LARS FREDRIK FRØISLIE, keyboard player for Prog Rockers WOBBLER is set to release his debut solo album “Fire Fortellinger” on Karisma Records on the 2nd June.

Comprised of four tunes, each one telling its own story, “Fire Fortellinger” came about during the pandemic when Frøislie was forced to isolate like everyone else, and chose to make this time as productive as possible. Explaining how the album was conceived and the inspiration that was behind it Frøislie had this to say:

During the pandemic, I dreamed myself back in time, and consumed music, art and literature from the old days. The music is characterized by this, and inspiration is drawn from, among other things, Snorre Sturlason, Vinternatt i Rondane and Markens Grøde. It is both a search back to an apparently more primitive time; as well as a quest back to nature and away from civilization and people.

I took many trips out to Raknehaugen in Romerike, as well as trips to an old cottage in Heidal and the home districts of Ringerike (with its many Viking graves and magical landscapes), and this can also be heard in the music.

Frøislie has also completed the first part of a video series in which he describes the making of “Fire Fortellinger” and it can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/qApnt1EGBvM

Had it not been for the pandemic, much of the material on “Fire Fortellinger” would probably have been earmarked for a new WOBBLER album, with English lyrics and subjected to the revisions that are inevitable when a band gets together over new material. However, given that the circumstances dictated that he would have to work on the material alone, Frøislie was able to keep his material as spontaneous as possible, without having to put it through too many rounds of processing.

He has thus succeeded in preserving the impulsiveness of the original, and, as a consequence, much of what the audience gets to hear is improvised and recorded in one take, thereby maintaining the hands-on human aspect with an avoidance of click tracks, auto-tune, MIDI or too much technology.

With a sound that draws its inspiration from 70s prog rock, especially from Italy, Norwegian 90s black metal, British rock and heavy metal  from the 60s and 70s, as well as folk music, jazz and psychedelic rock, “Fire Fortellinger” finds Frøislie on vocals and drums, and availing himself of a formidable array of instruments including Ludwig drums and a few tons of old analogue keyboards including Hammond C3, Mellotron M400, Minimoog Model D, Chamberlin M-1, Yamaha CP70B, William de Blaise spinet, Hohner Clavinet D6, Rhodes MkII and an Arp Pro Soloist. With him is Nikolai Hængsle (ELEPHANT9, NEEDLEPOINT, BIGBANG, BAND OF GOLD etc.) on Rickenbacker, Fender Jazz Bass, Fender Precision and Fender Telecaster Bass.

The album artwork is by Frøislie himself and “Fire Fortellinger” will be available in CD, Limited Edition LP and Digital formats. Track listing is as follows:

01. Rytter av dommedag
02. Et sted under himmelhvelvet
03. Jærtegn
04. Naturens katedral

For those wishing to delve deeper into the stories behind each track, Frøislie was happy to oblige:

The first song “Rytter av dommedag” is themed around Ragnarok, when King Rakne awakens in his large burial mound outside Romerike and, together with the old gods, creates real mischief.

The second song “Et sted under himmelhvelvet” is dreamy, possibly set in a Renaissance garden near Florence or Arcadia. But in principle it can be anywhere where it feels good to be. It is partly about travelling to a place and feeling that you have been there before – only to find out that you had ancestors who lived there long ago.

The third song “Jærtegn” opens in a frenzy, with a horse and cart speeding through the forest. The wagon overturns at the same time as there is a solar eclipse, and the riders become eternal wanderers in the dark forest, only visible to us now and then like the northern lights, as they vainly stretch their arms towards the sun in the hope of finding their way home.

The final song “Naturens Katedral” is a depiction of the Norwegian mountains in winter where the cold is bitter, and blizzards and avalanches abound. It is also a search for bygone times when life was more basic out in the wilderness.

With “Variola Vera”,  their second full-length studio release, Psychedelic Rockers HIMMELLEGEME have come up with an album that uses heavy riffs, chilling melodies, and melancholy-laden lyrics to create a timeless sound that is dark and otherworldly.  Highly appropriate for an album whose underlying theme is the impact that humans have had on this planet of ours.

As a final taste of what “Variola Vera” has to offer fans ahead of its October 1 release, Karisma Records have today released a fourth and final single from the album.  Titled “Agafia”, the track can be streamed or downloaded from various services at:

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Himmellegeme_Agafia

It is a single about which the band, whose influence,  drawn from both Blues and Atmospheric Prog Rock,  is undeniable, had this to say:

“Agafia” is a track where the name and lyrical content are based on Agafia Lykova, the Russian woman who has been living alone in the inhospitable Russian wilderness since the late 80s. She was  a part of a family who had been forced to flee government persecution because they had not wanted  to be a part of their new ideologies.  It’s about how she is forced to live more like modern humans, being torn between a more modern life and her fear of God and the society that left her.

Musically the song started its life as a loop Hein made with some delays, and then it just kept building up to what it is today. We wanted to make it sound epic, like a scene from a movie. This feeling is best described in the outro of the track.

Recorded  from late spring through to the  late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio, “Variola Vera”  was produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also handled the mixing and the mastering for HIMMELLEGEME’ s lineup of Aleksander Vormestrand (vocals, guitar), Hein Alexander Olson (lead guitar, slide, drums), Lauritz Isaksen (keys), Erik Alfredsen (bass, backing vocals, misc. instruments) and Leiv Martin Green (drums, backing vocals).

HIMMELLEGEME are quite adamant that although “Variola Vera” does indeed have a very definite theme running through it, it is not quite in the realms of a concept album, as the band explained:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se – the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints.

“Variola Vera” will be available in CD, Digital, and Limited Edition LP Formats, and it is now available to pre-order from:

  6. Caligula

Psychedelic Rockers HIMMELLEGEME dip a toe into the waters of history for the third single taken from their upcoming sophomore full-length album “Variola Vera”.  And their chosen subject is none other than one of the notorious, if not the most notorious, of the Roman emperors,  Caligula himself.

Why, you might be asking, has a Norwegian band chosen this well-known miscreant as the subject matter for a track on “Variola Vera”?   Well, it would seem that HIMMELLEGEME see something of themselves, and us, in his flawed character, as the band’s Alexander Vormestrand explains:

So, “Caligula” is a weird one that required an unconventional method of writing from me. Melodically we drew some inspiration from some of our favourite contemporary music, such as AIMING FOR ENRIKE and ULVER, as well as KEVIN PARKER, while lyrically I was inspired by the Roman emperor Caligula. There are so many phases of this person’s life that makes him an interesting character. Many people might even find similarities from their own youth – from being a benevolent boy to becoming a horrible young man. Most of us have phases growing up, so I had to kinda get in character with this one, which may or may not have included lit candles and a “bucket o’crazy” in the middle of the night while my girlfriend slept. The verses depict Caligula  going through different phases, while the chorus is about him finding peace while he gets closer to the end of his life.

“Caligula” can be streamed or downloaded from a number of services at:

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Himmellegeme_Caligula

Drawing their influence from both Blues and Atmospheric Prog Rock, HIMMELLEGEME’s lineup of  Aleksander Vormestrand (vocals, guitar), Hein Alexander Olson (lead guitar, slide, drums), Lauritz Isaksen (keys), Erik Alfredsen (bass, backing vocals, misc. instruments) and Leiv Martin Green (drums, backing vocals), have come up with a second studio release that is, according to them, not quite a concept album, but which does, nevertheless, have a theme running through it:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se – the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints.

By using heavy-hitting riffs, chilling melodies and melancholic lyrics, HIMMELLEGEME have, on “Variola Vera”, created a dark, otherworldly, and timeless sound which was recorded  from late spring through to the  late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio. The  album was produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also handled the mixing and the mastering.

As the time ticks down to the October 1 release of HIMMELLEGEME’s sophomore full-length “Variola Vera”, Karisma Records have released another single and accompanying video from the album to whet the appetite of the band’s growing fan-base.

The track chosen glories in the title of “Blowing Raspberries” about which the band have this to say:

“Blowing Raspberries”  was also one of the earlier tracks written for this release. Aleksander brought the band a short demo, sort of as a joke. It wasn’t like anything he’d written before, but we quickly realized it had the potential to be a banger. Lyrically the subject is written as a space cop drama set in the future. Both lyrically and musically there are some hints pointing to a certain decade – or time period – so, put your down on and shake your bones loose!

“Blowing Raspberries” can be downloaded or streamed from a number of services at:

Recorded from late spring through to the  late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio, “Variola Vera” is the follow-up to HIMMELLEGEME’s critically acclaimed debut “Myth of Earth”, an album that brought the band to the attention of prog audiences world-wide.

Produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also mixed and mastered the album, “Variola Vera” is, according to the band, “not quite a concept album” as they recently explained:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. With just over a month to go until the release of “In the Hollow of a Wave”, the third full-length album from Norwegian Rockers MONSTEREO, Karisma Records have today released a new single taken from the album.   Titled “Wings I: Everlasting Darkness”, the band had this to say about it:

“Wings I” is the soundtrack of supersonic spacetravel. A modern take on the 70s progressive rock. With obligatory duelling guitars, rumbling organs, several high pitched vocal tracks and spaced-out-synthesizers. A cacophony of sound culminating in a rock’n roll banger that pushes the pop format to the edge of outer space.

“Wings I: Everlasting Darkness” can be download or streamed from a variety of services at

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Monstereo_WingsIEverlastingDarkness

Whilst the lyric video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/x-TnCVFMQUk

For over a decade now MONSTEREO’s lineup of Ola Utaaker Segadal on lead vocals and electric guitars, Øyvind Aase Fluge on electric guitars, Jørgen Stangeland Bach on Bass guitar, and Jon Bolstad on Drums have been delighting fans with their energy-filled rock songs.

And, for “In the Hollow of a Wave”, MONSTEREO have used that energy to great effect, producing an album that is filled to the brim with the band’s trademark catchy melodies, heavy riffs and big sound,  all of which are seamlessly combined with exploratory instrumental sections that lead the listener towards a euphoric climax.

The sound on “In the Hollow of a Wave”,  is far richer, and more broad,  than anything  the band has come up with before.  With the deft  use of more keyboards, synths, and a variety of guitars, MONSTEREO have, without a doubt,  produced their heaviest album to date, which,  according to the band, is filled with “teeth-grinding riffs, big choruses and rock-solid grooves”.

With artwork by Robert Høyem, track listing for “In the Hollow of a Wave” is as follows:

  1. Third Eye Seeing
  2. A Sudden Rush
  3. Wings I: Everlasting Darkness
  4. Jigsaw
  5. Witness
  6. Wings II: Beyond Horizons
  7. Wings III: Icarus
  8. Golden

Bergen’s Psychedelic Rockers HIMMELLEGEME are back with “Variola Vera”, the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut album “Myth of Earth”.   Recorded during the late spring through late fall of 2020 at Bergen’s Broen Studio, the band’s latest outing was produced by Anders Bjelland (ELECTRIC EYE / HYPERTEXT) who also mixed and mastered the album.

Not quite a concept album HIMMELLEGEME described “Variola Vera” thus:

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we leave in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se – the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints.

Set for release on Karisma Records on the 1st October, in CD, Digital and Limited Edition LP formats, fans have today been given a taste of “Variola Vera” with the release of the single “Let the Mother Burn” which can be downloaded or streamed on various platforms at:

https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Himmellegeme_Let-the-mother-burn

It is a single about which the band had this to say:

Let The Mother Burn was one of the first tracks that we wrote for the album. It definitely has our sound to it – a little slow paced, but also powerful and tribal. The lyrics are about being consumed by the sheer beauty and horrors that Mother Nature can provide us – it can be amazing, but also quite frightening.

Influenced by both Blues and Atmospheric Prog Rock, HIMMELLEGEME’s lineup of  Aleksander Vormestrand (vocals, guitar), Hein Alexander Olson (lead guitar, slide, drums), Lauritz Isaksen (keys), Erik Alfredsen (bass, backing vocals, misc. instruments), Leiv Martin Green (drums, backing vocals), use heavy-hitting riffs, chilling melodies and melancholic lyrics, to create a dark, otherworldly, and timeless sound.

“Wide Awake but Still Asleep”, which hits the street on Karisma Records today, 29th May, is the second full-length album from the Norwegians, whose 2016 debut album “Crystals” brought them to the attention of Prog fans world-wide, who were impressed not only by the band’s studio output, but also by their live performances,  and their skill at  blending  60s and 70s psychedelia with progressive rock.

Produced by ENSLAVED’s  Iver Sandøy  at the Solslottet Studio, and with cover design by Maja Markegård and photography by Tom Wøbbekind, track listing for “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is as follows:

  1. Wide Awake but Still Asleep

The band, whose  lineup  comprises Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen on vocals and guitar, Jard Hole on drums, Ole-Andreas Sæbø Jensen on  bass, and Jonas Særsten on keyboards,  have lost none of that SHAMAN ELPHANT charm for which they are known, but they have reached a new maturity in terms of  their song writing and playing, as well as having developed a greater focus on who they are and what they want from their music.   Commenting recently on “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”,  the band had this to say:

With this album we feel like we have found out who we want to be as a band. Whilst the first album was going in all directions, this album feels more focused and mature. “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is our attempt at making the melodies move like butterflies while the grooves sting like killer bees.

With the release of their second full-length album “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” on the horizon, Norwegian Prog Rockers SHAMAN ELEPHANT have taken the track “Ease of Mind” and released it as a single, which can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Shaman_Elephant-Ease_Of_Mind

Commenting on the track, SHAMAN ELEPHANT, whose debut album “Crystals” brought them a lot of attention from Prog fans, had this to say:

“Ease of Mind” is  possibly one of the songs that has taken us the most time, and attempts, to finish. It started off as a rock song but after some playing it shape-shifted into a kind of West Coast Jazz thing. Still not being completely satisfied we changed it again, into what it is now a kind of rock/folk song with compulsive cactus-prog disorder.

SHAMAN ELEPHANT’s  lineup of Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen on vocals and guitar, Jard Hole on drums, Ole-Andreas Sæbø Jensen on  bass, and Jonas Særsten on keyboards,  demonstrates an uncanny ability to blend 60s and 70s psychedelia with progressive rock. A skill that has impressed Prog fans both with the band’s studio output as well as live on stage.

With “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”,  the band has retained that quintessential SHAMAN ELEPHANT charm, whilst demonstrating a new maturity in terms of song writing and  musicianship.  As their recent comment on the album attests:

With this album we feel like we have found out who we want to be as a band. Whilst the first album was going in all directions, this album feels more focused and mature. “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is our attempt at making the melodies move like butterflies while the grooves sting like killer bees.

Set for release on Karisma Records on the 29th May,  “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” ” will be available in CD, LP (both Black and Transparent Orange vinyl versions) and Digital formats and  is now available to pre-order from the following:

Understated is definitely not an adjective that can be applied to Norwegian Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE whose latest album “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is set for release on Karisma Records on the 29th November.

Based on two musicals for children, “The Bridge to the Other Side” and “The Root of All Evil”, “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne”, which translated means “Games for children, rituals for adults”, consists partly of  Tusmørke’s take on traditional Norwegian children’s songs,  and partly on new material by the  band. And, whilst waiting for its release, Karisma Records have lifted the veil on what we can expect, by releasing a single from the album.

The single, with artwork by the legendary Thore Hansen, happens to be the opening track “Bro bro brille” and it can be streamed and downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Tusmorke_Bro_Bro_Brille

The album itself will be available in CD, Digital, Black Vinyl and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, all of which include a 16 page lyric booklet, which, according to the band, “May, or may not, explain the plot”.

With artwork by Thore Hansen, track listing for “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is as follows:

  1. Bro bro brille                      9. Velkommen til Hades
  2. Per Sjuspring                     10. Kharons vise
  3. Kjerringa med staven      11. På den ytterste nakne øya
  4. Ta den ring                         12.Jeg gikk meg over sjø og land
  5. Tornerose                           13. Den tolvte Baal
  6. Bjørnen sover                    14. Gamlas seierssang
  7. På Torneroses slot            15. Eventyret er ute
  8. Sjubidubidu Sju                16. Du og jeg og vi to

TUSMØRKE’s lineup is drawn  from bands like WOBBLER, JORDSJØ and ALWANZATAR, and, in keeping with the band’s innate eccentricity, the variety of instruments they have at their command is staggering, with Benediktator on Bass, vocals, Glockenspiel and percussion, Krizla on Flute, vocals, electronics and percussion,  The Phenomenon Marxo Solinas on Minimoog Model D, Korg CX3, William de Blaise on harpsichord, Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, Mellotron M400, Hammond C3, Wurlitzer 200 and Solina String Ensemble, and HlewagastiR on Drums and percussion.

The band  happily admit that:

Not everyone who took part in the plays completely understood what they were doing. Neither did everyone in the audience.  But here it is, in all its gory glory as the collegium of dashing adventurers and explorers of the unknown reaches of history, known to the unwashed masses under the pseudonym TUSMØRKE, have yet again brought fresh fever from the stars.

With no small risk to their very lives, they have investigated the Mesopotamian idolatry that hid beneath what we, in our innocence, thought were simple songs and verses concerned with harmless folklore and creatures of fantasy. Concealed by a veil of ignorance, these ritualistic rhymes and summoning songs reveal themselves as portals to blissful and terrible realms. Astral worlds and delirious peaks tread forth from the inner places of mankind, and thus exert their power over the reality we share in our waking hours.

Our rhymes, riddles and games for children contain ancient elements. Could one find traces of past religious rituals in them? Seemingly innocent texts gain a more foreboding aspect when viewed in light of the human sacrifices, spiritual journeys and ecstatic trance rituals of Europe in times past. Cultural traits that are today associated with exotic voodoo rituals, Buddhism or cannibalistic head hunters of New Guinea were once widespread among our Celtic and Germanic tribes.

Formed in 2013, LUCY IN BLUE released their self-titled debut  album via Bandcamp in 2016, and,  since then,  the band has been stunning crowds in their native Iceland with their soaring guitar solos and intense build-ups,  taking their audiences  for a ride through the psychedelic soundscapes and the progressive song writing styles of the 1970’s.

Finally, with the release of “In Flight” a much wider audience will be able to see LUCY IN BLUE’s  Arnaldur Ingi Jónsson on Keyboards and vocals, Kolbeinn Þórsson on Drums, Matthías Hlífar Mogensen on  Bass and vocals, and Steinþór Bjarni Gíslason on guitar and vocals in action, when they hit the stage at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, on the 14th April.
