Atrox PR2

Norway’s ATROX, whose sixth full-length album “Monocle” was released on Dark Essence Records last year, have announced that they will be adding guitarist Steffen Berg to their lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass,  and Andreas Kjøl Berg on drums.

Although this won’t be his first appearance on stage with ATROX, Berg, who has played in bands such as TALRUSHA, CHILLTON JAMES, AFROCADABRA, 1001 and CP&TSTO (CONOR PATRICK & THE SHOOTING TSAR ORCHESTRA) will make his first appearance as an official member of the lineup on ATROX’s following three dates in Portugal, whilst Alessandro Elide will fill in for Andreas on drums:

30 Nov: Side B Rocks, Alquener
01 Dec: Stereigun, Leiria
02 Dec: Metalpoint, Porto

In a statement from the band, guitarist Eivind explained the thinking behind the addition of  a new guitarist:

Since the complete band/line-up is located in 2 different locations (Rune S lives in Sweden and the rest of us in Trondheim, Norway),  there have been several occasions when we have found ourselves in dire need of a live (session) guitarist.  Last year, for instance,  we needed  a stand-in for Rune for our gig at ProgPower Europe, and we asked Steffen if he could step in – which he did, and he did a great job.   And, as some of us had worked with Steffen before on other musical projects, and  knowing what a great guitar player he is, the connection was already there.

We are also cognisant of  the fact that future ATROX gigs will most likely happen without Rune S, so we felt that now is the right time to including another member into the band.  We asked Steffen if he was interested in becoming a fulltime member, not only to play live, but also to join the creative side of ATROX, and, luckily for us, he said yes.

Steffen himself added:

I actually already knew most of the guys,  and when Rune F. asked me if I’d like to fill in as a live guitarist at Prog Power last year I knew it would be a lot of fun.  To my ears ATROX’s music has always sounded quite different from all the other bands around, and I really do believe they have developed something unique,  which I find very interesting.  It will be a blast writing and touring with these guys in the future!

ATROX are currently working on new material and recently released the single “System Scan” on Dark Essence Records, which is available to stream or download at the following https://darkessencerecords.lnk.to/9XQ7p

With their debut full-length album “Mother Culture” having hit the streets on Dark Essence Records last month, Norwegian blackgazers AVAST have today premiered a video for a track from the album.

The video for the track “The World Belongs to Man” can be seenbelow and at https://youtu.be/s_pYSniSOTk.

a
About the track itself, the band had this to say:

“The World Belongs to Man” is the contemporary story of humankind and reflects where we find ourselves today as we begin to realise that our way of life is slowly killing the planet.  The song also express anger and frustration at not being able to stop this process, knowing that to be able to do so would require such radical political, economic and cultural changes that certain powerful people would lose both money and power in the process.

Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA), Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums. Together  they fuse the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, and whose lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

Svartelder Promo18B

Norwegian Black Metallers SVARTELDER have today revealed details of their second full-length album “Pits” which is set for release on Dusktone in January 2019.

Founder and frontman Doedsadmiral (NORDJEVEL, DOEDSVANGR, ENEPSIGOS) shared some information about the album:

“Despite there being a theme running through the lyrics of its seven tracks,  “Pits” is not a concept album.  Nor was it ever our intention to make it one. It  is an album that explores ones deepest pain and misery.  That difficult battle to crawl out of the pit of despair and back to the world, only to find that the world has deteriorated into something lifeless and miserable. So much so, in fact, that you just want to let go and once again fall back into your pit .

“With our previous releases, the debut full-length “Pyres” and the “Askbundet” EP, we felt that SVARTELDER was still finding itself, and with “Pits” we have pushed ourselves even further musically.  As an album “Pits” is more, aggressive and more melancholic than its predecessors.  In fact, you could say that “Pits” is more of all that makes SVARTELDER what it is”.

To give fans a taste of what they can expect from “Pits”, SVARTELDER have debuted a track from the album, which can be heard below and on  YouTube at  https://youtu.be/w9oyjXDQDdc

A
“Pits” was mixed and mastered by Patric at the WSL Studios in France,  whilst much of the recording itself was done in the individual studios of band members Doedsadmiral on vocals,  Tjalve on bass and guitars, Renton on synth and Spektre on drums.

Tracklisting  for “Pits” is as follows:

Part.I
Part.II
Part.III
Part.IV
Part.V

Presse Ljungblut 6 av Tom LundPR

With their sixth full-length album “Villa Carlotta 5959” having  hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 2nd November, Norwegian Alternative Rockers LJUNGBLUT have today revealed an atmospheric new video for the track  “Himmelen som vet”.  The video, directed and shot by Edvard Brendsrød,  can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/otl9HvJSkns

A
To  celebrate the release of “Villa Carlotta 5959” LJUNGBLUT are set to play their only live dates of 2018.  The shows will take place in Norway as follows:

09 Nov:  Papirhuset, Tønsberg
10 Nov:  Papirhuset, Tønsberg
12 Nov:  Kulturkirken Jacob, Oslo

Ljungblut LivePR

Formed in 2005 by Kim Ljung  as a vehicle for material he didn’t think would be suitable for  either SEIGMEN or ZEROMANCER , bands for whom he is both the bassist and main songwriter, LJUNGBLUT eventually expanded from a solo project, which saw the release of three albums, into a fully fledged band.  Dan Heide (ZEROMANCER, RED7) on guitars, Ted Skogmann (APOPTYGMA BERZERK) on drums , Joakim Brendsrød on keys and Sindre Pedersen on bass, joined Ljung, on keys and vocals, and, as a quintet, the band released two independent albums with Norwegian lyrics.

Ljungblut 05 by Tom LundPR

Encompassing a wide range of tempos and dynamics,  “Villa Carlotta 5959” is an album that presents the listeners with a cohesive sound and a melancholy mood, swathing Ljung’s characteristic vocals in vintage synths and instruments .    Recorded live in the studio and mixed by Alex Møklebust (SEIGMEN / ZEROMANCER) and Terje Johannesen, guest artists on “Villa Carlotta 5959” include Ljunggren (A-HA, ZEROMANCER), Ginge Anvik (SUBGUD, soundtrack composer) and  Terje Johannesen.

With artwork by Hanne-Christine Flåten , “Villa Carlotta 5959” is available in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats, as well as a Limited Edition Turquoise LP,  and is available from all the usual retailers and streaming services, as well as direct from Karisma Records at

Black avantgarde Norwegians ENSLAVED recently toured across Europe and the United Kingdom alongside co-headliners High On Fire and support band KRAKOW. We caught up with Ivar from Enslaved and Frode from KRAKOW at the bands’ sold out London show to see how the tour has gone and to find out who is willing to dish the dirt on each other’s bands. Formed in Bergen, Norway, in 1991, Enslaved had evolutionary zeal in their eyes from the start. Even as they emerged from the nascent Norwegian black metal scene of the early ‘90s, guitarist Ivar Bjørnson and vocalist/bassist Grutle Kjellson demonstrated a fervently idiosyncratic approach to making extreme music. By eschewing the wilful conservatism of their peers in favour of an outward-looking ethos, Enslaved’s reputation grew rapidly in the wake of extraordinary, epic albums like their primitive but insidious debut Vikingligr Veldi and its strident follow-up Frost (both 1994). By the late ‘90s, the band had morphed into a wildly progressive and adventurous beast, always retaining the core, aggressive tenets of their musical roots but increasingly in thrall to the limitless possibilities that music, in its entirety, truly presents. Widely acknowledged as a powerful and ferocious live band, Enslaved entered the 21stcentury by flexing new muscles on the acclaimed likes of 2003’s Below The Lights and its groundbreaking successor, Isa (2004). Now as much a part of the flourish progressive rock and metal realm as they were loyal servants of the extreme metal underground, Bergen’s finest hit a rich vein of form as the years passed, with albums as diverse and challenging as 2008’s Vertebrae and 2010’s Axioma Ethica Odini joyfully expanded the Enslaved musical universe, drawing in countless new acolytes along the way.

In 2015, Enslaved released their 13th studio album, In Times. A tour-de-force of hypnotic prog intensity and scabrous, blackened pomp, it exuded an air of completion and finality that led perfectly into 2016’s extravagant celebrations, as Enslaved marked their 25th anniversary with some truly life-changing shows that explored all shadows and hidden corners in the band’s colossal catalogue. In Times represented the end of an era and the opening of a gateway to somewhere entirely new.

Despite rarely pausing for breath – not just as a result of Enslaved’s hectic touring schedule, but also due to numerous extracurricular projects – Ivar and his comrades have somehow managed to piece together yet another full-length milestone in the shape of their 14th studio effort, the elegantly titled E. Written amid a burst of creativity, grabbed at the tail-end of the band’s 2016 US dates, the new album marks the majestic birth of a revitalised and newly inspired Enslaved. Against the logistical odds, a new dawn was coming.

An album full of revelatory moments, spine-tingling dynamics and exquisite but alien atmospheres, E showcases a refreshed Enslaved line-up via songs that take the band into unprecedented territory. From the grandiose, weather-beaten riff-scapes of 11-minute opener Storm Son to the wild, psychedelic frontier squall of Sacred Horse and the muscular, sax- powered shoegaze barrage of monstrous closer Hiindsiight, it is both a typically bold and fearless statement from this most inventive of modern metal bands and a thrilling sideways step that harnesses the spirit of old and sets it loose in a whirlwind of imagination. Conceptually, too, Enslaved are making giant forward strides. While past albums frequently focused on notions of individuality and isolation, E offers a transformative fresh perspective.

14 albums and 26 years into a career that shows no signs of losing neither momentum nor its magical, effervescent creative sheen, Enslaved are once again evolving before our ears and eyes. This time, however, even the sky is no limit. Stronger than ever and manifestly thrilled to be in such rude health, Ivar avows that life in Enslaved has never been more rewarding. And the best is yet to come.

KRAKOW was formed in Bergen, Norway in the fall of of 2005. The post metal collective received much praise and recognition for their special take on the genre with their second album diin, which was voted the 3rd best metal album of the year by Metal Hammer Norway in 2012.

Their third album, amaran, saw the band develop their style even further. The band made a unique and atmospheric record that stands out against its competition. With this album, the band explored both the calmer side of their sound, as well as the more experimental and drone aspects. This makes amaran a highly varied album, filled with both dreamy soundscapes and sinister, harsh atmospheres.

Following the laborious process of distilling two albums worth of material into one focused gem, the band then created their latest offering, minus. The pinnacle achievement of KRAKOW’s thirteen-year existence. After a year of recording, shaping, re-recording and refining, minus has been reduced to the bare essence of who KRAKOW are as individuals, as a group and as story tellers.  It’s an album that defies any attempts at genre definition and covers the heavy, the subtle, the melodic, the atonal, the groovy, the sluggish, the dense, the airy, the naked and always, always, that wall of sound where no light can escape.

With themes spanning from outer space to the hidden worlds deep below, travelling in time from the distant future to the near past like an inverted space odyssey, we are taken on a journey where “we all become stories”, in ways as much a reflection of the ones we tell, as a revelation of the ones we won’t.

Ragnarok and Devo

Ragnarok in the studio with Devo

Twenty five years after having been formed by iconic drummer Jontho, veteran Norwegian Black Metallers RAGNAROK have entered the studio to begin work on what will be the band’s ninth full-length album.  The, as yet unnamed,  album is expected to be released during late May 2019 on Agonia Records.

Work on the album is progressing well, with drum tracks having already been laid and work on guitars having begun. As with RAGNAROK’s last three albums, “Psychopathology” (2016), “Malediction” (2012) and “Collectors of the King” (2010),  the band has chosen to record in Sweden’s Endarker Studio, with Devo (MARDUK) once again producing, because, as Jontho, who has now switched roles from drummer to frontman,  explained:

Why change something that works?  We know the studio so well by now and how good the facilities are, and,  after three albums,  Devo really understands what RAGNAROK wants and how we work.  He’s a great producer and we’re really looking forward to seeing what he does the new material.

RAGNAROK will head for Canada later this month to appear at the Messe des Morts Festival in Montreal, and have been confirmed to appear at next year’s  legendary Inferno Metal Festival in Oslo, Norway on the 19th April.

Superlynx PR2

Dark Essence Records have inked a deal with the Norwegian doom/psych trio SUPERLYNX and are set to release what will be the band’s sophomore full-length album in the early part of 2019.

If you were to ask SUPERLYNX  about musical influences their answer would be something pretty much along the lines of “the sum of all the different music we all listen to and are inspired by”,  as opposed to specific bands . Doom, stoner rock, drone, psych, shoegaze, metal, old blues, jazz and classic rock all play a part in inspiring SUPERLYNX,,  whose members have a lot of music in common but also their own, individual, musical influences,  which they bring to the table.  SUPERLYNX follows no rules other than what sounds awesome and feels right.

Formed in 2013 by drummer Ole Teigen and bassist/vocalist Pia Isaksen, it had always been SUPERLYNX’s intention to remain a duo, but a meeting with guitarist Daniel Bakken, coupled with his performance during rehearsals, changed all that.  It was clear that he belonged in the band and SUPERLYNX became a fully-fledged trio.

Teigen (drums) hails from Tønsberg and has played guitar, piano/ syhth and drums in many bands since forming  MIDNATTSVREDE in 1994, including DØDHEIMSGARD, FRAMFERD, GRAND ALCHEMIST and  SKITLIV. For several years he also played in the psychedelic-electronic black metal band LOVEPLANET along with Isaksen,  who  started playing the piano as a little girl, and, whilst still In her early teens, began playing guitar and writing songs. She played and performed vocals in different bands in her home town of Moss, until she found her great love for the bass with the drone/doom band NEPHILA in 2004, and later with LOVEPLANET.  Daniel Bakken from Fredrikstad, has played bass and guitar since his early teens, and has been involved in both rock, goth and metal bands – AGHAST MANOR, NEBELHEXE, GOTHMINISTER, MAGENTA and GATE TO KHAOS to  name but a few. He has also co-written music for the movie “Sinister”.

Superlynx PR6

SUPERLYNX is definitely a band that enjoys performing live, known for an ability to deliver powerful and atmospheric shows.  They will be bringing their heavy, hypnotic, stage show to next year’s legendary Inferno Metal Festival in Oslo on the 19th April.

In the meantime you can get a taste of SUPERLYNX via a new video by Carl Eek Torgersen which shows the  band during rehearsals  performing three songs from their 2016 debut album “LVX”.  The video can be seen at https://youtu.be/x71-nZlRHLU

taake-7fjell PR3

If there is one thing that Hoest, the iconic leader and frontman of Norwegian Black Metallers TAAKE,  has demonstrated with his trademark Helnorsk Svartmetall  sound  over the band’s twenty five year career, it is that it is possible for the genre not only to survive, but also to thrive and re-generate itself into something fresh and relevant, whilst losing none of its traditional feel.

And alongside TAAKE for many years now has been the Dark Essence Records label, based, like the band itself, in Bergen, and well known not only for its roster of long-established and extremely successful exponents of Black and Extreme Metal, but also for its unerring ability to sniff out the best of the new generation of bands coming up today.

Now, this hugely successful partnership between label and band has come up with a collaboration that will see the release of “7 Fjell”.  This career-spanning, limited edition box set will be a one-time only issue of 1,000 copies, and will contain seven picture discs that comprise all of TAAKE’s full-length albums to date. Each individual disc of seven tracks each (no bonus tracks), will come in a die-cut sleeve, and also included in the box will be  a TAAKE slip mat for your record player!   Of the seven albums, the last four have never before been released as picture discs.

“7 Fjell”, which translated  means the “7 Mountains”,  is a reference to both the seven mountains that surround Bergen, as well as the seven albums themselves.  With artwork by HELHEIM’s H’grimnir, based on a photo by Peter Beste, the picture discs are as follows:

Black Metallers BLODARV have inked a deal with the Dutch record label SOULSELLER RECORDS for the release and world-wide distribution of the band’s upcoming full-length album “The Illuminating Darkness” which will be available in CD, Digital and 12″ Vinyl formats in 2019.

Aside from having  recently signed bands such as  USURPER, DEATHCULT, PATRIA and   GRAVDAL  to their roster, SOULSELLER RECORDS have also been instrumental in the official re-issues of various Black Metal classics classics from bands such as GORGOROTH, OPHTHALAMIA, VED BUENS ENDE, OLD FUNERAL, DEN SAAKALDTE, THORNIUM and ANCIENT, to name but a few.

Commenting on the decision to sign with SOULSELLER RECORDS, BLODARV had this to say:

We have to say that we are really looking forward to working with Soulseller –  a cooperation that will greatly benefit both the band and the fans. Soulseller have proven themselves to be a label of some note with a great many quality  releases over the years, and we are more than satisfied to be working with them on the upcoming album.

One of the things that was very important to us was that this album should also be released on Vinyl. Not only because many of our fans prefer vinyl over other formats, but also because as soon as we had written the first track,  we all felt that vinyl was where it belonged, and,  as a consequence,  the whole album was created with that particular medium in mind.

Another aspect to signing with Soulseller was the availability issue.  Up until now, once we had sold out of our releases at the official BLODARV store in Denmark it has been extremely difficult, not to mention very expensive, for our European fans and followers to get their hands on them.  Ordering from Mexico, where our previous label and their distro were situated,  meant that fans in Europe were hit with taxes, customs charges and prohibitive postal costs, whilst we ourselves could only stock a very small number, as all our releases had been limited to 1,000 copies.  With Soulseller this will all change.

There are, of course, a few more reasons why we are looking forward to this co operation, not least of which are trust, shared visions and goals, dedication, artistic freedom, and the excellent communication we have with Soulseller.

Eccentric and Prolific  are two adjectives that perfectly describe Norwegian Psychedelic Prog Folk Rockers  TUSMØRKE who are ready to release their third album in twelve months.  Titled “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1”, it will hit the streets on the 30th November on Karisma Records.

As a taster, the band have released a single taken from the album.  The track, “Kjentmannen” can be heard below as well as streamed and downloaded at https://karismarecords.lnk.to/kjentmannen

Being a band that moves fast, there is so much of TUSMØRKE’s material that gets left out, either through lack of space or lack of studio time, therefore, as the “vol 1” part of the album title suggests “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.

It is also a concept album that explores the rich history and mythology of Norway’s capital city Oslo. Vardøger are premonitions that precede an actual event. Utburder are infants who are abandoned in the woods at birth and whose haunting cries reverberate eerily through the night . So here you have the album in a nutshell – the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted.

With artwork by the renowned Norwegian artist Arne Bendik Sjur, tracklisting for “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” as follows:

  1. Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen
  2. Hovedøya
  3. Gamle Oslo
  4. Djevelen fra Oslo
  5. Kjentmannen
  6. Akers Akropolis
  7. Alvene i Oslo
  8. Gamle Aker Kjerke

“Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition vinyl formats.  The  first LP will be released on transparent orange vinyl (limited to 700 copies) with a 4 page lyric booklet and an A2 poster, and is now available to pre-order in all formats from https://tusm-rke.bandcamp.com/album/osloborgerlig-tusm-rke-vard-ger-og-utburder-vol-1

As well as the upcoming releases, TUSMØRKE, who are known for their offbeat sense of humour,  are treating fans to a new video for a track from their previous album “Fjernsyn i farver”.  Directed by Aleksander U. Serigstad, the video, for the track “Tøyens Hemmelighet” is even more amusing and out there than their previous forays, and  sees the intrepid band members being lured into the Oslo Botanical Gardens by a mysterious figure who goes by the name of Zatek.

The video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/EvhRlAFxQG0
