With their long-awaited sixth full-length album  “Monocle” having hit the streets on Dark Essence Records last month, Norway’s ATROX have today announced that long-time drummer, Tor Arne Helgesen, has decided to quit the band due to a lack of inspiration and the desire to pursue other interests, and that his place will be taken by Andreas Kjøl Berg.

Both the new and outgoing drummers, and the band have made the following statements for their fans:

Tor Arne:
” After 18 years I have decided to leave ATROX. This of course, is not without thought, but it’s a natural decision because of lack of inspiration on my part and it’s been like this for a while. The gang in ATROX are my brothers so this happens completely without drama.  They had seen the “writing on the wall” and were therefore not very surprised about my decision to call it a day. I’m proud to have been a part of ATROX’s history, a story that has been going on for 30 years! Andreas Kjøl Berg who takes over the drum seat in the band is a monster with sticks and will surely enrich ATROX in the future !! Now I will still be featured on various releases such as MANES, LETHE, amongst others, as a session musician, as well as a newly started project with Eivind (EoP). I wish ATROX all the best in the future and look forward to following the band as a fan! Viva ATROX 🙂 !!”

ATROX’s  guitar player Eivind explains:
“So after nearly 20 years Tor Arne has decided to close the ATROX chapter of his life. Everyone in ATROX wishes him nothing but happiness and success in any and all of his future endeavours.  At the same time we are really excited to announce ATROX’s new drummer, a “drum monster” by the name of Andreas Kjøl Berg. He’s been a friend to some of the ATROX members for years, and he plays for the band 22 amongst others. We’re sure he’s going to be the perfect fit, and considering his musical history and skills, I think he’s going to add a new and cool dimension to the ATROX sound”.

Andreas:
“Some eight years back I attended my first ATROX gig. I was blown away by the band, the musicality and the songs they had. I knew some of the guys from before and they were good guys.  I remember telling Rune F after the gig that if they ever found themselves in a situation where they needed a drummer, just ask. That’s how much I liked them. Then, 8 years later, in June this year, I was asked by Rune F to step in at a gig they had at ProgPower in the Netherlands, and I said yes right away. Then I got to know that Tor Arne quit and the drum throne was up for grabs. I grabbed the opportunity.

“I love the band’s two last albums (Binocular and Monocle) and I learned to love them even more after I got to learn and play the  songs. Tor Arne has written so many cool drum parts which are a joy to play. I try to find a combination between bringing my own style, but also respecting the part he wrote, and how I first  learned the songs. To sum it up, it’s great to have become a part of ATROX and I look forward to new music, gigs, laughs and tours”.

The departure is amicable and the band will continue to support their latest release Monocle with some gigs next year as well as working on new music for a new album.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass , and of course new drummer Andreas Kjøl Berg.

With *Monocle”,  their first album for over a decade set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 8th September, ATROX have today debuted the opening track from the album  in the form of a video by Snorre Hovdal of Dispenser Media.

According to the band,  Hovdal was chosen because of his previous work with two of the band members on their DRONTHEIM project, and he was given the song with the brief that it should be dark. More than satisfied with the result, ATROX felt that ” that’s what happens when small boys play with rocks…witches come in many sizes”.  The video is currently streaming exclusively at the following:

Lords of Metal (Netherlands): http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/nl/streams/view/id/626
Eternal Terror (Norway) https://eternal-terror.com/articles/index.php?id=1829&type=A

Spark Rock Magazine (czech republic) http://www.spark-roc kmagazine.cz/industrialove-atr ox-se-vraci-po-9-letech
Rock Tribune (Belgium), https://www.facebook.com/RockTribune/

About the track itself, the band had this to say: “The reason for us picking “Mass” for a video was due to the energy and structure of the song – which is aggressive and straight to the point.  It also represents the album well, giving you a vibe about what it’s all about; a darker side of us and how we’re observing the world around us”.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass, and with “Monocle” the band is  back stronger than ever.  The sound has been fine-tuned so that what was once an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal has become much more progressive, experimental and industrial.  It is an album that shows a darker side to the band, with more epic and atmospheric elements than before.  Consolidating the unique ATROX sound within the album are catchy and upbeat sections.

Artwork for “Monocle” is by Rune Folgerø and Erik Paulsen.  Tracklisting is as follows:

1. Mass
2. Vacuum
3. Heat
4. Finger
5. Suicide Days
6. For We Are Many
7. Movie
8. Target

Dark Essence Records have today announced details of the upcoming album from one of their latest signings, ATROX.  Set for release on the 8th September, and titled “Monocle”, this will be the sixth full-length studio album from the veteran Norwegians.

With “Monocle”, the first album from the band since 2008’s “Binocular”, ATROX are back stronger than ever, having fine tuned their sound so that what was once an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal has become much more progressive, experimental and industrial.  It is an album that shows a darker side to the band, with more epic and atmospheric elements than before.  Consolidating the unique ATROX sound within the album are catchy and upbeat sections.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass, and they recently had some very interesting things to say about “Monocle”:

“Monocle” is our darkest album so far. During the process of creating and recording it we explored, and were exposed to, our darker selves, and what we encountered during this process almost killed us.  It left us in a dystopian vacuum and all worn out, but with one hell of a piece of music to present to the world.

“Musically speaking “Monocle” contains poisons that’ll blind you, and poisons that’ll open your eyes.

“As William Gibson says in his novel  “Neuromancer“: “The future is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed.”

When KRAKOW announced that they would be performing a special show for their Dark Essence Records Label Night appearance at 2016’s Blastfest, nobody was really sure what the Post Rockers would pull out of the bag, including the band themselves, other than that it would involve an augmented lineup.

What transpired was a set that included lasers, electronics and two drum kits, with KRAKOW’s lineup of Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, GAAHLS WYRD, GRAVDAL) on vocals and bass and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR, HADES ALMIGHTY) on drums and vocals, being joined on stage by the band’s producer, and some-time session drummer, Iver Sandøy on keys and drums, Cato Olaisen, who drummed on the ‘diin’ album, and Rune Hals, on drums, whilst Ask moved between drums and vocals.

The set that this augmented line-up went on to perform, consisted of only 4 songs selected from the band’s three full-length albums “Monolith”, “diin” and “Amaran”. One of the tracks, “vitriol”, had never been performed live before, whilst the remaining three took on a whole different aspect, close to their true expression, but with new nuances and added shading, bending and distorting in ways that even KRAKOW itself did not know ahead of time.

So successful was the event that KRAKOW and Dark Essence Records have now decided to release the session in digital format. Titled, appropriately enough, “Alive” and with artwork by Thomas Hooper, track listing is as follows:

1. Monolith
2. Vitriol
3. Of Earth
4. Mound

Norway’s Dark Essence Records have added another string to their rapidly growing bow by inking a deal with Norwegian veterans ATROX, and are set to release the band’s fifth full length album “Monocle” on a date as yet to be announced.

Commenting on joining Dark Essence’s roster, and giving fans an insight into what they should expect from the result of ATROX’s return to the studio after  an eight year break, the band had this to say:

“It’s finally happening, the moment we all have been waiting for, the moment when all the hard work finally pays off… We’re proud to announce that we have joined forces with Dark Essence Records, and together we will release our next album “Monocle”.

As William Gibson says in his novel  “Neuromancer“: “The future is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed.”

Formed in Trondheim, Norway, in  1988 the band was originally called Suffocation, but for obvious reasons the name was changed to ATROX in 1990.  Having spent their first years playing an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal, recording demos and honing their live skills, ATROX’s first release was the 1996 7” “Silence of Echoes”,  which was followed by a further four full length albums and numerous live appearances including several tours and festivals.

Today’s lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass plays what they like to call “Schizo” Metal, which differs from their original sound, being more melodic and with an experimental/avant-garde edge.

Avant-garde Metallers VULTURE INDUSTRIES and fellow Norwegian Experimental Black/Death Metallers SULPHUR have banded together to perform a series of dates later this month.   Going by the name of “The Tower Falls Tour”, a reference to VULTURE INDUSTRIES last album “The Tower”, the tour  will kick off with both bands appearing at the Phantoms of Pilsen Festival in the Czech Republic, before moving on to Germany,  Hungary and Romania for six further shows.  Routing as follows:

21 Oct: Phantoms Of Pilsen, Pilsen (CZ)
22 Oct:  Festung, Bitterfeld (DE)
27 Oct:  Supersonic,  Budapest (HUN)
28 Oct:  Casa de Cultura Studentilor,  Craiove (RO)
29 Oct:  Club Fabrica, Bucharest (RO)
30 Oct:  Rock ‘N’ Iasi, Iasi (RO)
31 Oct:  Daos Club, Timisoara, (RO)

With over a decade’s worth of live appearances, superb technical skills, and one of the most eccentric frontmen around in the shape of Bjørnar E. Nilsen, VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ highly theatrical on-stage performances never fail to earn the band scores of new followers wherever they play.  Add to that  three critically acclaimed albums and a series of collaborations in the fields of performance art and video, and you get a band that is always exciting and always has a surprise or two in store for their audience.

With a lineup that includes current and former members of bands such as GORGOROTH, ENSLAVED, AETERNUS and VULTURE INDUSTRIES, there is little doubt that SULPHUR has a pedigree that will ensure that fans coming to see the band live on stage will not be disappointed.  “Omens of Doom”, SULPHUR’s second full-length album was released on Dark Essence Records earlier this year, and has garnered universal praise from fans and critics alike.

Virus PR4

With the release date coming ever closer,  Karisma Records have debuted a track from VIRUS’  fourth full-length album “Memento Collider”.  The track, “Steamer” , which is being debuted exclusively on Metal Hammer Norway at http://hammer.kenspo.net/?p=4126 and Decibel Magazine at http://decibelmagazine.com/blog/2016/4/18/virus-premiere

Undoubtedly one of the most unique bands to come out of Norway, VIRUS have, for over a decade now, developed their otherworldly style and garnered themselves a large following that spans both the metal and rock scene world-wide.  “Memento Collider” heralds VIRUS’ return to their original 3-piece lineup of Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide on guitars and vocals, Petter “Plenum” Berntsen on bass and Einar “Einz” Sjursø on drums.  This time the iconic trio have taken VIRUS’ idiosyncratic trademark sound of unusual flowing bass lines, experimental riffs and groovy rhythms a few steps further,  to create a sound that is still very much experimental and progressive in the true sense of those definitions, but at the same time is catchy and melodic.

Set for release on the 3rd June and recorded at the Amper Tone Studios in Oslo, “Memento Collider” marks a spectacular return for VIRUS, where they once again demonstrate what the true essence of progressive rock is all about!

As with their  previous releases, VIRUS have invited a guest to perform on the  album, and on “Memento Collider” it is VOIVOD’s  Dan Mongrain who contributes a guitar solo.  Artwork for the album is by the Trine + Kim Design Studio (http://www.trineogkim.no/ ).  Track listing as follows:

  1. Afield
  2. Rogue Fossil
  3. Dripping Into Orbit
  4. Steamer
  5. Gravity Seeker
  6. Phantom Oil Slick

The 3rd June has been set as the release date for “Memento Collider”, the fourth full-length album from Experimental Hard Rockers VIRUS.   The album, with cover art by the Trine + Kim Design Studio (http://www.trineogkim.no/ ), will appear on Karisma Records, who recently signed the band.

Whilst no further details about “Memento Collider” are currently available, the self-styled  wayward Norwegian trio will give fans a taste of what is to come at Blastfest in Bergen on the 18th February, where they will showcase several tracks from the album.

VIRUS rose from the ashes of 90’s avant-garde black metal project VED BUENS ENDE in 2000 when  guitarist and vocalist Carl “Czral” Michael Eide had the idea of creating a new kind of experimental metal / rock.  Together with bassist Petter “Plenum” Berntsen and drummer Einar “Einz” Sjursø they released their first, and only,  demo that same year.  Three full-length studio albums followed, together with tours in Europe and the USA and a plethora of festival appearances.
