Having spent the last year or so using session bass players for their live appearances, Norwegian Black Metal veterans RAGNAROK have today announced that and bassist Rammr (JORDSKIPSTYRANN and ELVARHØI) has joined the band on a full-time, permanent basis.

“Originally it was our intention to use a session bassist going forward,” explains founder and frontman Jontho Panthera, one of Norway’s most iconic Black Metal drummers, who recently switched roles to become the band’s vocalist.  “However,  during the shows he did with us, Rammr’s dedication to his craft, and to RAGNAROK itself, became very evident to everyone.  He fits in perfectly with the rest of the band, which includes Bolverk on guitars and drummer Daniel Minge (DAUDEN), not only on stage,  but also on a personal level.

With their long-awaited sophomore full-length album “Mausoleum” due for release on the Gymnocal  Industries label on the 29th September, Norwegian Metallers DEVAR have given fans a second taste of what to expect with the release of the title track in digital format.

DEVAR’s unconventional approach to music draws its influences not only from the Extreme and Black Metal genres, but also from Avant-garde Metal and 70’s Prog.  Matched with a lyrical concept that takes listeners on a journey down the paths of fear, insanity, darkness and death in order to explore the decline of man, the resultant sound is one that is both original and unique.

Both the single “Masoleum”, and the entire album,  were recorded by Bjørnar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, TAAKE, HELHEIM) at the Conclave & Earshot Studios in  Bergen, along with Devar at the Alternate End Studios, and Ottoegil at Internasjonalt Farvann.  “Masoleum” is mixed and mastered by Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED) at the Conclave & Earshot Studios.

The band was originally formed as a solo project by frontman Devar in 2002, who, upon realising what was needed if he wanted to bring his vision to fruition, put together a full lineup that today consists of Devar on vocals, Obdsaija on  Drums and Percussion, Aadland on  Guitars and Ottoegil on Bass and  Keys.

Since the release of the band’s 2009 full-length debut “Alternate Endings”, “DEVAR” has matured into a more reflective band, and the resultant sophomore album reveals songs that are much more focused and with a more progressive touch.  As with the single, artwork for “Mausoelum” is by Tom Korsvold and photography by Ronny A. Norway’s leading Symphonic Prog band WOBBLER have inked a deal with Karisma Records and are set to release their fourth full-length album, “From Silence to Somewhere” on the 20th October.

Formed in Hønefoss in 1999, WOBBLER’s current lineup features current and former members of TUSMØRKE, WHITE WILLOW, THE CHRONICLES OF FATHER ROBIN and JAGA JAZZIST.  With Lars Fredrik Frøislie on keyboards and backing vocals, Kristian Karl Hultgren on  bass, bass clarinet and bass pedals, Martin Nordrum Kneppen on drums, percussion and recorder,  Andreas Wettergreen Strømman Prestmo on vocals, guitar, glockenspiel and percussion, and Geir Marius Bergom Halleland on lead guitar and backing vocals,  the band can avail itself of a considerable  array of instruments that  have a huge, and very interesting impact,  on the overall sound.

“From Silence to Somewhere” offers up a sound that is enigmatic, multi-flavoured and adventurous, with the use of copious amounts of Mellotron, Moog, Hammond, Chamberlin and other classical analogue keyboards, and of course the renowned Rickenbacker Bass .  The guitar riffs go from poignant to edgy. Melancholy harmonies combine with powerful crescendos and high-energy, spinet-driven passages,  flavoured with a touch of Flamenco and Italian Renaissance music to produce and album comprising four epic tracks that explore the idea of metamorphosis and alchemy.  It is a natural continuation from WOBBLER’s previous albums, but with a darker, more introspective edge.

With artwork by Thomas Kaldhol (Samuel Jackson 5, Panzerpappa, Lukas Kasha etc) , and a running time of 47 minutes, tracklisting on “From Silence to Somewhere” is as follows:

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS SIGN NORWEGIAN DOOMSTERS DWAAL

Whilst Dark Essence Records’ impressive band roster has never been short of Black and Extreme Metal,  the slow, heavy tones of Doom have, until now, been noticeable by their absence.  But that is all about to change as the Bergen-based label announced today that they had signed Norwegian Doomsters DWAAL.

Formed during 2014 in Norway’s capital city Oslo, DWAAL is a five-headed behemoth, assaulting the listener with a dense wall of sound that lies somewhere at the intersection of Doom and Post Metal. The atmosphere they create is one of slow motion, laden with heavy, sludgy, gloomy riffs,  punctuated alternately by despairing vocals one minute, and minimalistic, melancholic melodies the next.  Or, as the band like to put it: “A punch in the throat followed by a soothing caress, followed by another punch in the throat”.

DWAAL’s lineup is comprised of Christian Natusch on Vocals &  Synth, Eigil Dragvik on Guitar & Backing vocals, Rikke Karlsen on Guitar, Stian Hammer on Bass and Anders Johnsen on Drums.  The band’s studio debut was self-released in April of this year to a warm reception from the Norwegian underground.  The EP,  titled “Darben”, is a 31 minute, two-track opus which can be heard below and at https://dwaaldoom.bandcamp.com

Work has now begun on DWAAL’s first full-length album, with tracking expected to start in the spring of 2018 for release later in the year.

ATROX DEBUTS VIDEO OF TRACK FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

With *Monocle”,  their first album for over a decade set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 8th September, ATROX have today debuted the opening track from the album  in the form of a video by Snorre Hovdal of Dispenser Media.

According to the band,  Hovdal was chosen because of his previous work with two of the band members on their DRONTHEIM project, and he was given the song with the brief that it should be dark. More than satisfied with the result, ATROX felt that ” that’s what happens when small boys play with rocks…witches come in many sizes”.  The video is currently streaming exclusively at the following:

About the track itself, the band had this to say: “The reason for us picking “Mass” for a video was due to the energy and structure of the song – which is aggressive and straight to the point.  It also represents the album well, giving you a vibe about what it’s all about; a darker side of us and how we’re observing the world around us”.

Today’s ATROX lineup comprises Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  viNd on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Tor Arne Helgesen on Drums and Erik Paulsen on Bass, and with “Monocle” the band is  back stronger than ever.  The sound has been fine-tuned so that what was once an atmospheric mix of Death and Doom Metal has become much more progressive, experimental and industrial.  It is an album that shows a darker side to the band, with more epic and atmospheric elements than before.  Consolidating the unique ATROX sound within the album are catchy and upbeat sections.
