VANHELGA, one of Sweden’s most extreme exponents of the DSBM genre  are set to re-release an extended version of their 2014 Mini Album “LPT” which was previously only available in digital format.  Completely remastered, and with the addition of a never-before released track ” Drömlik eufori”,  as well as new artwork,  “LPT” will be available in Digipak format and will be strictly limited to 300 copies worldwide.

Quite possibly the most personal, and disturbing,  release from a band known for its disturbing lyrics and imagery, “LPD” was written by founder J. Ottosson, who based it on his own experiences during an enforced involuntary stay in a psychiatric hospital, to which he was  committed under the Swedish  ‘Lagen om Psykiatrisk Tvångsvård’ law.  The “LPT” of the title.

“LPT” is a raw and almost unbearable emotionally honest account of the pure suffering  and  horrors that result from someone who is not only undergoing drug withdrawal  but is also suffering from psychosis and mental health problems,  and who is being confined within the dark corridors of a psychiatric hospital against their will.

Formed in Linköping, Sweden, in 2001 by  J. Ottosson, aka 145188, who got together with likeminded musicians in order to finally breathe life into his vision, something he had not been able to do with any previous bands and musicians he had worked with.  Through their music and lyrics VANHELGA, which, translated from the Swedish means “Profane”, and whose current lineup includes 145188 (ESKAPI, ex-LIVELOVER)  on Guitars and Vocals,   J. Ejnarsson (TAKETH) on Guitars and Backing Vocals, and R. Jönsson on Bass, explores the darker side of humanity.  The one that few will admit exists, but which nevertheless is a huge part of every individual’s existence.

VANHELGA’s music can doubtlessly be classed as Black Metal, but that would be too restrictive a definition, and it is with no small sense of irony that the band has coined the phrase “Positive Music For Positive People” because VANHELGA’s  music is cold and sinister but with melodies and moments of melancholy that can draw you in and lull you into a false sense of security before you realize, too late, that you have been caught in an ominous web of sound that sends shivers down your spine.

Sweden’s VANHELGA, whose music falls between Black Metal and DSBM, and who use deceptively melodic pieces to create disturbing scenarios,  describe “Ode & Elegy” as being an album in two parts:   ” Ode” or “Old Diary Entries” is about the deteriorating mental state of a young woman, slipping further and further into depression and darkness. Her recorded voice is intertwined with the music.  “Elegy” is the continuation.  It’s about looking back and reflecting on those dark situations in life: the hopelessness, drugs, abuse, depression and death.  In summary, to understand and accept that life is without meaning”.

Sweden’s VANHELGA, one of the more extreme and uncompromising exponents of DSBM, and a band that seems to exist at the centre a maelstrom of creative output, is set to release a digital mini album on the 12th March. With the band’s sense of irony fully intact, the 5-track album is titled “Happiness” and is available directly from the band at https://vanhelga.bandcamp.com/album/happiness where it will be available at a special price, including wallpaper,  for the first few days, as well as from the usual digital distribution and streaming outlets.

Commenting on the new release, VANHELGA founder J. Ottosson, aka 145188 (ex-LIFELOVER (live session musician), ex-SKOGSTRON) had this to say: ” My constant need to write and record is a by-product of my mental state, and I am the first one to admit that whilst recording this I was under the strong influence of drugs. This resulted in a piece of work that is an expression of the effect of the use of self-destructive tools like drugs and self-mutilation in order to feel “happy”. Although we have a new VANHELGA album coming out on Art of Propaganda later in the year, I had a lot of material ready that I wanted to get out before then, and so we thought we’d do a digital self-release. Particularly since some of the material on “Happiness” might not necessarily fit in with the more “traditional” VANHELGA sound, and fans might find themselves a bit surprised by some of it”.

VANHELGA is also set to appear on an upcoming four-way split with OFDRYKKJA, PSYCHONAUT 4 and IN LUNA which will be released jointly on Art of Propaganda and Talheim Records on the 6th April. Titled “Urban Negativism”, VANHELGA will contribute two new tracks and a LIFELOVER cover to the ten-track album, which will first be released in a digipack format, with a vinyl version likely to appear later.

VANHELGA’s next live appearance will be at Kings of Black Metal in Alsfeld, Germany on the 24th April.

Sweden’s VANHELGA, a band known for their uncompromising and disturbing take on DSBM,  have announced the details of an upcoming four-way split with OFDRYKKJA, PSYCHONAUT 4 and IN LUNA.  VANHELGA will contribute two new tracks and a LIFELOVER cover to the ten-track album, which will be called “Urban Negativism” and will be released in digipack format jointly by Art of Propaganda and Talheim Records.  Due to hit the streets on the 6th of April,  it is anticipated that a vinyl version will appear later in the year.

SWEDEN’S VANHELGA GOES OLD-SCHOOL WITH TAPE RELEASE

Sweden’s VANHELGA are set to release their second full-length album on tape later this year.  Originally released in 2012, the tape version of “Höst” will be available on the Noxo label in two limited edition versions.  Ten copies will appear on black cassettes whilst forty copies will be available in normal jewel cases.  Track listing for the tape edition of “Höst” as follows:

Playing Black Metal with a definite DSBM feel in both sound and lyrical content, VANHELGA recently had their Facebook page shut down due to the penchant of their fans for sending and posting photos of the result of their self-harming.  Commenting on the situation, Ottosson had this to say:  “It’s quite ironic that Facebook is more than happy to allow photos of decapitations and torture, and tolerates all kinds of hate speech because they are “politically relevant”,  but does not allow individuals to express their personal despair, in an environment that allows them to share their experiences with others like themselves and not be made to feel isolated or judged.  Obviously the loss of the page, especially since we had spent a great deal of time and effort to build it up,  has serious knock on effects not just for the band, but also for the labels and others who work with us, but it’s one of those things that happen.  We are not the first and we won’t be the last that this has happened to, and we will just have to start all over again”. As 145188 explains, this was not an album that was planned, but rather one that resulted from a particularly black period he recently went through. ” This creation is the result of me being hospitalized for a long period of time under a Swedish law called “LPT” – hence the name of the album itself.  I had no freedom at all and the only thing present day in and day out was abject misery and silence.  I was, however, lucky enough to have been given access to a laptop and I was therefore able to create all the lyrics, music and artwork for “LPT” during this period of isolation.  All I can say is this; if you want to get a feeling of the anxiety, misery, depression and pain that comes from being locked inside a psychiatric ward,  then listen to this piece of art.”

VANHELGA EXPLAIN CONCEPT BEHIND UPCOMING SWEDISH TOUR

Swedish Depressive Black Metallers VANHELGA have explained the concept behind their upcoming tour in their home country later this month which they will undertake along with KALL and HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY.  “It is”, says founder and bassist J Ottoson, ” a rather unique event in which we use music to portray the grey, and on occasion, somewhat miserable everyday existence of the average Swede.  Having said that, we can assure the fans that the shows themselves will be far from being grey experiences, but  we have always found it interesting that other nationalities believe that the Swedish people are gloomier and more reclusive than others, and we thought that it would be interesting to explore this phenomenon further in front of Swedish audiences.  We have called the tour ‘Svensk Uppgivenhet’, which is a classic phrase meaning “Swedish Melancholy”, or as some prefer to call it “Swedish Resignation”.

Formed in Linköping, Sweden, in 2001 by musicians looking for an outlet for their own expression and creativity rather than having to perform other people’s music, VANHELGA’s distinctive, and at times unsettling, sound  straddles the divide between the Black Metal and DSBM genres.  Today’s lineup includes founder J.
