Madder Mortem New PR

Dark Essence Records are today making available one more track from “Marrow”, the upcoming opus from Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM ahead of it’s 21 September release.

The track, “Liberator”,  can be heard below and is available to purchase and stream at http://maddermortem.bandcamp.com/track/liberator as well as from all the usual streaming services

A
The band describes “Liberator” as being “Really a Madder roller coaster, a sense of urgency powering the soaring-then-plummeting changes of feeling and style, but with a meaty groove pushing it all forwards. It’s progressive in parts, but yet very melody-driven, and a perfect song for driving a little too fast.

“Lyrically, “Liberator” is a song about picking yourself up and going for what you want, no holds barred. It’s easy to lose yourself to the unending pressure to stay in line, but you need to shake off the grasping hands that would hold you back and fire on all cylinders. Life is short, and we all spend too much time on things that mean nothing to us. Don’t let the voices of “reason” get to you. Let the world end not with a whimper, but with a bang”.

“Marrow”,  the band’s seventh full-length album, finds MADDER MORTEM pursuing a heavier, doomier, but at the same time, catchier,  path.  It is a complex album, with Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s powerful vocals leading the way through eleven tracks that range freely over a variety of genres and soundscapes; from delicate ballads to powerful metal,  via folk/prog and a touch of the avant-garde.   It is this complexity, imbued as it is with all that is MADDER MORTEM, that makes “Marrow”  a very interesting prospect indeed.

According to the band, Marrow  is about “Sticking to the essence of yourself.  Your ideas, your thoughts, your values”,  and was produced by BP M. Kirkevaag, and mastered by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid.  With artwork by the legendary artist Thore Hansen, tracklisting for “Marrow” is as follows:

01. Untethered
02. Liberator
03. Moonlight Over Silver White
04. Until You Return
05. My Will Be Done
06. Far From Home
07. Marrow
08. White Snow, Red Shadows
09. Stumble On
10. Waiting To Fall
11. Tethered

Slegest PR 2018

“Introvert”, the upcoming third studio album from SLEGEST, sees the Norwegians well and truly solidifying that bone crunching mix of black metal and classic heavy rock that is their trademark sound.    Scheduled for release on Dark Essence Records on the 16th November, the label has today released the first single from the album.

The track,  “Undergangens Tankesmed”, can be heard below and is available to purchase from https://slegest.bandcamp.com/track/undergangens-tankesmed

As well as from a selection of digital platforms at https://darkessencerecords.lnk.to/Slegest_UndergangensTankesmed

A
Filled with tasty riffs, hooks that pull you in, and a vicious catchiness, the 80’s feel  makes itself subtly felt on the new album.  As for the first single, Slegest’s  frontman and main composer Ese comments:

“Undergangens Tankesmed” is about the fact that all you wish for, and your true inner dreams, eventually lead you down a path to your own destruction. So you might as well just follow your heart and enjoy the adrenaline-pumping ride downwards!”

Bass and vocals for “Introvert”  were recorded in Systrond and engineered by Ese.  Drums and guitars were recorded at the  Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen with  Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen engineering the drums,  whilst the guitars were engineered by Herbrand Larsen, who also mixed the album.  Iver Sandøy handled the mastering.

With cover artwork by Anders Røkkum, “Introvert” will be available in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats.

Tracklisting is as follows:

1 Blodets Varme Gjennom Meg
2 Undergangens Tankesmed
3 Maler Lys I Mørketid
4 Da Brenne I Glåsi
5 I Den Sanne Flamme
6 Dødskyss
7 Leitar
8 Den Onde Sirkel

Oak PR1

Adding yet another string to their already impressive Progressive bow, Karisma Records have inked a deal with OAK,  and will release the band’s sophomore full-length album “False Memory Archive” on the 19th October.

In anticipation of the release, Karisma have debuted  the first track from the album “We, the Drowned” which can be heard below and at http://oakinoslo.bandcamp.com/album/false-memory-archive

A
Starting life as a folk-rock duo, OAK’s current lineup of Simen Valldal Johannessen on vocals, piano, keys and lyrics, Sigbjørn Reiakvam on bass, acoustic / electric guitars, banjo, keys and programming, and Øystein Sootholtet on Drums, percussion, programming and keys, come from a diverse background that spans classical piano to electronica, prog- and hard-rock, and includes references to the alternative scene as well as progressive rock.   The pulling together of all these different elements and skills helped create the rather unique OAK sound, and resulted in the 2013 release of the band’s debut album “Lighthouse”.

Oak PR2

It’s now five years later, and OAK are back with “False Memory Archive”, which, with its nods in the direction of “Lighthouse”, make it a natural continuation of their debut. Meticulously crafted, with an increased use of electronics and low bass frequencies, “False Memory Archive” is both darker and groovier that its predecessor, whilst still maintaining that familiar Oak sound, which is neither wholly progressive pop, nor progressive rock, but a happy amalgam of both.

Having  taken several steps both as songwriters and musicians, OAK have succeeded in producing a sophomore album that  ended up in a slightly darker and more progressive territory, but one in which the light still shines through in the shape of catchy elements and stunning vocal harmonies, which create that unique duality that defines them as a band.

Recorded in Oslo at the Ljugekroken Studio and the Tøyen Church, “False Memory Archive” was  mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren and Oak at the Fascination Studios.  With front cover artwork by  Lisa Love and design by Deformat, and featuring a guest appearance on guitars by Bjorn Riis, tracklisting for “False Memory Archive” is as follows:

  1. We, The Drowned
  2. Claire De Lune
  3. False Memory Archuve
  4. Lost Causes (Bjorn Riis guesting on guitar)
  5. Intermezzo
  6. The Lights
  7. These Are The Stars We’re Aiming For
  8. Transparent Eyes
  9. Psalm 51

Madder Mortem VideoPR

With their seventh full-length album “Marrow” set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 21 September, Norwegian Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM have released a new video for a track from the album.

Titled “Far From Home” the symbol-laden video is by the noted Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu  and can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/8DIDksyQJUk

A
About “Far From Home”, the band commented  that the track “grew out of an early morning’s vocals idea, and into a very Madder song. Everything we love is here: contrasts and melody, fragility and heaviness, anguish and hope. The lyrics are about a long night’s uneasy journey into day, about the gut-wrenching worry that rides on the back of truly caring for someone”.

Regarding the video itself, and the collaboration with Chioreanu, who has a long-standing history with Dark Essence Records and the Norwegian music scene, Madder Mortem went on to say:

“When we approached artist Costin Chioreanu about creating the video for “Far From Home”, we gave him the music, the lyrics, and otherwise an absolutely free rein. The result is his unique interpretation of the song and the feeling, and when we first saw it, we were all tearing up. Costin gave the song another dimension, and we are so grateful to him for expanding our music into the visual realm”.

Madder Mortem New PR

As an album, the eleven-track “Marrow” is complex, covering a wide variety of genres and sounds that range from moments of folk/prog to avant-garde.  From delicate ballads to harsh metal, it  is more doomy  than its predecessor “Red in Tooth and Claw”, as well as being at times both heavier, and catchier.  It is, according to the band “about sticking to the essence of yourself.  Your ideas, your thoughts, your values”.

“Marrow” comes in CD Digipak, Digital and Limited Edition transparent green vinyl and is available from all the usual sellers, or can be ordered from the following:

Madder Mortem New PR

Norwegian Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM have today not only announced the details of their upcoming seventh full-length album “Marrow”, they have also revealed a track from the album.

Titled “Moonlight Over Silver White” the track is, according to the band, “the essence of what Madder Mortem is about. The contrasts between the gentle and the brutal, the chugging grooviness of the guitars in counterpoint to the soaring arpeggios of the vocals, and the wide range of musical influences knit together in a damn strong, heavy song. The lyrics are a tale of the loneliness of a forest in winter, walking lost and small between the downy snow and the glaring stars”.

“Moonlight Over Silver White” is also available as a single, it can be heard below and is available from http://phonofile.link/moonlight-over-silver-white

“Marrow” sees MADDER MORTEM hungrier and heavier than ever before.  The eleven-track album is complex, covering a wide variety of genres and sounds that range from moments of folk/prog to avant-garde.  From delicate ballads to harsh metal. Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s dynamic and immensely powerful vocals, are, as always, at the fore on an album that is more doomy  than its predecessor “Red in Tooth and Claw”, as well as being at times both heavier, and catchier.

Set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 21st September, “Marrow” is about “Sticking to the essence of yourself.  Your ideas, your thoughts, your values”.  It was produced by BP M. Kirkevaag and mastered by Peter In de Betou at Tailor Maid.

With artwork by the legendary artist Thore Hansen, “Marrow” will be available in Digipak CD, Digital, and Limited Edition Green Vinyl Gatefold LP formats.

Tracklisting for “Marrow” is as follows:

06. Far From Home

MADDER MORTEM also have some news that will please fans who have been clamouring to get their hands on the band’s long-unavailable debut full-length album “Mercury”.

With 2019 being the 20th Anniversary of the release of the album,  the band are planning a special re-release of “Mercury” in which the original songs will be re-worked to reflect the MADDER MORTEM of today.

As the band explains:

“Back when we recorded “Mercury”, we were basically just kids, and we knew very little about how the recording process worked. The musicianship was mostly there, and the ideas were absolutely there, but as for production skills … we just liked reverb a lot! Thankfully, we ended up with a result we’re still proud of. But through the years, as we’ve played the songs with different line-ups, we’ve often talked about how cool it would be to bring the skills and know-how we now have to those ideas. BP has even made some quite elaborate pre-prods of several songs, but the timing has never been right for making a release out of it”.

The right time has finally arrived, but in order to be able to bring this much-cherished project, which will include not just the album, but also a very special show, to fruition, MADDER MORTEM really need the help of the metal community, and to this end the band has set up a Crowdfunding page, where fans can become an integral part of the process and reap some very unusual and very unique rewards. To get creative input and feedback from their fans, and to promote the new album, they’re also going out on their first headliner tour this fall.

Krakow NewPR

With their new album “minus” set for release on Karisma Records on the 31 August, Norway’s KRAKOW have debuted a video for the  track “black wandering sun”  from the album.

With this song, and video animated by Esteban Sebastián Farias, KRAKOW pay  tribute to their influences, a concept enhanced by the guest appearance of Phil Campbell of Motörhead fame. The band explains:

“black wandering sun is an homage to our heroes who passed during the last couple of years, pulling inspiration from their universe, tipping the hat to their words and visiting them as the stars they are. And to top it off we were helped out by Phil who did the most rock n’ roll solo to provide the glitz and stardom the song needed to reach the summit of heaviness. The video is a reflection of the story the song tells, yet it becomes its own story, like a parallel trail through the universe, much like everything else that’s going on with this album. Godspeed, you Starman!”

The video, is streaming exclusively via various media outlets, and can be accessed HERE

Or directly at the following:

Metal Hammer, UK
No Clean Singing, USA
La Grosse Radio, FR
Metalhead,IT
Slam magazine, DE
Lords of Metal, NL
Bergenfest, NO
Metalfan,RO
Imperiumi, FI
Ultraje,PT
Kvlt,PL

Whilst the video gives fans a taste of what to expect from “minus”, KRAKOW explain more about their latest endeavours:

“Following the laborious process of distilling two albums worth of material into one focused gem, we give you “minus”. The pinnacle achievement of KRAKOW’s thirteen-year existence. After a year of recording, shaping, re-recording and refining, “minus” has been reduced to the bare essence of who KRAKOW are as individuals, as a group and as story tellers.  It is an album that defies any attempts at genre definition and covers the heavy, the subtle, the melodic, the atonal, the groovy, the sluggish, the dense, the airy, the naked, and always, always, that wall of sound where no light can escape.

“With themes spanning from outer space to the hidden worlds deep below, travelling in time from the distant future to the near past like an inverted space odyssey, we are taken on a journey where “we all become stories”, in ways as much a reflection of the ones we tell, as a revelation of the ones we won’t.

“minus” was once again recorded in the renowned Duper and Solslottet studios in the Bergen Kjøtt creative complex, in collaboration, once more, with Iver Sandøy.  KRAKOW even brought in some help this time, to tell these stories, the album ending with a choir consisting of a select group of Bergen based musical veterans, whilst the opening track introduces the most rock n’ roll guitar solo, courtesy of one Phil Campbell of Motörhead fame.

“So, this is “minus”.  An album that defies any attempt at genre definition. There are guests, who bring glitz and rock n’ roll, as well as a grounding force to the core of the mountain. There is beauty, and there is rotten decay, like a lush forested island in the centre of a lake of septic water. There are monsters and there are saints, and none of them reveal themselves. But if we allow ourselves to search, we will find the cracks in the fabric and find a way to get close.

“It’s a collection of contradictions, is what we’re saying. It’s a KRAKOW album”.

Fans can also expect more visual representations for those willing to delve even deeper into the songs themselves, with several music videos lined up, telling the stories from slightly different angles, or even from completely flipped viewpoints, allowing the band to elaborate without giving everything away.

With artwork by renowned tattoo artist and long-time KRAKOW collaborator Thomas Hooper, tracklisting for “minus” is as follows:

Krakow minus artworkPR

1: black wandering sun
2: sirens
3: the stranger
4: from fire, from stone

Aeternus PR2018

Veteran Norwegian Dark Metallers AETERNUS have completed work on what will be the band’s eighth full-length album.  Titled “Heathen”,  the seven-track album was recorded at Bergen’s Conclave & Earshot studios and  produced by Herbrand Larsen, and  is set for release on Dark Essence Records later this year.

One of the pioneers of the “Dark Metal” genre, AETERNUS was formed in 1993 by guitarist and frontman Ares.  The band’s sound is one that combines features from both Black Metal and Death Metal, interspersed with haunting, melodic interludes, all topped off with skilled musicianship. Commenting on what fans can expect from “Heathen”, an album which will also mark AETERNUS’ 25th Anniversary, the band had this to say:

” We feel we’ve produced seven great songs for “Heathen”, all with AETERNUS’ trademark sound, which is a mix of complex extreme music along with heavy riffs and of course some great melodic features.  You could say that we are more than satisfied with the results”.

Aside from Ares, AETERNUS’ lineup is composed of Phobos (GRAVDAL) on drums and KRAKOW’s Eld on bass, and sharp-eyed fans will notice that guitarist Specter is missing.   As the band explains:

“Before having fully completed the composition part of “Heathen”,  Specter felt that he had little more to  offer the band, and that his long search for music was not only taking up too much of his own time, but it was also slowing down AETERNUS’ progress,  and as a result, he decided that it was best for all concerned that he quit the band.  He did however compose several terrific riffs which we  feel are outstanding, and they have been included in the album. We would like to thank Specter for all his work with AETERNUS, and wish him all the best  for the future.

“This of course means that once again AETERNUS has recorded an album where Ares’ considerable skills have been put to good use, and he has composed and played all the guitar leads on “Heathen”.  We’re sure that having read this, fans are wondering what is going to happen as far as live performances go.  No problem there! We have hired Gorm, from the Norse metal band THYRUZ, to play live with us, and he has been busy rehearsing our material. He will be more than ready when AETERNUS hits the stage again”.

COR SCORPII was Founded in 2004 as an offshoot of the legendary WINDIR.  Today’s  lineup of Gaute Refsnes on keyboards, Inge Jonny Lomheim on  bass guitars, accordion and programming, Ole M. Nordsve on drums, Rune Sjøthun on  rhythm guitars, mandolin and programming, and Thomas S. Øvstedal  on vocals,  and Erlend Nybø  on lead guitars draw their inspiration from classical music, folk melodies and the soundscapes of Nordic extreme metal.

A follow up to COR SCORPII’s critically acclaimed debut album “Monument”, which was released eight years ago, also on Dark Essence Records, “Ruin” is the result of a lengthy song writing process which proved, at times, to be quite  arduous for the band,  and gives its members an opportunity to reveal their  hidden talents by making use of instruments not usually used by metal bands, such as the accordion and mandolin.

Successfully blending epic, soaring melodies, with the harshness of extreme metal, “Ruin was recorded at various locations over a period of three years and was mixed by Børge Finstad in his Toproom Studio, and mastered by Tom Kvålsvoll at his Kvalsonic Lab.

With artwork by Novans V. Adikresna of the Marnov Studio,  and including featured guests such as the classical singer Annika Beinnes, as well as Mats Lerberg (I SWEAR DAMNATION, ex-FUNERAL) who lend their considerable vocal talents to three tracks each, tracklisting on “Ruin” is as follows:

  1. Svart Blod (Hovmod star for fall)
  2. Hjarteorm
  3. Skuggevandrar
  4. Fotefar
  5. Helveteskap
  6. Ri di Mare
  7. Ærelaus
  8. Siste Dans

Avast Logo PR

Dark Essence Records has inked a deal with Blackgazers AVAST, which will see the label release the band’s debut full-length album in the Autumn.

Hailing from Stavanger, in Norway, AVAST is a band that reviewers and promoters place in a variety of genres, with Blackgaze and Post-Black Metal at the forefront.  But it could equally be said that the band’s roots lie in Punk Rock and Hardcore, given that AVAST’s lyrics are not centred around the usual Black Metal themes, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on Social and Environmental issues.

Whichever genre you’d like to put them in, there is, however, absolutely no doubt that AVAST’s lineup of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals Trond Salte (AGENDA) on guitars  and  Ørjan Lund (NAG) on drums,  skilfully fuses the aesthetics of Black Metal with the atmospherics of Post-Rock to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing.

Avast PR

Having previoiusly released a two-track EP in 2016, AVAST have spent the past year in the recording studios working on their new album “Mother Culture”, a concept album that examines the myths upon which modern civilization is based.  It is a work that addresses the potential for a global catastrophe, and is based on the philosophical novel “Ishmael” by Daniel Quinn.
