Skillfully fusing the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, Norwegian blackgazers AVAST are set to release their debut full-length album Mother Culture on October 26th through Dark Essence Records.

As a prelude to the release of Mother Culture, Dark Essence Records has released the title track as a single, which is available from and can be heard below and at https://avastband.bandcamp.com/track/mother-culture.

A
Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA),  Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums, AVAST is a band that reviewers and promoters place in a variety of genres. Whilst the band’s roots lie in punk rock and hardcore, it would be safe to say that blackgaze and post-black metal are genres that could be applied to AVAST, given that AVAST’s lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

The members of AVAST themselves describe Mother Culture as “a concept album that examines the myths upon which modern civilization is based”, and “an apocalyptic tale about the rise and fall of human civilization, and how we have exploited the Earth’s resources to such a degree that we are now standing on the brink of our own extinction. Musically the record borrows equally from the black metal and post-rock genres, and lyrically it draws inspiration from Daniel Quinn’s philosophical novel Ishmael.”

With artwork by Ole Nymoen, the track-listing for Mother Culture is as follows:

  1. Mother Culture
  2. The Myth
  3. Birth of Man
  4. The World Belongs to Man
  5. An Earnest Desire
  6. Man Belongs to the World

Slegest PR 2018

The release date for the “Introvert”, the new full-length album from SLEGEST has been set for the 16th November on Dark Essence Records.  Sounding more rock than ever, “Introvert”  will be the third studio outing for the Norwegians, and will comprise eight tracks guaranteed to please the fans of SLEGEST’s riff-laden music.

“Introvert” promises to be an album in which SLEGEST’s trademark sound  of black metal and classic heavy rock is well and truly defined.  The shades of the 80’s are more present than before, and the album is filled with great riffs, ensnaring hooks and a vicious catchiness. The title, on the other hand, reflects the material’s origin, as Slegest’s  frontman and main composer Ese explains:

“An introvert – a person who is predominantly interested in their own inner experiences. The album is born out of a mindset and lifestyle characterized by introversion. SLEGEST’s music has always fed on inner moods, feelings, nostalgia and heavy rock. Nevertheless, this inspiration from within has led to our most outgoing and in-your-face material ever! We are surpassing ourselves on this one, let it spin in the face of life itself!”

Bass and vocals for “Introvert”  were recorded in Systrond and engineered by Ese.  Drums and guitars were recorded at the  Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen with  Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen engineering the drums,  whilst the guitars were engineered by Herbrand Larsen, who also mixed the album.  Iver Sandøy handled the mastering.

With cover artwork by Anders Røkkum, “Introvert” will be available in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats.  Tracklisting is as follows:

1 Blodets Varme Gjennom Meg
2 Undergangens Tankesmed
3 Maler Lys I Mørketid
4 Da Brenne I Glåsi
5 I Den Sanne Flamme
6 Dødskyss
7 Leitar
8 Den Onde Sirkel

Kvalvaag PR6

With the 30th July set for the release on Dusktone of their third full-length album “Seid”, Norwegian Black Metallers KVALVAAG have today released a promo video for the track “Bergtatt” from the album.

As the band’s founder Kvalvaag explains,  the choice of “Bergtatt” was deliberate in that  “the track has a natural progression from our previous release, with a stronger focus on groove and atmosphere, rather than tempo.  It serves as  a nice indication of how KVALVAAG sounds in 2018 – trolls, forests and atmosphere all the way.  Sit back and let it drag you through the darkest pits of old Norwegian folklore and history”.

The video for “Bergtatt”, by Necrolust Productions  can be seen below and on YouTube at https://youtu.be/kHpLO7KClu4

A
KVALVAAG was formed in Oslo in 2012 as a project in which Øyvind “Kvalvaag” Kvalvågnes (ASTAROTH, VALGALDR, ATTENTAT), could immerse himself completely, each step of the way, from writing, to recording to performing.    Joined on drums by Telol (ASTAROTH, TROLL, SARPEDON), KVALVAAG proceeded to release two full-length albums before beginning work on “Seid”

Kvalvaag PR2

The album was written and partially recorded between the summer of 2016 and spring of 2017 at the KVALVAAG Studios by Kvalvaag himself on guitars, synth, bass and vocals. Drums were recorded at Studio Hemstad, and vocals at the Kvalsonic Lab. “Seid” was mixed and  mastered by Tom Kvålsvoll at the Kvalsonic Lab in Oslo.

With additional vocals by Rammr (RAGNAROK, ELVARHØI), and with artwork by Khaos Diktator Design, tracklisting for “Seid” is as follows:

  1. Mare
  2. Nattegrøde
  3. Bergtatt
  4. Volvesang Om Undergang
  5. Vinterriket (Gehenna cover)
  6. Seid
  7. I Dyrets Tegn

Kvalvaag Album Art 1

More aggressive but at the same time more diverse and unpredictable than its predecessors, “Seid” marks a considerable step in the development of the band, as Kvalvaag explains:

“When I started working on the new material, I wanted to surpass our previous work.  More time, effort and better equipment went into the process as compared to our earlier works.  The atmosphere is more or less the same, but there is a lot more going on at all times.

“We also received financial support from “Norsk fond for utøvende kunstnere”, which  gave us the ability to give the album the production it deserved.  It was inspiring to work with Tom Kvålsvoll as he is the man behind the sound of many of the albums we grew up with. He understood our vision and significantly raised the quality  of the album.

“I am really satisfied with both the end result and with our musical progression, and I feel we have successfully raised the bar this time”.

“Seid”, which will be available in Limited Edition 5″ Digipak CD, Digital, Vinyl and Limited Edition Red Vinyl formats is now available to  pre-order from https://dusktone.bandcamp.com/album/seid

Aeternus PR2018

Veteran Norwegian Dark Metallers AETERNUS have completed work on what will be the band’s eighth full-length album.  Titled “Heathen”,  the seven-track album was recorded at Bergen’s Conclave & Earshot studios and  produced by Herbrand Larsen, and  is set for release on Dark Essence Records later this year.

One of the pioneers of the “Dark Metal” genre, AETERNUS was formed in 1993 by guitarist and frontman Ares.  The band’s sound is one that combines features from both Black Metal and Death Metal, interspersed with haunting, melodic interludes, all topped off with skilled musicianship. Commenting on what fans can expect from “Heathen”, an album which will also mark AETERNUS’ 25th Anniversary, the band had this to say:

” We feel we’ve produced seven great songs for “Heathen”, all with AETERNUS’ trademark sound, which is a mix of complex extreme music along with heavy riffs and of course some great melodic features.  You could say that we are more than satisfied with the results”.

Aside from Ares, AETERNUS’ lineup is composed of Phobos (GRAVDAL) on drums and KRAKOW’s Eld on bass, and sharp-eyed fans will notice that guitarist Specter is missing.   As the band explains:

“Before having fully completed the composition part of “Heathen”,  Specter felt that he had little more to  offer the band, and that his long search for music was not only taking up too much of his own time, but it was also slowing down AETERNUS’ progress,  and as a result, he decided that it was best for all concerned that he quit the band.  He did however compose several terrific riffs which we  feel are outstanding, and they have been included in the album. We would like to thank Specter for all his work with AETERNUS, and wish him all the best  for the future.

“This of course means that once again AETERNUS has recorded an album where Ares’ considerable skills have been put to good use, and he has composed and played all the guitar leads on “Heathen”.  We’re sure that having read this, fans are wondering what is going to happen as far as live performances go.  No problem there! We have hired Gorm, from the Norse metal band THYRUZ, to play live with us, and he has been busy rehearsing our material. He will be more than ready when AETERNUS hits the stage again”.

COR SCORPII was Founded in 2004 as an offshoot of the legendary WINDIR.  Today’s  lineup of Gaute Refsnes on keyboards, Inge Jonny Lomheim on  bass guitars, accordion and programming, Ole M. Nordsve on drums, Rune Sjøthun on  rhythm guitars, mandolin and programming, and Thomas S. Øvstedal  on vocals,  and Erlend Nybø  on lead guitars draw their inspiration from classical music, folk melodies and the soundscapes of Nordic extreme metal.

A follow up to COR SCORPII’s critically acclaimed debut album “Monument”, which was released eight years ago, also on Dark Essence Records, “Ruin” is the result of a lengthy song writing process which proved, at times, to be quite  arduous for the band,  and gives its members an opportunity to reveal their  hidden talents by making use of instruments not usually used by metal bands, such as the accordion and mandolin.

Successfully blending epic, soaring melodies, with the harshness of extreme metal, “Ruin was recorded at various locations over a period of three years and was mixed by Børge Finstad in his Toproom Studio, and mastered by Tom Kvålsvoll at his Kvalsonic Lab.

With artwork by Novans V. Adikresna of the Marnov Studio,  and including featured guests such as the classical singer Annika Beinnes, as well as Mats Lerberg (I SWEAR DAMNATION, ex-FUNERAL) who lend their considerable vocal talents to three tracks each, tracklisting on “Ruin” is as follows:

  1. Svart Blod (Hovmod star for fall)
  2. Hjarteorm
  3. Skuggevandrar
  4. Fotefar
  5. Helveteskap
  6. Ri di Mare

Dark Essence Records has inked a deal with Blackgazers AVAST, which will see the label release the band’s debut full-length album in the Autumn.

Hailing from Stavanger, in Norway, AVAST is a band that reviewers and promoters place in a variety of genres, with Blackgaze and Post-Black Metal at the forefront.  But it could equally be said that the band’s roots lie in Punk Rock and Hardcore, given that AVAST’s lyrics are not centred around the usual Black Metal themes, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on Social and Environmental issues.

Whichever genre you’d like to put them in, there is, however, absolutely no doubt that AVAST’s lineup of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals Trond Salte (AGENDA) on guitars  and  Ørjan Lund (NAG) on drums,  skilfully fuses the aesthetics of Black Metal with the atmospherics of Post-Rock to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing.

Having previoiusly released a two-track EP in 2016, AVAST have spent the past year in the recording studios working on their new album “Mother Culture”, a concept album that examines the myths upon which modern civilization is based.  It is a work that addresses the potential for a global catastrophe, and is based on the philosophical novel “Ishmael” by Daniel Quinn.

With the 8th June set for the release of “In Chaos Becrowned”,  the debut full-length album from Norwegian Occult Hard Rockers ACÂRASH, Dark Essence Records have given fans a taste of what to expect by revealing the opening track ” Cadaver Dei”, about which the band has this to say:

Cadaver Dei” is our way of welcoming you to the tomb of ACÂRASH. The track is a celebration of the free spirit and the will to rebel against all that reduces life. To us the concept of opposition is an essential philosophical theme, acknowledging spiritual contradictions and human mortality. True opposition is a progressive and noble act of thought.”

ACÂRASH, whose lineup comprises Sølve Sæther on drums, Lukas Paulsen on guitars and Anlov P. Mathiesen on bass and vocals, was formed in Oslo in the fall of 2016.  It is a lineup that embraces tradition and is able to take the varied influences its individual members have gleaned from being part of bands such as LONELY KAMEL, ZECTION8, FAUSTUS and DEEP REST,  in order to create a sound that is fresh and distinctly theirs.

By seamlessly blending hard rock, doom and black metal, ACÂRASH  creates  soundscapes in which esoteric poetry and ritualistic contemplation are central to the music.  And, with “In Chaos Becrowned”, the band  demonstrates a marked ability to reinvent, whilst at the same time  preserve, in order to deliver a record that explores and develops the boundaries of rock and metal, and naturally alternates between raw catchiness, dark introspection, and progressive playfulness.

Mixed and mastered by Ruben Willem at the Caliban Studios in Oslo,  and with artwork by Lasse Almqvist Scherven, tracklisting for “In Chaos Becrowned”, which will be released in Digi CD and LP formats, is as follows:

  1. Cadaver Dei
  2. Shadows Roam
  3. Gathering of Crows
  4. In Chaos Becrowned
  5. Ashes of the Mortal Mind
  6. Legio Obscura

Taake European Tour 2018PR

Having kicked off the  25th Anniversary celebrations with a show in the band’s home town of Bergen,  TAAKE’s  iconic frontman and founder , Hoest,  has, over the years, honed the band’s trademark “Helnorsk Svartmetall ” sound  to perfection.  For a quarter of a century Hoest has always remained true to the spirit of Norwegian Black Metal, both in the studio and on the stage, and has never allowed  the icy, dangerous edge, much beloved by Black Metal fans, to stagnate, keeping it fresh with surprising twists and turns.

Hoest’s  powerful presence, which dominates any stage on which he sets foot, coupled with a live lineup of experienced and highly skilled musicians, and an  extensive back catalogue to draw from, has always ensured that  TAAKE’s performances are an experience that is guaranteed to enthral.

Aside from the upcoming European tour, TAAKE will be making a number of Festival and club appearances this year including Stockholm Slaughter in Sweden, Incineration Festival in the UK, Tuska Live in Finland, In Flammen Open Air in Germany, Beyond the Gates in Norway and the Colony Summer Fest in Italy.

TAAKE will also be heading for Japan to play a series of dates in July.  Routing as follows:

26 July:  Soma, Osaka,
27 July:  Imaike 3 Star, Nagoya
28 July:  Cyclone, Tokyo,
29 July:  Cyclone, Tokyo
