This is probably the darkest and most brutal album we’ve ever made! It’s also the most honest work ever from my perspective.

So says CREST OF DARKNESS founder Ingar Amlien about “The God of Flesh”, the ninth full-length album from the Norwegian Black Metal veterans.

Set for release on the 25th October on My Kingdom Music, “The God of Flesh” promises nine tracks filled with CREST OF DARKNESS’  trademark Satanic themes. But this time the band has expanded the feel, variety and depth of their music, showing them to be as much at home with more progressive and melodic elements, as they are  the with the aggressive and dark brutal side, for which they are known.

Recorded  and mixed at the MLP Studio and Engineered by Nils H. Mæhlum,  with guitars being recorded at Attic 43 and engineered by Rebo, “The God of Flesh” was produced by Crest of Darkness and mastered  at the Kvålsonic Lab by Tom Kvålsvoll.

With all lyrics by Amlien and music by Amlien, Rebo and Bernhard, except for the track “Forgotten” where Amlien joins forces with the album’s session keyboardist Kristian Wentzel, and with cover art by  Marius Engli Andersson, track listing for “The God of Flesh” is as follows:

1. The God of Flesh
2. The Child with no Head
3. Endless Night
4. The Spawn of Seth
5. Forgotten
6. Euthanasia
7. Blood
8. Godless Evil Eyes
9. Salvation in Hell

Seeking an outlet for his passion for sonic brutality and his interest in Vampirism and Satanic ideology, on which he is an acknowledged expert, Amlien  formed CREST OF DARKNESS in the mid nineties.  The band today,  which Amlien considers to be the strongest lineup to date, consists of Amlien (CONCEPTION, ROQUEFIRE, AMLIEN’s INFERNO) on Bass and Vocals, Rebo on Rhythm and Lead Guitars, and Berhard (ex- PALE FOREST) on drums.

Of  the new album and the contribution made by his band mates, Amlien  had this to say:

During the whole production of the album I was thinking that now, more than ever before, I wanted to make an album my way!  And, as a result, we haven’t made any compromises whatsoever, in any direction.  And I’m very fortunate to be able to say that I was not alone during the whole process. With the help of my fantastic band mates Rebo and Bernhard, it became possible to bring my darkest fantasies and visions to life through “The God of Flesh”

Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS, whose founder and frontman Ingar Amlien is an acknowledged expert on Vampirism and the Occult, and who is often called upon by the Norwegian media to comment on such matters, are celebrating Halloween with the release of a lyric video for the track “The Noble Art”.

The video, directed and edited by Goffredo Passi for EstremArte videoproduzioni, features the  extraordinary zombie foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/mzwd_AWw8jY

Released in December 2016 on My Kingdom Music, “Welcome the Dead” is the perfect illustration of the kind of wide-ranging appeal that CREST OF DARKNESS has built for itself over the years, with a sound that encompasses the Black, Death and Metal genres.  It is, according to Amlien, an album that has special significance for him personally, having put a lot of himself and his deepest emotions into creating an album that reflects the kind of ritualistic atmosphere that pervades the band’s live performances.

CREST OF DARKNESS’ lineup of  Ingar Amlien (CONCEPTION, ROQUEFIRE,  AMLIEN’s INFERNO) on bass and vocals, Rebo on guitars, Bernhard (ex- PALE FOREST) on drums are now working on what will be their eighth full-length album, and more information about the band can be found at http://www.facebook.com/crestofdarknessofficial

With the their seventh full-length album “Welcome the Dead” released at the end of last year, and earning plaudits from fans and critics alike, veteran Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have uploaded a new video for a track from the album to their YouTube channel.   The track chosen for this video is “My Black Bride” which makes this a particularly unusual choice for the band, not only because it is an instrumental, something the band has only recorded on two occasions over the years, but it is also a melodic, deeply atmospheric piece, totally different from the band’s usual Black/Death/Metal sound.   The reasons for creating such an “out of character” piece are quite fascinating, and are explained below by the band’s founder and frontman  Ingar Amlien (CONCPTION, ROQUEFIRE,  AMLIEN’s INFERNO).  The video itself can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/niPFDtJgpC4

According to Amlien “My Black Bride” was written for his wife Laila, who wore a black wedding dress when the couple married over ten years ago.    “I had wanted to write a special song for Laila for a long time.  She has supported me and my work for so many years, and without her I really don’t know where I would be today, and I  knew right from the start that if I was to create this piece it would have to be totally honest.  Something personal, and not the kind of rose-tinted love song that people tend to expect when you write a song dedicated to the love of your life.

“I tried to capture the feeling of romance and happiness, but at the same time I wanted to touch on something more “forbidden” – the dark side if you like to think of it like that.  Like most couples we have been through many experiences in the time we’ve shared together, both good and bad. But, unlike most couples, my work has always involved being “in touch” with both Life and Death, something  Laila has always been very aware of, so the difficult times take on a darker significance.

“I also knew that this song had to be an instrumental because words could not possibly express what I was trying to communicate with this song.  I played the guitars myself – I felt I had to as these few notes I’m playing are so extremely personal.   To the listener the song may sound like a simple, stripped down piece of music, which is what I intended it to be, but it comes from the depth of my heart ands contains many small details that someone outside of the relationship I have with my wife cannot understand.  It’s a heartbreaking piece, but as with all my music, there is something deeper behind it.  There is my belief that inside all of us there burns a black flame – that special will to survive”.

The video itself was created and edited by Francesco Palumbo at MKM Graphix, using images from the Cappuccin Catacombs in Palermo, Italy, and, given that “My Black Bride” is essentially a romantic piece, the choice of such macabre images might seem strange.  “When I first saw the video I almost choked” admitted Amlien.  “The images were right for CREST OF DARKNESS, but I was a little taken aback at first.  However, the more I looked at it, the more I realised that they were, in fact, perfect”.

“Welcome the Dead” was released on My Kingdom Music in both CD and Digital formats at the end of last year.  A double LP format, which will feature a special bonus track, will be released shortly in collaboration with Metal Age Productions, Kristallblut Records and Supreme Music Creations.  Artwork for the album features  the strange and disturbing Zombie Foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi.

The Norwegian actor Espen Reboli Bjerke, well known for his extensive work in films, theatre, radio and Television is making a guest appearance on “Welcome the Dead”, the seventh full-length album from Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS.  Bjerke, who also won a Spelleman Award, the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammies,  will perform a spoken part on “Katharsis”,  the closing track on the album.

“We really needed someone with a great vocal presence to do the spoken part on one of the tracks, someone who is able to convey the atmosphere”, explained CREST OF DARKNESS founder and frontman Ingar Amlien, “and as far as I was concerned Espen was perfect.  I was delighted when he agreed to do it, it’s never easy to get actors of his standing to agree to perform on a music album.  Of course it did help a bit that he is the brother of our guitarist Rebo!”

“Welcome the Dead”, is set to hit the streets on the 2nd December on My Kingdom Music  in both CD and Digital formats, as well as a double LP format which will feature a special bonus track.   It was recorded at the at MLP Studio by Nils H. Mæhlum, and mastered at the Kvålsonic Lab by Tom Kvålsvoll.   The  album promises to be the heaviest, darkest and most introspective work to emerge from the band’s twenty plus year history and the artwork reflects this, using, as it does, the eerie Zombie Foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi.

Aside from Amlien (ROQUEFIRE, CONCEPTION, AMLIEN’s INFERNO) on vocals and bass and  Rebo on guitars CREST OF DARKNESS’ lineup includes Bernhard (ex- PALE FOREST) on drums, and Kristian Wentzel on keyboards.  Earlier this year Amlien admitted that he sees “Welcome the Dead” as having a special significance for him personally: ” I’ve put a hell of a lot of myself and my emotions  into this album, even more so than usual.  I’ve always felt that when we are on stage, we create a sort of magic, and this time we have been able to transfer that magic to the recordings.  You could say this is my personal Black Mass”.

Tracklisting as follows:

1. Welcome The Dead
2. Chosen By The Devil
3. Scourged And Crucified
4. My Black Bride
5. Borrowed Life
6. The Almighty
7. Memento Mori
8. The Noble Art
9. Katharsis

On Saturday 29th October Amlien will give a special performance at the Underjordisk Festival in Gjøvik.    The festival is closely linked with Halloween, and Amlien will take to the stage at midnight whenhe will perform a solo set called “Drink My Blood”, which will include music that is part of a bonus track which will be included on the vinyl edition of “Welcome the Dead”.   Amlien says that the audience should expect a sort of “bloody, horror kind of performance… like a ritual” and knowing the musicians interest in all things vampire and satanic, it’s safe to say that it will be very appropriate to the celebration of Halloween.
