Dark Essence Records, a label well known for working with some of the top Norwegian acts such as TAAKE, have cast their net a little further from their own shores this time, and signed Greece’s LUCIFER’s CHILD, the band formed by ROTTING CHRIST and former CHAOSTAR member George Emmanuel and NIGHTFALL’s Stathis Ridis.

Emmanuel and Ridis first formed the band in Athens, Greece,  in 2013, with the aim of performing the kind of music that would serve as a spiritual introduction to the atmospheric world of a Summoning.  LUCIFER’S CHILD sets out to create a unity between the music itself and the spiritual idea behind each song that they present to their audience, and, it is that  ritualistic energy, combined with the electrifying sound of Black Metal,  that characterises the band’s own sound.

Aside from George Emmanuel on guitars and Stathis Ridis on bass, LUCIFER’S CHILD’s lineup also includes Marios Dupont on vocals and Nick Vell on drums.   The band’s debut album “The Wiccan” was recorded during the summer of 2014 in Athens, and Dark Essence Records anticipate its release later this year.

NORWEGIAN BLACK METALLERS TAAKE SET TO EMBARK ON THEIR FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

EXTREME METALLERS BLUTMOND HINT AT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THEIR FOURTH FULL-LENGTH ALBUM

Since the release of their third full length album “The Revolution is Dead!”  in 2012, BLUTMOND have been busy on the live circuit with various club and festival appearances and a tour with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and DORDEDUH under their belts, as well as a lineup change that saw two new members join the band.  However, despite all this activity,  things may have seemed a little quiet on the new album front.

But things are rarely what they seem, and today the Swiss Extreme Metallers have issued an update on how things are progressing, and what fans can look forward to when it comes to the band’s fourth full-length album.  “It has been very quiet around us” states BLUTMOND guitarist John,  ” I can’t deny that I had some trouble finding the muse again for the new album, something that obviously  drove me insane. But since the tour I’m back in the game and let me assure you we’re freaking cooking.

“Since we’re not currently signed to a label for this album, we weren’t really under any time constrictions, but my personal goal was to finish writing the demo tracks by  the end

of March and we’re now in the pre-recording  stage.  Compared  to “The Revolution is Dead!”, the music on the new album will have  much less of a polished Hollywood movie feel about it, and  way more of a Ground Zero adventure.  It’s going to be VERY dark, whilst still retaining the hallmarks of what we have done previously, but  don’t expect any “True Norwegian Black Metal” vibes.  We have grown so much as songwriters,  and we’ve learned so many things over the last few years, and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s reaction when they hear what we’ve been working on”.

Formed in Olten, Switzerland in 2004, BLUTMOND released their debut full length album, “Endzeit”, in 2006. With a growing reputation for insane and provocative live shows, the band’s profile was raised not only in the Swiss underground but throughout Europe as well, but, whilst their reputation grew, so did the realisation that musically the band wanted to expand their horizons away from the Black Metal they had originally set out to play.  The sophomore full-length album, “Thirteen Urban Ways 4 Groovy Bohemian Days” appeared in 2010 and set the band on a more avant-garde path, but one that had a distinctive edge to it.

BLUTMOND’s lineup today includes  John (TOTGEBURT, Session ANNA MURPHY) on vocals and guitars, Jerry (ex EISTHRON, TOTENWINTER, TOTGEBURT) on vocals and bass,  Marc (SCHAMMASCH) on sax and guitars, Simon (ex FRAGMENTS OF FAITH, IN FREQUENCY) on guitars, and Fabio (KHALDERA) on drums and samples.  The band’s next live appearance will be at Le Manoir Pub in Saint-Maurice, Valais, Switzerland on the 23 May.

BLACK-FOLK METALLERS SELVANS REVEAL TITLE AND BEGIN WORK ON DEBUT FULL-LENGTH ALBUM

Fresh from releasing their debut EP, the five-track “Clangores Plenilunio” on Avantgarde Music, Italian Black Folk Metallers SELVANS have announced that they have begun recording the band’s first full-length album .   Work on the album is expected to be completed by the summer, and released on Avantgarde Music in late 2015. To be titled “Lupercalia”, the album will be made up of 5 suites lasting in total around an hour.  The suites have been inspired and influenced by ancient Italian history and folklore.  It will be very much a continuation of what was started with “Clangores Plenilunio”, whose music is filled with the Italic spirit and redolent with its mysticism. SELVANS rose from the ashes DRAUGR , who called it a day after ten years at the top of the Italian scene.  The band’s lineup  is composed of former DRAUGR members Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and programming,  and  Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.  The two musicians form the core of SELVANS and bring in session musicians for live appearances.  “Clangores Plenilunio” is the band’s tribute to founder member and friend, the much respected drummer Jonny Morelli, whose tragic death in a motor bike accident meant the EP was to be his last ever contribution to the music world. A never-before heard track from “Lupercalia” will be debuted live on the 3rd of May when SELVANS supports NECROPHOBIC at Tipografia in Pescara. THE 3RD ATTEMPT, THE NEW BAND FROM FORMER CARPATHIAN FOREST GUITARISTS, SET TO ENTER THE STUDIO IN APRIL

Former CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort and Bloodpervertor certainly hit the ground running when they formed their new band THE 3rd ATTEMPT.  In under a year they have managed to audition musicians and get themselves a fully rehearsed lineup which made its live debut at one of Norway’s biggest festivals,  sifted through a selection of offers from labels before settling on Dark Essence Records,  and have written and prepared all the material for their debut full-length album.

And,  April 17th will see them enter the Dub Studio in Oslo, to begin recording their new album with producer Endre Kirkesola, who has worked with bands such as BLOOD RED THRONE, CHROME DIVISION, URGEHAL, TSJUDER, GREEN CARNATION, CARPATHIAN FOREST.  Aside from working with some of Norway’s greats in the studio, Kirkesola is also THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s live sound engineer, a job he also performed for IMMORTAL.

“We are really looking forward to begin recording the album,” commented guitarist Tchort.  “The whole process of setting up the band and getting on stage for the first time with THE 3rd ATTEMPT has been a real boost, not just in terms of creativity, but also in terms of a renewed enthusiasm for performing.  It was a boost we had really been in dire need of over the past few years”.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS SIGNS NORWEGIAN BLACK METALLERS ORKAN

Bergen-based Dark Essence Records, one of the fastest growing and most respected Norwegian labels,  have announced the signing of Black Metallers ORKAN, and are set to release the band’s sophomore full-length album “Livlaus” later this year.

ORKAN’s four-man lineup was formed in 2008 by TAAKE’s live guitarist Gjermund Fredheim and ex- BYFROST drummer Rune Nesse.  Having been joined by former GRIMNORTH  bassist Sindre Hillesdal and frontman Einar Fjelldal (ex-GRAVEMACHINE),  ORKAN released their debut full-length album “Crimson Canvas” in 2012.

Whilst “Crimson Fields” is, as described by the band, “a self-financed, thrashy album”, ORKAN have left this sound behind them and taken their musical vision in a much darker direction, taking the classic Norwegian Black Metal sound and incorporating into it influences from many other genres, to create atmospheric melodies with haunting vocals and intense blastbeats.

KARISMA RECORDS REVEALS DETAILS AND ARTWORK OF UPCOMING ALBUM FROM PROG ROCKERS MAGIC PIE

Fresh from inking a deal with Norwegian Prog Rockers MAGIC PIE, Karisma Records have today announced details of what will be the band’s fourth full length album, which is set for release on the 25th of May in CD and digital formats, and, at a later date, on vinyl.  Titled “King For A Day”,  the album was mixed and mastered by Rich Mouser (SPOCKS BEARD, TRANSATLANTIC, NEAL MORSE, DREAM THEATER etc.) at The Mouse House Studios in Los Angeles,  and contains six tracks of melodic, epic, and, on occasion, heavy, Prog Rock, that showcases superb vocal harmonies and skilled musicianship .  Artwork for the album is by Chris van der Linden of Linden Artworks.

With a lineup that consists of songwriter and producer Kim Stenberg on guitars and vocals,  lyricist and melody co-writer Eirikur Hauksson (well known for his work with artists such as ARTCH, KEN HENSLEY and KERRS PINK)  on lead vocals and guitar, Eirik Hanssen on vocals and guitar, Jan Torkild Johannessen on drums,  Erling Henanger on keyboards and backing vocals and Lars Petter Holstad on bass and backing vocals, MAGIC PIE was formed in Moss, Norway in 2001.  The band’s blend of Classic Prog and ’70’s Hard Rock,  inspired by bands such as SPOCKS BEARD, DREAM THEATER, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, THE FLOWER KINGS, TRANSATLANTIC, KANSAS, DEEP PURPLE, YES etc., has made MAGIC PIE a household name on the Prog Rock scene, and “King For A Day” is a much anticipated album amongst fans.

MAGIC PIE will play two shows in Norway to celebrate the release of “King For A Day”, the first being  at the Parkteatret in Moss on the 13th May and the second at We Låve Rock In Hurum 2015 at the Holm Gård in Holmsbu, on the 23 May.  Additional live and festival appearances will be announced soon.

SUCHTHAUS RELEASES MAYHEM TRIBUTE VIDEO

Norway’s SUCHTHAUS, the band that defies genre type casting and for whom visuals play as big a role as the music itself, has released a tribute to the iconic Black Metal band MAYHEM, in the form of a video cover of the track “Life Eternal” from what is probably MAYHEM’s most famous album, 1994’s “De Misteriis Dom Sathanas”.   The cover features SUCHTHAUS members Spacebrain on vocals, Ingvar the Last Viking on guitars, Fruen on the organ, and Hellhammer, who is of course himself one of the original members of MAYHEM, on drums.  The video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/44AbpTyWWiU

Whilst it may not come as a surprise that a band has recorded a MAYHEM cover, it is, in this case, more appropriate than the usual run of the mill tribute, given that SUCHTHAUS founder SPACEBRAIN, is the man behind many of MAYHEM’s most recognisable stage sets.   A renowned sculptor, as well as a musician, SPACEBRAIN had this to say about the tribute:

“Mayhem has survived hell for 30 years, and I was fortunate to play  a part during a few of those years, touring through Europe with the art of SPACEBRAIN from 2000-2006. This is a period of my life I will never forget, neither the good nor the bad experiences,  and  therefore SUCHTHAUS decided to put in some hard work to try to recreate the soundtrack that got stuck in my head: “Life Eternal”.   It´s far from a straight cover, but our vision was a way of thanking the men who let me be a part of their life (in alphabetical order) Atilla, Blasphemer, Hellhammer, Maniac, Necrobutcher”.

SUCHTHAUS is currently working putting the finishing touches on the band’s sophomore album “Motorbrain”, which, once finished, will be released on SUCHTHAUS’ own label Rollabigone.   Guests on the album incude SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth.

“Motorbrain” will be the follow up to SUCHTHAUS’ debut  album “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, which included collaborations from musicians such as Maniac  (SKITLIV, ex-MAYHEM),   CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Fredrik A. Juell  (BURNING RUBBER,  BERSERK BASTARDS) and singer Sibob Jawara, and showed clearly how difficult it is to squeeze the band into any particular genre.   Whilst “Motorbrain” promises to be a much more “metal” album, it will definitely not be a “straight up” metal album, and the band is at pains to point out that it does not reflect  any direction that they have any  intention of following in the future.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS will once again be showcasing some of its bands at Inferno Festival this year, with a lineup that includes TAAKE, GALAR, KRAKOW and MOMENTUM –  all bands who have recently released new albums on what is one of Norway’s most respected and growing labels.  The event will take place on Wednesday the 1st of April at Blå in Oslo, Norway.

For fans of  Norwegian Black Metal TAAKE needs no introduction.  After more than two decades of writing and performing his Helnorsk Svartmetall, frontman and founder Hoest still produces music which, whilst staying true to its roots,  manages to remain fresh, original and relevant in a genre that  is sadly lacking in all three attributes these days.    The band released its sixth full-length album  “Stridens hus” in December of last year, and proved once again that Hoest has lost none of his intensity and unpredictability, either in the studio or on the stage.

With their third full-length album “De gjenlevende” barely over a week old, GALAR is a Black-Folk Metal  band that is not scared to use non-traditional metal instruments including both a string quintet and a horn quartet.  These unusual elements are ideally suited to the epic nature of the six-track concept album and to the band’s music in general. GALAR’s  founders M. Kristiansen (screams, guitars and bass) and A. B. Lauritzen (clean vocals, bassoon and grand piano) recently announced that they had expanded the band’s lineup to include drummer Tomas Myklebust (ex-EMANCER, live session drums with VULTURE INDUSTRIES and VRIED), and have also added live session member Pól Nolsøe Jespersen on lead guitars.  Inferno Festival will be the first time fans will get a chance to see the new lineup on stage.

Formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005, and their third full-length album “amaran” released in February of this year, KRAKOW’s lineup of highly skilled and experienced musicians consists of Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR) on vocals and bass,  and Ask Ty Arctander (KAMPFAR) on drums.   The Experimental Post Rockers will be back on the Blå stage with their dark, melodic and mysterious music, perfectly performed with the band’s usual intensity and dynamism.

Making their DARK ESSENCE RECORDS debut at Inferno this year will be one of the label’s more recent signings, Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM, whose sophomore full length album “The Freak is Alive” was also released in February.  MOMENTUM’s blend of atmospheric Post-Rock is reminiscent of Isis and Cult of Luna, with a Neurosis-esque level of bone-crushing heaviness interspersed with soft vocals and relaxed clean passages.  The band’s lineup consists of frontman Holaf, the man responsible for both MOMENTUM’s  lyrics and artwork, on vocals, bass and sitar, Ingvar Sæmundsson on guitar and vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on drums, and Sigurður Árni Jónsson on guitar and vocals.

KARISMA RECORDS INK DEAL WITH PROG ROCKERS MAGIC PIE

Karisma Records have inked a deal with Norwegian Prog Rockers MAGIC PIE, and are set to release the band’s fourth full-length album on the 25th May.  As well as the new album, information about which will be released shortly, Karisma will also be re-issuing the band’s three previous albums – 2005’s “Motions of Desire”, 2007’s “Circus of Life” and 2011’s “The Suffering Joy” –  later this year in both CD format, and, for the first time, in vinyl format as well.

Formed in 2001 in Moss, Norway, MAGIC PIE has become a household name to Prog fans around the world with their blend of Classic Prog and Hard Rock inspired by bands such as SPOCKS BEARD, DREAM THEATER, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, THE FLOWER KINGS, TRANSATLANTIC, KANSAS, DEEP PURPLE, YES etc.

MAGIC PIE’s lineup consists of songwriter and producer Kim Stenberg on guitars and vocals,  lyricist and melody co-writer Eirikur Hauksson on lead vocals and guitar, Eirik Hanssen on vocals and guitar, Jan Torkild Johannessen on drums,  Erling Henanger on keyboards and backing vocals and Lars Petter Holstad on bass and backing vocals.  It’s a lineup where experience and superb musicianship combine to create epic prog rock with top notch vocal harmonies.
