year old culture of the Danish island of Bornholm which came to an end at the death of Earl Blod Egil, and was subsequently replaced by Christianity. Artwork for the release and the vocal recordings were done at HammerArt & Studios.
That about wraps it up for 2011, so what lies ahead for BLODARV in 2012 aside from getting the SANSÂGER 7” EP out?
Well, first of all there is the retrospective compilation CD I touched on earlier. Around September time, when everything seemed to be happening, I was contacted by a label who wanted to release a BLODARV compilation CD. I gathered one hours worth of the best tracks from a ten-year period and made a complete cover layout with a 12 page booklet full of photos, drawings, and lyrics. Unfortunately when it was all ready to be shipped for pressing the “label” admitted it was only interested in releasing it on CDr, and not as a pro CD, which of course was totally out of the question. We have, since then, spoken to some of the labels we already knew, and knew we could trust, and right now we are working on the last details with a label for this release, and if everything goes to plan the compilation CD, which will carry the title ” A Demon’s Diary” will be released in the first half of 2012
2012 will also mean a lot of hard work for all of us rehearsing the new tracks and making sure they are 110 percent tight and ready to be added to the live setlist. At the same time that “A Demon’s Diary” is released, we are planning a smaller tour in Denmark together with another band. It’s all in the planning stage right now so I can’t say too much about it, but if all goes well we will be visiting various venues in Denmark in the spring. We hope to get a lot of gigs now that we are finally fit enough to hit the road after all the shit both myself and YNLEBORGAZ had to go through after our operations. We have some new stage-effect machines, and have been working hard to produce a more intense show. Obviously we are all very eager to get out and reclaim the stages, but only the venues, the fans and the bookers have a say in this matter.
Most important of course for 2012 is the next BLODARV album which will actually will be the first full-length since “Soulcollector…The thousand Years Tale” LP released by Northern Silence back in 2004. Between then and now, we have only released the mini albums, “Linaria Amlech” and “Civitas Diaboli”, but now the time is right and we are ready for the next full-length, and I promise it will have been worth the wait! As I mentioned earlier, much of it is already finished, and the final touches will be made during 2012. When exactly it will be released is harder to say, but I think I should be way off target if it wasn’t released at the end of 2012 on Self Mutilation Services. During the first month of 2012 we will do the photo-shoots and I will work on the layout for the cover and all that kind of thing. There is always quite a process involved in making an album the way we do, not only because our members have to travel by ship to visit each other, but also due to the fact that we want to do everything ourselves – from recording each track, to mixing, to doing the artwork and the photo-sessions, absolutely everything – and as at least some of you know, such things take time, especially if you take pride in what you create.
Okay, I am sure there are things that I forgot to mention as it’s been a hectic year, but that pretty much sums it up I think, and I would just like to give the biggest of all hails to all our connections, friends, fans, and followers, or whatever it’s all called these days. We’ve got the best ones! \m/ -Hugin 24 October 2011

Due to the fact that BLODARV’s session drummer YNLEBORGAZ is frequently busy these days with his own band ANGANTYR, we have been trying out an additional live drummer who goes by the name of FJORGYNN. He has been drumming with us for the last six rehearsals and has proved himself to be a superb live drummer who fits right in with BLODARV – being able to understand the flow and energy of our music and synch completely with the band.
This means that BLODARV is now in a position to be able to accept more live shows, without having to worry about the ones that YNLEBORGAZ can’t make. And who knows, you might even be able to see BLODARV and ANGANTYR appearing at the same festivals in the future.
The first show to feature FJORGYNN in action will be on the 26th November when BLODARV will be supporting ENDSTILLE at the Rock in Copenhagen (DK).
