With a trademark sound that is an uncompromising mix of sludgy riffs and psychedelic nuances, BISMARCK’s lineup of Torstein Tveiten on Vocals, Leif Herland on Guitar and Backing Vocals, Eirik Goksøyr on Guitar, Tomas Osland on Bass and Tore Lyngstad on Drums, have earned themselves a reputation as one of the heaviest bands in Norway.

With the band having completed their latest album, Dark Essence Records have today announced details of what will be BISMARCK’s third full-length release.  Slated to hit the streets on the 3rd May, “Vourukasha” promises to be an amp melting form of stoner doom, combined with atmospheric post-rock, and  with a hint of Middle Eastern folk music and the Norwegian black metal the band grew up listening to.

As a hint of what to expect, Dark Essence have today released a single from the album.  Titled “Sky Father”, the single can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at:

https://link.darkessencerecords.no/Bismarck_Sky-Father

This is what BISMARCK had to say about the single:

“Sky Father” is the divine wrath, the flood to come, and the fall of man. Its aggressive nature and ferocity coming to life with the help of Aslak (Ondt Blod), as he summons the unavoidable calamity.

“Vourukasha” is an album that amply showcases BISMARCK’s music. With its exploration of western esotericism, altered states of consciousness and a mystical apocalypse, “Vourukasha’s” lyrical content acts as the perfect foil to the band’s sound, which alternates between intense, fuzzed-out heaviness, and clean, atmospheric drones.

As the band explained

“Vourukasha” is a work born from curiosity, hard work, and sheer determination.  It will take you on a metaphysical journey through space and time. From the darkest depths of the sea to the endless cosmic void. Join us, and dive into the Heavenly Sea.

With artwork by Vaderetro,  track listing for “Vourukasha” is as follows:

  1. Sky Father
  2. Echoes
  3. Kigal
  4. The Tree of All Seeds
  5. Vourukasha
  6. Ocean Dweller

“Vourukasha” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition Splatter Vinyl formats and can now be pre-ordered from:

Dark Essence Records have announced that Norwegian Doom Metallers BISMARCK will be joining the label, bringing with them a well-deserved reputation for being one of the heaviest bands from Norway, one that has been stirring things up in the Norwegian underground scene ever since the 2018 release of the acclaimed debut album “Urkraft”.

BISMARCK’s trademark sound is an uncompromising mix of sludgy riffs and psychedelic nuances,  inspired by a wide array of genres and styles.  The end result is an amp melting form of stoner doom, combined with atmospheric post-rock, and  with a hint of Middle Eastern folk music and the Norwegian black metal they grew up listening to.

With music that alternates between intense, fuzzed-out heaviness, and clean, atmospheric drones, and with a lyrical content that explores western esotericism, altered states of consciousness and a mystical apocalypse, BISMARCK are now ready for their latest full-length album to be unleashed upon the world.

A follow up to 2020’s critically acclaimed sophomore album “Oneiromancer”,  the band’s third studio outing, which we can reveal will be named “Vourukasha” is scheduled for release in early 2024.

Commenting on the fact that they will be joining one of Norway’s best known labels, BISMARCK had this to say:

We’re stoked to sign with Dark Essence Records! They have been, and still are, a crucial part of the heavy music scene both nationally and internationally!

This is an important signing for us, and we’re looking forward to working with professional and dedicated people.  Furthermore, they are people whom we consider our friends so we’re excited for the next chapter of our journey!

We would, though,  just like to apologise to our fans for the long wait you’ve had for new material.  We know it seems like you’ve been hanging on forever, but  the album is finally on the way!  We don’t want to say too much about it at the moment, but you will not be disappointed.  Let’s just say that it has all you would expect from BISMARCK – and then some.

BISMARCK’s lineup is comprised of Torstein Tveiten on Vocals, Leif Herland on Guitar and Backing Vocals, Eirik Goksøyr on Guitar,  Tomas Osland on Bass and Tore Lyngstad on Drums.

The band has been confirmed to appear at Oslo’s Desertfest in May 2024.

With “Hestehoven”, TUSMØRKE ‘s eleventh full-length album,  scheduled for release on the 18th August, Karisma Records have today released a second single from the album. And, in keeping with the mystical tone of “Hestehoven”, the track chosen is “Den behornede guden”,  which translated means “The horned god”, a being about which the band had this to say:

The horned god is the joyous spirit of spring, bursting forth as nature is sprung from the prison of winter. Rejoice in the chorus of praise, a manifold chant of hallelujah for the horned one. Give thanks to the king of the forest, he who puts the wild in wilderness.

“Den behornede guden”  can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at:

https://link.karismarecords.no/Tusmorke_Den-behornede-guden

Named after the flower Coltsfoot,  “Hestehoven” is an album in which TUSMØRKE’s vivid imagination has been allowed to roam even more wildly than ever before.  Seemingly springing from the Underworld both in sound, with its chthonic aspects, as well as in its conceptual undertones, it invites the listener to hum along whilst peering through the keyhole of the local church and witnessing a devil’s pact.

Within  “Hestehoven” the band has created a Bacchanalian realm reminiscent of the erotic mysteries practiced by ancient fertility cults. Satyrs and Nymphs cast away their inhibitions, innocent strangers are sucked into chance encounters with mildew-encrusted adult magazines, whilst Warlocks cackle and witches blush at all the antics,  and only a wise priest, able to see beyond the Lord’s Prayer, is able to bind Old Eric to his bidding.

There is absolutely no turning back once you step into the world of “Hestehoven” and wander down paths that are fraught with danger and temptation, because, as the band says, the album is, simply put:

True Norwegian finger-clicking, butt-swinging, prog rock. No more, no less – but cerebral in excess! Spring has sprung! If it is all too much to bear, close your eyes and think about the flowers. Hail Pan.

Even the artwork for “Hestehoven” has been specially commissioned from the highly acclaimed Norwegian artist Sverre Malling, who has successfully visualised this mystical land.

Track listing for “Hestehoven” is as follows:

  1. Cycle of the Gylfaginning
  2. Hestehoven
  3. Den behornede guden
  4. Åndemaneren
  5. Jeg klumser deg
  6. Kyprianos
  7. The Wicked Ways of Witches and Wizards

“Hestehoven” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition Vinyl with 4 page Lyric Booklet and can now be pre-ordered from:

LARS FREDRIK FRØISLIE, keyboard player for Prog Rockers WOBBLER is set to release his debut solo album “Fire Fortellinger” on Karisma Records on the 2nd June.

Comprised of four tunes, each one telling its own story, “Fire Fortellinger” came about during the pandemic when Frøislie was forced to isolate like everyone else, and chose to make this time as productive as possible. Explaining how the album was conceived and the inspiration that was behind it Frøislie had this to say:

During the pandemic, I dreamed myself back in time, and consumed music, art and literature from the old days. The music is characterized by this, and inspiration is drawn from, among other things, Snorre Sturlason, Vinternatt i Rondane and Markens Grøde. It is both a search back to an apparently more primitive time; as well as a quest back to nature and away from civilization and people.

I took many trips out to Raknehaugen in Romerike, as well as trips to an old cottage in Heidal and the home districts of Ringerike (with its many Viking graves and magical landscapes), and this can also be heard in the music.

Frøislie has also completed the first part of a video series in which he describes the making of “Fire Fortellinger” and it can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/qApnt1EGBvM

Had it not been for the pandemic, much of the material on “Fire Fortellinger” would probably have been earmarked for a new WOBBLER album, with English lyrics and subjected to the revisions that are inevitable when a band gets together over new material. However, given that the circumstances dictated that he would have to work on the material alone, Frøislie was able to keep his material as spontaneous as possible, without having to put it through too many rounds of processing.

He has thus succeeded in preserving the impulsiveness of the original, and, as a consequence, much of what the audience gets to hear is improvised and recorded in one take, thereby maintaining the hands-on human aspect with an avoidance of click tracks, auto-tune, MIDI or too much technology.

With a sound that draws its inspiration from 70s prog rock, especially from Italy, Norwegian 90s black metal, British rock and heavy metal  from the 60s and 70s, as well as folk music, jazz and psychedelic rock, “Fire Fortellinger” finds Frøislie on vocals and drums, and availing himself of a formidable array of instruments including Ludwig drums and a few tons of old analogue keyboards including Hammond C3, Mellotron M400, Minimoog Model D, Chamberlin M-1, Yamaha CP70B, William de Blaise spinet, Hohner Clavinet D6, Rhodes MkII and an Arp Pro Soloist. With him is Nikolai Hængsle (ELEPHANT9, NEEDLEPOINT, BIGBANG, BAND OF GOLD etc.) on Rickenbacker, Fender Jazz Bass, Fender Precision and Fender Telecaster Bass.

The album artwork is by Frøislie himself and “Fire Fortellinger” will be available in CD, Limited Edition LP and Digital formats. Track listing is as follows:

01. Rytter av dommedag
02. Et sted under himmelhvelvet
03. Jærtegn
04. Naturens katedral

For those wishing to delve deeper into the stories behind each track, Frøislie was happy to oblige:

The first song “Rytter av dommedag” is themed around Ragnarok, when King Rakne awakens in his large burial mound outside Romerike and, together with the old gods, creates real mischief.

The second song “Et sted under himmelhvelvet” is dreamy, possibly set in a Renaissance garden near Florence or Arcadia. But in principle it can be anywhere where it feels good to be. It is partly about travelling to a place and feeling that you have been there before – only to find out that you had ancestors who lived there long ago.

The third song “Jærtegn” opens in a frenzy, with a horse and cart speeding through the forest. The wagon overturns at the same time as there is a solar eclipse, and the riders become eternal wanderers in the dark forest, only visible to us now and then like the northern lights, as they vainly stretch their arms towards the sun in the hope of finding their way home.

The final song “Naturens Katedral” is a depiction of the Norwegian mountains in winter where the cold is bitter, and blizzards and avalanches abound. It is also a search for bygone times when life was more basic out in the wilderness.

Having learned their craft at the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim, WIZRD have completed work on their new album “Seasons”, and Karisma Records have today released the track “Lessons” from the album.

“Lessons” is a track that gives an insight into what we can expect from the debut album from this talented Norwegian quartet, consisting of Hallvard Gaardløs (SPIDERGAWD, DRAKEN and more) on bass and lead vocals, Karl Bjorå (MEGALODON COLLECTIVE and more) on guitar and vocals, Vegard Lien Bjerkan (SOFT FFOG and more) on keyboards and vocals and Axel Skalstad (KROKOFANT, SOFT FFOG and more) on drums.

The band’s Hallvard Gaardløs explains::

“Lessons” is somewhat the quintessential WIZRD song, at least for me. It is a good representation of what we intend to do on this album, mixing progressive and improvisational elements with rock & pop sensibilities. The lyrics are about the New Age movement, and the fact that I find it rather silly. I’m kind of just making fun of it all, comparing yoga to a sacrificing ritual for Satan. With that said, I practice yoga sometimes myself, so I guess that makes me a demon worshipper.. Oh well, why not! Hail Satan!

The single “Lessons” can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at

https://link.karismarecords.no/Wizrd_Lessons

“Seasons”  itself, is set for release on the 21st October, and showcases how WIZRD are more than happy to test their limits with a sound that encompasses  Rock and Indie to Jazz and Prog, whilst breaking a few rules along the way. The end result is a masterclass on how to produce a catchy  album that is filled with beautiful vocal harmonies, stunning melodies, quirky jazz grooves and a rock’n’roll drive to die for.

Produced by Norwegian film score composer and JAGA JAZZIST drummer Martin Horntveth, “Seasons” was recorded at the Studio Paradiso in Oslo by Marcus Forsgren (BROR FORSGREN, JAGA JAZZIST) and Horntveth, and mixed by Bergen based musician and producer Matias Tellez (YOUNG DREAMS, GIRL IN RED).

With artwork by Steph Hope,  tracklisting on “Seasons” is as follows:

1. Lessons
2. Free Will
3. Spitfire
4. All is as it should be
5. Show Me What You Got
6. Fire & Water
7. Divine
8. When You Call

“Seasons” will be available in CD, Digital and a Limited Edition LP in transparent magenta vinyl formats, and can now be pre-ordered from:

“Irrepressible” is a word that springs to mind when describing Norway’s Psychedelic  Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE, who will be back in October of this year with “Intetnett”, which will be their third, and quite possibly, final, album directed towards a younger audience.

But whether their albums are aimed at children or adults, TUSMØRKE are never content to just entertain, something they do consummately well, they also want to remind their audience of old, long-forgotten histories, and on “Intetnett” this is exactly what they do, with a fascinating mix of subjects ranging from  artificial intelligence, to advancements in technology, to the Singularity, and, of course,  ancient Mesopotamian gods

“Intetnett” tells the  story of  two evil scientists who plant a self-teaching system onto the computers of an unsuspecting school. The system is called Intetnett, and,  via  the use of electronic impulses, it takes  control of  an ant colony living in the school kitchen.  Needless to say, it also soon takes over the minds of pupils and teachers alike.  The minds of everyone, that is,  except for a technophobic Norwegian teacher, a substitute teacher without login info, and a small group of pupils.

With the world  slowly slipping into a totalitarian nightmare where no one thinks for themselves, no one dreams anymore, and human culture itself is in peril,  there is someone who is missing the humans! Down in the deepest depths, the old Mesopotamian gods are fading due to the lack of human attention,  and they want to help humankind to regain its freedom.

But the only thing that can stop Intetnett is technology from a bygone era – in other words,  Magic! Thus the Norwegian teacher, the substitute and the children are given instructions on how to summon a Golem, a creature of legend that will be able to confront, and hopefully defeat,  Intetnett, thereby  pulling the plug on the dangerous computers.

And, as an introduction to the album, Karisma Records have today released the track “Den nye tida”, which can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services via https://orcd.co/tusmorke_den-nye-tida

“Intetnett”, which Karisma Records will release on the 7th October, is actually comprised of  two original musicals “Intetnett” and “Når Enden er Golem”,  which were written for, and first performed at, the Aktivitetsskolen Nordstrand in 2017/2018.

With artwork by the legendary Norwegian artist Thore Hansen, “Intetnett” features a  whopping total of 21 tracks and  will be available in CD, Digital, and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, the latter of which will come with a 12-page lyric booklet.

Tracklisting as follows:

  1. Satt i system                                      12. Den nye tida
  2. Det beste for budsjettet                     13. Synth etisk
  3. Han er litterær                                  14. Kunstig uintelligens
  4. Varslerduett                                      15. Gudenes krig
  5. Vikaren                                              16. Verdensarvingen
  6. Jakelstigen                                         17. Enki Dumuzi Absu (CD only)

  9. Maurenes Jenka                              20. Golem
  10. Undringstimen (CD only)              21. Kontakten brytes

Following on from the completion  of their third full-length album “Electric Temple” Norway’s SUPERLYNX, whose sound is a distinctive combination of  doom, psychedelic and meditative atmospheres suffused with heaviness and droning rock,  found themselves at somewhat of a loose end , falling prey, as did many, to the effects of the Pandemic on the live scene.

This led to SUPERLYNX embarking on the recording of “Solstice”, which was to become a six-track EP that contains both original material and covers, and which will be released in Digital format on Dark Essence Records on the 8th December.  As  the band explains:

After recording our third album “Electric Temple” in the middle of the pandemic there were almost no gigs to play and a lot of free time. We were not ready for a break from music and not quite ready to embark on a new album just yet. So for the love of playing and for the love of music we booked a studio weekend mid winter 2020 and recorded four cover songs.

These songs are musical gems to us and have had an influence on our own musical life in one way or another. We then put them together with two original songs from the “Electric Temple” sessions for which there had been no room on the album

After making three deeply personal and emotionally heavy albums,  some time out of our own heads playing music was a fun and refreshing experience. It was also a boost before starting the writing process for  our fourth album, which is just about to happen.

A teaser video for the “Solstice” EP can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/T3aZuS4TQOE

With the exception of the track “Cosmic Wave”, which was mixed by Marc Urselli, all the songs on “Solstice” have been recorded, mixed, produced and mastered by Ole Teigen at Crowtown Recordings.

The artwork for “Solstice” is by Pia Isaksen, and the tracklisting is as follows:

1.Born Too Late (Saint Vitus cover)
2. Spread Your Love (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club cover)
3. Something in the Way (Nirvana Cover)
4. Nature Boy (Nat King Cole / Eden Ahbez cover)
5. Reorbit
6. Cosmic Wave

Formed in 2013 by drummer Ole Teigen and bassist/vocalist Pia Isaksen, it had always been SUPERLYNX’s intention to remain a duo, but a meeting with guitarist Daniel Bakken, coupled with his performance during rehearsals, changed all that.  It was clear that he belonged in the band and SUPERLYNX became a fully-fledged trio.

As the time ticks down to the October 1 release of HIMMELLEGEME’s sophomore full-length “Variola Vera”, Karisma Records have released another single and accompanying video from the album to whet the appetite of the band’s growing fan-base.

The track chosen glories in the title of “Blowing Raspberries” about which the band have this to say:

“Blowing Raspberries”  was also one of the earlier tracks written for this release. Aleksander brought the band a short demo, sort of as a joke. It wasn’t like anything he’d written before, but we quickly realized it had the potential to be a banger. Lyrically the subject is written as a space cop drama set in the future. Both lyrically and musically there are some hints pointing to a certain decade – or time period – so, put your down on and shake your bones loose!

“Blowing Raspberries” can be downloaded or streamed from a number of services at:

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Himmellegeme_BlowingRaspberries

Whilst the video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/A1f6ihTE2II

Recorded from late spring through to the  late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio, “Variola Vera” is the follow-up to HIMMELLEGEME’s critically acclaimed debut “Myth of Earth”, an album that brought the band to the attention of prog audiences world-wide.

Produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also mixed and mastered the album, “Variola Vera” is, according to the band, “not quite a concept album” as they recently explained:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se – the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints.

Influenced by both Blues and Atmospheric Prog Rock, HIMMELLEGEME’s lineup of  Aleksander Vormestrand (vocals, guitar), Hein Alexander Olson (lead guitar, slide, drums), Lauritz Isaksen (keys), Erik Alfredsen (bass, backing vocals, misc. instruments), Leiv Martin Green (drums, backing vocals), use heavy-hitting riffs, chilling melodies and melancholic lyrics, to create a dark, otherworldly, and timeless sound.

With cover art by Samantha Muljat, the track list for “Variola Vera” is as follows:

  1. Shaping Mirrors Like Smoke
  2. Heart Listening

Bergen’s Psychedelic Rockers HIMMELLEGEME are back with “Variola Vera”, the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut album “Myth of Earth”.   Recorded during the late spring through late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio, the band’s latest outing was produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also mixed and mastered the album.

Not quite a concept album HIMMELLEGEME described “Variola Vera” thus:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se – the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints.

Set for release on Karisma Records on the 1st October, in CD, Digital and Limited Edition LP formats, fans have today been given a taste of “Variola Vera” with the release of the single “Let the Mother Burn” which can be downloaded or streamed on various platforms at:

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Himmellegeme_Let-the-mother-burn

It is a single about which the band had this to say:

Let The Mother Burn was one of the first tracks that we wrote for the album. It definitely has our sound to it – a little slow paced, but also powerful and tribal. The lyrics are about being consumed by the sheer beauty and horrors that Mother Nature can provide us – it can be amazing, but also quite frightening.

Influenced by both Blues and Atmospheric Prog Rock, HIMMELLEGEME’s lineup of  Aleksander Vormestrand (vocals, guitar), Hein Alexander Olson (lead guitar, slide, drums), Lauritz Isaksen (keys), Erik Alfredsen (bass, backing vocals, misc. instruments), Leiv Martin Green (drums, backing vocals), use heavy-hitting riffs, chilling melodies and melancholic lyrics, to create a dark, otherworldly, and timeless sound.

Dark Essence Records have announced that the 16th April has been set for the release of “Electric Temple”, the third full-length album from SUPERLYNX, the Norwegian trio known for its distinctive, genre-defying sound that combines  doom, psychedelic and meditative atmospheres with heaviness and droning rock.

As a taste of things to come, the label has today released both a single, and a video, of the title track. The single is available to download or stream on a number of services at:

https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/Superlynx_Electric-Temple

Whilst the video, by Joan Pope / Temple ov Saturn, can be seen below and at  https://youtu.be/zphXNF_dUyU

For SUPERLYNX’s lineup of Pia Isaksen on  Bass and Vocals,  Daniel Bakken on  Guitars and Ole Teigen on Drums, piano, keys and vocals, “Electric Temple” is both a continuation on from  their previous album “New Moon” and a further development of moods not previously explored by the band.  Poignantly, “Electric Temple” also bears a deeply felt  mark left by the tragic death of a close family member.

According to the band, the title of the album is a reference to Jimi Hendrix´ way of looking at music. As they explain:

Our music and lyrics are as always very personal to us and refer to what we go through.  Life, music, nature and inspiration is a general focus.  We always want to push ourselves and explore deeper, wider and further and we feel this album shows our effort in that respect.

As Hendrix said “We call our music ‘electric church music’. Because it’s like a religion to us.” And that is much like how we feel about ours. In music we find so much of what people seek in temples, religions or other spiritual forms – strength to endure trials, peace of mind, ecstasy, safety, hope, community, joy, transcendence etc. In the process of writing our third album this truth only become clearer to us. Music is our temple.

As to the actual technical aspects of the album SUPERLYNX  went to describe how fortunate they were that producer Marc Urselli got in touch with the band wanting to work on the album with them:

He happens to be a multiple Grammy Award winning producer who has done sound for Nick Cave, Mike Patton, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, The Black Crowes and countless more.  He also has a project with Lee Ranaldo & Jim Jarmusch, has played in a trio with Stephen O´Malley and has a project with people like Steve von Till, Matt Pike, Lori S, Dave Chandler and more.

But these credits were not what was important to us though.  It was rather the fact that his sound was so in line with what we ourselves hoped to get out of this. Marc ended up mixing the album and we are really happy about how he has enhanced our sound.

The same goes for Fridtjof Lindeman of Strype Audio, who mastered “Electric Temple” as he did for our previous two albums.  He is always a pleasure to work with and does excellent work every time.

Recorded and produced by Ole Teigen in his studio Crowtown Recordings, and with album artwork by Pia Isaksen and band photo by Carl Eek, track listing for “Electric Temple” is as follows:

1. Rising Flame
2. Electric Temple
3. Apocalypse
4. Moonbather
5. Sonic Sacrament
6. Returning Light
7. Laws of Nature
8. Then you Move
9. Siren Sing
10. May
