With a release date set for the 13th February, Avandgarde Music has debuted “Lupercale”  a  track from “Clangores Plenilunio”, the debut five-track EP from Black-Folk Metallers SELVANS.   Fans of the band will be somewhat familiar with the track, as a digital single edit was released a few months ago, but now the track is finally available in its entirety and running for over 9 minutes.  The track can be heard above and at https://avantgardemusic.bandcamp.com/album/clangores-plenilunio where the EP, in digipack and digital versions, as well as a special bundle that includes a T shirt and poster of the band’s much lauded artwork, can be pre-ordered.

Track listing for “Clangores Plenilunio”, which includes cover of “… In the Woods” from the “Heart of Ages” album by Norway’s IN THE WOODS as follows:

Lupercale
1. Clangores Plenilunio
3. Prologue
4. … In the Woods (In the Woods cover)
5. Epilogue

Formed  following the demise of DRAUGR, who called it quits last year after 10 years as one of the top Black-Folk Metal bands on the Italian scene, SELVANS sets out to  recreate the mysticism and the folklore of the different ethnic  cultures that inhabited Italy throughout the ages.  To do this the band uses not only its music and lyrics, but also its aesthetics, and, in fact, the release date of  “Clangores Plenilunio” was specifically chosen as the 13th February is the date on which the the ancient Lupercalis Festival began.   The  lineup on “Clangores Plenilunio” includes Selvans Haruspex (Ursus Arctos of DRAUGR)  on vocals,  keyboards and traditional instruments , Sethlans Fulguriator (Mors of DRAUGR) on guitar, and DRAUGR co-founders Stolas on bass and the late Jonny Morelli on drums and vocals.  It is very much a bittersweet release for the band, who want it to be a tribute to Morelli, who was tragically killed in a motorbike accident shortly after finishing recording the drums and part of the vocals.

As Selvans Haruspex recently explained, he and Morelli handled the vocals between them, with Haruspex finishing what Morelli was sadly unable to.  “Jonny and I worked closely together  when it came to deciding on the lyrical theme for the song, and we did a lot of research on the Sibyl’s Cave, which, legend has it, is located in the Marche region of central Italy.  The fascination of this place, and the legends associated with it,  was a great inspiration to us and we had planned to use the folklore surrounding it in several SELVANS pieces in the future.   Although Jonny died before he could finish parts of the text, I completed them,  and whilst  “Clangores Plenilunio” is the first piece that features the Appennine Sybil, it definitely won’t be the last”.  A video teaser for the title track can be seen below and at  http://youtu.be/rZwpCXkO_fI

SELVANS will be playing a series of shows in support of “Clangores Plenilunio”, the first two having already been confirmed as follows:

07 March, Romaobscura III Festival, Traffic Live Club, Rome, Italy
27 March, Ride ‘n’ Roll, Chieti, Italy

The release date of SHINING’s ninth full-length album, which will be titled “IX / Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends” and will appear on Season of Mist,  has been set for the 20th April.

Commenting on the album, SHINING’s founder and frontman NIKLAS KVARFORTH had this to say: “For once I am extremely pleased with how the album turned out and I believe that the fevered presence of filth and uncompromising darkness is more prominent than ever before.  Not only will our more recent fan-base “enjoy” the oppression contained therein but I am also certain that those who stopped listening to SHINING after our fifth album will find the new one plague-ridden with what some might have felt was lacking on the more recent efforts… that atmosphere of old”.

SHINING  has also re-launched their website which  has undergone a complete makeover  by  the Japanese design company Ogino Design (http://oginodesign.com/ ) who will also be responsible for keeping the site regularly updated with news, live listings etc. , under supervision from the band.  The re-launched website can be found at  www.shiningasylum.com

Kvarforth recently announced that long-time SHINING collaborator Martin Strandberg, who was responsible for the videos for “Tillsammans Är Vi Allt” and “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” from  the band’s seventh full length album “VII / Född Förlorare”, and who is currently working on a documentary about the band, is directing a video for a track from “IX / Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends”.  Photos from the video shoot can be found at http://www.facebook.com/shiningofficial

SHINING will embark on a series of Japanese dates in January, and will head for Canada in April to appear at the Messe des Morts Festival in Montreal, as well as making a series of festival appearances.  All dates so far confirmed can be seen at, where those currently being discussed will be added on a regular basis

With six full-length albums under their belts, Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have decided that their next release will be an EP, echoing their very first release back in 1996, but demonstrating how very far the band has come since then.  The four-track EP, titled “Evil Messiah”,  will be released in both in Digipack CD and 12″ vinyl formats on My Kingdom music on the 23rd February. One of the tracks  is a cover version of Alice Cooper’s “Sick Things”,  the perfect choice for a band who excel at creating an evil, malignant,  atmosphere.    Artwork for the album is by Morten Hansen.

Track listing for “Evil Messiah” as follows:

1. Evil Messiah
2. Armageddon
3. Abandoned by God
4. Sick Things (Alice Cooper cover)

“Evil Messiah” will also be the first time that CREST OF DARKNESS’ new lineup records together, with former PALE FOREST drummer Bernhard joining the lineup of founder, frontman and bassist Ingar Amlien (ROQUEFIRE, CONCEPTION, AMLIEN’s INFERNO) and guitarist Rebo.  Guesting on the “Evil Messiah”  is Kristian Wentzel  on keyboards.  The EP was mixed and partly recorded at the MLP Studios and partly in Rebo’s own studio  studio in Gjøvik .

CREST OF DARKNESS are set to play three Norwegian dates in February, the first being on the 13th at the Felix Pub and Scene in Lillehammer. On  the 14th the band will play two shows at the Kultursenter in Gjøvik, where the early show, starting at 18:00, will be open to all ages, something that is quite rare in Norway, a country with strict age restrictions at its venues.  This will then be followed by a show for audiences aged 18 and upwards at 21:00.

CREST OF DARKNESS will also make their first ever UK appearance at the Black Hart in Camden, London, on the 7th March,  on a bill that includes ACHERONTAS, THAW, MORD’A’STIGMATA and TOWERS OF FLESH

A rehearsal video featuring snippets of the material from “Evil Messiah” was recently released on the band’s YouTube channel and can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/B4iwk0ubmIQ

Fresh from inking a deal with Avantgarde Music, Black-Folk Metallers SELVANS have today revealed details of the bands first release on the label.  Due to hit the streets on the 13th of February, the release will be a five-track EP entitled “Clangores Plenilunio”, which will serve as a tribute to the band’s drummer, the late Jonny Morelli ,who was killed in June of last year shortly after finishing recording the drums and part of the vocals for the EP.   The release date has been specifically chosen as the 13th of February as this date marks the start of the ancient Lupercalia Festival.

As a lead up to the release, SELVANS have posted a video teaser of the title track “Clangores Plenilunio”,  a song that could almost be called a duet as the vocals are handled party by Jonny and partly by Selvans Haruspex, who explains the concept behind the song: “Jonny and I worked closely together  when it came to deciding on the lyrical theme for the song, and we did a lot of research on the Sibyl’s Cave, which, legend has it, is located in the Marche region of central Italy. The video teaser can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/rZwpCXkO_fI

SELVANS was formed following the demise of DRAUGR, and, through music, lyrics and aesthetics,  the band aims to recreate the mysticism and the folklore that the different ethnic  inhabitants of  Italy throughout the ages left behind them.  The  lineup on “Clangores Plenilunio” includes Selvans Haruspex (Ursus Arctos of DRAUGR)  on vocals,  keyboards and traditional instruments , Sethlans Fulguriator (Mors of DRAUGR) on guitar, and DRAUGR co-founders Stolas on bass and  Jonny Morelli on drums.  Recording took place at both  the Faunalia Studio and and Soluzioni Audio, and included is a cover of “… In the Woods” from the “Heart of Ages” album by Norway’s IN THE WOODS.  Track listing for “Clangores Plenilunio” as follows.

1. Lupercale
2. Clangores Plenilunio
3. Prologue
4. … In the Woods
5. Epilogue

SELVANS recently debuted a digital single edit of “Lupercale”,  a track that will appear on the EP in its full version  which runs to over  9 minutes in length.   “Lupercale”, is available direct from the band at https://selvans.bandcamp.com/track/lupercale-single-edit and can be heard below and on the band’s SoundCloud page at https://soundcloud.com/templeofselvans/lupercale-edit  or on YouTube at http://youtu.be/D8Zghhn-RIw

Norwegian Black Metallers ENDEZZMA have inked a deal with Pulverised Records for the release of their sophomore full-length album.  The finishing touches are currently being applied to the album, and it is anticipated that it will be released in the spring.   Commenting on the move to Pulverised, frontman and founder Morten Shax had this to say:  “We’re excited to be working with the guys from Pulverised as they have shown that they understand the band and what we are trying to achieve with our music, and that they are willing to work with us to that end”.

Details about the album have not been made public yet, but it will be the follow up to 2012’s “Erotik Nekrosis”, an album that showcased ENDEZZMA’s trademark sound with it’s cold and aggressive undertones and eerie atmosphere.  It also became somewhat of an epitaph for the  late Trondr Nefas (URGEHAL, BEASTCRAFT, VULTURE LORD) being, as it was, the last release he would ever record.

Aside from Shax on vocals, ENDEZZMA’s lineup also includes Mattis Malphas (BEASTCRAFT, HAGL, KOLDBRANN) and Nihil on guitars, Carl Balam (TROLL) on drums, and the most recent addition,  Jimmy Lucifer on bass.   “We have a superb lineup now” explains Shax, “musicians who are experienced, skilled and hungry –  perfect for ENDEZZMA in other words.  I don’t want to give anything away about the new album, and we will be announcing more details soon, but fans can expect a high level of aggression and musicianship”.

A music video for a track from the album is also in the works, and more information about ENDEZZMA can be found at http://www.facebook.com/endezzma

Dark Essence Records have announced March 16th as the release date for “De gjenlevende”, the new album from Norwegian Black-Folk Metallers GALAR.  The album, which will be the band’s 3rd full-length, was recorded at the Conclave and Earshot Studio in Bergen with producer and VULTURE INDUSTRIES frontman Bjørnar E. Nilsen handling the recording and mixing , whilst the mastering is by ENSLAVED’s Herbrand Larsen.  Artwork for the album is by  Robert Høyem of graphic designers Overhaus.  The track “Tusen kall til solsang ny”  from “De gjenlevende”,  has been debuted today and can be heard above and at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/galar-tusen-kall-til-solsang-ny

Joining the lineup for the album is Phobos (AETERNUS, GRAVDAL, MALSAIN) who was once again drafted in to handle the drums, as well as several session musicians including both a string quintet and a horn quartet –  unusual elements that are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album.  Track listing for  “De gjenlevende”, which is sung entirely in Norwegian, but which is accompanied by an explanatory booklet in English,  as follows:

1. De gjenlevende
2. Natt … og taust et forglemt liv
3. Bøkens hymne
4. Ljós
5. Gjeternes tunge steg
6. Tusen kall til solsang ny

Whilst “De gjenlevende” loses nothing of the epic grandeur that fans have come to expect from the band , this time GALAR  also delve further into their harsher and more extreme sound alongside their trademark symphonic  elements.   As the band’s lyricist Jorge Blutaar recently explained, the concept for “De gjenlevende”  is inspired by  Pan-European folklore, ontology, and elegies.  “Its five contemplative texts tell of the utter dreadfulness that haunts both the human mind and body when the season of winter holds every living thing in its grasp. Winter is the time of utter gloom, enfeeblement and inescapable death, which challenges mankind, beasts and plants equally. Yet, as long as there is life, there is hope, and eventually a new era of the Sun will bring to an end the seemingly eternal darkness of winter.  With the arrival of spring hope and life will flourish once more.  It is a portrayal of this cyclical process of transformation that is as old as the history of mankind itself”.

GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  The first time the new lineup will hit the stage will be at Inferno Festival in Oslo on the 1st of April at the Dark Essence Records label night at Blå, alongside label-mates TAAKE, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM.

Sweden’s SHINING has released photos taken during the  recent video shoot for a track from the band’s upcoming ninth full-length album, which is set to be released on Season of Mist in the spring. The photos, by Assi Viljanen,  have been uploaded onto SHINING’s  Facebook page and can be seen at http://www.facebook.com/shiningofficial

The only details regarding the video that SHINING is prepared to reveal for the time being is that it is being filmed in Helsinki, Finland and Belgrade, Serbia, and is directed by Martin Strandberg.  Strandberg was also responsible for the videos for “Tillsammans Är Vi Allt” and “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” from  the band’s seventh full length album “VII / Född Förlorare”, and is currently working on a “warts and all” documentary about the band.

Commenting on the video, SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth had this to say:  “Although Martin has worked on our videos before, this one will be something quite different from any previous efforts “.

The last release from SHINING was “8 ½ – Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd”,  which appeared on Dark Essence Records in 2013 and featured guest vocals from some of the elite of Black Metal including ATTILA CSIHAR (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR),  MANIAC (SKITLIV, EX MAYHEM), GAAHL (GOD SEED, WARDRUNA, TRELLDOM, EX GORGOROTH), FAMINE (PESTE NOIRE) and PEHR LARSSON (ALFAHANNE).

Shortly after announcing the formation of their new band THE 3rd ATTEMPT earlier this year and their departure from CARPATHIAN FOREST, guitarists Tchort (GREEN CARNATION, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex EMPEROR, ex BLOOD RED THRONE) and BloodPervertor (ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, APOSTASY, ex NEONGOD) went on to announce that they were holding online auditions for the position of vocalist for the new project.  As was to be expected when guitarists who had played with some of the biggest, and most iconic Norwegian bands advertised for a frontman, the resulting flood of applications was sizeable, so much so, in fact, that it has taken 4 months to listen to all the auditions and come to a decision.

Commenting on the process Tchort said “We were blown away, not only by the quantity of submissions we received, but also by the quality.   Those sending in auditions were given the option of making them public or keeping them private, so what you saw posted on the band’s Facebook page was only the tip of the iceberg of what we had to assess.  It took us a long time because we felt that everyone who sent in their demos deserved all the attention we could give them, and we would like to thank all the extraordinarily talented musicians who took part.  It was a difficult choice but in the end we opted for former MIDNATTSVREDE  and NECROCAVE vocalist Kaahrl Ødemark because his  delivery and attitude were very much in keeping with what we had in mind for THE 3rd ATTEMPT.  We have put together a demo of a track with Kaahrl on vocals as a way of introducing him to everyone.  The track “The Beast Within”, which also features CARPATHIAN FOREST’s Daniel Vrangsinn on bass and Anders Kobro on drums,  can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/the-3rd-attempt/the-3rd-attempt-the-beast-within-demo-track

Oslo-based Ødemark had this to say about auditioning: “The funny thing  is that at first I wasn’t even going to try because I honestly  thought that it was just some sort of PR exercise,  but  in the end I decided to contact the band’s manager and  ask if it was real, and she confirmed that it was absolutely legit. So  I picked up my microphone, my DAW and a pen and started working on those two demo-tracks 24/7 for a couple of days.  I didn’t really have any expectations but  I just did my best and before I knew it  I was talking to Tchort and BloodPervertor themselves,  who asked to hear two full songs.  When they told me I’d been chosen as THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s frontman it was hard to sound professional with my brain was screaming ‘Fucking hell, I’m going to be the vocalist for two musicians I’ve worshipped since I was a teenager’.   Strangely this will be my third band, so you could also say that this will be my 3rd attempt too!”

Not surprisingly the decision taken by the Tchort and BloodPervertor to leave CARPATHIAN FOREST has raised a fair few questions, but Tchort is quick to put paid to any kind of negative speculation.  “People tell me all the time how hard it is to establish a new band these days, and there is no doubt that this is true, but for me it’s not about “making it”, it’s more about having the right environment for my creativity, and that “hunger” to tread a new path and push boundaries.  To be honest I felt that I was no longer giving my best to CARPATHIAN FOREST.  It had started to become routine, and things had stopped being inspiring, so that writing  new material was becoming harder.   There were probably various reasons involved, but in the end I felt it would be better for CARPATHIAN FOREST if they injected some new blood into their ranks, someone who had the energy and inspiration that I was beginning to lack.  Someone  who could push them further.  I didn’t want to be the one to hold them back because I couldn’t give them 100% of myself.

“At the same time I had reached the point where I myself was in need that same inspiration and drive in order to regain my focus. When we held the online vocalist auditions, there were two contributions in particular that grabbed my attention and I found myself rewinding the songs and listening  to them again and again. The talent and effort they demonstrated really got my creativity going and that was just what I was looking for.  One thing both BloodPervertor and I were sure about was that we wanted to continue the interplay we had developed over the years in CARPATHIAN FOREST, so we made our choice and with a new vocalist onboard we are now hard at work on new material and have already started booking live shows, so we are definitely hitting the ground running. I think it’s fair to say that the passion is slowly growing within us again and we are looking forward to meeting old and new fans again soon”.

The 3rd ATTEMPT’s first live appearance will be on the 18th February at Blastfest in Bergen, Norway.
