Five years after the release of their last album “Smorgasbord”, Karisma Records is set to release the fourth full-length album from Prog Rockers BRIMSTONE, who have not only shortened their name from THE BRIMSTONE SOLAR RADIATION BAND, but have also changed their sound to become “leaner, meaner, hungrier, and much more proggie” than before.   The new album, which is titled “Mannsverk”, will hit the streets on the 24th March in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats.  Track listing for “Mannsverk” as follows:

1. A Norwegian Requiem
2. Rubberlegged Man
3. Voodoo
4. Flapping Lips at Ankle Height
5. The Fixed Wheel
6. The Giant Fire
7. Sjø & Land
8. This is the Universe

Formed in Bergen, Norway, in the late ’90’s by guitarist and vocalist Rolf Edvardsen and bassist Truls “Biff” Eriksen who, wanting something different from the pop and metal of their previous bands, turned to psychedelic progressive music as epitomised by bands such as KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD and 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS.  Joined by two brothers Thomas and Øyvind Grønner on drums and organ/guitar, respectively, BRIMSTONE married high quality song writing to high energy live performances  and quickly became much in demand on the underground psychedelic /prog network, both at home and abroad, thanks to their own special brand of “prog-a-delic space rock”. Under their original name of THE BRIMSTONE SOLAR RADIATION BAND, they released the “Going Out” EP in 2002, followed by the full-length albums “Solar Radiation Band” in 2004, the country- tinged “Solstice” in 2005, and their first release on Karisma Records, the multi-instrumental “Smorgasbord”, in 2009.

“Mannsverk” finds the lineup back as the original  4-piece  and recording in their own studio, using original vintage equipment  to enable them to get the exact sound they want.  A sound that includes the use of instruments as varied as flutes, saxophones, accordions and violins, as well as vocal choirs, to create a strong late 60’s/early 70’s vibe.  With many of the songs coming in at between six and twelve minutes, BRIMSTONE have used their considerable musical skill to avoid the trap of boring solos and fruitless jamming – effortlessly fusing Biff’s thundering bass lines with Thomas Grønner’s relentless jazz- grooves, whilst Rolf Edvardsen’s vocals and guitar fit perfectly with  Øyvind Grønner’s arsenal of organs, pianos, mellotrons and synthesizers.

BRIMSTONE will launch “Mannsverk” with a show at Det Akademiske Kvarter in Bergen on the 28th March.  More information about BRIMSTONE can be found on the band’s website at http://brimstone.no

February 28th sees TROLLFEST release a digital single from their upcoming sixth full-length album “Kaptein Kaos”.  The single, titled “Ave Maria”, recounts one of the adventures that befall the time-travelling hero of the album Kaptein Kaos, who ends up in Jerusalem during his travels and meets an attractive, and very willing, young maiden who he seduces with a song. Nine months later, and with the eponymous hero long gone, the maiden finds herself in somewhat of a tricky situation, especially as she lives in a puritan village, so she explains that her child was “sent from God”.  As with the album, artwork for “Ave Maria” is by the Swedish cartoonist Jonas Darnell and designer Terje Johnsen. “Ave Maria”  will be available on NoiseArt Records from all the usual digital distributors including:

iTunes:  https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ave-maria-single/id820311150?uo=4

“Kaptein Kaos” itself (about which KORPIKLAANI’S Jonne Järvelä, says: “Trollfest are even more catchy, more melodic and more twisted than ever… I really like its (good way) sick arrangements and instrumentation…I never heard anything like this before…Unbelievable album!”), will hit the streets on the 28th March in Europe and the 8th of April in North America. The album marks a slight change in musical direction for the Norwegians who describe themselves as the pioneers of  “True Norwegian Balkan Metal”, and whose lyrics are written and sung in “Trollspråk”, a language of their own devising and which is spoken in the fantasy world of eccentric and fun-loving Trolls that the band have created.  Rock grooves and rich melody lines have joined the blast beats, and TROLLFEST’s trademark Eastern European influences have been expanded to include Tango rhythms, and Asian and Scandinavian folk music. Track list for “Kaptein Kaos” is as follows:

1.  Trolltramp
2.  Kaptein Kaos
3.  Vulkan
4.  Ave Maria
5.  Filzlaus Verkündiger

8.  Solskinnsmedisin
9.  Troll Gegen Mann
10. Sagn Om Stein
11. Renkespill
12. Kinesisk Alkymi
13. Døden banker på

In April TROLLFEST will embark on a 16 date headlining tour of Europe, which the band have dubbed the “Kaos Over Europe Tour”,  to promote the album.  Supporting will be  FINSTERFORST and CRYPTIC FOREST.  Routing as follows:

When MONDVOLLAND was formed in 2006, the musical emphasis was firmly orientated towards folk, but now, with two releases behind them and the completion of their sophomore full-length album, the band has very clearly developed and expanded its sound and direction to become an atypical Black Metal band that occasionally nods in the direction of avant-garde and post metal, but  whose melodies are clearly defined and whose sound is immediate and accessible.  Add to that vocals that are a mix of screams, deep grunts and varying styles of clean vocals, and you have a band that moves seamlessly and expertly through a number of extreme metal genres.

The new  seven-track album, for which a label is currently being sought,  will be called “Kwade Vaart” and was recorded at the E-Sound Studios by Asher de Vries (FLUISTERAARS), while mixing and mastering is by MONDVOLLAND bassist/vocalist Mickeal.   The title is the modern Dutch equivalent of “quade vaert”, which translated means “wicked” or “evil”  journey”, and is inspired by local folk stories that explore the subjects of poisoning, death in battle, fratricide and witch hunts.  The band’s name itself  is taken from the Dutch “mond volland”, meaning “mouth full of earth”, and comes from a local folk story that recounts how giants created the hills of Montferland in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands, the home of the  band’s original founders.

“Kwade Vaart” will be the third release from MONDVOLLAND, whose lineup comprises Mickeal  (session live musician in HEIDEVOLK, APOPHYS, SEMISTEREO) on bass and vocals,  MJWW  (WEDERGANGER) on guitar and  vocals,  Nico on drums and Bauke (AM TUAT) on guitar. The band’s first full-length album, “d’Olde Roop”,  appeared on Apollon Records in 2010 and has since sold out.  This was followed in 2012 by the 3-track EP “Pestvogel”,  in both digital and CD format.

MONDVOLLAND will also feature on an international musical project initiated by DRUDUKH’s Roman Sayenko which will be released on Season of Mist. The split vinyl release will contain exclusive and previously unreleased tracks from ten bands in all, including DRUDKH, PRIMORDIAL, KAMPFAR and WINTERFYLLETH amongst others.   Whilst some of the tracks are renditions of traditional songs from the bands’ respective countries, some are a personal exploration of  their own  heritages.   Titled “One and All, Together, For Home” the release date has been set for the 23rd May in Europe and 27th May in North America.  Additionally MONDVOLAND will be taking part in an upcoming project titled “Elemental Nightmares” (more information about which can be found at https://www.elemental-nightmares.com/

With a release date set for the 10th of March for the third full-length album from Norwegian Prog Rockers D’ACCORD, Dark Essence Records have today previewed the  track “Mr Moonglight” from the album.  Titled simply “D’AccorD III”  the nine-track album was recorded at the Cowshed Studio in London, which has seen the likes of THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH, JAMIE CALLUM, and BOY GEORGE pass through its doors.  Significantly, the fact that the studio is fully analogue means that D’ACCORD have been able to create an authentic  70’s sound, which has been further enhanced by the fact that each individual track was recorded on the first take and then mixed in analogue format at Fluid Mastering (DEEP PURPLE, ELVIS and JETHRO TULL) . The track  “Mr Moonlight” can be heard above and at http://soundcloud.com/karisma-records/daccord-mr-moonlight

Drawing inspiration from the ’70’s greats such as GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD and  JETHRO TULL, D’ACCORD was formed in Stord, Norway in 2008, and was off to a flying start, with the band’s self-released debut album getting a nomination for best 2009 Debut Album by Prog Awards.  Having  played extensively both at home and abroad, D’ACCORD have, over the years,  taken the best of 70’s Prog Rock and imbued it with their own style, bringing their sound firmly into the 21st Century. Today’s  lineup is comprised of charismatic frontman Daniel Maage (Vocals, Flute & various instruments), Årstein  (Bass), Fredrik Horn (Tangentar)and Stig Are Sund  (Guitar).

“D’AccorD III” differs greatly from the band’s massive conceptual sophomore album “Helike”, which was released on Karisma Records in 2011.  With “D’AccorD III”, the band has chosen to record tracks that are much shorter and more varied.  Alongside D’ACCORD’s signature 70’s Progressive influences and musical complexity is a more Rock ‘n Roll feel and a harder edge to the songs to produce a classic rock album filled with adventurous and progressive sounds.

Full track listing on  “D’AccorD III” is  as follows:

1. These Last Todays
2. Here Lies Greed
3. Lady Faboulus
4. Mr. Moonlight
5. Ibliss In Bliss
6. Song For Jethro
7. Mon – Sat: Part I
8. Mon – Sat: Part II
9. The Doom That Came To Sarnath (bonus track)

The 24th February sees Sweden’s VANHELGA release a digital single “Där Evigheten Inväntar Mig”, ahead of the release of the band’s sophomore full-length album “Längtan”.  “Där Evigheten Inväntar Mig”, which translated from the Swedish means “Where Eternity Awaits Me”, sets the tone for “Längtan”, which is scheduled for release in Europe on the 28th of April in CD format on the Art of Propaganda label, and in vinyl format on Carnal Records on a date as yet to be confirmed. “Där Evigheten Inväntar Mig” is available direct from VANHELGA on Bandcamp at http://vanhelga.bandcamp.com/album/d-r-evigheten-inv-ntar-mig

VANHELGA was formed in Linköping, Sweden in 2001 by J. Ottosson, aka 145188 (ex-LIFELOVER (live session musician), ex-SKOGSTRON), who, unable to create the kind of music he really wanted to, found a group of like-minded musicians and together they set about bringing their vision to life.   Aside from Ottosson on Bass, Guitars and Vocals, VANHELGA’s lineup consists of J. Gabrielson (ESKAPI, ex-LIVELOVER) on Vocals, J. Ejnarsson (TAKETH) and Wadström (ex-SKOGSTRON) on guitars and D. Franzén on drums.

Whilst it would be easy to classify VANHELGA as a Black Metal band, in reality that would be too restrictive a definition.  It’s true that lyrically the band explores the darker side of humanity, a subject much loved by the genre, indeed, the band’s name itself means “Profane”,  but within VANHELGA’s cold and sinister music can be found distinctive melodies and melancholic moments that lull you into a false sense of security and drag you into a dark reality.

VANHELGA have been confirmed to play a series of live dates in Germany in October alongside AGRYPNIE and HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. Routing as follows.

Wed 22:  Steinbruch Theater, Darmstadt
Fri 24:  From Hell, Erfurt
Sat 25:  K17, Berlin
Sun 26:  Bambi Galore, Hamburg

Black Metallers SLAGMAUR, who are currently finishing work on their latest album, have launched a new website.  Aside from the usual news and merchandise that you expect to find on websites, SLAGMAUR are also showcasing the art of frontman “Gribbsphiiser”, who is himself a professional photographer, and whose artwork is used to illustrate the band’s albums.  Limited editions of some of his artwork are also available to buy from the site, as well as the band’s entire discography, some items of which are now almost impossible to find elsewhere.  It is also anticipated that the whole of Nidrosian discography will be available in future. The new website can be found at http://storeulv.com/

Predominant amongst Gribbsphiiser’s disturbing images, are portrayals of the various characters that can be found in the new album, “Thill Smitts Terror”.  The album takes as its theme children’s nursery rhymes and fairy tales and gives them SLAGMAUR’s twisted treatment, which, coupled with the band’s sinister wall of sound, turns them into terrifying nightmares, which, it could be argued, are closer to the original stories than today’s sanitised versions could ever be.

SLAGMAUR was formed in the remote reaches of North Western Norway in 2006 by Gribbsphiiser, and the band has always remained secretive about their true identities, appearing on stage heavily disguised and in full costume, often as the characters in their songs. Aside from Gribbsphiiser on guitars, bass, cello and keys, the lineup on the album includes Åtselgribb on vocals and Dominaus Kracker, who hails from the band’s home island of Fosen, and has previously contributed to “Von Rov Shelter”,  as well as working on the production side of MARE, on drums.  Guest appearances by musicians from Fosen and Nidaros will also be featured.   A label is currently being sought.

The pre-production version of “Drummer of Tedworth” from “Thill Smitts Terror” can be heard on the player at the top of the page, and on the band’s SoundCloud page at http://soundcloud.com/slagmaur/slagmaur-the-drummer-of

Norwegian Black Metallers DEN SAAKALDTE entered the studio on the 17th February to begin recording their new album.  Titled  “Kapittel II: Faen i Helvete”, it will be the band’s sophomore full-length album and a follow up to their 2009 debut “All Hail Pessimism”.   Commenting on what the fans can expect from the new album, the band said that the material was “diverse, sick, (c)old and grim”.  “Kapittel II: Faen i Helvete” will be released on Agonia Records later this year.

Also in February, a double LP gatefold edition of “All Hail Pessimism” is set to appear on Agonia Records in a limited edition of 250 copies.  The first 50 copies will be pressed in deep purple vinyl, with the remaining 200 copies in black.  The band  also recently went “Old School” with two of DEN SAAKALDTE’s previous releases appearing on pro-tapes.  The 2008 demo “Øl, Mørke og Depresjon”  was released in a limited edition of 333 copies on the Italian label Bylec-Tum Productions and the “All Hail Pessimism” album was released on the Inferna Profundus label in a limited quantity of 150.

Formed originally as a one man project in 2006 by guitarist Sykelig, DEN SAAKALDTE recently announce the addition of frontman Einar “Eldur” Thorberg (FORTID, MIDNATTSVREDE, CURSE, ex-THULE)  to the lineup.  Aside from Sykelig on guitars and Eldur on vocals, the lineup also includes Andre Kvebek (PANTHEON I, ex 1349) on guitars, Seidemann (1349, ex-PANTHEON I) on bass, and Tybald (FORTID, ETHEREAL FOREST, HEATHEN DEITY) on drums.

DEN SAAKALDTE’s next appearance will be at Revolver in Oslo, Norway, on the 31 May, when they will be presenting the new album.  More information about DEN SAAKALDTE can be found at http://www.densaakaldte.org/

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS will field three of its bands for a ten-date European tour in May.  Along for what promises to be an epic programme of Extreme music are iconic Black Metallers TAAKE,  veteran Dark Metallers AETERNUS and SLEGEST, the new project from former VREID guitarist Ese.

Routing for the TAAKE, AETERNUS, SLEGEST May 2014 tour as follows:

Thu 08: Le Ferrailleur, Nantes, FR
Fri 09:  Le Divan du Monde, Paris, FR
Sat 10:  The Garage, London, UK
Sun 11:  Soundcontrol, Manchester, UK
Mon 12:  Ivory Blacks, Glasgow, Scotland
Tue 13: 013, Tilburg, NL
Wed 14: Club From Hell, Erfurt, DE
Thu 15: Rock It, Aalen, DE
Fri 16: Helvete, Oberhausen, DE
Sat 17: TBC

Formed in 1993, and having celebrated their 20th Anniversary last year with the release of “Gravkamre, Kroner og Troner”, a 20-song, 2 CD collection of rarities, TAAKE is a band that needs no introduction to any fan of Norwegian Black Metal, and founder Hoest’s  contribution to the genre is immense.  The epitome of what a Black Metal frontman should be, Hoest has remained true to his Black Metal roots, but at the same time he is constantly able to surprise his fans with his ability to breathe life and originality into a genre that is often mired in preconceptions .  More information about TAAKE at https://www.facebook.com/taakeofficial

Founded in 1993 by guitarist and frontman Ares, AETERNUS  is one of the pioneers of what the band calls “Dark Metal”, a genre that combines features from both Black Metal and Death Metal with superlative guitar playing and occasional haunting, melodic interludes.  AETERNUS re-emerged last year from a seven-year hiatus with, appropriately enough, the release of their seventh full-length album “…And The Seventh His Soul Detesteth”,  and a new line up that comprises Ares on guitars and vocals, Phobos (GRAVDAL, MALSAIN) on drums,  Specter (TORTORUM, ex GRAVDAL) on guitars and Eld (KRAKOW, VITHR, ISABELLA LEROY) on bass.  More information about AETERNUS can be found at https://www.facebook.com/Aeternusofficial

Following his departure from VREID, where he played guitar on four of the iconic band’s albums Ese formed SLEGEST in 2010, so whilst the band may be a relative newcomer compared to its tour-mates TAAKE and AETERNUS, its founder has a wealth of skill and experience to draw on.  Inspired by BLACK SABBATH, Ese uses harsh vocals to create a special blend of classic heavy rock and old-school black metal that is both dark and sinister whilst being propelled along by a down and dirty groove that is immediate and catchy and which earned last year’s debut album plaudits from critics and fans alike.   Aside from Ese on Vocals and Rhythm Guitars, SLEGEST’s live line up includes  Sør (BÄÄÄV, VONBRÅTEN) on Lead Guitars, Hövard (BOMBEKLÜCHTER)  on Bass and Fjøsne on Drums.  More information on SLEGEST at http://www.slegest.no/

After what seemed an interminable hiatus, Norwegian Black Metallers MIDNATTSVREDE are very much back in action, with live appearances scheduled,  a full-length album in progress and a new six-track digital mini album, “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree”,  released on the 10th of February via BandCamp.  “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree” includes a guest appearance by Vicotnik (DHG, VED BUENS ENDE, CODE), who will be performing vocals on MIDNATTSVREDE’s  cover of the VED BUENS ENDE track “Carrier of Wounds”, which Vicotnik himself wrote and which appears on VBE’s  “Those Who Caress the Pale” and “Written in Waters”.  The title track of the mini album is co-written with André Kvebek (DEN SAAKALDTE, PANTHEON I, ex 1349). The track ” Det Voldelige Rav” from the mini album “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree” can be heard on the player above. “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree” is available from http://midnattsvrede.bandcamp.com/

Track list on “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree” as follows:
1. Moulder of Them All
2. Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree
3. Beneath Dead Kings
4. I Nökkens Dyp
5. Det Voldelige Rav
6. Carrier of Wounds

Formed in 1994 by Jormundgand (DEN SAAKALDTE, LOVEPLANET, ex DHG), MIDNATTSVREDE remained active until 1997, when they released a self-titled demo.  The band remained in hiatus whilst Jormundgand concentrated on his other projects, but was brought back to life with the release of 2003’s “Demo”.  Aside from Jomundgand on drums, today’s lineup includes Kaahrl on vocals, Einar Thorberg (FORTID, DEN SAAKALDTE, CURSE, POTENTIAM, ex THULE) on guitars and  Ian Slemming (KRAANIUM) on bass.  According to the band, work is already well under way on what will be MIDNATTSVREDE’s first full-length album, and “Ripe Fruit on the Gallows Tree” will serve as a hint for what fans can expect.

MIDNATTSVREDE are confirmed to appear at the Hammerslag Vinterblot festival in Tonsberg on the 15th February, and at the Inferno Festival in Oslo on the 19th of April.  More information about MIDNATTSVREDE can be found at https://www.facebook.com/Midnattsvrede

9. The Doom That Came To Sarnath (bonus track)

Whilst  D’ACCORD’s 2011 sophomore album  “Helike” was a massive conceptual piece, this time the band has gone for much shorter and more varied tracks.  D’ACCORD’s signature 70’s Progressive influences and musical complexity are still present, but so too is a more Rock ‘n Roll feel and a harder edge to the songs.  As Karisma Records explained:  “The choice of analogue studios for both recording and mastering may seem unusual in this digital day and age, but the band wanted the album to have a more authentic ’70’s sound, so not only was analogue used, but each individual track was recorded on the first take.  The band’s decision has certainly paid off and with “D’AccorD III”  they have produced a classic rock album filled with adventurous and progressive sounds”.

Inspired by the great bands from the ’70’s such as GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD and  JETHRO TULL, D’ACCORD was formed in Stord, Norway in 2008.  With their self-released debut album getting a nomination for best 2009 Debut Album by Prog Awards, D’ACCORD have played extensively both at home and abroad, and have, over the years, honed their sound, taking the best of 70’s Prog Rock and bringing to it a fresh approach. Today’s  lineup is comprised of charismatic frontman Daniel Maage (Vocals, Flute & various instruments), Årstein “Yearstone” Tislevoll (Keyboards, Violin, Guitar, Mandolin), Fredrik Errol Horn (Keyboards & Saxophone), Martin Sjøen (Bass) and Bjarte Rossehaug (Drums), Stig Are S(o)und (Guitar).
