ALFAHANNE AND DARK ESSENCE RECORDS REVEAL FIRST GUEST AND ANNOUNCE SECOND “GUESS THE GUEST” COMPETITION IN RUN-UP TO ALBUM RELEASE

When ALFAHANNE and Dark Essence Records announced their first “Guess the Guest” competition recently they were pretty sure that the clues would be very easy for fans of the band.  And sure enough the entries poured in as fans guessed that the first guest on the band’s upcoming album would be none other than SHINING frontman and founder NIKLAS KVARFORTH.    An easy one to guess since Kvarforth had already worked with ALFAHANNE both in the studio and live, with his most recent collaboration with the band being a surprise appearance on stage with them at Incineration Festival  in London.

With three more guests to reveal, the second competition was launched today, and this time the clues might not seem as easy to many of their followers.  “This guest is someone we have admired for many years now, but he will probably be the most difficult one to guess.   However,  we’ve provided enough information so that with a little bit of research it shouldn’t be too hard to work out who it is” commented the band.  The clues are as follows:

1) This guest sings in a classic Swedish Black Metal band from Borlänge which started out in 1993 but is currently on hiatus.

2) This guest has released some classic Black Metal underground albums, one of them being “Apokalypsens ängel”

3) This guest’s band released their later albums on their own label Svartvintras Productions

4) In 2008 Norma Evangelium Diaboli released this guest’s box set Förbannade år 1993-2001.

Having allowed it to remain dormant for a few years, founder and frontman Doedsadmiral has given his Black Metal project SVARTELDER a considerable infusion of both enthusiasm and talent by bringing in members of CARPATHIAN FOREST, IN THE WOODS, DEN SAAKALDTE, PANTHEON I and OLD FOREST to form a new lineup.

Whilst SVARTELDER’s roots were initially planted in Norwegian Black Metal, it is obvious that an influx of musicians with this kind of experience brings with it a whole different set of influences, as each of the members contribute their own skill-sets and style to the overall sound. So much so, in fact, that the band’s newly debuted demo track “Askebundet” clearly shows that SVARTELDER’s music is expanding outwards from straight Black Metal to include more varied elements.

As to the actual lineup itself, the musicians have kept their identities a secret by changing their usual names.  Aside from Doedsadmiral on vocals, the rest of the lineup comprises Maletoth on bass and guitars, AK-47 on drums, and Kobold on keys.

When details of ALFAHANNE’s debut full-length album “Alfapokalyps” were revealed prior to the album’s release on Dark Essence Records early last year, many were surprised to find that the Swedish band, who at that time were relatively unknown,  had managed to attract guest appearances from artists such as TAAKE’s Hoest, SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth, and HELHEIM’s V’gandr.    But ALFAHANNE can claim a  lineup of musicians that have been on the Black Metal scene since the early ’90’s in bands such as VINTERLAND and early MAZE OF TORMENT , and their reputation for high octane live shows and their self-styled Alfapokalyptic Rock, which is a high energy mix of Black Metal, Classic Rock and Punk,  has since garnered them a legion of new fans throughout the world and proved to be more than enough to win the respect of other established musicians.

So much so, in fact, that the band’s sophomore full-length album, which is scheduled for release in September of this year, will include four special guests, and,  in keeping with the band’s policy of being accessible to their fans through Social Media, ALFAHANNE  have teamed up with DARK ESSENCE RECORDS to run a competition in the run-up to the release of the album.

“We really enjoy interacting with our fans, so we thought it would be fun to get them involved in guessing who the guests on our new album will be”, commented the band.  “Over the next weeks we will be featuring one of the guests and giving you a series of clues as to who it is.  Each guest is a stand-alone entry to the competition, so you have four chances of winning. The winners will receive a copy of our new album the minute it’s released , courtesy of Dark Essence Records!  Here are the clues to the first guest.  We thought we’d start off with a very easy one”.

1) This guest has a history of collaborations with Alfahanne, both in the studio and live.

2)  This guest started his current band whilst not yet a teenager  and it has been going for almost 20 years

3)  This guest is credited with starting the genre that many call “Suicidal”

4)  This guest’s  band and Alfahanne will both be appearing at Incineration Festival in London on the 9th May

Sweden’s SHINING has added more countries to its 2015 touring schedule, with a return to Italy in November, and the band’s first ever visit to Russia in December.    With SHINING’s new touring policy of concentrating on dates in individual countries as opposed long treks through several countries at a time, and shows in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany already announced, the band’s confirmed dates in support of their ninth full-length album “IX / Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends” currently stands as follows:

SHINING frontman and founder NIKLAS KVARFORTH explained the reason behind the band’s decision not to spend long periods of time on the road:  “Basically we want to be able to give our audience the best show possible each time we are on stage.  And weeks on the road stuck on a cramped, uncomfortable  nightliner,  with people you don’t even know and with no privacy in which to be able to rest and relax, is not conducive to any of us being able to give it our best on stage, particularly myself.  So that’s something we will definitely not be doing.   We have also decided that we do not want to be shunted into the usual venues that every tour seems to hit, but rather to choose to play better venues, with better facilities not only for ourselves, but also for the audience, wherever possible”.

LEGENDARY NORWEGIANS HADES ALMIGHTY ANNOUNCE NEW FRONTMAN

As HADES ALMIGHTY themselves put it in a statement today the  “Dawn of a New Era” is upon the band with the arrival of a new frontman to replace former vocalist Janto, who, after 22 years,  left the band on friendly terms for personal reasons.

With a couple of new release set to appear on Dark Essence Records,  long-time members and founders,   guitarist Jorn (DOMINANZ, ex-OLD FUNERAL, ex-IMMORTAL, ex-AMPUTATION)  and drummer Remi,  had this to say about the new arrival and future plans for the band:

“HADES ALMIGHTY are back! A lot has been festering in the HADES Horde in the last year, and we are now finally able to reveal some details.

First, we are pleased to present the mighty Ask Ty who will be our new musical orator and the screamer of blood curling verses. Known as drummer and part time vocalist of bands like KAMPFAR and KRAKOW , Ask Ty brings fresh nutrients to the soil of the Horde. We have been working together for the last 6 months, and the harvest has been fruitful.

Secondly, we hereby announce that the first studio release since 2001’s ‘THE PULSE OF DECAY‘ will be an EP entitled ‘PYRE ERA, BLACK!’, which will lead up to the release of a full-length album not long after.  Both will be released through Dark Essence Records.

Prepare for the Dawn of a New Era!”

Work on the debut full-length album  from THE 3RD ATTEMPT, which is set to be released on Dark Essence Records later this year,  is progressing at a very satisfactory pace.  The band entered the Sanden Studio in Kristiansand on the 17th April and they have posted the first in what will be a series of Studio Reports which will follow the progress of the album.   The first report, which includes videos of drummer Tybalt laying down the drum tracks, as well as a series of photos by guitarist Tchort,  can be seen at https://3rdattemptband.wordpress.com/

With the drum tracks now recorded, the next job will be to create a rough mix, ready for the guitars and bass to be recorded later this week.   Recording and producing the album is Endre Kirkesola, who is the band’s sound engineer in both the studio and live, and who has worked with bands such as BLOOD RED THRONE, CHROME DIVISION, URGEHAL, TSJUDER, GREEN CARNATION, CARPATHIAN FOREST and IMMORTAL.

Formed late last year by former CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort (GREEN CARNATION, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex EMPEROR, ex BLOOD RED THRONE) and BloodPervertor (APOSTASY, ex-CARPATHIAN FOREST, ex NEONGOD), THE 3RD ATTEMPT’s lineup includes Kaahrl Ødemark (ex- MIDNATTSVREDE, ex-NECROCAVE) on vocals  and  Tybalt (FORTID, DEN SAAKALDTE, ETHEREAL FOREST, ex- HEATHEN DEITY, ex-PANTHEON I) on drums.  With such a pedigree it was no surprise that the band found itself being  courted by various labels before eventually allowing themselves to be snapped up by Norway’s Dark Essence Records.

THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s  next live appearance will be at the Southern Discomfort Metal Festival, in Kristiansand, Norway, in September.

Former CARPATHIAN FOREST guitarists Tchort and Bloodpervertor certainly hit the ground running when they formed their new band THE 3rd ATTEMPT.  In under a year they have managed to audition musicians and get themselves a fully rehearsed lineup which made its live debut at one of Norway’s biggest festivals,  sifted through a selection of offers from labels before settling on Dark Essence Records,  and have written and prepared all the material for their debut full-length album.

And,  April 17th will see them enter the Dub Studio in Oslo, to begin recording their new album with producer Endre Kirkesola, who has worked with bands such as BLOOD RED THRONE, CHROME DIVISION, URGEHAL, TSJUDER, GREEN CARNATION, CARPATHIAN FOREST.  Aside from working with some of Norway’s greats in the studio, Kirkesola is also THE 3rd ATTEMPT’s live sound engineer, a job he also performed for IMMORTAL.

“We are really looking forward to begin recording the album,” commented guitarist Tchort.  “The whole process of setting up the band and getting on stage for the first time with THE 3rd ATTEMPT has been a real boost, not just in terms of creativity, but also in terms of a renewed enthusiasm for performing.  It was a boost we had really been in dire need of over the past few years”.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS SIGNS NORWEGIAN BLACK METALLERS ORKAN

Bergen-based Dark Essence Records, one of the fastest growing and most respected Norwegian labels,  have announced the signing of Black Metallers ORKAN, and are set to release the band’s sophomore full-length album “Livlaus” later this year.

ORKAN’s four-man lineup was formed in 2008 by TAAKE’s live guitarist Gjermund Fredheim and ex- BYFROST drummer Rune Nesse.  Having been joined by former GRIMNORTH  bassist Sindre Hillesdal and frontman Einar Fjelldal (ex-GRAVEMACHINE),  ORKAN released their debut full-length album “Crimson Canvas” in 2012.

Whilst “Crimson Fields” is, as described by the band, “a self-financed, thrashy album”, ORKAN have left this sound behind them and taken their musical vision in a much darker direction, taking the classic Norwegian Black Metal sound and incorporating into it influences from many other genres, to create atmospheric melodies with haunting vocals and intense blastbeats.

Norway’s SUCHTHAUS, the band that defies genre type casting and for whom visuals play as big a role as the music itself, has released a tribute to the iconic Black Metal band MAYHEM, in the form of a video cover of the track “Life Eternal” from what is probably MAYHEM’s most famous album, 1994’s “De Misteriis Dom Sathanas”.   The cover features SUCHTHAUS members Spacebrain on vocals, Ingvar the Last Viking on guitars, Fruen on the organ, and Hellhammer, who is of course himself one of the original members of MAYHEM, on drums.  The video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/44AbpTyWWiU

Whilst it may not come as a surprise that a band has recorded a MAYHEM cover, it is, in this case, more appropriate than the usual run of the mill tribute, given that SUCHTHAUS founder SPACEBRAIN, is the man behind many of MAYHEM’s most recognisable stage sets.   A renowned sculptor, as well as a musician, SPACEBRAIN had this to say about the tribute:

“Mayhem has survived hell for 30 years, and I was fortunate to play  a part during a few of those years, touring through Europe with the art of SPACEBRAIN from 2000-2006. This is a period of my life I will never forget, neither the good nor the bad experiences,  and  therefore SUCHTHAUS decided to put in some hard work to try to recreate the soundtrack that got stuck in my head: “Life Eternal”.   It´s far from a straight cover, but our vision was a way of thanking the men who let me be a part of their life (in alphabetical order) Atilla, Blasphemer, Hellhammer, Maniac, Necrobutcher”.

SUCHTHAUS is currently working putting the finishing touches on the band’s sophomore album “Motorbrain”, which, once finished, will be released on SUCHTHAUS’ own label Rollabigone.   Guests on the album incude SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth.

“Motorbrain” will be the follow up to SUCHTHAUS’ debut  album “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, which included collaborations from musicians such as Maniac  (SKITLIV, ex-MAYHEM),   CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Fredrik A. Juell  (BURNING RUBBER,  BERSERK BASTARDS) and singer Sibob Jawara, and showed clearly how difficult it is to squeeze the band into any particular genre.   Whilst “Motorbrain” promises to be a much more “metal” album, it will definitely not be a “straight up” metal album, and the band is at pains to point out that it does not reflect  any direction that they have any  intention of following in the future.

SWEDEN’S VANHELGA RELEASES DIGI ALBUM

Sweden’s VANHELGA, one of the more extreme and uncompromising exponents of DSBM, and a band that seems to exist at the centre a maelstrom of creative output, is set to release a digital mini album on the 12th March. With the band’s sense of irony fully intact, the 5-track album is titled “Happiness” and is available directly from the band at https://vanhelga.bandcamp.com/album/happiness where it will be available at a special price, including wallpaper,  for the first few days, as well as from the usual digital distribution and streaming outlets.

Commenting on the new release, VANHELGA founder J. Ottosson, aka 145188 (ex-LIFELOVER (live session musician), ex-SKOGSTRON) had this to say: ” My constant need to write and record is a by-product of my mental state, and I am the first one to admit that whilst recording this I was under the strong influence of drugs. This resulted in a piece of work that is an expression of the effect of the use of self-destructive tools like drugs and self-mutilation in order to feel “happy”. Although we have a new VANHELGA album coming out on Art of Propaganda later in the year, I had a lot of material ready that I wanted to get out before then, and so we thought we’d do a digital self-release. Particularly since some of the material on “Happiness” might not necessarily fit in with the more “traditional” VANHELGA sound, and fans might find themselves a bit surprised by some of it”.

VANHELGA is also set to appear on an upcoming four-way split with OFDRYKKJA, PSYCHONAUT 4 and IN LUNA which will be released jointly on Art of Propaganda and Talheim Records on the 6th April. Titled “Urban Negativism”, VANHELGA will contribute two new tracks and a LIFELOVER cover to the ten-track album, which will first be released in a digipack format, with a vinyl version likely to appear later.

VANHELGA’s next live appearance will be at Kings of Black Metal in Alsfeld, Germany on the 24th April.
