Fans of Atmospheric Prog Rock will have something to look forward to on the 3rd of May, because that’s the date that Karisma Records will release “A Storm is Coming”, the latest album from BJORN RIIS,  also known as the co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist of Norwegian Prog Rockers AIRBAG.

And, as a taster of what’s to come, Karisma have today released “Icarus”,  a single of a track from the album, and about which Riis had this to say:

Icarus” is based on a chord progression that I had lying around, and which seemed to fit the more stripped down, rock production that I had in mind for the new album. The title refers to the old Greek tale about Icarus flying too close to the sun and getting burned. This hubris is translated to a relationship between two people where one is constantly being burned for trying too much.

I’m very proud of the vocals on this one and I think we managed to create a sound that’s, at least for me, a bit different to what I’ve done on previous albums. “Icarus” features Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums and Kristian Hultgren (WOBBLER) on bass.”

“Icarus” can be streamed or downloaded at the following:

https://orcd.co/icarus

A follow up to 2017’s critically acclaimed “Coming Home” MLP, “A Storm is Coming” will be the third full-length album from Riis, and promises to be heavier, but at the same time more tender, than his previous releases. It is formed of six epic songs, clocking in at 51 minutes, and is built around the central themes of human relations and loss, written as a dialogue between two people.

Recorded at the Subsonic Society in Oslo, and majestically combining the art of rock, prog and atmospheric pop, “A Storm is Coming” was mixed by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (WHITE WILLOW, THE OPIUM CARTEL).

In addition to Bjørn Riis on vocals, guitars and a wide variety of instruments, the album features performances by Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums, Simen Valldal Johannessen (OAK) on keys, Ole Michael Bjørndal on guitar, and Mimmi Tamba on guest vocals.

With artwork by Asle Tostrup,  tracklisting on “A Storm is Coming” is as follows:

1 When Rain Falls
2. Icarus
3. You And Me
4. Stormwatch
5. This House
6. Epilogue

Black Magic PR

It’s not often that you get one signing announcement from two separate labels, but in this case it’s not so surprising since Dark Essence Records and Karisma Records are sister labels, and on this occasion are joining forces to release both old, and new material from BLACK MAGIC.

Kicking things off will be Dark Essence Records, who on April 12th will re-release BLACK MAGIC’s classic “Wizard’s Spell” EP, widely regarded as one of Norway’s finest underground metal releases of modern times, and long-unavailable.

Rooted in the speed/heavy metal traditions of the mid 1980’s, “Wizard’s Spell” was originally recorded during 2009/10, and released at the start of 2014. Rather than just being a retro- pastiche, “Wizard’s Spell” succeeds in sounding like a studio album that had actually recorded during the early eighties. Or, as one reviewer put it:

“For all intents and purposes this album could have been reissued from a 1981 release from a failing record company and no one would have questioned it. The band not only nails the sound but they create something so believable, I am hard pressed to find any flaws in it.”

In addition to the five-track “Wizard’s Spell”, the record will also include the demo “Reap of Evil”

Tracklisting as follows:

Wizard’s Spell
1. Black Magic
2. Rite of the Wizard
3. Voodoo Curse
4. Thunder
5. Death Militia

Reap Of Evil Demo
6. The Ritual
7. Night of Mayhem
8. Possessed
9. Embraced by the Occult

Black Magic Album Art PR

With the cover-art having been re-drawn from scratch by Linda K. Røed, “Wizard’s Spell” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition yellow/orange “Fire”  coloured vinyl, and can now be pre-ordered from the following:

All Formats:  https://blackmagicnorway.bandcamp.com/album/wizards-spell-2
CD & Vinyl:  https://www.darkessencerecords.no/webshop/

BLACK MAGIC had already disbanded by the time “Wizard’s Spell” was originally released, but a new line-up soon emerged, playing more blues-based late 60s/early 70s rock, but still with a hint of the occult.

Their debut full-length album will be released on Karisma Records either late this year, or sometime next year. And the wait will definitely be worth it.

Rhys Marsh PR 1 Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland

With just over two weeks to go to  the 22nd February release of “October After All”,  the third full-length album from singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer RHYS MARSH, Karisma Records have today released a track from the album.

The track, “Golden Lullabies”, can be streamed or downloaded at the following:

Rhys Marsh Golden Lullabies Single PR

“October After All” once again sees  RHYS handling most of the instrumental  and vocal duties, but the album also features contributions from Anders Bjermeland, Tale Vang Ellefsen, Kåre Kolve, Roar Øien and Arve Henriksen, as well as vocals from the likes of, Silje Leirvik, Anders Bjermeland, Rohey Taalah, Ole Kristian Malmedal, Vilde Aakre Lie, Tale Vang Ellefsen, Arve Henriksen and Tim Bowness.

The end result is a beautiful, atmospheric, prog album that features both alternative rock and jazz elements and about which Rhys recently had this to say:

I try to approach every album from a different angle, to give it its own identity. When I was writing this album, I was very inspired by music from the mid- to late-seventies, especially songs that had string synthesizers in place of Mellotrons. And of course, the drum sounds from that era, which I absolutely love. These songs were all written after I got married and our son was born, so for the first time, on any album really, I let the songs be reflections of specific events.

“October After All” was produced by Rhys Marsh and recorded & mixed by Marsh at the Autumnsongs Recording Studio in Trondheim, with additional recording by Roar Øien at Tyrirot Studio, Tim Bowness at the Hidden Art Studios, and  Arve Henriksen at the Arve Music Studio.

ruphus 1973 new born day band pr

Karisma Records are set to release the entire six-album back catalogue of the ’70’s Norwegian Prog legends RUPHUS. All the albums will be re-mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo,  who is working  with new digital transfers from the original master tapes which are stored in the Norwegian National Archives for posterity.

The first release, which is set to hit the streets on the 8th March, will be band’s debut album “New Born Day”, to be followed later by  “Ranshart”, “Let Your Light Shine”, “Inner Voice”, “Flying Colours” and “Manmade”.

Throughout their first incarnation, which lasted from 1970 to 1981, RUPHUS developed from playing hard, progressive rock,  to becoming one of the leaders in the jazz rock genre, whilst fielding a lineup that contained more members than a football team.

Originally released in 1973, “New Born Day” is widely regarded as one of the best albums to have emerged from the  Norwegian Prog scene.   Conceived  in a house in Meråker (near Trondheim) during  the summer of 1973, the band spent a month locked away working on their creation before entering the studio with producer Stein Robert Ludvigsen.

The lineup on “New Born Days” featured seven members, of whom only Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) would go on to play on all of RUPHUS’ albums between then and 1981.  Whilst the band nodded in the direction of the likes of KING CRIMSON, JETHRO TULL, YES and SAVAGE ROSE,  RUPHUS had a clear advantage when it came to stamping their own identity on their music by being fronted by not one, but two vocalists, with one of the female Prog  pioneers Gudny Aspaas combining her exceptionally powerful vocals with those of Rune Sundby.

“New Born Day” is clearly a product of its time, and so it should be, representing, as it does, a period of rock history in which musicians performed their music together, in the same room, all at the same time.  However, fans who are discovering RUPHUS for the first time cannot fail to notice how Ludvigsen succeeded in producing an album that sounds fresh even today.

With artwork by Anders Kaardahl, “New Born Day” will be available in CD and digital formats as well as in heavyweight vinyl formats in regular black and limited edition blue vinyl.  Tracklisting for “New Born Day” is as follows:

  1. Coloured Dreams
  2. Scientific Ways
  3. Still Alive
  4. The Man Who Started It All
  5. Trapped In A Game
  6. New Born Day
  7. Day After Tomorrow
