Atrox PR2

Norway’s ATROX, whose sixth full-length album “Monocle” was released on Dark Essence Records last year, have announced that they will be adding guitarist Steffen Berg to their lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass,  and Andreas Kjøl Berg on drums.

Although this won’t be his first appearance on stage with ATROX, Berg, who has played in bands such as TALRUSHA, CHILLTON JAMES, AFROCADABRA, 1001 and CP&TSTO (CONOR PATRICK & THE SHOOTING TSAR ORCHESTRA) will make his first appearance as an official member of the lineup on ATROX’s following three dates in Portugal, whilst Alessandro Elide will fill in for Andreas on drums:

30 Nov: Side B Rocks, Alquener
01 Dec: Stereigun, Leiria
02 Dec: Metalpoint, Porto

In a statement from the band, guitarist Eivind explained the thinking behind the addition of  a new guitarist:

Since the complete band/line-up is located in 2 different locations (Rune S lives in Sweden and the rest of us in Trondheim, Norway),  there have been several occasions when we have found ourselves in dire need of a live (session) guitarist.  Last year, for instance,  we needed  a stand-in for Rune for our gig at ProgPower Europe, and we asked Steffen if he could step in – which he did, and he did a great job.   And, as some of us had worked with Steffen before on other musical projects, and  knowing what a great guitar player he is, the connection was already there.

We are also cognisant of  the fact that future ATROX gigs will most likely happen without Rune S, so we felt that now is the right time to including another member into the band.  We asked Steffen if he was interested in becoming a fulltime member, not only to play live, but also to join the creative side of ATROX, and, luckily for us, he said yes.

Steffen himself added:

I actually already knew most of the guys,  and when Rune F. asked me if I’d like to fill in as a live guitarist at Prog Power last year I knew it would be a lot of fun.  To my ears ATROX’s music has always sounded quite different from all the other bands around, and I really do believe they have developed something unique,  which I find very interesting.  It will be a blast writing and touring with these guys in the future!

ATROX are currently working on new material and recently released the single “System Scan” on Dark Essence Records, which is available to stream or download at the following https://darkessencerecords.lnk.to/9XQ7p

With their debut full-length album “Mother Culture” having hit the streets on Dark Essence Records last month, Norwegian blackgazers AVAST have today premiered a video for a track from the album.

The video for the track “The World Belongs to Man” can be seenbelow and at https://youtu.be/s_pYSniSOTk.

a
About the track itself, the band had this to say:

“The World Belongs to Man” is the contemporary story of humankind and reflects where we find ourselves today as we begin to realise that our way of life is slowly killing the planet.  The song also express anger and frustration at not being able to stop this process, knowing that to be able to do so would require such radical political, economic and cultural changes that certain powerful people would lose both money and power in the process.

Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA), Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums. Together  they fuse the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, and whose lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

Svartelder Promo18B

Norwegian Black Metallers SVARTELDER have today revealed details of their second full-length album “Pits” which is set for release on Dusktone in January 2019.

Founder and frontman Doedsadmiral (NORDJEVEL, DOEDSVANGR, ENEPSIGOS) shared some information about the album:

“Despite there being a theme running through the lyrics of its seven tracks,  “Pits” is not a concept album.  Nor was it ever our intention to make it one. It  is an album that explores ones deepest pain and misery.  That difficult battle to crawl out of the pit of despair and back to the world, only to find that the world has deteriorated into something lifeless and miserable. So much so, in fact, that you just want to let go and once again fall back into your pit .

“With our previous releases, the debut full-length “Pyres” and the “Askbundet” EP, we felt that SVARTELDER was still finding itself, and with “Pits” we have pushed ourselves even further musically.  As an album “Pits” is more, aggressive and more melancholic than its predecessors.  In fact, you could say that “Pits” is more of all that makes SVARTELDER what it is”.

To give fans a taste of what they can expect from “Pits”, SVARTELDER have debuted a track from the album, which can be heard below and on  YouTube at  https://youtu.be/w9oyjXDQDdc

A
“Pits” was mixed and mastered by Patric at the WSL Studios in France,  whilst much of the recording itself was done in the individual studios of band members Doedsadmiral on vocals,  Tjalve on bass and guitars, Renton on synth and Spektre on drums.

Tracklisting  for “Pits” is as follows:

Part.I
Part.II
Part.III
Part.IV
Part.V
Part.VI
Part.VII

Ljungblut LivePR

Formed in 2005 by Kim Ljung  as a vehicle for material he didn’t think would be suitable for  either SEIGMEN or ZEROMANCER , bands for whom he is both the bassist and main songwriter, LJUNGBLUT eventually expanded from a solo project, which saw the release of three albums, into a fully fledged band.  Dan Heide (ZEROMANCER, RED7) on guitars, Ted Skogmann (APOPTYGMA BERZERK) on drums , Joakim Brendsrød on keys and Sindre Pedersen on bass, joined Ljung, on keys and vocals, and, as a quintet, the band released two independent albums with Norwegian lyrics.

Ljungblut 05 by Tom LundPR

Encompassing a wide range of tempos and dynamics,  “Villa Carlotta 5959” is an album that presents the listeners with a cohesive sound and a melancholy mood, swathing Ljung’s characteristic vocals in vintage synths and instruments .    Recorded live in the studio and mixed by Alex Møklebust (SEIGMEN / ZEROMANCER) and Terje Johannesen, guest artists on “Villa Carlotta 5959” include Ljunggren (A-HA, ZEROMANCER), Ginge Anvik (SUBGUD, soundtrack composer) and  Terje Johannesen.

Ragnarok and Devo

Ragnarok in the studio with Devo

Twenty five years after having been formed by iconic drummer Jontho, veteran Norwegian Black Metallers RAGNAROK have entered the studio to begin work on what will be the band’s ninth full-length album.  The, as yet unnamed,  album is expected to be released during late May 2019 on Agonia Records.

Work on the album is progressing well, with drum tracks having already been laid and work on guitars having begun. As with RAGNAROK’s last three albums, “Psychopathology” (2016), “Malediction” (2012) and “Collectors of the King” (2010),  the band has chosen to record in Sweden’s Endarker Studio, with Devo (MARDUK) once again producing, because, as Jontho, who has now switched roles from drummer to frontman,  explained:

Why change something that works?  We know the studio so well by now and how good the facilities are, and,  after three albums,  Devo really understands what RAGNAROK wants and how we work.  He’s a great producer and we’re really looking forward to seeing what he does the new material.

RAGNAROK will head for Canada later this month to appear at the Messe des Morts Festival in Montreal, and have been confirmed to appear at next year’s  legendary Inferno Metal Festival in Oslo, Norway on the 19th April.

Eccentric and Prolific  are two adjectives that perfectly describe Norwegian Psychedelic Prog Folk Rockers  TUSMØRKE who are ready to release their third album in twelve months.  Titled “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1”, it will hit the streets on the 30th November on Karisma Records.

As a taster, the band have released a single taken from the album.  The track, “Kjentmannen” can be heard below as well as streamed and downloaded at https://karismarecords.lnk.to/kjentmannen

A
Being a band that moves fast, there is so much of TUSMØRKE’s material that gets left out, either through lack of space or lack of studio time, therefore, as the “vol 1” part of the album title suggests “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.

It is also a concept album that explores the rich history and mythology of Norway’s capital city Oslo. Vardøger are premonitions that precede an actual event. Utburder are infants who are abandoned in the woods at birth and whose haunting cries reverberate eerily through the night . So here you have the album in a nutshell – the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted.

With artwork by the renowned Norwegian artist Arne Bendik Sjur, tracklisting for “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” as follows:

  1. Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen
  2. Hovedøya
  3. Gamle Oslo
  4. Djevelen fra Oslo
  5. Kjentmannen
  6. Akers Akropolis
  7. Alvene i Oslo
  8. Gamle Aker Kjerke

“Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition vinyl formats.  The  first LP will be released on transparent orange vinyl (limited to 700 copies) with a 4 page lyric booklet and an A2 poster, and is now available to pre-order in all formats from https://tusm-rke.bandcamp.com/album/osloborgerlig-tusm-rke-vard-ger-og-utburder-vol-1

As well as the upcoming releases, TUSMØRKE, who are known for their offbeat sense of humour,  are treating fans to a new video for a track from their previous album “Fjernsyn i farver”.  Directed by Aleksander U. Serigstad, the video, for the track “Tøyens Hemmelighet” is even more amusing and out there than their previous forays, and  sees the intrepid band members being lured into the Oslo Botanical Gardens by a mysterious figure who goes by the name of Zatek.

The video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/EvhRlAFxQG0

A
Featuring members of WOBBLER, JORDSJØ and ALWANZATAR,  TUSMØRKE’s lineup fields an almost dizzying variety of instruments,  and is comprised of  Benediktator on Bass, vocals, Glockenspiel and percussion, Krizla on Flute, vocals, electronics and percussion,  The Phenomenon Marxo Solinas on Minimoog Model D, Korg CX3, William de Blaise on harpsichord, Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, Mellotron M400, Hammond C3, Wurlitzer 200 and Solina String Ensemble, and HlewagastiR on Drums and percussion.

With their sixth full-length album “Villa Carlotta 5959” set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 2nd November, Norwegian Alternative Rockers LJUNGBLUT have released a second single from the album.   The track “235” can be streamed or downloaded at http://phonofile.link/ljungblut-235

Commenting on the track, and its rather unusual name of “235”, LJUNGBLUT founder Kim Ljung had this to say:

Why 235? A Manchester casino goes by this name. Lorry (ZEROMANCER band member and LJUNGBLUT sound engineer) and I were  there some years ago.  Lorry was doing well with the chips up until the point where I convinced him to head for the Roulette wheel. All on red. Broke in no time. Inspiration.

Sindre (bass) wrote this one. He sent me a demo and asked me if it had the the right feel to make it a LJUNGBLUT track. Of course it had. I loved it instantly! Its stomping beat and the blend of both laid back and feisty guitars, triggered off a wave of words and ideas for vocals.

His way of thinking about music is different to mine. Which is great and refreshing. Same goes for Dan (guitars) who has also written several songs on the upcoming album “Villa Carlotta 5959”. The guys have really cracked the code on how to compose songs in real Blut-fashion. I believe “235” was the very last song on the album that we rehearsed together, and made ready for live-recording, with  some twists regarding notes, and re-arranging.  Plus lifting the track up one key, meant that I had to push it vocally a bit more. It definitely suited the lyrics and the energy of “235”.

For the mix, Alex (SEIGMEN/ZEROMANCER bandmember and LJUNGBLUT co-producer/mixer) and I decided to keep the room alive. We pushed up all faders for mono and stereo-room to get the live-feel even more present in the track.

The lyrics are quite easy. It has obsessive-compulsive disorder written all over it. I think everyone in the band can relate to these words to a certain extent!

“Villa Carlotta 5959” is, in fact, the last in the trilogy of the Norwegian language albums and in it Ljung creates smorgasbord filled with fascinating subjects ranging from the historical and factual, such as the tracks “Hasselblad”, which is about the 12 Hasselblad cameras left behind on the surface of the Moon, and “Superga”, which refers to the province of Turin, Italy, best known for  its Cathedral and the plane crash that killed the Torino football team in 1949, to the personal ,  with tracks like “Min Krig” (My war) and “Aldri helt stille” (Never completely quiet), which address the subject of Ljung’s chronic migraines.

Encompassing a wide range of tempos and dynamics,  “Villa Carlotta 5959” presents the listeners with a cohesive sound and a melancholy mood, swathing Ljung’s characteristic vocals in vintage synths and instruments .

Dobbeltgjenger PR1

With their second full-length album “Limbohead” having hit the streets in March of this year on Karisma Records, Norway’s DOBBELTGJENGER have given fans a brand new single with which to fill the void in between releases.

Titled “Paper Cutter”, the single is available to stream and download at https://KarismaRecords.lnk.to/PaperCutter

Dobbeltgjenger PaperCutter PR

DOBBELTGJENGER’s lineup of Sondre Veland (MAJOR PARKINSON,  OSSICLES) on drums, Jakob Sønnesyn (DEPRESNO,  9 GRADER NORD) on bass, Vegard Wikne (OCEAN OF LOTION) on guitars and vocals, and Knut Martin Rasmussen Langeland on guitar,  prefer to eschew conventional labels

in order to produce “straight-to-the-point” and refreshing alternative rock songs without being shackled by any “genre” pre-conceptions.

“Limbohead” itself has been described as a “colourful, varied and addictive rock album”,  which pretty much sums up DOBBELTGJENGER, whose lyrics tell tales of deep-rooted neuroticism,  and whose eclectic  sound contains contagious grooves, a futuristic guitar sound and soulful rock vocals.  They also clearly demonstrate that as a band DOBBELTGJENGER is not averse to  injecting a dose of fun into the proceedings now and then.

When a band’s members all come from backgrounds as diverse as classical piano, electronica, prog and hard-rock, and if they manage to pull it all together in a consummate fashion to create a unique sound, you would be safe to guess that the band was Norway’s OAK.   And, with their latest full-length album “False Memory Archive” due out on Karisma Records on the 19th October,  the Pop/Rockers have released the title track as a single, about which they have this to say:

If you are somewhat loose with everyone’s  conception of what ‘Pop’ actually is, then  the track “False Memory Archive” is the album’s pop leitmotif,  which still unmistakably sounds like OAK.  It also happens to be the album’s title track and, as such, it serves as a kind of introduction to the theme of the whole album.  It is a song that appears  light and happy in its expression, but all the while it still contains its fair share of darkness

Since starting out as a folk-rock duo, and releasing their 2013 debut album “Lighthouse”, OAK’s lineup of Øystein Sootholtet (Bass, guitars, banjo, keys & programming), Simen Valldal Johannessen (vocals, piano, keys & lyrics), Sigbjørn Reiakvam (drums, percussion, programming & keys), Ole Michael Bjørndal (guitars) and Stephan Hvinden (guitars), have made considerable strides as both musicians and songwriters as their sophomore album demonstrates.

There is still a nod in the direction of the debut full-length, but “False Memory Archive” is both darker and groovier , whilst retaining that successful amalgam of sound that is neither wholly progressive pop, nor wholly progressive rock,  but which is absolutely trademark OAK  and is comprised of catchy elements and stunning vocal harmonies, which create that unique duality that defines them as a band.
