Fans of Atmospheric Prog Rock will have something to look forward to on the 3rd of May, because that’s the date that Karisma Records will release “A Storm is Coming”, the latest album from BJORN RIIS,  also known as the co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist of Norwegian Prog Rockers AIRBAG.

And, as a taster of what’s to come, Karisma have today released “Icarus”,  a single of a track from the album, and about which Riis had this to say:

Icarus” is based on a chord progression that I had lying around, and which seemed to fit the more stripped down, rock production that I had in mind for the new album. The title refers to the old Greek tale about Icarus flying too close to the sun and getting burned. This hubris is translated to a relationship between two people where one is constantly being burned for trying too much.

I’m very proud of the vocals on this one and I think we managed to create a sound that’s, at least for me, a bit different to what I’ve done on previous albums. “Icarus” features Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums and Kristian Hultgren (WOBBLER) on bass.”

“Icarus” can be streamed or downloaded at the following:

A follow up to 2017’s critically acclaimed “Coming Home” MLP, “A Storm is Coming” will be the third full-length album from Riis, and promises to be heavier, but at the same time more tender, than his previous releases. It is formed of six epic songs, clocking in at 51 minutes, and is built around the central themes of human relations and loss, written as a dialogue between two people.

Recorded at the Subsonic Society in Oslo, and majestically combining the art of rock, prog and atmospheric pop, “A Storm is Coming” was mixed by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (WHITE WILLOW, THE OPIUM CARTEL).

In addition to Bjørn Riis on vocals, guitars and a wide variety of instruments, the album features performances by Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums, Simen Valldal Johannessen (OAK) on keys, Ole Michael Bjørndal on guitar, and Mimmi Tamba on guest vocals.

With artwork by Asle Tostrup,  tracklisting on “A Storm is Coming” is as follows:

1 When Rain Falls
2. Icarus
3. You And Me
4. Stormwatch
5. This House
6. Epilogue

Oak PR1

Adding yet another string to their already impressive Progressive bow, Karisma Records have inked a deal with OAK,  and will release the band’s sophomore full-length album “False Memory Archive” on the 19th October.

In anticipation of the release, Karisma have debuted  the first track from the album “We, the Drowned” which can be heard below and at http://oakinoslo.bandcamp.com/album/false-memory-archive

A
Starting life as a folk-rock duo, OAK’s current lineup of Simen Valldal Johannessen on vocals, piano, keys and lyrics, Sigbjørn Reiakvam on bass, acoustic / electric guitars, banjo, keys and programming, and Øystein Sootholtet on Drums, percussion, programming and keys, come from a diverse background that spans classical piano to electronica, prog- and hard-rock, and includes references to the alternative scene as well as progressive rock.   The pulling together of all these different elements and skills helped create the rather unique OAK sound, and resulted in the 2013 release of the band’s debut album “Lighthouse”.

Oak PR2

It’s now five years later, and OAK are back with “False Memory Archive”, which, with its nods in the direction of “Lighthouse”, make it a natural continuation of their debut. Meticulously crafted, with an increased use of electronics and low bass frequencies, “False Memory Archive” is both darker and groovier that its predecessor, whilst still maintaining that familiar Oak sound, which is neither wholly progressive pop, nor progressive rock, but a happy amalgam of both.

Having  taken several steps both as songwriters and musicians, OAK have succeeded in producing a sophomore album that  ended up in a slightly darker and more progressive territory, but one in which the light still shines through in the shape of catchy elements and stunning vocal harmonies, which create that unique duality that defines them as a band.

Recorded in Oslo at the Ljugekroken Studio and the Tøyen Church, “False Memory Archive” was  mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren and Oak at the Fascination Studios.  With front cover artwork by  Lisa Love and design by Deformat, and featuring a guest appearance on guitars by Bjorn Riis, tracklisting for “False Memory Archive” is as follows:

  1. We, The Drowned
  2. Claire De Lune
  3. False Memory Archuve
  4. Lost Causes (Bjorn Riis guesting on guitar)
  5. Intermezzo
  6. The Lights
  7. These Are The Stars We’re Aiming For
  8. Transparent Eyes
  9. Psalm 51

Bjorn Riis PR

With the 23rd February set for the release of “Coming Come”, the new solo mini album from AIRBAG co-founder  BJØRN RIIS, Karisma Records have today debuted the title track, about which Bjørn had this to say:

“Coming Home” was initially written and considered for my last full-length album “Forever Comes to an End”, which was released on Karisma Records in 2017, and we did, in fact, record the drums for it. However,  there was something different about this song.  It had a much darker atmosphere and I decided that I would save it for a mini-album that I’d been wanting  to do for some time. “Coming Home” was something of a dare because I don’t consider myself a singer and it’s a really a stripped down song, but I’m very happy with it. I like the duality between the sombre and naked opening and the huge stadium-like ending.  Henrik Fossum from AIRBAG plays drums, whilst I do the vocals, guitars and keys”.

The track “Coming Home” can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/karisma-records/bjorn-riis-coming-home

As well as “Coming Home”, the five-track album includes a newly recorded semi-acoustic version of the title track from Bjørn ‘s 2014 debut album “Lullabies in a Car Crash”,  and a duet with the Norwegian singer SICHELLE.   With a front cover image  from a collection titled “Sorrow” by the Norwegian photographer Kjetil Karlsen, who provided the much-lauded  cover image for Bjorn’s second full-length album “Forever Comes to an End”,  design and layout on “Coming Home” is by Asle Tostrup.

Tracklisting for “Coming Home” is as follows:

1. Daybreak 4:00
2. Coming Home 6:44
3. Drowning 6:14
4. Tonight’s the Night 3:16
5. Lullabies in a Car Crash (alternative version) 6:29

Karisma Records have today revealed a Teaser Video for the upcoming mini album from AIRBAG co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist BJORN RIIS.  The video, which is as atmospheric  and brooding as the album itself,  can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/TWMPP2pjZ9g

Bjorn recently described how he felt about  “Coming Home”,  as well as explaining his decision to include the track “Lullabies in a Car Crash”:

“I’m really happy and proud of the vocals this time, and the duet with Sichelle on “Drowning” is very emotional.  Lyrically, “Coming Home” deals with the fear and insecurity of being forgotten by the people around you. You imagine all these dramatic scenes and wonder if you’ll ever be missed if something really was to happen.  “Lullabies” just fit right into the mood and theme of this album. It’s almost become a new song. It’s very honest and moving” .  The track features  AIRBAG and BJØRN RIIS BAND touring guitarist Ole Michael Bjørndal on lead guitar.

The BJØRN RIIS BAND will be playing two shows in the Netherlands in February to celebrate the release of the album.  The first will take place on the 23rd at Boerderij in Zoetermeer, followed on the 24th with a show at the De Cacaofabriek in Helmond

Bjorn Riis PR

With two critically acclaimed solo albums already to his name, AIRBAG co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist BJORN RIIS will kick off 2018 in style with the release of a mini-album on Karisma Records in February.

Titled “Coming Home”,  the five-track album will include a newly recorded semi-acoustic version of the title track from Bjorn’s 2014 debut album “Lullabies in a Car Crash”,  as well as a duet with the Norwegian singer SICHELLE.

Bjorn’s  interest in music started in his early teens, an era of guitar-led bands that preceded the emergence of the Progressive Rock movement, which, together with Electronica and Movie Scores, also served to influence him and lead him to develop a style filled with soaring leads and gorgeous textures.   Today he has become a much-respected guitarist within the musical community, with his own blog which is followed by thousands of fans.

Bjorn Riis 2017 PR2

Not unnaturally, therefore, guitar playing takes centre-stage on his releases, and “Coming Home” is no exception.   As Bjorn explains:  “I’ve always felt that the guitar is an extension of me and a more comfortable and natural way of expressing myself musically”.

Talking about “Coming Home” itself Bjorn had this to say:   “I’m really happy and proud of the vocals this time, and the duet with Sichelle on “Drowning” is very emotional.  Lyrically, “Coming Home” deals with the fear and insecurity of being forgotten by the people around you. You imagine all these dramatic scenes and wonder if you’ll ever be missed if something really was to happen”

A regards the idea of including the track “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, which features  AIRBAG and BJØRN RIIS BAND touring guitarist Ole Michael Bjørndal on lead guitar, Bjorn went on to explain: “Lullabies just fit right into the mood and theme of this album. It’s almost become a new song. It’s very honest and moving” .

The front cover image for “Coming Home”,  is from a collection titled “Sorrow” by the Norwegian photographer Kjetil Karlsen, who provided the much-lauded  cover image for Bjorn’s second full-length album “Forever Comes to an End”.  The design and layout is by Asle Tostrup.

Tracklisting for “Coming Home”,  which will be released in MCD format on Karisma Records on the 20th February,  is as follows:

1. Daybreak 4:00
2. Coming Home 6:44
3. Drowning 6:14

Bjorn Riis 2017 PR1

Norway’s Karisma Records have today revealed details of the sophomore full-length album from AIRBAG guitarist BJØRN RIIS.  Titled “Forever Comes to an End”, the new album is follow up to 2014’s highly acclaimed, and award-winning,  “Lullabies in a Car Crash”,  and is set for release on the 19th of May.

Written and produced by Riis himself, and engineered and mastered by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, “Forever Comes to an End” features guest appearances from AIRBAG’s Henrik Fossum on drums  and Asle Tostrup on programming,  Simen Valldal Johannessen from OAK on piano, and vocals from the Norwegian singer, SICHELLE MCMEO AKSUM.

A haunting image, shot in Beisfjord, near Narvik in Northern Norway, by the photographer Kjetil Karlsen, forms the highly evocative artwork for “Forever Comes to an End”, and track listing is as follows:

  1. Forever Comes to an End
  2. Absence
  3. The Waves
  4. Getaway
  5. Calm
  6. Winter
  7. Where are You Now

Bjorn Riis Coverart PR

A highly respected guitarist within the Internet guitar community, and with his own blog, followed by thousands of fans each week, Riis’s musical journey started back in his very early teens when bands like KISS and BLACK SABBATH held sway along with the heavily guitar-oriented side of the classic rock era of the ’70’s. The subsequent emergence of Progressive Rock bands such as PINK FLOYD, PORCUPINE TREE, MARILLION AND GENESIS, together with genres like Electronica and Movie Scores, also played a huge role in the formation of the nascent guitarists’ musical direction.

“Forever Comes to an End” pays tribute to all these diverse influences.  From the dark and dirty riffs of Toni Iommi and Zakk Wylde, to the emotional playing of David Gilmour and Steven Rothery. The melodic and sombre voice of Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness and the cinematic landscapes of composers like Thomas Newman and John Barry. And the whole is brought together by Riis very skilled and very individual touch.

“Forever Comes to an End” will be available in CD, 12″ Vinyl and Digital Download formats and a short video teaser for the album can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/FZ1tXevQrl4

Not only is ARIBAG guitarist BJØRN RIIS releasing a debut solo album, but he has also drawn the artwork that will be used for the cover, aided and abetted by AIRBAG frontman ASLE TORSTRUP who designed the cover.  Titled “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, the album is set for an Autumn release on Karisma Records, who recently debuted RIIS track “Stay Calm”, which can be heard above and at https://soundcloud.com/karisma-records/bjorn-riis-stay-calm

According to RIIS, “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, which will be co-produced by long-time AIRBAG collaborator Vegard Sleipnes  and will feature AIRBAG’s  Henrik Fossum on drums and Tostrup who will provide programming,  is very much a personal album.  Like many musicians who work in established bands, a solo album is an opportunity to explore different musical directions that might not necessarily fit in with their primary band’s material. It is an exploration that RIIS very much relishes, and he considers that some of the material he has produced for “Lullabies in a Car Crash” is some of his best to date.
