Arabs in Aspic PR2

With the 12th June having been set as the release date for “Madness and Magic”,  the seventh full-length album from Prog Rockers ARABS IN ASPIC, Karisma Records have today released the single “I Vow to Thee, My Screen”, which is the opening track from the album.

According to the band, the song ” describes the fascination and fear of our addiction to being entertained. The lyrics are heavily inspired by the British patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, my Country,” written by Cecil Spring-Rice in 1918″.

“I Vow to Thee, My Screen” can be streamed or downloaded from a number of different services at  https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/arabsinaspic

Based in Trondheim in Norway, ARABS IN ASPIC’s lineup of Jostein Smeby on Guitars + vocals, Stig Jørgensen on Organs + vocals, Erik Paulsen on Bass + vocals, Eskil Nyhus on Drums + cymbals and Alessandro G. Elide on Percussion + gongs,  all have an uncanny ability to perform a variety of styles, which include aspects of classic rock, funk, pop, prog, heavy rock, bossanova, a capella.

The resultant sound is a distinctive mix of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70’s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies, which point to ARABS IN ASPIC’s roots in what is known as the “Golden Era” of rock.

With ethereal artwork by Julia Proszowska, tracklisting for the “Madness and Magic” is as follows:

  1. I Vow to Thee, My Screen
  2. Lullaby for Modern Kids, Part 1
  3. Lullaby for Modern Kids, Part 2
  4. High-Tech Parent
  5. Madness and Magic
  6. Heaven in Your Eye

Commenting on “Madness and Magic”, the band had this to say:

“Madness and Magic”  is the first Arabs in Aspic album written for two drummers, with more acoustic guitar parts than previous albums. All the music was written and arranged in our studio and carefully put together like a puzzle with 50,000 pieces, to take the listener on a journey through life’s “Madness and Magic”, both musically and lyrically.

The lyrics for “Madness and Magic” reflect on how easily both children and adults are affected in the digital age, but also how helpless we are when we have to put our lives in the hands of specialists. Many ideas came up after a brief meeting with Doctor Death. The message of “Madness and Magic” is up to the listener to decide. For you are capable of thinking for yourself, right?

“Madness and Magic” will be available in CD,  black vinyl and Limited Edition Green and Yellow Splatter vinyl, and Digital formats, and is now available to pre-order at:

Airbag 2020 PR4

Four years since the release of “Disconnected”,  Prog Rockers AIRBAG are set to release their fifth full-length album.  Titled “A Day at the Beach”, the album will be released on the 19th June on Karisma Records, and today the label has given the band’s many fans a taste of what they can look forward to by releasing a track from the album.

The track is titled “Machines and Men”, and  AIRBAG describe it thus:  “This was one of the very first songs written for the album. The initial demo was basically just guitars, drums and vocals and during a period of working in the studio, rehearsing,  and playing the song live, it slowly evolved into something new and fresh that defined most of the material we were working on. The lyrics describe the facts of war in a cold and objective fashion, only to turn to the spectator  with a warning and a chance to look away“.

“Machines and Men” can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/airbag_machines-and-men

Hailed as one of the most important bands to emerge from the Norwegian prog scene over the past decades, AIRBAG  was formed in the mid 2000’s by five high school class mates, which included two of today’s members Asle Tostrup (vocals) and Bjørn Riis (guitars).  AIRBAG is a band that is able to blend diverse musical styles and sounds, with a strong narrative listening experience. Today’s lineup also includes Henrik Bergan Fossum (drums) and “A Day at the Beach” will be AIRBAG’s first album as a trio, and will also feature talented guest musicians including WOBBLER’s Kristian Hultgren.

Featuring  six new songs recorded during the  autumn and winter of 2019-20, and inspired  by the resurgence of 1980s electronica, new wave and movie scores, “A Day at the Beach” sees AIRBAG  creating a powerful sound combining ethereal soundscapes with their signature guitar driven progressive rock.  The result is a stunning selection of songs revealing a mature band looking forward from its already impressive legacy.

Once again teaming up with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes, “A Day at the Beach” was mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo and  produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis. Cover design, is, as always, by vocalist Tostrup.   Track listing for “A Day at the Beach” is as follows:

1. Machines and Men
2. A Day at the Beach (Part 1)
3. Into the Unknown
4. Sunsets
5. A Day at the Beach (Part 2)
6. Megalomaniac

Airbag A day at the beach Albumart PR

Airbag explains:

The album is the result of a strong collaboration between all three of us. Having lost two original members since our last album, we were forced to rethink how we write and create new music, but it also allowed us to venture into something new that turned out to be very inspiring.

Lyrically, “A Day at the Beach” is very much a story of us and them, told by a husband, father and brother leaving his family behind into an unknown future. It’s the contrast between the desperate individual struggling to survive and people in power observing at a safe distance.

Acarash PR 2020

“A vessel for justice, strength and revenge” is how Occult Hard Rockers ACÂRASH describe their sophomore full-length album “Descend to Purity”, and it’s a clear indication of what fans can expect from the Norwegians, who have mastered the art of forging a sound that blends Hard Rock and Metal together with Black Metal.

Set for release on the 29th May,  Dark Essence Records have released a single from the album.  Titled “Satanic Obsession”, it can be streamed or downloaded at the following: https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/satanicobsession

A lyric video of “Satanic Obsession” can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/5kNgZLvY2W8

A
Formed in Oslo in the fall of 2016, and founded on the pillars of the 80s and 90s avant-garde rockers THE VOID, ACÂRASH is a band which, whilst embracing tradition, nevertheless manages to forge a sound all of its own. A  sound in which esoteric poetry and ritualistic contemplation are central to the music, and whose nuances are mirrored in both sound and musical contrasts.

With “Descend to Purity, Acârash’s lineup of of Sølve Sæther on drums, Lukas Paulsen on guitars and Anlov P. Mathiesen on bass and vocals, have managed  to both reinvent and  preserve, and in doing so have delivered a record that explores and develops the boundaries of rock and metal, and alternates between raw catchiness, dark introspection, and progressive doom, with consummate ease.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Ruben Willem at the Caliban Studios in Oslo, track listing for  “Descend to Purity” is as follows:

  1. Descend to Purity
  2. Satanic Obsession
  3. Desecrate. Liberate.
  4. Goat, Skull, Ritual Fire
  5. Below Ceremonial
  6. Three Knives
  7. Steel Hunter
  8. Red Stone Betrayal

Commenting on the album, ACÂRASH had this to say:

This album is a potent cocktail of visionary blackened doom and primitive heavy metal. Emerging from dark spiritual clarity and hard work, the music conquers and transforms.

Transformation through suffering. Conquest through purity.

Costin Chioreanu VR PR4

When this year’s Inferno Festival was cancelled due to the current Corona virus crisis also cancelled was the much-anticipated guided Virtual Reality tour “Midnight Cemetery” that was going to be brought to you by Costin Chioreanu and Adrian Tabacaru. The exhibition would have encompassed the entire story of the album “Afterlife Romance” by Chioreanu and Sofia Sarri, and would have allowed fans to enter the world of Costin Chioreanu’s art, enabling them to walk amongst, and through, elements of his artwork, and to interact with them at some levels.

Having seen how the cancellation of all live shows and forced isolation has affected the morale of music fans everywhere, Dark Essence Records and Fruits of Venus Productions have joined forces to give fans something to look forward to by offering the “Midnight Cemetery” experience to everyone as a free-to-download Virtual Reality Tour.

Produced by Adrian Tabacaru and Costin Chioreanu “Midnight Cemetery” can be explored using a dedicated VR-Headset, or as a standalone PC Game.  As Dark Essence explains:

In these dark times for humanity, Fruits of Venus Productions and Dark Essence Records are starting a campaign to spread a combination of art, music and technology, using some alternative tools and a new type of approach in what will be a first in the history of metal music.

After the “Midnight Cemetery” exhibition, which was supposed to have its premiere at Inferno Festival 2020, was cancelled due to the current pandemic, Costin Chioreanu and Adrian Tabacaru, the creators of this amazing virtual experience, realised that this project was suitable for spreading all over the world, and, that by doing so, they could offer moments of magic to people in lock-down in their homes. Having released “Afterlife Romance” in 2019 and hearing Costin’s ideas, we were also enthusiastic about this endeavour.

Fruits of Venus Commented:

You will hopefully find that the “Midnight Cemetery” virtual tour is a new way to experience art in the current digital domain. A premiere for the music industry, it gives a new dimension to a recording, by giving life not just to the music, but also to all the illustrations created for booklets, in one fascinating virtual experience.

Instead of being stuck in Oslo, and available only to those attending Inferno 2020 “Midnight Cemetery” will now be available world-wide and everyone will be able to experience it via a free download App. The world-wide premiere is set for March 31st, 2020 and on that day we will publish the download link so you can enjoy it, and spread it to your friends and beyond.

Whilst waiting for its impending release, you can check out the very first images from this experience and see a little insight into the creation of the project below and at https://youtu.be/aIeOVX66xx4

Icelandic Black Metallers NYRST have released a second track from their upcoming album “Orsök”, an album filled with incredibly cold, stark, and barren soundscapes, whose lyrics come straight from old horror literature, laced with cosmic undertones.

The track, ” Nástirni”, can be streamed or downloaded from https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/Nastirni

It can also be heard below and on YouTube at https://youtu.be/TLFHMrp8aZc

Formed in the winter of 2013 and drawing their inspiration from their grim and icy Icelandic heritage,  NYRST’s lineup consists of Snæbjörn on vocals,  Eysteinn and Davíð on guitars, Egill on bass, and Sveinbjörn on drums.  NYRST’s first demo, released in 2018, garnered considerable praise for the band’s use of diverse vocals and chilling atmosphere.  Interpreting  their studio sound for  the stage, the band are able to deliver mystic and haunting live performances which have gained them respect in the metal scene of their native Iceland.

Recently commenting on the video, the band had this to say:

NYRST are proud to premiere the music video for “Orsök”, our first single and the title track from our upcoming album. We had a very specific vision in mind to convey the harsh and barren landscape of our country, which was our main inspiration when we wrote the album. There is something about the desolate wastes of the highland that gives you a sense of hopelessness, but also this immense calm, a perfect symbiotic relationship that made us find a very accurate atmosphere and sound which made all this possible.

The lyrics of Orsök tell of a lone wanderer and his journey across the frozen wasteland,  where he is forced by the Gods to sacrifice his young daughter to host a Goddess or a cosmic entity, thereby bringing doom upon life. Departing with the baby, absolute loneliness and grief become his companions, following him to the end of his journey.

In his final moments, conceding to the spirits,  he realizes his mistake and embraces the void.

Shaman Elephant PR2020

When you consider that SHAMAN ELEPHANT’s debut album “Crystals” caused Prog fans to sit up and take notice when it hit the streets in 2016, it looks very much like those fans will have much more to look forward to from the Psychedelic  Prog Rockers with the upcoming release of their sophomore full-length “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”,  because, as the band says:

With this album we feel like we have found out who we want to be as a band. Whilst the first album was going in all directions, this album feels more focused and mature. “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is our attempt at making the melodies move like butterflies while the grooves sting like killer bees.

Set for release on Karisma Records on the 29th May, SHAMAN ELEPHANT have today released a single from “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”.  The track, “Magnets” can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Magnets

A
SHAMAN ELEPHANT had this to say about the track:

“Magnets” is our attempt at making a prog rock song that is approachable for a wider audience than some of our previous releases – while at the same time staying true to what we love; intricate melodies, harmonies and locomotive riffs and rhythms.

SHAMAN ELEPHANT has always been a band that is able to demonstrate an uncanny skill in the art of blending 60s and 70s psychedelia with progressive rock, sounding as impressive in the studio, as they do live on stage – as fans who have witnessed their shows in Norway and Europe are able to attest.  And, with “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”,  the lineup of Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen on vocals and guitar, Jard Hole on drums, Ole-Andreas Sæbø Jensen on  bass, and Jonas Særsten on keyboards, shows just how much the band has matured in terms of song writing and  musicianship, without losing any of that SHAMAN ELEPHANT charm.

Produced by ENSLAVED’s  Iver Sandøy  at the Solslottet Studio, and with cover design by Maja Markegård and photography by Tom Wøbbekind, “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” will be available in CD, LP (both Black and Transparent Orange vinyl versions) and Digital formats.  Track listing is as follows:

  1. Wide Awake but Still Asleep

Vrangsinn PR1

After putting his own projects on a hiatus that has lasted almost a decade while he concentrated on the recording and production side of music, CARPATHIAN FOREST’s larger than life bassist DANIEL VRANGSINN is back with a brand new band  VRANGSINN AND THE ARSONISTS  .

Indeed, it was while mixing the upcoming album from Black Metallers KIRKEBRANN, and realising what a group of talented musicians he was working with, that the idea was born for VRANGSINN AND THE ARSONISTS as he explains:

For the first time in a long, long time, I felt the kind of enthusiasm needed to start afresh, and what better way to do it than with a group of immensely talented musicians with an impressive skill-set. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with them, both in the studio and live, and I’m looking forward to creating something new.

The lineup of KIRKEBRANN, which is composed of guitarists Draug (SKAMMENS SØNNER) and Hrafn (SVIKT, SKAMMENS SØNNER), Januz  (SVIDD, EX-SVIKT, GALSKAPT) on bass, and  Nødset (FRAMFERD, CONCRETE, FRAIL GROUNDS, REPULSIVE AGGRESSION) on session drums, is perfect to work with.  I have the deepest respect for them. They are truly skilled at their craft and have so much brilliant material coming out. Some of the best black metal I have heard in years!

Let’s just say that the future will be quite interesting, with music that will be different from what people would expect of me, and which, rather than sticking to any one particular genre, will be quite varied, and I will be looking for a label for the album.

VRANGSINN AND THE ARSONISTS are set to hit the ground running on the 3rd of April when the band headlines Friday’s Skien Metalfest show at  Megafon in Skien, Norway.  Tickets will be on sale at the door, and more information about the event can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/461213851391497/

Vrangsinn Live PR

Long-time fans of VRANGSINN’s various projects may have noticed that the website disappeared a few years ago, as did the presence of the  multiple releases on platforms such as Spotify, whilst the massive multi-media project “Taboo”, which was scheduled to be released in 2012, never appeared.  Musing on whether it will ever see the light of day, VRANGSINN had this to say:

Most of the footage for “Taboo” was filmed in 2010 and some of it is quite outdated by 2020 standards.  I simply do not think the majority of the existing footage represents who I am today or where I want to go from here.  I will however still use much of the amazing material I received from friends far away. Most of that is still relevant, even timeless. So I do plan to put together a couple of really cool music videos with material from “TABOO” eventually.

The album itself may or may not be released, I have not made up my mind about that. The material is actually good. I am extremely happy with it and the music definitely still stands up a  decade later. But! Here and now I would rather focus on writing new material together with my new crew of Arsonists.  That album has been on ice for 10 years and can remain on ice for a while longer.

Nyrst PR3

It is fitting that Black Metallers NYRST have chosen the title track to introduce their  debut full-length album “Orsök”, because it is a track whose sound illustrates to perfection an album that is filled with incredibly cold, stark, and barren soundscapes, and whose lyrics come straight from old horror literature and are laced with cosmic undertones.

The band’s grim and icy Icelandic heritage, is where NYRST draws its inspiration, and the band’s new video for the track “Orsök”, illustrates this to perfection.  The video, by Daníel Puskás of Valhallartworks can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/m4oZcDqB1i8

Commenting on the video, the band had this to say:

NYRST’s next live appearance will be on Saturday 29th February at the by:Larm Festival, in Oslo, Norway, followed by the 14th March at the Hard Rock Cafe in Reykjavik, and the 18th April at Gaukurinn, also in Reykjavik.

Arabs in Aspic PR2

“We play music” is how ARABS IN ASAPIC somewhat modestly describe themselves on their Facebook page. But delve deeper and you will find that the music produced by the lineup of Jostein Smeby on Guitars + vocals, Stig Jørgensen on Organs + vocals, Erik Paulsen on Bass + vocals, Eskil Nyhus on Drums + cymbals and Alessandro G. Elide on Percussion + gongs,  includes aspects of classic rock, funk, pop, prog, heavy rock, bossanova, a capella.

Intrigued?   Karisma Records certainly were, because the Norwegian label is set to release the band’s seventh full-length album this spring.

Hailing from Trondheim, Norway, ARABS IN ASPIC have their roots firmly planted in the Golden Era of rock, as exemplified by their sound, which is a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70’s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies.

Commenting on their teaming up with Karisma Records, the band had this to say:

We are happy to announce that we have taken a step up and signed with Karisma Records for the release of our next album! Joining this team of dedicated and professional music lovers will enable us to focus solely on making and playing music — hopefully allowing us to do more live shows and releases in the future. We are proud to be included alongside bands like Ruphus, Wobbler, Jordsjø and Airbag, and look forward to presenting our music together with these great bands and the fantastic crew at Karisma.
