HOWL OF THE UNDERDOGS

Howl of the Underdogs is the story of the Norwegian metal band Madder Mortem and their singer who, struggling with a life-long eating disorder in an image-obsessed industry, undergoes weight loss surgery to battle the demons that have given birth to their music. After filming with the band during their 20th anniversary year as they recorded new music, toured Europe, and reunited all of their former members in Oslo for a once-in-a-lifetime show, the film explores how the band boils down their internal demons, Scandinavian cultural norms, and an image-obsessed industry into inspirational music that reaches fans around the world.

The worldwide release of “HOTU” will be celebrated with a whole day of events, in collaboration with Odal Rock Club’s Microrock festival in Austvatn, Norway on Saturday, June 26th, 2021.

After a screening of the film, Metalheads Against Bullying, in collaboration with Madder Mortem and Odal Rock Club, are hosting a live panel discussion under the header “The Bully Within”. Inspired by “Howl of the Underdogs”, this panel discussion will address topics like shame, body image, and gender roles in metal. Among the participants are Leif Munkelien, the man behind Metalheads Against Bullying, singer Agnete from Madder Mortem, Norwegian singer/songwriter Marius Nesset, and Green Carnation singer Kjetil Nordhus. To add perspectives from outside the music business, the panel is joined by Mona Larsen, spokesperson from the Norwegian Eating Disorder Association. The panel will be accessible online as a free-of-charge streaming event, and the online audience will be able to add their comments and questions through a live chat moderator interacting with the panel.

For more info and links to the panel, follow:  https://www.facebook.com/howloftheunderdogs

In addition to the panel discussion, Metalheads Against Bullying, Nord-Odal photograper Ann-Helén Moen Nannestad and Madder Mortem have collaborated on an art photography project, also under the header “The Bully Within”. The resulting photographic prints will be exhibited and for sale at the festival, and all proceeds from the print sales will go directly to Metalheads Against Bullying and their work.

Finally, Madder Mortem will be performing an hour-long live set at the festival later that night.

FILM SYNOPSIS:
An intimate and uncompromising look at the battle between one truly unique band
and a music industry plagued by gender double standards and a culture of
conformity, Howl of the Underdogs (2021) is the story of Norwegian rock
visionaries Madder Mortem. In particular, it explores the inner life of their enigmatic
singer Agnete Kirkevaag, who opens up with ferocious bravery about the effects of
the music scene’s image obsession on her self-confidence and the impact of her
life-long struggle with an eating disorder on her music.

ABOUT HOWL OF THE UNDERDOGS:
Singer Agnete M. Kirkevaag – “We wanted to make a 20th anniversary documentary about
the history of the band, and through a serendipitous podcast interview, we connected with
director Randy M. Salo. Quite unintentionally, the first shoot coincided with a strange time for
us and for me personally. I picked up Randy at the airport just four days after undergoing
weight loss surgery, and he ended up following us through a year where almost everything in
my life was uncertain and changing. Rather than the short historical overview we intended to
make, the movie grew into the story of how our lives have shaped our music.”

Director Randy M. Salo – “I first became aware of Madder Mortem during my film
studies at the School of Visual Arts in N.Y.C in 2001. I was taken aback by their
musical uniqueness and the emotional depth of their singer. Since 2013, I have been
focused on producing high-end, intimate documentaries with musicians. When the
opportunity arose to make a film about the history of the band, I wanted to know how
they came to have such a unique and diverse sound. I had no idea how far down the
rabbit hole this would lead me. As with any good documentary project, you start off
filming what you think is going to be the movie, only to have the real movie rear up
from behind to completely overtake you.”

ABOUT MADDER MORTEM:
Starting life in 1993 as Mystery Tribe, Madder Mortem was one of the early bands
from the contemporary Norwegian Metal scene to break away from set genre
boundaries. Having started off with a more straight doom metal sound, the band has
continued to develop with each album, following a flawless transition to become an
experimental and diverse progressive metal band with a unique sense of groove and
contrasting arrangements. After celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut
album “Mercury” in 2019, Madder Mortem are currently working on their 8th studio
album.

PRESS QUOTES ABOUT MADDER MORTEM:

“They’re impossible to categorize…you just need to listen” – Vice
“Rare is the band that truly sounds like no one else” – Angry Metal Guy

Session guitarist KEVIN STORM, known for his work with bands such as VULTURE INDUSTRIES, KALMAH, EQUILIBRIUM, SHINING to name but a few, has today revealed the details of his new project FLEETBURNER and the upcoming self-titled debut album which will be released on Butler Records.

The idea of forming FLEETBURNER came about when both Storm and drummer  Tomas Myklebust (MISTUR, GALAR, KABARET MAKABER, ROADKILL) were on tour with VULTURE INDUSTRIES as session musicians, and ended the tour agreeing that they should form a band together.

With Netherlands’ Storm on Guitars, Keys, Soundscapes, Production and Story, and Norway’s  Myklebust on Drums and percussion and additional sounds, FLEETBURNER’S multi-national ranks were soon expanded with the arrival of US vocalist Ken Simerly, Finland’s  Veli-Matti Kananen (KALMAH, VINTERGATA) on Keys,  and Sweden’s Peter Iwers (ex-IN FLAMES) on bass.

According to Storm, “Fleetburner” is a concept album about “leaving everything behind, burning all ships in your wake, to sail towards…everything but this”.  The main protagonist, and namesake of both the band and the album, is The Fleetburner,  who has set sail towards no particular destination but with the goal of steering  away from pain, and pursued by an ever-growing fleet of blood-spillers who want what he has, without truly knowing what that is.

The albums storyline encompasses the entire lifespan of the protagonist who starts out as an insecure,  runaway child, and develops into the voyage of a man facing his both his inner, as well as his external, demons. The first track from the album, which the band has chosen to debut as a video is “Open Water”, which sees The Fleetburner reach open water “after having fled the land-based world, where fires rage, war is waged and man cannot escape the infinite cycle of pain and human error“.  It is a deeply emotional and personal song that deals with carrying the burden of your fellow man and the taking of what was never given”.

Madder Mortem New PR

On the 6th September MADDER MORTEM will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their debut full-length album “Mercury” with its re-release on Dark Essence Records.  A re-release  that includes five new tracks, especially recorded by the band,  three of which are from the original album, but which have been re-imagined and re-arranged in a more contemporary manner, and two of which are brand new songs composed using old, Mercury-era, riffs.

And, as part of that celebration, the band has, for the very first time, opened its doors to a documentary film team  who will explore MADDER MORTEM’s musical lives, and their unique creative process, to  discover what  beats at the heart of one of Norway’s most culturally relevant, but underrated rock bands.

The documentary was filmed on Location in Nord-Odal, Hedmark County, Norway,  and Dresden, Germany, and, as a taste of what’s to come,  Dark Essence Records have released a music video by the documentary’s director Randy M. Salo of FREQS / Stewis Media.

The video, for “Vigil”, one of the bonus tracks on “Mercury” can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/Cq1fY3el5sg

A
Salo  says of the video for “Vigil”:

When I first began filming the project, the band was in the rehearsal room putting the last touches on the bonus tracks for the Mercury re-release. When they began to play “Vigil”, I immediately saw the music video playing out in my mind. Experiencing the 20 years of history between the first album and that moment, I saw a mini-version of the documentary that would combine images of the hauntingly beautiful landscape of Hedmark county in winter, with the band rehearsing and recording the bonus tracks. To give the fans a more intimate look at their journey we included many archival photos from their storied career. I hope this video will help tide over the fans until the release of the feature length film!

About the music itself, the band the band had this to say:

“Vigil” is quite a special song. As one of the bonus tracks for our Mercury re-release, the main riff was written in the early 90s by Christian Ruud, our then guitar player. We were never able to forget this idea, so when we started thinking of bonus tracks for this re-release, that riff was immediately on our minds. Madder Mortem anno 2019 worked on it and added to it in the rehearsal room, and the result is a fragile and beautiful landscape of music that we are very proud of. The lyrics are very direct and honest, and balance right on that razor’s edge between despair and hope that is a Madder Mortem trademark.

First released on Misanthropy Records back in 1999, and unavailable for many years, “Mercury” has been re-mastered by Peter In de Betou, and  its original mix of prog, gothic and doom metal  sounds as fresh and original today as it did 20 years ago.  Track listing on “Mercury” is as follows:

  1. Undertow
  2. Under Another Moon
  3. He Who Longed For The Stars
  4. These Mortal Sins
  5. The Grinding Silence
  6. Loss
  7. Remnants
  8. Misty Sleep
  9. Convertion
    Bonus tracks:
  10. He Who Longed For The Stars (2019 re-recording)
  11. The Grinding Silence (2019 re-recording)
  12. Remnants (2019 re-recording)
  13. Shadows Coming Home
  14. Vigil

As  the Madders themselves explain:

In 1999, we released our first album «Mercury» on Misanthropy Records. We were kids given the opportunity to fulfil our dreams, and getting to do it on such an outstanding label was awe-inspiring. This record kicked off the journey we’re still on, and we’re still immensely proud of it. We’ve evolved and changed through the years, band members have come and gone, and the Madder family has been growing, but the Madder marrow has remained intact. Through our crowdfunding campaign last year, we got to feel the full strength of our community, and now we’d like to celebrate the anniversary and re-release of «Mercury» together with you all.

We’ve planned a very special night for you. We are bringing the former members of Madder Mortem back to the stage, to share the different eras with you all, as well as some surprise guests. We’ve chosen a set list that includes some fan favourites and some very rarely heard songs, as well as some of the bonus tracks from the re-release. Costin will also exhibit his original paintings at the show, to give you a close look at his visual interpretation of the Madder music, and there might be more surprises along the way.

But even with all these amazing elements, what we are looking forward to the most, is to celebrate our long history together with you. We’re still going strong, 20 years in, without compromise and without losing our passion. We know who we are and where we belong, and even though what we make is often dark, this will be a joyful night, a gathering of family and friends to share our love for the music. Come and join us for the celebration!

Vulture Industries Deeper ArtworkPR

Norway’s VULTURE INDUSTRIES are set to release a new single, titled “Deeper”, On Dark Essence Records.   A video for the single, by long-time Romanian artist and long-time collaborator Costin Choireanu, can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/zSz3BIUrjT4

A
“Deeper” tells the story of man’s insatiable greed for more, as symbolised by the miners digging all the way to Hell.  Starting out with a haunting trumpet solo, the track mixes a Spaghetti Western vibe with the rhythmic and melodic drive of a large-scale rock opus. Musically “Deeper» nods in the direction of such diverse acts as Ennio Morricone, Type O Negative, The Beatles and Lee Hazlewood, but at the same time there is also a solid dose of rock and metal, in the signature style of VULTURE INDUSTRIES.

Vulture Industries PR

VULTURE INDUSTRIES frontman, Bjørnar E. Nilsen had this to say about the origins of the song:

It was one of those scorching summer days of 2018. The parched grass had turned the fields the colour of old paper, and the sun, at its zenith, was mercilessly searing our skin. Thirsty, hungry, and with tongues swelling, we had just missed the ferry crossing and could taste our hopes turn to ashes in our mouths. Trying to remain calm, but steadily feeling the building pressure of desperation, as a boiler ready to blow, we waited in line. Then suddenly the one year old in the back seat broke the silence chanting AHUM, AHUM, AHUM, AHUM! Overcome by what felt like divine inspiration but might very well have been sent from the depths of Hell, I started drumming on the dashboard. DUM, DADADUM, DADADUM, DADADUMDADUMDADUM.”

Nilsen mixing and producing the album  alongside the band , and Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED) handling the mastering.

Madder Mortem New PR

With their seventh full-length album “Marrow” having been released on Dark Essence Records in September, MADDER MORTEM are set to hit the road in December with a series of European dates which will see the Norwegian Alternative Metallers headline for the first time in their long and illustrious career.

It  is a tour MADDER MORTEM are all very much looking forward to as the band explains:

We’ve always loved playing live, and the unbelievable welcome we received on the double European tour with SOEN in 2017 just stoked our fire. Madder Mortem New PR

“Liberator” is the declaration of intent from “Marrow” – it’s our call to arms. It’s a reminder to not make yourself smaller to appease others, but to sink your teeth into life and bite off way more than you can chew. Never let them drag you back into line!”

That’s what Norway’s MADDER MORTEM has to say about the track “Liberator” from their newly released album “Marrow”, and, fittingly, they have chosen to turn the track into a fascinatingly weird new video, once again calling upon the services of Costin Chioreanu to breathe visual life into their “call to arms”.

As the band explains:

After seeing Costin Chioreanu’s gorgeous artwork in the animated video for “Far From Home”, we really wanted to see what his take would be on a filmed video. Costin somehow managed to poke a hole in his incredibly busy schedule, and the video was shot in our home town of Nord-Odal over three hectic days. We wanted something different and unexpected and strange, and we love the surrealist feel of this video.

The video for “Liberator” can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/fSTDNCwrdAc

A
“Marrow” is MADDER MORTEM’s seventh full-length album, and one in which the band pursue a heavier, doomier, but at the same time, catchier, path, with Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s powerful vocals leading the way through eleven tracks that range freely over a variety of genres and soundscapes; from delicate ballads to powerful metal, via folk/prog and a touch of the avant-garde.

Produced by BP M. Kirkevaag, and mastered by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid, and with artwork by the legendary artist Thore Hansen, “Marrow” hit the streets on the 21 September on Dark Essence Records in Digipak CD, Digital, and Limited Edition Green Vinyl Gatefold LP formats.
