SOLSTEIN came into being after multi-instrumentalist Jacob Holm-Lupo (WHITE WILLOW, THE OPIUM CARTEL, DONNER) and drummer Keith Carlock (STEELY DAN, TOTO, JOHN LEGEND, STING) had collaborated with legendary guitarist Georg Wadenius on a track for Holm-Lupo’s DONNER project. The collaboration between the duo worked so well that they  decided to come together again on a whole album.

Joining Carlock and Holm-Lupo are up-and-coming guitarist Stian Larsen and keyboardists Brynjar Dambo (WHITE WILLOW) and Bill Bressler, and together they form a project that is inspired by jazz-rock, funk, prog rock and chill-out.  The sound they produce is an  instrumental form of rock, where jazz harmony combines with proggy arrangements and soul/funk grooves. The end result is laid back and  elegant, oscillating between funky fusion and rock.

Given some of the member’s prog backgrounds, there are also echoes of the jazzier side of prog, but, more than anything, SOLSTEIN is a playground for the musicians, where everyone was given free reins to do whatever they felt the music needed. If it put a smile on everyone’s face, it was deemed right.

The result is a self-titled album that is accessible yet adventurous, colourful, groovy and engaging. It melds  the groovier side of fusion with elements of prog and funk, but which, rather than having the standard 2020s fusion sound, tends more towards the funkier, more melodic spectrum that brings artists like THE CRUSADERS, IDRIS MUHAMMED, early BOB JAMES and 70s HERBIE HANCOCK to mind.

“Solstein”  was mixed and given pristine analogue mastering at Holm-Lupo’s Dude Ranch Studio, and with artwork by Martina Wilek, track listing is as follows:

  1. Intersection
  2. Oriental Folk Song
  3. Southwester
  4. The Night Owl
  5. Siriusly
  6. February 9th
  7. The Creeper
  8. Hamada

“Solstein” will be released on Is it Jazz? Records on the 7th July in CD, Digital and LPC formats and is now available to pre-order from:

The name SOLSTEIN means Sunstone, and it refers to  a relatively rare rock containing copper-red crystals, which, when seen from different angles refracts the light in a very beautiful way. The most significant deposits of the rock are found along the southern coast of Norway where Holm-Lupo lives and runs his studio.

Is It Jazz? Records, the scion of Norways Dark Essence and Karisma Records, will launch their first release on the 27th May when the self-titled debut album from Jazz Prog Rockers SOFT FFOG hits the streets.  But those curious to hear what the label has in store for them need wait no longer, because today “Chun Li”,  the opening track from the SOFT FFOG album, has been released as a single, which can be streamed or downloaded from various services at:

https://isitjazzrecords.fanlink.to/Soft-Ffog_Chun-Li

Being the first band on the label is, as you can imagine, something the Instrumental Quartet is  very much looking forward to, as the band explains:

SOFT FFOG are super stoked to be the first band signed to Is it Jazz? Records and we’re looking forward to rising into the cosmos together! So,about us. Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if JIMI HENDRIX joined DEEP PURPLE and aimed at sounding like GENTLE GIANT – but failing miserably in the attempt because too much jazz had been consumed lately? Probably not, but anyhow,  SOFT FFOG´s sound is unique, and draws parallels with the aforementioned acts somewhat in style, compositions and aesthetics, but is more rooted in jazz – with prolonged solos and improvisations.

And of course the time has now come, and we are happy to release the first single from our upcoming album.  The song is the opener on the album, and kicks off with a «The Who-esque» intro with a twisted indie rock melody, then progresses into a fuzzed out Gentle Giant-like riff. Guitar solo ahead! And then concludes with a bang!

SOFT FFOG’s genesis in 2016 was somewhat unusual in that it came about as a one-off gig commissioned by the Kongsberg Jazz Festival. Despite the success of this event, the band did not get the momentum it needed to be a proper working entity, and, combined with the busy schedules of the respective musicians, each with their other bands and projects, SOFT FFOG only played gigs every now and then. Playing live, did however,  help to define and refine the band’s  sound, so much so, infact, that founder  Tom Hasslan decided that  2020 was the right time for SOFT FFOG to record their first album.

The band consists of Tom Hasslan (KROKOFANT) who also wrote the album, on guitars, Axel Skalstad (KROKOFANT) on drums, Trond Frønes (RED KITE, GRAND GENERAL) on bass, and Vegard Lien Bjerkan (WIZRD) on keyboards.  It’s safe to say that individually the members of SOFT FFOG have probably played with everyone in the Norwegian Jazz scene, and now  they have a vehicle that allows them to do their own thing. By combining influences from KING CRIMSON with TERJE RYPDAL, DEEP PURPLE with PAT METHENY, SOFT FFOG have produced an album of blistering guitar solos, gnarly bass, crazy drums and supersonic keyboard playing!

Recorded at Studio Paradiso with Christian Engfelt engineering and producing, and mastered by  Herbrand Larsen, and with artwork by Tor Einar Evju and layout by Tom Korsvold,  track listing for the album is as follows:

1. Chun Li
2. Zangief
3. Ken
4. Dhalsim

Almost exactly two years after the release of their last album, Norwegian Prog Rockers JORDSJØ are back with their third full-length.  Titled “Pastoralia”, the album is a must for fans of Scandinavian prog, following, as it does, the tradition of some of last centuries’ best Nordic rock by melding Progressive rock with interesting melodies, and giving the whole a Folk-inspired twist.

As a prelude to its release, JORDSJØ have chosen to debut “Skumring i Karesuando”,  the second track from “Pastoralia”,  and the band had this to say about the track:

“Skumring i Karesuando” is a little glimpse into Jordsjø and Actionfredags mini “Terra Borealis Tour”, where we played in Trondheim, Umeå and Karlsøy in Troms. A slightly scruffy caravan which slowly and steadily marched through desolate and majestic landscapes. The song is split into four parts, called Ferd, Syner, Ankomst and Hjem.

“Skumring i Karesuando” can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Jordsjo_Skumring-i-Karesuando

Well known in the flourishing Oslo Prog scene, and inspired by European 20th century classical and jazz music, JORDSJØ’s duo is comprised of multi instrumentalist Håkon Oftung (TUSMØRKE, BLACK MAGIC) and drummer Kristian Frøland. With “Pastoralis”, the band has produced an album that is a musical journey that travels from minimalist mellotron passages to a full on rock tempest and sees the JORDSJØ moving  further into jazzy, progressive,  musical landscapes.

“Pastoralia” was recorded and produced in its entirety by JORDSJØ between March and November 2020, in the basement of Bjørnerød Gård  in Våler, Østfold. Thematically, the album is based on dreams, a longing for freedom and the fictional place “Pastoralia” – where every day is like tropical nights in Northern Norway, where the forest people dance around campfires.

JORDSJØ are joined on “Pastoralia” by a number of guests including Ola Mile Bruland (ACTIONFREDAG), Håkon Knutzen, Vilde Mortensen Storesund, Mats Lemjan, Christian Meaas Svendsen and Åsa Ree (MEER, TUSMØRKE, WOBBLER).

With artwork by  Sindre Foss Skancke, tracklisting for “Pastoralia” is as follows:

  1. Prolog
  2. Skumring i Karesuando
  3. Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd
  4. Pastoralia
  5. Fuglehviskeren
  6. Beitemark
  7. Vettedans
  8. Jord III

Set for release on Karisma Records on the 7th May, “Pastoralia” will be available in CD, Digital and black Vinyl formats as well as in a blue Vinyl version which will be limited to 600 copies.  It is now available to pre-order from the following:

Ruphus Flying Colours PR1

Karisma Records is set to release “Flying Colours”,  the next album in its planned series of six full-length releases that makes up the entire back-catalogue of Norwegian Prog Legends RUPHUS.

Originally released in 1978, “Flying Colours” is unusual for RUPHUS, a band used to an ever-shifting lineup, in that it featured the same musicians as on its predecessor “Inner Voice”, namely Kjell Larsen on guitar, Asle Nilsen on bass), Sylvi Lillegaard on vocals, Thor Bendiksen and drums and Jan Simonsen  on keyboards.

By the time “Flying Colours” hit the streets for the first time, RUPHUS had been settled in Germany for such a long time, extensively touring Continental Europe, to the extent that even Norwegian fans assumed the band was German.   It is, nevertheless, a prime example of Proggy Norwegian 70’s Jazz Rock, firmly cementing the band’s reputation as one of the leading lights of the European Jazz Rock Scene.

Recorded at the  Rosenborg Studios in  Oslo and engineered by Hans Petter Danielsen,  the new release of “Flying Colours has once again be been remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc) who is working  with new digital transfers from the original master tapes which are stored in the Norwegian National Archives for posterity.

With artwork by Jan Ole Norum  tracklisting for “Flying Colours is as follows:

  1. Foodlover’s Diet
  2. Frysja
  3. Early Riser
  4. Flying Colours
  5. The Rivulet
  6. Joy
  7. Moody Moments
    Part One: The Moment
    Part Two: Gloom
    Part Three: Exaltation

“Flying Colours” will be released in CD, LP and Limited Edition Purple Vinyl (250 copies only) on the 7th August, and is now available to pre-order from:

As a bonus to fans of Norwegian Prog in general, and RUPHUS in particular, Karisma Records will revisit the band’s debut album “New Born Day”, which it re-released in March of this year, by making available a limited edition white vinyl version.  It is an album widely regarded as one of the best albums to have emerged from the  Norwegian Prog scene, so this version will come as a pleasant addition to any fans collection.

“New Born Day”, which will also be released on the 7th August, is now available to pre-order from:

A versatile and ground-breaking band, RUPHUS, with their long, melodic, compositions,  and multiple, intertwined themes, were regarded as being the Norwegian equivalent of YES, not just in style, but also in skill.   The band’s revolving door policy as regards their lineup meant that, as members left and others joined, RUPHUS’ sound changed accordingly,  taking them from their early days playing hard progressive rock, to becoming one of the leaders in the field of jazz rock. Only Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) would go on to play on all of RUPHUS’ albums.

On the 6th December, when “Let Your Light Shine” hits the streets,  Karisma Records will have hit the half way mark in their mission to release the entire back catalogue of Norwegian Prog Legends RUPHUS.

The third of what will be a total of six releases by Karisma,  “Let Your Light Shine” is the album that marked a new direction for RUPHUS.  A direction driven by  keyboard player Håkon Graf’s stint with a jazz ensemble called MOOSE LOOSE, from which Graf emerged with new inspiration.  Armed with a selection of refined jazz compositions, the newly re-formed RUPHUS entered the studio with legendary producer  Terje Rypdal and embarked on their first foray into Jazz Rock territory, which also paved the way for the band’s entry into the bigger, European market.

Originally released on the German label Brain in 1976, and creating a stir in Europe “Let Your Light Shine’s” overwhelmingly positive reception led to a tour that saw RUPHUS playing in front of enthusiastic crowds in sold out venues.

As with all the RUPHUS back catalogue releases, “Let Your Light Shine” has been has been re-mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc) using digital transfers from the original master tapes that are stored in the Norwegian National Archives for posterity.

Ruphus Ranshart PR

Having announced that they will release the entire back catalogue of the ’70’s Norwegian Prog legends RUPHUS, and hot on the heels of the release of the first album “New Born Day”, Karisma Records are ready to reveal the details of “Ranshart”, the second of what will be a total of six releases.

A versatile and ground-breaking band, RUPHUS, with their long, melodic, compositions and multiple, intertwined themes, were regarded as being the Norwegian equivalent of YES, not just in style, but also in skill.

Starting out playing hard progressive rock, RUPHUS adopted a revolving door policy as regards their lineup, and as members left and others joined, the sound changed accordingly, sending RUPHUS in a direction that would eventually make them leaders in the field of Jazz Rock. Only Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) would go on to play on all of RUPHUS’ albums.

By  the time RUPHUS’  sophomore album “Ranshart” was released in 1974, the original seven-man lineup had become five. with  three of the seven original members having left the band, including the two vocalists, who were replaced by Rune Østdahl.

As with all the re-issues in the series, “Ranshart”, which was originally recorded at the Roger Arnhoff studios in October 1974, has been re-mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc) using digital transfers from the original master tapes which are stored in the Norwegian National Archives for posterity.

With original artwork by Kathinka Rasch Andersen “Ranshart” will be available in CD, LP and limited Edition LP on yellow vinyl.  Tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Love is my Light
  2. Easy Lovers
  3. Fallen Wonders
  4. Pictures of a Day
  5. Back Side

With their sophomore full-length album “Music For Wastelands” set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 6th November, Jazz Prog Rockers OSSICLES have debuted a new video for a track from the album.  The self-made video for “Family Tree” is a quirky look at some trips the band took during the summer, and it can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/Fj4GtIthcng

“Music  for Wastelands” is a follow up to the band’s debut album “Mantelpiece”.  Originally self-released, “Mantelpiece” was  re-released on Karisma Records earlier this year, finally bringing the album that caught the attention of musical greats such as MIKE PORTNOY  and PORCUPINE TREE’s STEVEN WILSON, to a wider audience.

Speaking recently  about “Music  For Wastelands”, OSSICLES founders Bastian and Sondre Veland, the two cousins who formed the band in 2011, had this to say:  “We  both agree that with “Music for Wastelands” we have been able to define our own individual style and sound much more clearly, and we now sound more like ourselves rather than the music that originally inspired us”.

The duo then went on to explain that the album is a concept story “told through the songs, and it’s composed as a single musical piece, which is something that will probably become clear the  more you hear it, because it’s meant to be an album in which you can hear something new every time you listen to it. The structure itself is inspired by DAVID BOWIE’s album “Low”, where the more immediate songs – the ones that are easiest to like –  appear first, and the more experimental songs come at the end.  There are few limitations when it comes to genres, and the album features a lot of different styles, something that was necessary in order to properly portray the concept and the story”.

All instruments and vocals on the 14-track album are performed by Bastian and Sondre Veland, with  guest appearances from Erlend Furuset Jenssen (saxophone) and Karin Mäkiranta (vocals).  Artwork for “Music for Wastelands” is by Randi Veland and track listing is as follows:

1. Halfway Homes
2. Darkroom
3. Tectonic
4. Will It Last?
5. Family Tree
6. Exit Wound
7. Pale Summer Nails
8. The Red Heart
9. Goodnight Ghosts
10. In the Stereo
11. Girl with the Glass Eye
12. Pandemonium
13. Porcelain Doll
14. Music for Wastelands

“Music for Wastelands” will be released in CD Digipack and digital formats and  is now available to pre-order from Karisma Records BandCamp  at   https://ossiclesband.bandcamp.com/ or the webshop at http://karismarecords.bigcartel.com/

“Halfway Homes”,  the opening track from “Music for Wastelands”, the upcoming album from Jazz Prog Rockers OSSICLES, which is set for release on Karisma Records on the 6th November,  has been debuted today and can be heard below and at https://soundcloud.com/karisma-records/ossicles-halfway-homes

All instruments and vocals on the 14-track album are performed by cousins Bastian and Sondre Veland, who formed the band in 2011, with  guest appearances from Erlend Furuset Jenssen (saxophone) and Karin Mäkiranta (vocals).  Artwork for “Music for Wastelands” is by Randi Veland and track listing is as follows:

1. Halfway Homes
2. Darkroom
3. Tectonic
4. Will It Last?
5. Family Tree
6. Exit Wound
7. Pale Summer Nails
8. The Red Heart
9. Goodnight Ghosts
10. In the Stereo
11. Girl with the Glass Eye
12. Pandemonium
13. Porcelain Doll
14. Music for Wastelands

The two Veland cousins had this to say about the album:  “Music for Wastelands”  has a concept and a story that is told through the songs, and it’s composed as a single musical piece, which is something that will probably become clear the  more you hear it, because it’s meant to be an album in which you can hear something new every time you listen to it. The structure itself is inspired by DAVID BOWIE’s album “Low”, where the more immediate songs – the ones that are easiest to like –  appear first, and the more experimental songs come at the end.  There are few limitations when it comes to genres, and the album features a lot of different styles, something that was necessary in order to properly portray the concept and the story.

“Very importantly, we  both agree that with “Music for Wastelands” we have been able to define our own individual style and sound much more clearly, and we now sound more like ourselves rather than the music that originally inspired us”.

OSSICLES debut album “Mantlepiece” was originally self-released to much critical acclaim from the likes of musicians such PORCUPINE TREE’s STEVEN WILSON who said of it “I can’t believe that such young guys can make music like they do”, and MIKE PORTNOY, who, on the strength of the album, invited the band to appear live.  “Mantlepiece” was re-released earlier this year on Karisma Records.
