ALFAHANNE AND DARK ESSENCE RECORDS REVEAL THIRD GUEST AND ANNOUNCE FINAL “GUESS THE GUEST” COMPETITION IN RUN-UP TO ALBUM RELEASE

Over the past few weeks fans of Sweden’s ALFAHANNE have been having a bit of fun by entering a competition to win a copy of the band’s next album by guessing who the guests will be on the upcoming release. With two guests and two winners already announced, the band and their label, Dark Essence Records, have now announced that the third guest will be KVELERTAK frontman  Erlend Hjelvik (photo below).    He will be joining SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth, and SORHIN’s Nattursth on what will be the self-styled Alfapocalyptic Rockers’ sophomore full-length album, which is due for release in the Autumn.

With only one more guest left to announce, and one CD left to win, the clues to the final “Guess the Guest” competition are as follows:

1)  This guest is the vocalist for one of the top Finnish Black Metal bands which was originally formed in 1993

2) The meaning of the Finnish name of this guest’s band is “abyss”

3) When one of the early vocalists with this guest’s band left,  he became the musician that is known today as Satanic Warmaster’s Werwolf.

4)  This guest will be appearing at the Tuska Open Air Festival Pre-Party this year, fronting another of his bands, TURMION KÄTILÖT,  the day before Alfahanne themselves are due to appear at the festival

For those who were not already aware, ALFAHANNE, a band known for their interaction with fans,  together with their label Dark Essence Records,  have been running a “Guess the Guest” competition in the run up to the release of the band’s sophomore full-length album later this year.   With SHINING frontman NIKLAS KVARFORTH already announced as the first guest, the band and its label are ready to  announced that the second of four guest on the band’s upcoming sophomore full-length album will be NATTFURSTH from the iconic Swedish Black Metal band SORHIN (photo below).

“We really wanted to get the fans to join us in having some fun while we all wait for the new album” said the band.  “And from the feedback we’re getting, it seems the fans are really getting into it, which is great.  We knew Kvarforth would be easy to guess as we have worked together often, both live and in the studio, but we weren’t so sure about Nattfursth, who  is someone we’ve admired for a long time and were very excited to have work with us.  We  needn’t have been worried, and it’s a real tribute to his standing in the world of Black Metal that the entries to the competition started pouring in right away.  We think the next guest will be pretty easy to guess, so enjoy the guessing, and we look forward to receiving your entries”.

The clues for guest number three are as follows:

1)  This guest is the vocalist for a Norwegian band whose name means “stranglehold” or “chokehold”

2) The favourite animal of this guest’s band is the owl

3) The band loves owls so much that this guest has been known to appear on stage wearing an owl headdress

4) This guest’s band released their debut full-length album on Indie Recordings, before moving to Roadrunner Records for the release of their sophomore full-length

When ALFAHANNE and Dark Essence Records announced their first “Guess the Guest” competition recently they were pretty sure that the clues would be very easy for fans of the band.  And sure enough the entries poured in as fans guessed that the first guest on the band’s upcoming album would be none other than SHINING frontman and founder NIKLAS KVARFORTH.    An easy one to guess since Kvarforth had already worked with ALFAHANNE both in the studio and live, with his most recent collaboration with the band being a surprise appearance on stage with them at Incineration Festival  in London.

With three more guests to reveal, the second competition was launched today, and this time the clues might not seem as easy to many of their followers.  “This guest is someone we have admired for many years now, but he will probably be the most difficult one to guess.   However,  we’ve provided enough information so that with a little bit of research it shouldn’t be too hard to work out who it is” commented the band.  The clues are as follows:

1) This guest sings in a classic Swedish Black Metal band from Borlänge which started out in 1993 but is currently on hiatus.

2) This guest has released some classic Black Metal underground albums, one of them being “Apokalypsens ängel”

3) This guest’s band released their later albums on their own label Svartvintras Productions

4) In 2008 Norma Evangelium Diaboli released this guest’s box set Förbannade år 1993-2001.

When details of ALFAHANNE’s debut full-length album “Alfapokalyps” were revealed prior to the album’s release on Dark Essence Records early last year, many were surprised to find that the Swedish band, who at that time were relatively unknown,  had managed to attract guest appearances from artists such as TAAKE’s Hoest, SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth, and HELHEIM’s V’gandr.    But ALFAHANNE can claim a  lineup of musicians that have been on the Black Metal scene since the early ’90’s in bands such as VINTERLAND and early MAZE OF TORMENT , and their reputation for high octane live shows and their self-styled Alfapokalyptic Rock, which is a high energy mix of Black Metal, Classic Rock and Punk,  has since garnered them a legion of new fans throughout the world and proved to be more than enough to win the respect of other established musicians.

So much so, in fact, that the band’s sophomore full-length album, which is scheduled for release in September of this year, will include four special guests, and,  in keeping with the band’s policy of being accessible to their fans through Social Media, ALFAHANNE  have teamed up with DARK ESSENCE RECORDS to run a competition in the run-up to the release of the album.

“We really enjoy interacting with our fans, so we thought it would be fun to get them involved in guessing who the guests on our new album will be”, commented the band.  “Over the next weeks we will be featuring one of the guests and giving you a series of clues as to who it is.  Each guest is a stand-alone entry to the competition, so you have four chances of winning. The winners will receive a copy of our new album the minute it’s released , courtesy of Dark Essence Records!  Here are the clues to the first guest.  We thought we’d start off with a very easy one”.

1) This guest has a history of collaborations with Alfahanne, both in the studio and live.

2)  This guest started his current band whilst not yet a teenager  and it has been going for almost 20 years

3)  This guest is credited with starting the genre that many call “Suicidal”

4)  This guest’s  band and Alfahanne will both be appearing at Incineration Festival in London on the 9th May

THE 3RD ATTEMPT, THE NEW BAND FROM FORMER CARPATHIAN FOREST GUITARISTS, POSTS FIRST STUDIO REPORT WITH PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

Work on the debut full-length album  from THE 3RD ATTEMPT, which is set to be released on Dark Essence Records later this year,  is progressing at a very satisfactory pace.  The band entered the Sanden Studio in Kristiansand on the 17th April and they have posted the first in what will be a series of Studio Reports which will follow the progress of the album.   The first report, which includes videos of drummer Tybalt laying down the drum tracks, as well as a series of photos by guitarist Tchort,  can be seen at https://3rdattemptband.wordpress.com/

With the drum tracks now recorded, the next job will be to create a rough mix, ready for the guitars and bass to be recorded later this week.   Recording and producing the album is Endre Kirkesola, who is the band’s sound engineer in both the studio and live, and who has worked with bands such as BLOOD RED THRONE, CHROME DIVISION, URGEHAL, TSJUDER, GREEN CARNATION, CARPATHIAN FOREST and IMMORTAL.

Formed late last year by former CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort (GREEN CARNATION, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex EMPEROR, ex BLOOD RED THRONE) and BloodPervertor (APOSTASY, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex NEONGOD), THE 3RD ATTEMPT’s lineup includes Kaahrl Ødemark (ex- MIDNATTSVREDE, ex-NECROCAVE) on vocals  and  Tybalt (FORTID, DEN SAAKALDTE, ETHEREAL FOREST, ex- HEATHEN DEITY, ex-PANTHEON I) on drums.  With such a pedigree it was no surprise that the band found itself being  courted by various labels before eventually allowing themselves to be snapped up by Norway’s Dark Essence Records.

THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s  next live appearance will be at the Southern Discomfort Metal Festival, in Kristiansand, Norway, in September.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS SIGNS LUCIFER’S CHILD – THE NEW PROJECT FROM ROTTING CHRIST AND NIGHTFALL MEMBERS

Dark Essence Records, a label well known for working with some of the top Norwegian acts such as TAAKE, have cast their net a little further from their own shores this time, and signed Greece’s LUCIFER’s CHILD, the band formed by ROTTING CHRIST and former CHAOSTAR member George Emmanuel and NIGHTFALL’s Stathis Ridis.

Emmanuel and Ridis first formed the band in Athens, Greece,  in 2013, with the aim of performing the kind of music that would serve as a spiritual introduction to the atmospheric world of a Summoning.  LUCIFER’S CHILD sets out to create a unity between the music itself and the spiritual idea behind each song that they present to their audience, and, it is that  ritualistic energy, combined with the electrifying sound of Black Metal,  that characterises the band’s own sound.

Aside from George Emmanuel on guitars and Stathis Ridis on bass, LUCIFER’S CHILD’s lineup also includes Marios Dupont on vocals and Nick Vell on drums.   The band’s debut album “The Wiccan” was recorded during the summer of 2014 in Athens, and Dark Essence Records anticipate its release later this year.

THE 3RD ATTEMPT, THE NEW BAND FROM FORMER CARPATHIAN FOREST GUITARISTS, SET TO ENTER THE STUDIO IN APRIL

Former CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort and Bloodpervertor certainly hit the ground running when they formed their new band THE 3rd ATTEMPT.  In under a year they have managed to audition musicians and get themselves a fully rehearsed lineup which made its live debut at one of Norway’s biggest festivals,  sifted through a selection of offers from labels before settling on Dark Essence Records,  and have written and prepared all the material for their debut full-length album.

And,  April 17th will see them enter the Dub Studio in Oslo, to begin recording their new album with producer Endre Kirkesola, who has worked with bands such as BLOOD RED THRONE, CHROME DIVISION, URGEHAL, TSJUDER, GREEN CARNATION, CARPATHIAN FOREST.  Aside from working with some of Norway’s greats in the studio, Kirkesola is also THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s live sound engineer, a job he also performed for IMMORTAL.

“We are really looking forward to begin recording the album,” commented guitarist Tchort.  “The whole process of setting up the band and getting on stage for the first time with THE 3rd ATTEMPT has been a real boost, not just in terms of creativity, but also in terms of a renewed enthusiasm for performing.  It was a boost we had really been in dire need of over the past few years”.

TAAKE TO HEADLINE THE DARK ESSENCE RECORDS LABEL NIGHT AT INFERNO FESTIVAL IN A LINEUP THAT INCLUDES GALAR, KRAKOW AND MOMENTUM

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS will once again be showcasing some of its bands at Inferno Festival this year, with a lineup that includes TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM –  all bands who have recently released new albums on what is one of Norway’s most respected and growing labels.  The event will take place on Wednesday the 1st of April at Blå in Oslo, Norway.

For fans of  Norwegian Black Metal TAAKE needs no introduction.  After more than two decades of writing and performing his Helnorsk Svartmetall, frontman and founder Hoest still produces music which, whilst staying true to its roots,  manages to remain fresh, original and relevant in a genre that  is sadly lacking in all three attributes these days.    The band released its sixth full-length album  “Stridens hus” in December of last year, and proved once again that Hoest has lost none of his intensity and unpredictability, either in the studio or on the stage.

With their third full-length album “De gjenlevende” barely over a week old, GALAR is a Black-Folk Metal  band that is not scared to use non-traditional metal instruments including both a string quintet and a horn quartet.  These unusual elements are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album and to the band’s music in general. GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  Inferno Festival will be the first time fans will get a chance to see the new lineup on stage.

Formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005, and their third full-length album “amaran” released in February of this year, KRAKOW’s lineup of highly skilled and experienced musicians consists of Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR) on vocals and bass,  and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR) on drums.   The Experimental Post Rockers will be back on the Blå stage with their dark, melodic and mysterious music, perfectly performed with the band’s usual intensity and dynamism.

Making their DARK ESSENCE RECORDS debut at Inferno this year will be one of the label’s more recent signings, Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM, whose sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive” was also released in February.  MOMENTUM’s blend of atmospheric Post-Rock is reminiscent of Isis and Cult of Luna, with a Neurosis-esque level of bone-crushing heaviness interspersed with soft vocals and relaxed clean passages.  The band’s lineup consists of frontman Holaf, the man responsible for both MOMENTUM’s  lyrics and artwork, on vocals, bass and sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on guitar and vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on guitar and vocals.

THE 3RD ATTEMPT, THE NEW BAND FROM FORMER CARPATHIAN FOREST GUITARISTS, INKS DEAL WITH DARK ESSENCE RECORDS

When CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort and BloodPervertor announced last year that they were leaving to set up a new band, THE 3rd ATTEMPT, they knew that they were leaving behind them the security of  one of the most iconic Norwegian Black Metal bands of all time, and one with a huge following, to start something completely new and unproven,  at a time when labels are reluctant to dip their toes into uncharted territories and new bands emerge  in their hundreds every week, only to disappear into nothingness.   But when you have two musicians with the skill and experience of Tchort (GREEN CARNATION, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex EMPEROR, ex BLOOD RED THRONE) and BloodPervertor (APOSTASY, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex NEONGOD) who have the desire to work in an environment that could re-ignite the enthusiasm and creativity they felt they had lost, then a move was inevitable.  Interest from various labels was certainly not slow in materialising and today the band are pleased to be able to announce that they have inked a deal with one of Norway’s foremost labels, Dark Essence Records.

Commenting on their decision to sign with Dark Essence, the band had this to say: “Dark Essence signalled their interest in the possibility of working together as soon as we announced THE 3rd ATTEMPT, even before they had heard anything,  and they have kept in close touch, actually making the effort to attend rehearsals and get to know our new members.  In the end, it came down to a decision as to whether we wanted to sign with a large label and,  as a new band,  risk disappearing in the depth of their rosters, or whether we wanted to work with a label who was genuinely interested in us as a band, and who would be with us every step of the way, in all aspects.  We also heard many good things about Dark Essence from the musicians already signed to them, so, Dark Essence it is!  We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us with preparing and rehearsing the new material ready to enter the studio,  and we are excited to see what the future will bring”.

Dark Essence Records commented on the signing: “It takes a substantial label to be able to afford to sign a band like CARPATHIAN FOREST,  so when it was announced that Tchort and BloodPervertor were leaving and starting again from scratch with THE 3rd ATTEMPT, we were immediately interested in seeing what direction they would take, and opened a dialogue with them . We already knew what formidable musicians they were and what they were capable of, so Dark  Essence’s Kristine Knapskog went along to rehearsals to check out their new material.  She very much liked their enthusiasm and attitude, and their desire to work closely with a label and  we are very happy to welcome them to the Dark Essence family “.

Aside from Tchort and BloodPervertor, THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s lineup includes frontman Kaahrl Ødemark (ex- MIDNATTSVREDE, ex-NECROCAVE) who was selected following online auditions that drew in submissions from all over the world, and drummer Tybalt (FORTID, DEN SAAKALDTE, ETHEREAL FOREST, ex- HEATHEN DEITY, ex-PANTHEON I) who was originally slated to join the band as session live drummer for an upcoming appearance, but after taking part in rehearsals, it was decided that he would become a full-time member.

The 3rd ATTEMPT’s debut live  appearance will be at Blastfest, in Bergen,  Norway, on  the 18th February on  board the boat “Showline”, which will take fans on a 5 hour cruise of Bergen’s spectacular fjord,  and which kicks off the 4 day festival.

THE 3rd ATTEMPT recently debuted a demo track “The Beast Within”, which also features CARPATHIAN FOREST’s Daniel Vrangsinn on bass and Anders Kobro on drums, and which was  used in a shortened form for the  vocalist auditions.  It is not a “finished”  track.  “The Beast Within” can be heard below and on THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s SoundCloud page at   https://soundcloud.com/the-3rd-attempt/the-3rd-attempt-the-beast-within-demo-track

Having celebrated TAAKE’s 20th Anniversary last year with the release of “Gravkamre, Kroner og Troner”, a 20-song, 2 CD collection of rarities, the contribution that frontman and founder Hoest has made to the Black Metal scene, both in terms of recording and performing, is immeasurable.  Time has not stood still for a band that is not afraid to take risks, but which has always remained true to its roots.  Whilst many new Black Metal bands have steadfastly refused to move away from the generic formula that frequently risks sinking the whole genre into a sea of platitudes and unoriginality, TAAKE has shown that Black Metal is still very much alive, fresh, original and thriving.
