Scheduled for release on the 4th October, the self-titled debut album from Norwegian Jazz Rockers THE VERGE, offers up a veritable palette of sounds. Drawing on extreme improvisational rock and dreamy noise/dronescapes, it ranges from fiery melodic jazz to prog rock, from atmospheric free-improvisation to heavy riffs.

Having recently released a single from the album, Is It Jazz? Records now bring us a second taste of what to expect with the release of the track “Snake”,  which can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services at

https://orcd.co/theverge-snake

Commenting on the track, THE VERGE’s Emil Storløkken  had this to say:

“Snake”  started as a slightly strange ostinato, with an odd numbered time signature, that curls its way through the song. Then came the melody, with faster movements in the guitar and saxophone, adding something concrete but with an unsafe character.

We worked for a long time to find the perfect groove to drive the song. When we finally found this, we jammed out the powerful unison riff that breaks the circular motion. Like a snake leaping forth from the bushes and striking.

Consisting of seven original tracks composed by the different members of the band, “The Verge”,  is, not surprisingly, an album where each track differs significantly one from the other. It serves to showcase THE VERGE’s  ability to take their considerable musical skills and create an opportunity for spontaneous interplay,  with the ensembles  joyful attitude towards making music together leading to an album that is vibrant and multifaceted.

Recorded at the Duper Studio in 2021, and produced by  Vegard Lemme,  “The Verge”, whose  cover art is by Annika Linn Verdal Homme,  will be available in CD, LP and Digital formats and can be pre-ordered now from:

Webshop:  https://isitjazzrecords.no/

Track  listing for “The Verge” is as follows:

1. Nessesse
2. Hyperreality
3. Snake
4. Gratitude
5. Postludium
6. The Blast Supper
7. Patterns for Meditation

THE VERGE’s lineup of  Emil Storløkken Åse (PHOENIX, EMIL STORLØKKEN ÅSE SOLO) on Guitars , Aksel Rønning (COSMIC SWING ORCHESTRA, AKSEL RØNNING TRIO) on Saxophone and Flute, Alf Høines (CARAMEL 11, LEON RØSTEN TRIO) on Electric Bass,  and Ingvald Vassbø (KANAAN, JUNO) on Drums, first began playing together when they all attended the legendary Norwegian Jazz school NTNU.

Since then, their individual careers have branched off into various significant bands, giving them the chance to hone their skills not just in Norway, but also the within the European Jazz, Improv and Rock scenes. And it is now, thanks to Is It Jazz? Records,  that this eclectic cast of musicians have been given the  opportunity to demonstrate their uncanny ability to weave together so many different elements into one cohesive whole.

Nobody watching the news could have failed to have noticed that the people of Iceland are on tenterhooks, wondering if the Fagradalsfjall Volcano will erupt and rain hell on the town of Grindavik, whose 4,000 souls have been evacuated.

And, in the case of NYRST’s upcoming album “Völd” this does, indeed, seem to signify that there is a lot of truth to the saying “life imitating art”, because the band drew their inspiration from the ever-present danger of the countries’ volcanoes.

Even the title itself, “Völd”, which means “force, power or might”,  implies the sense of violence and foreboding that pervades the album, and which is reflected in the dark melodies and intense vocals of NYRST’s lineup of Snæbjörn on vocals,  Eysteinn and Davíð on guitars, Egill on bass, and Sveinbjörn on drums.

With the release date of “Völd” fast approaching, Dark Essence Records have today released a second track from the album, a track whose title ” Hrímvíti” only serves to emphasise the brooding menace of the volcanoes against whose power humanity is helpless.

” Hrímvíti” can be streamed or downloaded from a number of service at https://link.darkessencerecords.no/Nyrst_Hrimviti

Right from the outset NYRST demonstrated a ferocious musical ability that was remarkable in a band so early in their career.  Not content on resting on the laurels they earned upon the release of the debut full-length “Orsök” in 2020, NYRST are fully committed to expanding and evolving the creation of  the coldest, most eerie, and barren of soundscapes possible, as the band explains:

This release marks a big milestone in our career as a band. We’ve developed a lot as musicians since the release of “Orsök” and we took a very different approach to writing and composition. Our intention was to bring all the best elements of our previous work and implement new ideas along with a different theme, which in turn resulted in a much heavier, grim but melodic album.

With album artwork by Nightjar Adam Burke, layout by Skaðvaldur, and photography by Þorsteinn Dagur Rafnsson, track listing for “Völd” is as follows:

  1. Völd
  2. Sundra skal sálu
  3. Hrímvíti
  4. Fjalli∂ andar
  5. Eilíft eldhaf
  6. Drottnari nafnlausra gu∂a
  7. Af fjarri ströndum

Set for release on the 8th December, “Völd” will be available  in CD, Digital and Lava Smash Vinyl formats as well as on Cassette, and can now be pre-ordered from:

Black Metallers NYRST are a band whose pride in their native Iceland  is obvious in all that they do.  The country’s wild landscape, dotted with immense, still-active volcanoes, permeates NYRST’s music, whose dark melodies and intense vocals create a feeling that nature itself is a force to be reckoned with, and against whose power humanity is helpless.

The very title of the band’s sophomore full-length album “Völd”, which means “force, power or might” carries with it a sense of menace, and is indicative of what to expect from NYRST’s second outing on Dark Essence Records. And  never more so than on the title track, which has been released as a digital single today, and which can be downloaded or streamed from a number of sources at:

https://link.darkessencerecords.no/Nyrst_Vold

Accompanying the single is a video for the track by Valhalla Artworks, which perfectly encapsulates what NYRST is all about, and can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/hs1_nvxRQ0U?si=Jy5LdW5iRGhgcvj5

Upon the release of the band’s debut full-length album “Orsök” in 2020, it was startlingly clear that NYRST’s lineup of Snæbjörn on vocals,  Eysteinn and Davíð on guitars, Egill on bass, and Sveinbjörn on drums, was possessed of a ferocious musical ability, unusual in a band at such an early stage in its career.

Intent on creating the coldest, most eerie, and barren of soundscapes possible, and regardless of the positive reviews garnered by their debut, NYRST did not sit still, but rather built on the experience gained in the writing and recording of “Orsök”  to progress the band’s sound still further, as “Völd” will reveal.

Set for release on the 8th December, “Völd” will be available  in CD, Digital and Lava Smash Vinyl formats as well as on Cassette, and can now be pre-ordered from:

When NYRST released their debut full-length album “Orsök” in 2020, the Icelandic Black Metallers demonstrated a ferocious musical ability that was unusual for a band so early in their career.  Filled with deliciously dark melodies and intense vocals, “Orsök” clearly signposted the path that the band was destined to follow in its musical endeavours.

And NYRST’s follow up album “Völd” builds on the band’s early promise, and the desire of its members – Snæbjörn on vocals,  Eysteinn and Davíð on guitars, Egill on bass, and Sveinbjörn on drums, to create the coldest, most eerie and barren of soundscapes possible.

As the band explains from their base in Reykjavik:

This release marks a big milestone in our career as a band. We’ve developed a lot as musicians since the release of “Orsök” and we took a very different approach to writing and composition. Our intention was to bring all the best elements of our previous work and implement new ideas along with a different theme, which in turn resulted in a much heavier, grim but melodic album.

Being based in Reykjavik has no doubt helped NYRST’s ambition to bear fruit, because  “Völd” was written and rehearsed within a few kilometres of an active, lava-spewing,  volcano, whose very presence has allowed the band to draw inspiration from a stark landscape whose beauty is underscored by a brooding, ever-present, danger.

“Völd”, which, roughly translated, means  “force, power or might”, is an unapologetic homage to Iceland’s immense volcanoes.  Its music conjures forth images of the unrelenting and unforgiving harshness of nature that has dominated every living being in this land.

With album artwork by Nightjar Adam Burke, layout by Skaðvaldur, and photography by Þorsteinn Dagur Rafnsson, track listing for “Völd” is as follows:

  1. Völd
  2. Sundra skal sálu
  3. Hrímvíti

Another new band that is packed to the brim with experienced musicians from the Norwegian music scene has found its way onto Is It Jazz? Records,  the Bergen-based offshoot of Karisma Records that is developing a reputation for nurturing some of the latest and best arrivals on the Jazz scene, as well as attracting some very  well-established artists.

The band in question is THE VERGE, a four-piece unit that started life whilst its members were studying at the Jazz Academy in Trondheim.

Comprised of  Emil Storløkken Åse (PHOENIX, EMIL STORLØKKEN ÅSE SOLO) on Guitars , Aksel Rønning (COSMIC SWING ORCHESTRA, AKSEL RØNNING TRIO) on Saxophone and Flute, Alf Høines (CARAMEL 11, LEON RØSTEN TRIO)on Electric Bass,  and Ingvald Vassbø (KANAAN, JUNO) on Drums, THE VERGE’s lineup is very definitely not short of creativity and enthusiasm.

Together they have  created an intense and energetic debut album that draws its inspiration from extreme improvisational rock and dreamy noise/dronescapes, and offers more than a nod in the direction of free form jazz.  It is an album that promises to be vibrant and multifaceted, one where the ability of the individual musicians to interact with one another is front and centre.

More information about the album, including release dates, will be revealed shortly, and in the meantime Ingvald expressed THE VERGE’s delight at joining Is It Jazz? Records.

Myself, Emil, Alf and Akse are really looking forward to releasing our debut album on Is It Jazz? Records. I´ve been a long time fan of Karisma Records and it´s an honour and a privilege to be on the same label as so many other great artists that we admire and draw inspiration from.

Following on from the completion  of their third full-length album “Electric Temple” Norway’s SUPERLYNX, whose sound is a distinctive combination of  doom, psychedelic and meditative atmospheres suffused with heaviness and droning rock,  found themselves at somewhat of a loose end , falling prey, as did many, to the effects of the Pandemic on the live scene.

This led to SUPERLYNX embarking on the recording of “Solstice”, which was to become a six-track EP that contains both original material and covers, and which will be released in Digital format on Dark Essence Records on the 8th December.  As  the band explains:

After recording our third album “Electric Temple” in the middle of the pandemic there were almost no gigs to play and a lot of free time. We were not ready for a break from music and not quite ready to embark on a new album just yet. So for the love of playing and for the love of music we booked a studio weekend mid winter 2020 and recorded four cover songs.

These songs are musical gems to us and have had an influence on our own musical life in one way or another. We then put them together with two original songs from the “Electric Temple” sessions for which there had been no room on the album

After making three deeply personal and emotionally heavy albums,  some time out of our own heads playing music was a fun and refreshing experience. It was also a boost before starting the writing process for  our fourth album, which is just about to happen.

A teaser video for the “Solstice” EP can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/T3aZuS4TQOE

With the exception of the track “Cosmic Wave”, which was mixed by Marc Urselli, all the songs on “Solstice” have been recorded, mixed, produced and mastered by Ole Teigen at Crowtown Recordings.

The artwork for “Solstice” is by Pia Isaksen, and the tracklisting is as follows:

1.Born Too Late (Saint Vitus cover)
2. Spread Your Love (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club cover)
3. Something in the Way (Nirvana Cover)
4. Nature Boy (Nat King Cole / Eden Ahbez cover)
5. Reorbit
6. Cosmic Wave

Formed in 2013 by drummer Ole Teigen and bassist/vocalist Pia Isaksen, it had always been SUPERLYNX’s intention to remain a duo, but a meeting with guitarist Daniel Bakken, coupled with his performance during rehearsals, changed all that.  It was clear that he belonged in the band and SUPERLYNX became a fully-fledged trio.

Dark Essence Records have announced that the 16th April has been set for the release of “Electric Temple”, the third full-length album from SUPERLYNX, the Norwegian trio known for its distinctive, genre-defying sound that combines  doom, psychedelic and meditative atmospheres with heaviness and droning rock.

As a taste of things to come, the label has today released both a single, and a video, of the title track. The single is available to download or stream on a number of services at:

https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/Superlynx_Electric-Temple

Whilst the video, by Joan Pope / Temple ov Saturn, can be seen below and at  https://youtu.be/zphXNF_dUyU

For SUPERLYNX’s lineup of Pia Isaksen on  Bass and Vocals,  Daniel Bakken on  Guitars and Ole Teigen on Drums, piano, keys and vocals, “Electric Temple” is both a continuation on from  their previous album “New Moon” and a further development of moods not previously explored by the band.  Poignantly, “Electric Temple” also bears a deeply felt  mark left by the tragic death of a close family member.

According to the band, the title of the album is a reference to Jimi Hendrix´ way of looking at music. As they explain:

Our music and lyrics are as always very personal to us and refer to what we go through.  Life, music, nature and inspiration is a general focus.  We always want to push ourselves and explore deeper, wider and further and we feel this album shows our effort in that respect.

As Hendrix said “We call our music ‘electric church music’. Because it’s like a religion to us.” And that is much like how we feel about ours. In music we find so much of what people seek in temples, religions or other spiritual forms – strength to endure trials, peace of mind, ecstasy, safety, hope, community, joy, transcendence etc. In the process of writing our third album this truth only become clearer to us. Music is our temple.

As to the actual technical aspects of the album SUPERLYNX  went to describe how fortunate they were that producer Marc Urselli got in touch with the band wanting to work on the album with them:

He happens to be a multiple Grammy Award winning producer who has done sound for Nick Cave, Mike Patton, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, The Black Crowes and countless more.  He also has a project with Lee Ranaldo & Jim Jarmusch, has played in a trio with Stephen O´Malley and has a project with people like Steve von Till, Matt Pike, Lori S, Dave Chandler and more.

But these credits were not what was important to us though.  It was rather the fact that his sound was so in line with what we ourselves hoped to get out of this. Marc ended up mixing the album and we are really happy about how he has enhanced our sound.

The same goes for Fridtjof Lindeman of Strype Audio, who mastered “Electric Temple” as he did for our previous two albums.  He is always a pleasure to work with and does excellent work every time.

Recorded and produced by Ole Teigen in his studio Crowtown Recordings, and with album artwork by Pia Isaksen and band photo by Carl Eek, track listing for “Electric Temple” is as follows:

1. Rising Flame
2. Electric Temple
3. Apocalypse
4. Moonbather
5. Sonic Sacrament
6. Returning Light
7. Laws of Nature
8. Then you Move
9. Siren Sing
10. May

With “Through Aureate Void” set to be released on the 25th February, Dark Essence Records have today released  the single ” Leaf in the Current”, from what will be FIVE THE HIEROPHANT’s second full-length album.

” Leaf in the Current” is the opening track from the album and this is what FIVE THE HIEROPHANT had to say about it:

‘Leaf in the current’ is the first piece we ever did for the new album. It has been well over a year since we started the recording, a process that was supposed to be like a quick exciting bang and ended up in being  like this draining everlasting orgy without hope for culmination on the horizon. If you excuse the metaphor. So from the perspective of this time,  I believe that this track is the most representative of Five The Hierophant version 2020 and should give you a good clue as to what is about to unfold.

It  can be streamed or downloaded from various locations at https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/5th_leafinthecurrent

FIVE THE HIEROPHANT’s  lineup comprises Chris on drums, Dan on percussion instruments (toms, bongos, djembe, zither, tabla, triangle guirro, shakers, death whistle, cymbals), Mitch – bass guitar effects, omichord, noisebox, analogue synthesizer, Jon on saxophone, music saw, bells, Kali on guitar, field recordings, violin, zither, bow guitar, dungchen. And much more besides!

With their use of such a plethora of unusual instruments FIVE THE HIEROPHANT are able to create a sound where psychedelic black metal combines with jazz and doom, leading the listener into drone-like universe shrouded in mysticism and mystery.

And, with their latest offering, the band has followed an even more psychedelic direction, whilst keeping intact the heaviness and darkness that make FIVE THE HIEROPHANT’s music so devastating, as the band recently explained:

It took us longer than anticipated, as you can imagine, due to circumstances that befall us all. Nonetheless, the new album is finished, and ready to take you on a journey through aureate void. It’s quite abstract, and there’s lots of experimentation, both in regard to the sound and instruments used, and to the song structures. A lot of it comes from improvisation and leaving things to chance. I suppose we have taken it further than our debut album.

FIVE THE HIEROPHANT have once again used the work of the legendary Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum for the album’s cover art, and track listing for “Through Aureate Void” is as follows:

1. Leaf in the Current
2. Fire from Frozen Cloud
3. Berceuse (for Magnetic Sleep)
4. Pale Flare over Marshes
5. The Hierophant (II)

“Through Aureate Void” will be available in CD, LP and Digital formats, and can now be pre-ordered from:

As well as releasing “Through Aureate Void” on the 26th February, Dark Essence Records will also be releasing for the very first time a vinyl version of the album’s  predecessor, 2017’s  “Over Phlegethon”.  Tracklisting is as follows:

Dark Essence Records have announced the details of “Through Aureate Void”, the second full-length album from Britain’s FIVE THE HIEROPHANT, a band that uses unusual instruments to create a dark and drone-like universe where psychedelic black metal combines with jazz and doom to devastating effect.

The follow up to 2017’s “Over Phlegethon”,  “Through Aureate Void” goes in an even more psychedelic direction, without losing any of the heaviness or darkness that imbued their debut album.

As the band explains:

It took us longer than anticipated, as you can imagine, due to circumstances that befall us all. Nonetheless, the new album is finished, and ready to take you on a journey through aureate void. It’s quite abstract, and there’s lots of experimentation, both in regard to the sound and instruments used, and to the song structures. A lot of it comes from improvisation and leaving things to chance. I suppose we have taken it further than our debut album.
