Ljungblut PR2

Karisma Records have revealed details of “Villa Carlotta 5959”, the upcoming release from Alternative Rockers LJUNGBLUT, as well as releasing the first single from the album.  The single, for the track “Hasselblad”,  whose cover features a photo by the photographer Bjørn Opsahl and a guest appearance by A-HA and ZEROMANCER’s Erik Ljunggren,  along with his wide array of analogue synths,  can  be heard below, and is available to purchase and stream from https://ljungblut.bandcamp.com/track/hasselblad as well as from  various streaming and digital services via http://phonofile.link/hasselblad

A
About the track, band founder Kim Ljung had this to say:

It was just one of those days. An early morning.

I read somewhere about the twelve Hasselblad cameras left on the moon. Made some fresh coffee and locked myself into the studio without any particular ideas in my head.
In a few hours it was all there. Lyrics and everything.

A real special feeling when it happens. The guys loved the demo. A few weeks later we rehearsed “Hasselblad” as a band, keeping it close to the original idea. Of course, Ted added  a real great drum-pattern. It was only just over a 2-minute arrangement though.

Right after I wrote it, I was visting Erik Ljunggren in his studio. Blown away by the collection of modular and vintage synthesizers, I asked him if he wanted to contribute for the end part. The Arp 2600 and the Oberheim Matrix creating most of the magic. All analogue. It was perfect.

The drums, the bass, the guitar (with the Morley flanger pedal), the Omni and the Roland strings were all recorded live. I believe it was the third take.

Sincerely happy with this one. Enjoy.

Ljungblut Hasselblad artwork PR

When he formed LJUNGBLUT  in 2005, Ljung was looking for a vehicle for the material he didn’t think was right for either SEIGMEN or ZEROMANCER, for whom he is the bassist and main songwriter.  Three solo albums later, LJUNGBLUT evolved further with the addition of full-time members, some of whom had collaborated on LJUNGBLUT’s  first two albums.  Joining Ljung (keys and vocals) are Dan Heide (ZEROMANCER, RED7) on guitars, Ted Skogmann (APOPTYGMA BERZERK) on drums , Joakim Brendsrød on keys and Sindre Pedersen on bass, and, as a quintet, the band released two independent albums with Norwegian lyrics.

“Villa Carlotta 5959”, which will be LJUNGBLUT’s sixth full-length album, is the last in the trilogy of the Norwegian language albums.  It is an album in which Ljung explores matters both historical and personal.  Whilst tracks like “Hasselblad”, about the 12 Hasselblad cameras left behind on the surface of the Moon, and “Superga”, which refers to the province of Turin, Italy, best known for  its Cathedral and the plane crash that killed the Torino football team in 1949, deal with actual events and places, tracks like “Min Krig” (My war) and “Aldri helt stille” (Never completely quiet), are much more personal, dealing, as they do, with Ljung’s chronic migraines.

The basis of “Villa Carlotta 5959” having been recorded live in the studio and mixed by Alex Møklebust (SEIGMEN / ZEROMANCER) and Terje Johannesen, Ljung’s characteristic vocals are embraced  by a plethora of vintage synths and instruments.  With its wide range of tempos and dynamics,  “Villa Carlotta 5959” presents the listeners with a cohesive sound and a melancholy mood.

Guest artists on “Villa Carlotta 5959” include Ljunggren (A-HA, ZEROMANCER), Ginge Anvik (SUBGUD, soundtrack composer) and  Terje Johannesen.  With artwork by Hanne-Christine Flåten, track listing for “Villa Carlotta 5959” is as follows:

  1. Hasselblad
  2. Oktober
  3. Til Warszawa
  4. 235
  5. Superga
  6. Diamant
  7. Himmelen som vet
  8. Ohnesorg
  9. Aldri helt stille
  10. Min Krig

Rhys Marsh PR 1 Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland

Karisma Records have welcomed singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer RHYS MARSH to their roster, and plan to release MARSH’s latest album “October After All” in early 2019.

MARSH, born in London, but now living in Trondheim, Norway, began his career in 2008, and, over the next five years released three studio albums, and one live album, under the name of RHYS MARSH AND THE AUTUMN GHOST, with a lineup that featured members of JAGA JAZZIST, ANEKDOTEN, WOBBLER, WHITE WILLOW, ÄNGLAGÅRD, HIGHASAKITE, EMMERHOFF & THE MELANCHOLY BABIES, FLASHBACK CARUSO AND THE DIVINE COMEDY.

Rhys Marsh PR2 Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland

In the spring of 2014, MARSH joined with Ketil Vestrum Einarsen and Mattias Olsson, and together the three musicians formed the KAUKASUS project which released the highly acclaimed debut album “I”.  The spring of 2015 saw the release of “Midnight Twilight” by MARSH’s original London-based band MANDALA.

In the midst of all these projects and collaborations, MARSH found time to release his first solo endeavour in the Autumn of 2013.  The five-song collection of covers was titled “Suspended In A Weightless Wind”,  and included covers of NICK DRAKE’S ‘Things Behind The Sun’ and KING CRIMSON’S ‘Moonchild’.

Rhys Marsh PR3 Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland

This was followed by MARSH’s debut solo album “Sentiment” in the autumn of 2014.  Written and recorded over a two-year period, “Sentiment” was to prove to be MARSH’s darkest and most progressive, and yet most accessible, work to date.  Its follow up, “The Black Sun Shining”, was a 42-minute song-cycle, written and recorded in only seven days.

Rhys Marsh PR5 Nils Kristian Thompson Eikeland

Since then, MARSH has been working on his next album,  “October After All”, which Karisma Records will release on a date as yet to be decided.  Once again MARSH is handling most of the instrumental duties, but the album will also feature contributions from Arve Henriksen on trumpet and Kåre Kolve on saxophone, as well as a choir which includes the talents of Rohey, Silje Leirvik, Anders Bjermeland and Tim Bowness.

Madder Mortem New PR

Dark Essence Records are today making available one more track from “Marrow”, the upcoming opus from Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM ahead of it’s 21 September release.

The track, “Liberator”,  can be heard below and is available to purchase and stream at http://maddermortem.bandcamp.com/track/liberator as well as from all the usual streaming services

A
The band describes “Liberator” as being “Really a Madder roller coaster, a sense of urgency powering the soaring-then-plummeting changes of feeling and style, but with a meaty groove pushing it all forwards. It’s progressive in parts, but yet very melody-driven, and a perfect song for driving a little too fast.

“Lyrically, “Liberator” is a song about picking yourself up and going for what you want, no holds barred. It’s easy to lose yourself to the unending pressure to stay in line, but you need to shake off the grasping hands that would hold you back and fire on all cylinders. Life is short, and we all spend too much time on things that mean nothing to us. Don’t let the voices of “reason” get to you. Let the world end not with a whimper, but with a bang”.

“Marrow”,  the band’s seventh full-length album, finds MADDER MORTEM pursuing a heavier, doomier, but at the same time, catchier,  path.  It is a complex album, with Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s powerful vocals leading the way through eleven tracks that range freely over a variety of genres and soundscapes; from delicate ballads to powerful metal,  via folk/prog and a touch of the avant-garde.   It is this complexity, imbued as it is with all that is MADDER MORTEM, that makes “Marrow”  a very interesting prospect indeed.

According to the band, Marrow  is about “Sticking to the essence of yourself.  Your ideas, your thoughts, your values”,  and was produced by BP M. Kirkevaag, and mastered by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid.  With artwork by the legendary artist Thore Hansen, tracklisting for “Marrow” is as follows:

01. Untethered
02. Liberator
03. Moonlight Over Silver White
04. Until You Return
05. My Will Be Done
06. Far From Home
07. Marrow
08. White Snow, Red Shadows
09. Stumble On
10. Waiting To Fall
11. Tethered

Slegest PR 2018

“Introvert”, the upcoming third studio album from SLEGEST, sees the Norwegians well and truly solidifying that bone crunching mix of black metal and classic heavy rock that is their trademark sound.    Scheduled for release on Dark Essence Records on the 16th November, the label has today released the first single from the album.

The track,  “Undergangens Tankesmed”, can be heard below and is available to purchase from https://slegest.bandcamp.com/track/undergangens-tankesmed

A
Filled with tasty riffs, hooks that pull you in, and a vicious catchiness, the 80’s feel  makes itself subtly felt on the new album.  As for the first single, Slegest’s  frontman and main composer Ese comments:

“Undergangens Tankesmed” is about the fact that all you wish for, and your true inner dreams, eventually lead you down a path to your own destruction. So you might as well just follow your heart and enjoy the adrenaline-pumping ride downwards!”

Bass and vocals for “Introvert”  were recorded in Systrond and engineered by Ese.  Drums and guitars were recorded at the  Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen with  Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen engineering the drums,  whilst the guitars were engineered by Herbrand Larsen, who also mixed the album.  Iver Sandøy handled the mastering.

With cover artwork by Anders Røkkum, “Introvert” will be available in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats.

2 Undergangens Tankesmed

Avast PR2 Katharina Ueland

Skillfully fusing the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, Norwegian blackgazers AVAST are set to release their debut full-length album Mother Culture on October 26th through Dark Essence Records.

As a prelude to the release of Mother Culture, Dark Essence Records has released the title track as a single, which is available from and can be heard below and at https://avastband.bandcamp.com/track/mother-culture.

A
Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA),  Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums, AVAST is a band that reviewers and promoters place in a variety of genres. Whilst the band’s roots lie in punk rock and hardcore, it would be safe to say that blackgaze and post-black metal are genres that could be applied to AVAST, given that AVAST’s lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

The members of AVAST themselves describe Mother Culture as “a concept album that examines the myths upon which modern civilization is based”, and “an apocalyptic tale about the rise and fall of human civilization, and how we have exploited the Earth’s resources to such a degree that we are now standing on the brink of our own extinction. Musically the record borrows equally from the black metal and post-rock genres, and lyrically it draws inspiration from Daniel Quinn’s philosophical novel Ishmael.”

With artwork by Ole Nymoen, the track-listing for Mother Culture is as follows:

  1. Mother Culture
  2. The Myth
  3. Birth of Man
  4. The World Belongs to Man
  5. An Earnest Desire
  6. Man Belongs to the World

Oak PR1

Adding yet another string to their already impressive Progressive bow, Karisma Records have inked a deal with OAK,  and will release the band’s sophomore full-length album “False Memory Archive” on the 19th October.

In anticipation of the release, Karisma have debuted  the first track from the album “We, the Drowned” which can be heard below and at http://oakinoslo.bandcamp.com/album/false-memory-archive

A
Starting life as a folk-rock duo, OAK’s current lineup of Simen Valldal Johannessen on vocals, piano, keys and lyrics, Sigbjørn Reiakvam on bass, acoustic / electric guitars, banjo, keys and programming, and Øystein Sootholtet on Drums, percussion, programming and keys, come from a diverse background that spans classical piano to electronica, prog- and hard-rock, and includes references to the alternative scene as well as progressive rock.   The pulling together of all these different elements and skills helped create the rather unique OAK sound, and resulted in the 2013 release of the band’s debut album “Lighthouse”.

Oak PR2

It’s now five years later, and OAK are back with “False Memory Archive”, which, with its nods in the direction of “Lighthouse”, make it a natural continuation of their debut. Meticulously crafted, with an increased use of electronics and low bass frequencies, “False Memory Archive” is both darker and groovier that its predecessor, whilst still maintaining that familiar Oak sound, which is neither wholly progressive pop, nor progressive rock, but a happy amalgam of both.

Having  taken several steps both as songwriters and musicians, OAK have succeeded in producing a sophomore album that  ended up in a slightly darker and more progressive territory, but one in which the light still shines through in the shape of catchy elements and stunning vocal harmonies, which create that unique duality that defines them as a band.

Recorded in Oslo at the Ljugekroken Studio and the Tøyen Church, “False Memory Archive” was  mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren and Oak at the Fascination Studios.  With front cover artwork by  Lisa Love and design by Deformat, and featuring a guest appearance on guitars by Bjorn Riis, tracklisting for “False Memory Archive” is as follows:

  1. We, The Drowned
  2. Claire De Lune
  3. False Memory Archuve
  4. Lost Causes (Bjorn Riis guesting on guitar)
  5. Intermezzo
  6. The Lights
  7. These Are The Stars We’re Aiming For
  8. Transparent Eyes
  9. Psalm 51

The period between the 2015 release of their album “Livlaus”, and the upcoming release of their third full-length album “Element”, has not been easy for ORKAN. But, having fought their way through the ravages of cancer and a rare, muscular disease, the Norwegians are back with a ferocious album that deals with the power of the four elements, and stands as an homage to the unforgiving strength of the earth as witnessed by the landscape of their native land – the Island of Stord.

It is not surprising, having been conceived and recorded during that demanding period in the band’s history, that “Element” was a particularly difficult album to make. Nevertheless, taxing as it was to both mind and body, the result has proved to be as rewarding as it was difficult to achieve.

Giving you a taste of what to expect from “Element”, Dark Essence Records have today debuted the track ” I flammar skal du eldast”, which can be heard below and at http://orkan1.bandcamp.com/track/i-flammar-skal-du-eldast

With photography by Atle Helland and artwork by Tom Korsvold, the tracklisting on “Element” is as follows:

1. Lenker
2. I flammar skal du eldast
3. Iskald til beinet
4. Motstraums
5. Avmakt
6. Den våte grav
7. Heim

Offering more layered songs and complex production, “Element” is not made to pass you by, but to draw you in and totally envelop you. The album is set to hit the streets on Dark Essence Records on October 5th, 2018 in CD and Digital formats. The album is now available to pre-order from:

ORKAN is a band that sets itself apart from its peers by virtue of the fact that its highly technically skilled members are able to conjure up an uncompromising, emotion-filled and all-enveloping darkness. Formed in 2008 by TAAKE’s live guitarist Gjermund Fredheim (notorious for having created Black Metal’s only banjo solo) and drummer Rune Nesse, ORKAN’s lineup is completed by bassist Sindre Hillesdal and frontman Einar Fjelldal (ex-GRAVEMACHINE).

With their seventh full-length album “Marrow” set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 21 September, Norwegian Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM have released a new video for a track from the album.

Titled “Far From Home” the symbol-laden video is by the noted Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu  and can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/8DIDksyQJUk

About “Far From Home”, the band commented  that the track “grew out of an early morning’s vocals idea, and into a very Madder song. Everything we love is here: contrasts and melody, fragility and heaviness, anguish and hope. The lyrics are about a long night’s uneasy journey into day, about the gut-wrenching worry that rides on the back of truly caring for someone”.

Regarding the video itself, and the collaboration with Chioreanu, who has a long-standing history with Dark Essence Records and the Norwegian music scene, Madder Mortem went on to say:

“When we approached artist Costin Chioreanu about creating the video for “Far From Home”, we gave him the music, the lyrics, and otherwise an absolutely free rein. The result is his unique interpretation of the song and the feeling, and when we first saw it, we were all tearing up. Costin gave the song another dimension, and we are so grateful to him for expanding our music into the visual realm”.

Madder Mortem New PR

As an album, the eleven-track “Marrow” is complex, covering a wide variety of genres and sounds that range from moments of folk/prog to avant-garde.  From delicate ballads to harsh metal, it  is more doomy  than its predecessor “Red in Tooth and Claw”, as well as being at times both heavier, and catchier.  It is, according to the band “about sticking to the essence of yourself.  Your ideas, your thoughts, your values”.

“Marrow” comes in CD Digipak, Digital and Limited Edition transparent green vinyl and is available from all the usual sellers, or can be ordered from the following:
