For the many fans of HADES ALMIGHTY the long wait is finally over as the band is set to release a new EP, the first studio release from the band since 2001.  The three-track Digi EP, titled “Pyre Era, Black!” will hit the streets on Dark Essence Records on the 23 October and serves as an introduction to a new era for the legendary Norwegian band, as well as a taste of what to expect from  what will be the band’s fifth full-length album which is due for release next year.

Photography for the artwork for “Pyre Era, Black!” is by Christian Misje.  Track listing as follows:

1.  Pyre Era, Black!
2. Funeral Storm
3. Bound

Last year it was announced that founding member and vocalist/bassist Janto was quitting the band on the best of terms, and that co-founders,  guitarist Jorn (ex-DOMINANZ, ex-OLD FUNERAL, ex-IMMORTAL, ex-AMPUTATION)  and drummer Remi,  would be searching for a replacement.  The replacement chosen  turned out to be no stranger to  black metal fans when it was revealed that Ask Ty (KAMPFAR, KRAKOW) would take on vocal duties  and that once again HADES ALMIGHTY would be making its mark as one of the great Norwegian Black Metal bands.

Originally formed in 1992 as HADES, the band changed their name to HADES ALMIGHTY in 1998 due to the pre-existence of a US band of the same name.  Things on the recording front have been quiet in the fourteen years since the release of HADES ALMIGHTY’s  fourth full-length album, “The Pulse of Decay”, but  the band itself has not let the grass grow too long under their feet by being relatively active on the live scene.  Nor, it would seem, have they lost any of their studio skills as “Pyre Era, Black!” amply demonstrates.

It is an EP that hints at the pitch black, epic sound that originally made HADES ALMIGHTY so unique, but with additional new elements, not least the outstanding vocals of their new frontman that give the character and depth fans have grown to expect from the band.  There are some who might have wondered how Ask Ty, well known for his drumming skills,  would be able to handle vocals, but this is not his first outing behind the microphone, having performed vocals both in the studio and live for KAMPFAR and KRAKOW,  and “Pyre Era, Black!” demonstrates just how versatile he is.

HADES ALMIGHTY’s first live appearance with the new lineup will take place in the Netherlands at the Aurora Infernalis festival in Arnhem on the 24th October,  followed by an appearance at Bergen’s Black Metal and Tattoo festival BlekkMetal in Bergen on the 13th November

TAAKE is one of the rare Black Metal bands that has continued to innovate and evolve over the years, without losing any of its original Norwegian Black Metal roots.  Hoest’s  unique brand of Helnorsk Svartmetall  translates perfectly to the live stage where the founder and frontman is acknowledged as one of the most dynamic and mesmerising performers around.  The current tour is in support of the band’s sixth full-length album “Stridens Hus”, which was released on Dark Essence Records at the end of last year.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS will once again be showcasing some of its bands at Inferno Festival this year, with a lineup that includes TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM –  all bands who have recently released new albums on what is one of Norway’s most respected and growing labels.  The event will take place on Wednesday the 1st of April at Blå in Oslo, Norway.

For fans of  Norwegian Black Metal TAAKE needs no introduction.  After more than two decades of writing and performing his Helnorsk Svartmetall, frontman and founder Hoest still produces music which, whilst staying true to its roots,  manages to remain fresh, original and relevant in a genre that  is sadly lacking in all three attributes these days.    The band released its sixth full-length album  “Stridens hus” in December of last year, and proved once again that Hoest has lost none of his intensity and unpredictability, either in the studio or on the stage.

More information about TAAKE can be found on the band’s Facebook page at

With their third full-length album “De gjenlevende” barely over a week old, GALAR is a Black-Folk Metal  band that is not scared to use non-traditional metal instruments including both a string quintet and a horn quartet.  These unusual elements are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album and to the band’s music in general. GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  Inferno Festival will be the first time fans will get a chance to see the new lineup on stage.

More information about GALAR can be found on the band’s Facebook page at

Formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005, and their third full-length album “amaran” released in February of this year, KRAKOW’s lineup of highly skilled and experienced musicians consists of Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR) on vocals and bass,  and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR) on drums.   The Experimental Post Rockers will be back on the Blå stage with their dark, melodic and mysterious music, perfectly performed with the band’s usual intensity and dynamism.

More information about KRAKOW can be found on the band’s Facebook page at

Making their DARK ESSENCE RECORDS debut at Inferno this year will be one of the label’s more recent signings, Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM, whose sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive” was also released in February.  MOMENTUM’s blend of atmospheric Post-Rock is reminiscent of Isis and Cult of Luna, with a Neurosis-esque level of bone-crushing heaviness interspersed with soft vocals and relaxed clean passages.  The band’s lineup consists of frontman Holaf, the man responsible for both MOMENTUM’s  lyrics and artwork, on vocals, bass and sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on guitar and vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on guitar and vocals.

Dark Essence Records have today debuted “luminauts”, the opening track from “amaran”, the third full-length album from Norwegian Experimental Post Metallers KRAKOW, which is due to hit the streets on both CD,  12″ vinyl and digital formats on the 9th of February.   “luminauts”, together with  the recently debuted track “atom” from “amaran”, can be heard at

With Thomas Hooper, one of America’s foremost tattoo artist, well known also for his paintings and designs, once again creating the artwork,  “amaran” is an album that sees KRAKOW exploring both the calmer side of their sound, as well as the more experimental, drone side.  Working with producer Iver Sandøy at Solslottet at the Duper Studio, KRAKOW have produced an album that is at times filled with dream-like soundscapes and at times with a harsh, sinister atmosphere.   Both Hooper and Sandøy also  worked with KRAKOW on their  2012 sophomore full-length album, the critically acclaimed “diin”.

Track listing for the seven-track “amaran” is as follows.

1. luminauts
2. atom
3. genesis
4. vitriol
5. pendulum
6. of earth
7. ten silent circles

KRAKOW was formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005, and today’s  lineup consists of highly skilled and experienced musicians with Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR) on vocals and bass,  and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR) on drums.   In comment made during the recording of “amaran”  KRAKOW had this to say:  ” The approach this time was in some ways different than during the “diin” sessions. We still record everything live as a band, but we wanted a bit more definition, less distortion, cleaner drums, more focus on the songs and melodies that lived within the compositions. The music is still dark, melodic and mysterious, but this time with a different angle”.

“amaran” is now available to pre-order from Dark Essence Records at

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS, one of the fastest growing Norwegian labels, both in reputation and size, will host a listening session at Bergen’s Beyond the Gates Festival where attendees will have the opportunity to be the first people to hear tracks from the upcoming albums from TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW, and the label’s new signing MOMENTUM.  The session will take place at the Garage, Bergen, on Saturday 30th August from 14:00 – 16:00.

Additionally, KRAKOW  will hit the stage at the Garage at 18:00 on Friday 29th to perform a set.

Commenting on the event, DARK ESSENCE’s Martin Kvam said: “Beyond the Gates is the ideal  setting for us to showcase what fans can expect from these great bands over the coming months.  Most people are already aware that we have new albums from GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM in our release schedule,  but we haven’t announced anything at all about the new TAAKE, so knowing that this one is coming up should be a welcome surprise for their fans.  We’re all very much looking forward to hearing everyone’s reaction to what they are going to be listening to on Saturday”.

Details of the “And Now For Something Completely Different Tour” with a four-band line of experimental/avant-garde bands headed by VIRUS have been announced today.  Joining the cult Norwegians will be fellow countrymen VULTURE INDUSTRIES and KRAKOW along with the MONDVOLLAND from the Netherlands.  Confirmed dates on the December tour as follows and anyone interested in booking the two remaining dates should contact

Fri 07 Dec:  Willemeen , Arnhem (NL)
Sat 08 Dec: Ferrailleur,  Nantes (FR)
Sun 09 Dec: Glazart,  Paris (FR)
Mon 10 Dec: Markthalle, Hamburg (DE)
Tue 11 Dec:  The Underworld,  London (UK)
Wed 12 Dec: TBC
Thu 13 Dec: Orto Bar,  Ljubljana (SLO)
Fri 14 Dec: Gaswerk Kulturzentrum, Winterthur (CH)
Sat 15 Dec: TBC

VIRUS was formed in 2000 by guitarist / singer Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide (AURA NOIR, former / founder member of ULVER, SATYRICON, DØDHEIMSGARD, CADAVER etc., along with bass player extraordinaire Petter “Plenum” Berntsen (AUDIOPAIN) and drummer Einar “Einz” Sjursø (LAMENTED SOULS, INFERNÖ,ex BEYOND DAWN), with the intention of taking key elements of Czral’s former avant-garde black metal band VED BUENS ENDE further into weirdness and farther from metal. Through three critically acclaimed album releases Czral’s unique dissonant guitar flavour and song writing has fascinated, puzzled and ensnared listeners worldwide, not least thanks to the live performances (as a 5-piece) the band have undertaken since early 2011, including  Sonisphere, Brutal Assault, Hole In The Sky, Aurora Infernalis etc.

VIRUS is also set to release a mini album to coincide with the tour.  Titled “Oblivion Clock”, the album runs at over thirty minutes and features four new track and three bonus tracks that until now have only been available on extremely limited releases.  At the same time band will also be releasing a new vinyl edition of their sophomore album “The Black Flux”.  “Oblivion Clock”, together with a new line of VIRUS merchandise, will be available as a digifile CD on the tour, and is also already available to pre-order from along with the “Black Flux” vinyl. More information about VIRUS can be found on the band’s website at

The other three bands on the tour all bring their own very individual interpretations of the eclectic experimental/avant-garde genre.  VULTURE INDUSTRIES, whose style tends towards the more progressive and extreme, are fronted by Bjornar Nilsen, known for his manic theatrical performances which garner praise for the band wherever they appear.  They have just signed with Season of Mist for the release of their third-full length album, and will be debuting new material during the tour.  More information on VULTURE INDUSTRIES can be found the band’s website at

KRAKOW, whose second full-length album “diin” was released on Dark Essence Records in September, could fit equally well within the post-rock, metal and stoner rock genres with a sound that ranges from dark, evocative and mesmerizing to fast, aggressive and heavy.  They recently added KAMPFAR drummer Ask Ty Arctander to their line up. More information about KRAKOW can be found on the band’s website at

Rounding off the line up is MONDVOLLAND, who bring touches of Black Folk metal deeply rooted in ancient myths and traditions of the Eastern Netherlands to their music. The release of their “Pestvogel” EP earlier this year showed that MONDVOLLAND was embarking on a different route from their debut full-length “d’Olde Roop”, with the intention of breathing new life into the somewhat staid Pagan/Folk scene. More information about MONDVOLLAND can be found on the band’s website at
