When Dark Essence Records recently announced the details of “Fremmede Toner”,  the upcoming release from  Norwegian Folk Prog Rockers LUMSK, it was clear that this was going to be a very unusual  album, as the band explained:

We stumbled upon «Fremmde Toner», a collection of poems the by Norwegian Author André Bjerke in which he had translated and re-created poems from different English and German speaking poets, and we realised that not only did we want to write music for the Norwegian poems, but also to write music for the original poems themselves. The idea of the concept was not to create the same songs twice, but to make the songs mirror each other in a way, trying to somehow recreate the idea of a translation or re-creation. Thus, as with the poems themselves, the songs are not the same, but are, nevertheless familiar.

In keeping with this concept, Dark Essence Records will be debuting a double single from the album, with Andre Bjerke´s “Det Døde Barn” and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer´s “Das Tode Kind” being the first pair to be released, and, according to LUMSK, this will be the first time that the band can be heard singing in German.

The two tracks can be streamed or downloaded from a variety of services at

When LUMSK were formed in 1999 it was a time when metal bands and fans alike were exploring the use  regional folk traditions within music. Already sure that this was the direction in which they wanted their music to go, and with their use of heavy guitars, keyboard and organs, violins, session horns and female vocals, LUMSK were therefore ideally placed to build themselves from the ground up, and take their place in what was to become a sub-genre all of its own.

Having garnered  a considerable reputation, both at home and internationally, LUMSK took a hiatus which lasted sixteen years from the release of their last album, but now they are back with “Fremmede Toner” which will be the band’s fourth full-length release.

Mixed by Rhys Marsh at Autumnsongs Recordings, and Mastering by Arnstein Fossvik at AudioMaster,  “Fremmede Toner”  is the LUMSK’s most varied and intriguing work to date , demonstrating how the band’s unique blend of metal and Nordic folk music melds together with rich textures and clever arrangements.

Featuring works by some of the most famous European and North American poets, such as Nietzsche, Goethe, Swinburne etc., the “dual” concept of “Fremmede Toner”   is also reflected on the album cover by Per Spjøtvold, someone with whom the band has worked since the beginning.

Track listing is as follows:

  1. Det Døde Barn
  2. En Harmoni
  3. Avskjed
  4. Under Linden
  5. Fiolen
  6. Dagen er Endt
  7. Das Tode Kind
  8. A Match
  9. Abschied
  10. Under der Linden
  11. Das Veilchen
  12. The Day is Done

“Fremmede Toner” will be released on the 5th May in CD, Limited Edition Double LP in Gold and Turquoise vinyl and Digital formats, and is now available to pre-order from the following:

You rarely, if ever, get Prog albums aimed at children, but then along came TUSMØRKE, a band that has  never been overly concerned with what is, and what is not, the norm, with not one, but three such albums – the third “Intetnett” due for release on Karisma Records on the 7th October.

As you would expect from a children’s album “Intetnett” has a very definite story line, and in it TUSMØRKE regale us with the adventures that ensue  when  two evil scientists plant a self-teaching system called Intetnett onto the computers of an unsuspecting school.  Intetnett then proceeds to use electronic impulses to take control of an ant colony that lives in the school kitchen.   The system soon jumps from the ants to human hosts, taking over the minds of both pupils and teachers.

But every adventure has its heroes, quite often a group of misfits who,  in this case, happen to be one of the teachers who is a technophobe, a substitute teacher who does not yet have the necessary login info to access the computers, and a small group of pupils.

And now you can get another insight into the somewhat anarchic world of the Norwegian Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE with the release of a third single taken from “Intetnett”.  The track, “Kunstig uintelligens”, or  “Artificial Unintelligence”, can be downloaded or streamed from a number of services at https://link.karismarecords.no/Tusmorke_Kunstig-Uintelligens

Commenting on the track, the band had this to say:

Are we happier now that we create avatars to simulate perfect lives and share doctored images of fake non-events online in order for these signs to be consumed by another simulacrum out there in the cold, vast cyberspace? Of course we are! What’s not to like and share?

Written for, and first performed at, the Aktivitetsskolen Nordstrand,  the album is actually comprised of  two original musicals – “Intetnett” and “Når Enden er Golem” and will quite possible be the band’s final children’s release. It was recorded  at Det Ytre Rommet, Holy Space! and the Nordstrand Skole by a lineup that includes Benediktator (bass, vocals, guitars, synths, percussion, whistling), Krizla (flute, vocals, piano, synths, percussion) and HlewagastiR (drums).

Tracklisting as follows:

  1. Satt i system                                      12. Den nye tida
  2. Det beste for budsjettet                    13. Synth etisk
  3. Han er litterær                                  14. Kunstig uintelligens
  4. Varslerduett                                      15. Gudenes krig
  5. Vikaren                                               16. Verdensarvingen
  6. Jakelstigen                                          17. Enki Dumuzi Absu (CD only)
  7. Vi drikker ikke melk                       18. Før flommen
  8. Vi er elever                                         19. Enkis sang
  9. Maurenes Jenka                              20. Golem
  10. Undringstimen (CD only)              21. Kontakten brytes
  11. Kunstig Intelligens

With artwork by the legendary Norwegian artist Thore Hansen, “Intetnett” features a  whopping total of 21 tracks and  will be available in CD, Digital, and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, the latter of which will come with a 12-page lyric booklet.

Unwary adult  listeners (because this album is for them too) should definitely keep in mind the fact that  that while TUSMØRKE may aim some of their albums at children, and entertaining though those albums may be, the band also has a serious message to impart to its adult listeners. And, by introducing a fascinating mix of subjects ranging from  artificial intelligence, to advancements in technology, to the Singularity, and  Mesopotamian gods,  TUSMØRKE reminds us all of our old, long-forgotten histories.

In fact, “Intetnett” serves as a warning about the direction mankind is taking with technology, where our world is becoming a totalitarian nightmare where no one thinks for themselves, no one dreams anymore, and human culture itself is in peril. But all in not lost, because, long-ignored by humans, and consequently fading away, the old Mesopotamian Gods want to help humankind regain its freedom, and the only way to do so is by using Magic – better known as the old technology from a bygone era.

“Irrepressible” is a word that springs to mind when describing Norway’s Psychedelic  Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE, who will be back in October of this year with “Intetnett”, which will be their third, and quite possibly, final, album directed towards a younger audience.

But whether their albums are aimed at children or adults, TUSMØRKE are never content to just entertain, something they do consummately well, they also want to remind their audience of old, long-forgotten histories, and on “Intetnett” this is exactly what they do, with a fascinating mix of subjects ranging from  artificial intelligence, to advancements in technology, to the Singularity, and, of course,  ancient Mesopotamian gods

“Intetnett” tells the  story of  two evil scientists who plant a self-teaching system onto the computers of an unsuspecting school. The system is called Intetnett, and,  via  the use of electronic impulses, it takes  control of  an ant colony living in the school kitchen.  Needless to say, it also soon takes over the minds of pupils and teachers alike.  The minds of everyone, that is,  except for a technophobic Norwegian teacher, a substitute teacher without login info, and a small group of pupils.

With the world  slowly slipping into a totalitarian nightmare where no one thinks for themselves, no one dreams anymore, and human culture itself is in peril,  there is someone who is missing the humans! Down in the deepest depths, the old Mesopotamian gods are fading due to the lack of human attention,  and they want to help humankind to regain its freedom.

But the only thing that can stop Intetnett is technology from a bygone era – in other words,  Magic! Thus the Norwegian teacher, the substitute and the children are given instructions on how to summon a Golem, a creature of legend that will be able to confront, and hopefully defeat,  Intetnett, thereby  pulling the plug on the dangerous computers.

And, as an introduction to the album, Karisma Records have today released the track “Den nye tida”, which can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services via https://orcd.co/tusmorke_den-nye-tida

“Intetnett”, which Karisma Records will release on the 7th October, is actually comprised of  two original musicals “Intetnett” and “Når Enden er Golem”,  which were written for, and first performed at, the Aktivitetsskolen Nordstrand in 2017/2018.

With artwork by the legendary Norwegian artist Thore Hansen, “Intetnett” features a  whopping total of 21 tracks and  will be available in CD, Digital, and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, the latter of which will come with a 12-page lyric booklet.

Dark Essence Records have inked a deal with Folk Prog Rockers, LUMSK, a band that describes itself as:

A seven headed “troll” that combines traditional or traditional-inspired elements from Norwegian folklore and poetry with progressive rock and metal.

Formed in 1999 In Trondheim, Norway, LUMSK set out to explore the concept of regional folk traditions, as did many European heavy metal bands towards the end of the 20th Century.  So great, in fact, was that interest, and its ensuing popularity amongst fans,  that, by the first decade of the new Millennium, it had burgeoned into a significant sub-genre all of its own.

You could, in fact, go as far as to say that LUMSK was probably one of the first bands that had been “built for folk” from the ground up,  with heavy guitars, keyboard and organs, violins, session horns and female vocals.

LUMSK’s debut album “Åsmund Frægdegjævar” appeared  in 2003 and was based on the saga of Åsmund Frægdegjævar, who traveled from Ireland to save the princess from trolls.  A year later In 2004 LUMSK  began  a collaboration with the author Birger Sivertsen, an expert on Norwegian folklore and sagas, which led to the release of 2005’s album “Troll” whose were lyrics based on Nordic mythology.   The band’s third album, 2007’s “Det Vilde Kor”,  this time featured  lyrics by Norwegian author, and holder of a Nobel Prize in Literature,  Knut Hamsun.

The band’s fourth full-length album has been a while in the making, with LUMSK entering the studio as early as 2010 to begin work on “Fremmede Toner”, a collection of poems by Norwegian  author Andre Bjerke. After a series of setbacks and delays,  which has served to make the album even more anticipated than before, work on “Fremmede Toner” is well underway, and is scheduled for release on Dark Essence Records in 2022, on a date as yet to be confirmed.

Which brings us to today, and today’s lineup, which, following a myriad of comings and goings over the years since LUMSK’s inception, is comprised of Mari Klingen  on Vocals, Siv Lena Laugtug Sæther on Violin, Eystein Garberg on Guitar, Roar Grindheim on  Guitar, Espen Warankov Godø on Keyboards, Espen Hammer on Bass, and Vidar Berg on drums.

KOSMODOME, another rising star in the firmament of Norway’s flourishing Prog Music scene, has found its way into Karisma Records capacious arms, with the label preparing to release the band’s debut full-length album later this year.

The brainchild of the two Sandvik brothers,  Sturle on guitars and vocals, and Severin on drums, KOSMODOME’s music is riff-based Rock with Stoner elements all of which are placed within a progressive universe to great effect.  Together, the duo have an explosive drive, where the melodic can often be found hand in hand with the hard and the heavy.

Having self- released an EP via streaming in 2019, KOSMODOME add a bassist and guitarist to their live performances, appearing on stage as a four-piece, and they are, understandably, excited to be working with Karisma Records for their first full-length release, as the band explains:

We feel very humble and honoured to have signed with Karisma Records alongside all their great and inspiring bands. This already feels like the start of a fun and lasting relationship, and we look forward to showing people what Kosmodome is all about!

Details of KOSMODOME’s upcoming album will be released in due course, but in the meantime, fans can get a taste of the band by listening to them on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/4UIRcnv34nNU710MmhlqDK?si=XT122EAGRYe2vACpP6hhzQ

Norwegian Prog Rock duo JORDSJØ are steeped in the traditions of the kind of Nordic Prog rock that emerged during the last century, but that doesn’t mean that the music produced by multi instrumentalist Håkon Oftung (TUSMØRKE, BLACK MAGIC) and drummer Kristian Frøland rests there.  Far from it, because what JORDSJØ have managed to do is take what was best from that era’s Prog rock, and make it entirely their own by adding a folk-inspired twist to a plethora of interesting melodies.

And two weeks from now, the 7th May to be precise, JORDSJØ’s third full-length album “Pastoralia” will hit the streets on Karisma Records.  But in the meantime, band and label have released another track from the album to whet the fan’s appetites.

The track in question is “Beitemark”, and  JORDSJØ  gave us this insight into it:

“Beitemark” is about nostalgia and the desire to gradually leave behind the monotony of daily life with its trivial chores, and to rise up into the starlit sky.  On this song, we have actively used analogue Space Echo to give it an extra cosmic vibe in order to contrast the simple, down to earth depictions of local nature and the surging emotions  of the final part of the song.

The single “Beitemark” can be downloaded or streamed from a number of digital platforms at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/jordsjo_beitemark

“Pastoralia” sees JORDSJØ  moving  further into a more jazzy, progressive  musical territory as the band creates  an album that is a musical journey that ranges from minimalist mellotron passages to a full on rock tempest.   It is an album based on dreams, a longing for freedom and the fictional place “Pastoralia”, where every day is like tropical nights in Northern Norway, where the forest people dance around campfires.

The album was recorded and produced in its entirety between March and November 2020 in the basement of Bjørnerød Gård in Våler, Østfold by JORDSJØ themselves, and joining the duo on “Pastoralia” are a number of guests including Ola Mile Bruland (ACTIONFREDAG), Håkon Knutzen, Vilde Mortensen Storesund, Mats Lemjan, Christian Meaas Svendsen and Åsa Ree (MEER, TUSMØRKE, WOBBLER).

With artwork by  Sindre Foss Skancke, tracklisting for “Pastoralia” is as follows:

  1. Prolog
  2. Skumring i Karesuando
  3. Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd
  4. Pastoralia
  5. Fuglehviskeren
  6. Beitemark
  7. Vettedans
  8. Jord III

“Pastoralia” will be available in CD, Digital and black Vinyl formats as well as in a blue Vinyl version which will be limited to 600 copies.  It is now available to pre-order from the following:

Fans of Norwegian Prog Rockers  JORDSJØ who are eagerly awaiting the release of “Pastoralia”, the band’s third full-length album, have been offered another glimpse into what to expect with the release of a new single from the album.

Titled “Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd”, the single can be downloaded or streamed from a number of digital platforms at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Jordsjo_MellomMjodurt-Marisko-og-Sostermarihaand

JORDSJØ’s Håkon Oftung  gave us some idea of how the track came about, and the inspiration behind it:

The concept of “Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd” came to me when I was cycling around the eastern part of Norway, near the Swedish border.  It  was written in the summer 2020 on Karlsøy, a small island northwest of Tromsø in northern Norway. Through the music, which is built around two main themes that are connected to each other by three different musical intermezzos,  I tried to capture some sort of lyrical snapshot of each of three places that are very dear to me.  Åsa Ree contributed with both the doubling of the lead vocals and with some beautiful backing harmonies.

In  the tradition of some of last centuries’ best Nordic rock, JORDSJØ’s duo of multi instrumentalist Håkon Oftung (TUSMØRKE, BLACK MAGIC) and drummer Kristian Frøland, meld Progressive rock with interesting melodies, whilst giving the whole a Folk-inspired twist.  And, for  “Pastoralia”, they have  produced an album that is a musical journey that travels from minimalist mellotron passages to a full on rock tempest, and which sees JORDSJØ moving  further into jazzy, progressive,  musical landscapes.

Thematically, the album is based on dreams, a longing for freedom and the fictional place “Pastoralia”, where every day is like tropical nights in Northern Norway, where the forest people dance around campfires.

Joining the duo on “Pastoralia” are a number of guests including Ola Mile Bruland (ACTIONFREDAG), Håkon Knutzen, Vilde Mortensen Storesund, Mats Lemjan, Christian Meaas Svendsen and Åsa Ree (MEER, TUSMØRKE, WOBBLER).

Recorded and produced in its entirety by JORDSJØ between March and November 2020, in the basement of Bjørnerød Gård  in Våler, Østfold, and with artwork by  Sindre Foss Skancke, tracklisting for “Pastoralia” is as follows:

  1. Prolog
  2. Skumring i Karesuando
  3. Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd
  4. Pastoralia
  5. Fuglehviskeren
  6. Beitemark

Not long now before Karisma Records releases “Nordisk Krim” the latest album from Psychedelic Folk Rock Proggers TUSMØRKE, for whom the album has a particular significance, since, having developed a fascination with the subject matter long ago,  it is an album they have dreamt of making for most of their lives.

It was as children visiting in the museums at Moesgaard and Silkeborg that they first laid eyes on the famous Danish Bog Bodies with their orange hair, and where the seeds were sown for the project that was to eventually become “Nordisk Krim”.  As the band explains:

Nordisk Krim, which means Nordic Noir, refers to the fact that the bog bodies were first thought to be a police matter. In reality, the true crime was disturbing the gifts to the gods in their slumber. Nordisk Krim celebrates the willing victims of ancient rites, those whose bodies are in the bog, but whose souls are among the stars in the heavens.

Everyone knows about mummification of bodies in Egypt,  but maybe not everyone knows how the myths and practices surrounding those mummies affected bodies found elsewhere, even when those bodies had mummified due to natural conditions, as was the case in Scandinavia.  So today, with the release of the single “Mumia” TUSMØRKE  gives a glimpse  into the ancient practices, and the myths.

“Mumia” can be streamed or downloaded from a number of services at

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Tusmorke_Mumia

TUSMØRKE  were happy to give us this insight into their own quirky take on the subject of “Mumia”:

Ancient as well as early modern medicine was attracted to anything spectacular as a cure for any ailment, whether it was ingesting mercury against syphilis, smoking herbs up the arse against constipation or drinking aquavit against a common cold. The king of ineffective cures was arguably pulverised mummies, imported from Egypt to treat diverse maladies. Something preserved for five thousand years must be good for something, right?

Egypt was far away from Scandinavia, however, a fact that spawned the questionable business idea of pulverising bog bodies, marketed as mummy powder, or mumia. It can be argued that this was just as effective as the original Egyptian medicine. However, it also turned a number of suffering patients into ghouls. Worth a song, anyway.

The lineup on “Nordisk Krim”  includes  Benediktator (bass & vocals), Krizla (flute & vocals), HlewagastiR (drums), Haugebonden Gode Gullstein (keys) and Åsa Ree (violin), who recorded and produced the whole thing  in Benedikator’s home studio (Det Ytre Rommet). Apart, of course, from some field recordings and some bubble noises recorded in the bathtub (The Bubble Bath of Blood)!

“Nordisk Krim”, which will hit the streets on the 26th February,  is a double concept album coming in at a whopping 82 minutes.  With artwork by Anne Margrete Sjøflot for both the album and all the singles,  track listing is as follows:

  3. Mumia
  4. Cauldron Bog

They’re back. Norway’s most unique and anarchic Psychedelic Folk Rock Proggers TUSMØRKE are back with a brand new album.  And not just any album because “Nordisk Krim” is the fulfilment of a dream as old as TUSMØRKE itself.

As the band explains:

When we formed in 1994, there was a plan to record a concept album about Danish bog bodies. As children, we visited the museums of Moesgaard and Silkeborg, transfixed by the sight of the black bodies with orange hair. Shortly after, we discovered heavy metal. Funny how you can love a genre from the age of 7 and still never learn how to play it.

Or, to quote Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle”:

“Metal is from the earth, he thought as he scrutinized. From below: from that realm which is the lowest, the most dense. Land of trolls and caves, dank, always dark. Yin world, in its most melancholy aspect. World of corpses, decay and collapse. Of faeces. All that has died, slipping and disintegrating back down layer by layer. The daemonic world of the immutable; the time-that-was.”

The title Nordisk Krim (Nordic Crime) refers to the fact that the bog bodies were first thought to be a police matter. In reality, the true crime was disturbing the gifts to the gods in their slumber. Nordisk Krim celebrates the willing victims of ancient rites, those whose bodies are in the bog but whose souls are among the stars in the heavens.

So get ready for a taste of this epic double album because today Karisma Records have released “Age of Iron Man” a single and video taken from the album.

The “Age of Iron Man” single can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/ageofironman

Whilst the video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/Xj-BA1hURB8

The band had this to say about “Age of Iron Man”

Age of Iron Man celebrates ancient rites of pagan Denmark. Elite members  of society would travel to the world of the gods beyond the bog, never  to return. Or would they? Killed thrice by knife, blunt instrument and  rope, submerged in sacred ponds, the bog bodies slept through the  centuries, skin tanned black, hair dyed orange. When they were dug up,  police sought their killers, only to realize they were 1500 years too  late.

For Norwegians, Denmark has always been the  promised land; a place of plenty, of freedom, of rock’n’roll and red  hotdogs. Denmark manages to be the smaller country and yet the older  brother; hip, cool and always closer to Germany than, say Sweden. The  sacrificial cult of the goddess Nerthus was documented by the travelling  historian Gaius Tacitus in 98 and has had a strong pull on
Norwegian  minds ever since. To go to Denmark and lose your worries, your  inhibitions and your head is a trip that never gets old.

The lineup on “Nordisk Krim”  includes  Benediktator (bass & vocals), Krizla (flute & vocals), HlewagastiR (drums), Haugebonden Gode Gullstein (keys) and Åsa Ree (violin), Everything was recorded and produced in Benedikator’s home studio (Det Ytre Rommet), except field recordings and some bubble noises recorded in the bathtub (The Bubble Bath of Blood).

tusmørke video still PR

With their latest release “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 30th November, Norway’s TUSMØRKE have released a video for “Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen” , the opening  track from the album.

The stop motion video by Sondre Bergersen Mæland of Wild Man Movies can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/hqbZ6DauXyg

A
Commenting on the song , TUSMØRKE had this to say:

“Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen”  was written during the winter of 2015 and recorded in Det Ytre Rommet  during 2017 and 2018 by Benediktator. The inspiration for the lyrics came from a folk tale by Asbjørnsen & Moe,  as well as from the legends about children who find  silver under rocks in the wilderness. There are stories of poor people stepping on stones and hearing the clang of metal and finding buried and forgotten treasure. There are also stories of people hearing the sound, only to realise later what it must have been and going on the spend the rest of their lives searching for the spot, never to find it again and driven mad with frustration and the lust for coin.

“Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” itself is a a concept album that explores the rich history and mythology of Norway’s capital city Oslo. Vardøger are premonitions that precede an actual event. Utburder are infants who are abandoned in the woods at birth and whose haunting cries reverberate eerily through the night .

TUSMØRKE describe “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” as “the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted”, and, as the “vol 1” part of its title suggests, the album  is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.  It will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition vinyl formats with the  first LP being released on transparent orange vinyl (limited to 700 copies) with a 4 page lyric booklet and an A2 poster.

With artwork by the renowned Norwegian artist Arne Bendik Sjur  “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1”, is available to pre-order in all formats from https://tusm-rke.bandcamp.com/album/osloborgerlig-tusm-rke-vard-ger-og-utburder-vol-1
