With the their seventh full-length album “Welcome the Dead” released at the end of last year, and earning plaudits from fans and critics alike, veteran Norwegian Black Metallers CREST OF DARKNESS have uploaded a new video for a track from the album to their YouTube channel.   The track chosen for this video is “My Black Bride” which makes this a particularly unusual choice for the band, not only because it is an instrumental, something the band has only recorded on two occasions over the years, but it is also a melodic, deeply atmospheric piece, totally different from the band’s usual Black/Death/Metal sound.   The reasons for creating such an “out of character” piece are quite fascinating, and are explained below by the band’s founder and frontman  Ingar Amlien (CONCPTION, ROQUEFIRE,  AMLIEN’s INFERNO).  The video itself can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/niPFDtJgpC4

x
According to Amlien “My Black Bride” was written for his wife Laila, who wore a black wedding dress when the couple married over ten years ago.    “I had wanted to write a special song for Laila for a long time.  She has supported me and my work for so many years, and without her I really don’t know where I would be today, and I  knew right from the start that if I was to create this piece it would have to be totally honest.  Something personal, and not the kind of rose-tinted love song that people tend to expect when you write a song dedicated to the love of your life.

“I tried to capture the feeling of romance and happiness, but at the same time I wanted to touch on something more “forbidden” – the dark side if you like to think of it like that.  Like most couples we have been through many experiences in the time we’ve shared together, both good and bad. But, unlike most couples, my work has always involved being “in touch” with both Life and Death, something  Laila has always been very aware of, so the difficult times take on a darker significance.

“I also knew that this song had to be an instrumental because words could not possibly express what I was trying to communicate with this song.  I played the guitars myself – I felt I had to as these few notes I’m playing are so extremely personal.   To the listener the song may sound like a simple, stripped down piece of music, which is what I intended it to be, but it comes from the depth of my heart ands contains many small details that someone outside of the relationship I have with my wife cannot understand.  It’s a heartbreaking piece, but as with all my music, there is something deeper behind it.  There is my belief that inside all of us there burns a black flame – that special will to survive”.

The video itself was created and edited by Francesco Palumbo at MKM Graphix, using images from the Cappuccin Catacombs in Palermo, Italy, and, given that “My Black Bride” is essentially a romantic piece, the choice of such macabre images might seem strange.  “When I first saw the video I almost choked” admitted Amlien.  “The images were right for CREST OF DARKNESS, but I was a little taken aback at first.  However, the more I looked at it, the more I realised that they were, in fact, perfect”.

“Welcome the Dead” was released on My Kingdom Music in both CD and Digital formats at the end of last year.  A double LP format, which will feature a special bonus track, will be released shortly in collaboration with Metal Age Productions, Kristallblut Records and Supreme Music Creations.  Artwork for the album features  the strange and disturbing Zombie Foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi.

Talking about the ideas behind the two videos, HELHEIM had this to say:

“The videos, “Baklengs mot intet” and “Ymr”, give the best illustration of the concept behind the new Helheim project, “landawarijaR”.  Whilst the theme of “Ymr” is about defining yourself through Norse arts and works -making the metaphorical climb of Yggdrasil in other words, the theme of “Baklengs mot Intet” describes the inner battle, the bottomless despair and endless futility experienced by a Walker of the Way.  “Ymr”, therefore,  describes the ascent and the letting go from the top,  whilst “Baklengs mot intet” describes the fall and its possible implications.

“Through these songs Helheim are continuing their exploration and modern interpretation of the darker aspects of the North-European pre-Christian culture, capturing the spirit of the Norse heritage in ways that have eluded both to researchers and archaeologists”.

“Baklengs mot intet” itself is also available as a digi single on iTunes at HERE, on Tidal at HERE ,  and on Spotify at HERE and is available for immediate download for anyone pre-ordering either the CD or LP version of “landawarijaR” from https://helheim.bandcamp.com

The video is by the renowned Romanian artist and designer Costin Chioreanu, with whom Nilsen has a long-standing working relationship not only in terms of album artwork, but also videos and live performance.

Commenting on the video Nilsen said: “I find the video to be a disturbing piece.  Costin Chioreanu has dived into the abyss of our collective consciousness and has emerged with images of our destruction.  The joint annihilation of all life.  Future generations sacrificed upon the altar of Moloch.  A massacre of innocents from beyond the womb in the hope that we will be blessed with earthly pleasures in return”.

Of all the tracks on “A Requiem for Terra”, “Moloch” happens to be Nilsen’s  favourite, and one which he recently described as acting as the centerpiece for the entire album.  It also features a guest appearance from TAAKE and ORKAN guitarist Gjermund Fredheim.

black-hole-generator-pr2

“A Requiem for Terra” is the long-awaited debut full-length  album from BLACK HOLE GENERATOR.  It follows on from the band’s first ever release, the “Black Karma” MCD, and was ten long years in the making due to Nilsens commitments not only to VULTURE INDUSTRIES, but also to his career  as one of Norway’s most successful producers, working with bands such as TAAKE and HELHEIM, as well as being one of the people behind the Dark Essence Records and Karisma Records labels.

It is an album that has delighted many guitar fans with guitarist Arve Isdal (ENSLAVED, AUDREY HORNE) being joined on the album by the previously-mentioned Gjermund Fredheim, who guests on three of the tracks, and  Dag Terje Andersen, who provides additional guitars.   Artwork for  “A Requiem for Terra” is also by Costin Chioreanu,  tracklisting is as follows:

  1. A Requiem for Terra
  2. Titan
  3. Moloch
  4. Beneath a Chemical Sky
  5. Emerging Pantheon
  6. Earth Eater
  7. Spiritual Blight

“Anti-Cosmic Art”, the new album from veteran Norwegian Black Metallers SARKOM is streaming in its entirety ahead of its 2nd December release date on Dark Essence Records.  The album can be heard exclusively on No Clean Singing at http://www.nocleansinging.com/2016/11/30/an-ncs-album-premiere-and-a-review-sarkom-anti-cosmic-art/

The  seven-track album was originally intended to mark the band’s tenth anniversary, but was unavoidably delayed due to a series of personal and technical difficulties.  “Anti-Cosmic Art” displays the versatility of the Norwegian veterans, ranging, as it does, from Old School Black Metal to more experimental tracks.  It is brutally catchy, largely guitar-driven, and the whole is imbued with the crushingly dark sound that SARKOM has made its own.

SARKOM’s choice of guest artists for “Anti-Cosmic Art” is a clear indication of how unafraid the band is to step out of their comfort zone, with appearances from the likes of SHINING’s Peter Huss,  Ronni Le Tekrø from TNT and ROQUEFIRE and TROLLFEST’s Sagstad  who all contribute to give the album a guitar-driven sound, whilst  ALFAHANNE frontman  Pehr Skjoldhammer’s  distinctive vocals add a completely different dimension to the track “Come, dear Cancer”.

With artwork by Spectrvm Lvsitani, tracklisting for “Anti-Cosmic Art” is as follows:

  1. Previous associates, now as targets for the gun
  2. Mind-abscess
  3. Ruiners of our family tree
  4. Seen through the eyes of a paedophile priest
  5. Come, dear cancer
  6. Black metal necrophilia
  7. Sodomy and lust (Sodom cover).

SARKOM bassist Sgt V will be doing a DJ turn at Kniven in Oslo on the 2nd December, where he will play the whole of “Anti-Cosmic Art” to mark its release.   Confirmed upcoming shows for SARKOM:

03 Dec:  Good Omens, Trondheim, Norway
17 Dec:  Revolver, Oslo, Norway

With the release date for CREST OF DARKNESS’ seventh full-length album “Welcome the Dead” having been brought forward to the 25th November, the band has released a video for the title track.  Directed by Anders Børresen for MONITORmeda, the video for “Welcome the Dead” can be seen below and on CREST OF DARKNESS’  YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/4jxLXUPRLyI

x
Commenting on the video, founder and frontman Ingar Amlien had this to say: “We wanted to make a video that offers a glimpse into the dark world of CREST OF DARKNESS.  Perhaps we are just story tellers recounting a fairytale,  and the video can certainly be viewed and enjoyed at that level, but we are also  touching on aspects of Life itself and those eternal questions that people ask themselves about life and death and the meaning of it all.

“We might not have all the answers, and in all honesty we don’t even want to pretend that we do, but what we do want is to make people think for themselves, and find their own answers .  Let’s face it, we are all Gods.  Each of us builds their own universe, and it just happens that the world of CREST OF DARKNESS is my universe”.

Recorded at the at MLP Studio by Nils H. Mæhlum, and mastered at the Kvålsonic Lab by Tom Kvålsvoll, the nine-track album promises to be the heaviest, darkest and most introspective album in the band’s twenty plus year history.    It will be released on My Kingdom Music in both CD and Digital formats, as well as a double LP format which will feature a special bonus track.

With artwork that features  the strange and disturbing Zombie Foetus sculptures created by the Italian artist Andrea Falaschi, tracklisting on “Welcome the Dead” is as follows:

1. Welcome The Dead
2. Chosen By The Devil
3. Scourged And Crucified
4. My Black Bride
5. Borrowed Life
6. The Almighty
7. Memento Mori
8. The Noble Art
9. Katharsis

“Welcome the Dead” includes a guest appearance  by Norwegian actor Espen Reboli Bjerke, well known for his extensive work in films, theatre, radio and Television.  Bjerke, who also won a Spelleman Award, the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammies, performs the  spoken part on “Katharsis”,  the closing track on the album.

crest-of-darkness-reboli-pr2

Amlien, whose illustrious musical history started with the legendary CONCPTION, and includes  ROQUEFIRE and  AMLIEN’s INFERNO,  confirms that “Welcome the Dead” has a particular significance for him:  ” I’ve put a hell of a lot of myself and my emotions  into this album, even more so than usual.  I’ve always felt that when we are on stage, we create a sort of magic, and this time we have been able to transfer that magic to the recordings.  You could say this is my personal Black Mass”.

CREST OF DARKNESS’ lineup of  Amlien on bass and vocals, Rebo on guitars, Bernhard (ex- PALE FOREST) on drums, and Kristian Wentzel on keyboards,  will celebrate the release of “Welcome the Dead” with a show special Friday the 13th show at Retro in Raufoss, Norway in January.

helheim-pr

Dark Essence Records have announced that the 20th January has been set for the release of “landawarijaR” the much-anticipated ninth full-length album from Norwegian Viking Metallers HELHEIM.

“landawarijaR” will contain seven tracks, all of which bear the hallmarks of HELHEIM’s traditional Norse heritage.  A Heritage  of which they are rightly proud and to which they have remained true, eschewing the temptation to turn themselves into the Viking parodies that so many bands have espoused.   With “landawarijaR” HELHEIM use their lyrics to express the need to include the Norse Heritage into modern life by emphasising the importance, mystery and never-changing wonder of the Runes.

Just as HELHEIM’s “raunijaR” followed in the same vein as its predecessor “Asgards Fall”, “landawarijaR” continues where “Heidindomr” ended.  All four albums incorporate the use of Timpani and Horns, and the new album also has a number of artists performing guest vocals including William Hut, Morten Egeland (NARROWHEAD), Pehr Skjoldhammer (ALFAHANNE),  Bjornar E Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) and Ottorpedo.

With music by by H’grimnir and V’gandr,  lyrics by V’gandr and  artwork by H’grimnir, “landawarijaR”   was recorded at the Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen, and produced by Bjornar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) and mastered by Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED).

Tracklisting for “landawarijaR” is as follows:

1. Ymr
2. Baklengs mot intet
3. Rista blodørn
4. landawarijaR
5. Ouroboros
6. Synir af heidindomr
7. Enda-dagr

HELHEIM recently announced that two songs from the album were being turned into videos by Guilherme Henriques, who is both producing and directing the videos.  ‘Ymr’ and ‘Baklengs mot intet’ are the songs that been chosen because, as the band  explained, they are  “neatly intertwined into a dualism which Guillherme will portray”.  The videos are expected to be debuted in the run-up to the release of “landawarijaR”.

A series of stills from the video shoot by the photographer Mathis Backe of Yggdrasil Photo (http://yggdrasilphoto.net ), and featuring HELHEIM’s lineup of Vgandr on bass and vocals, Hgrimnir on rhythm guitar and vocals, Noralf on rhythm and lead guitar and Hrymr on drums and programming , were recently published, and can be seen on HELHEIM’s Facebook page at  http://www.facebook.com/helheimnorway

Veterans of the Norwegian Black Metal scene, SARKOM are known for their crushingly dark sound, and with the brutally catchy “Anti-Cosmic Art” album, the band produce more of the same, but this time they also show that far from being afraid to step out of their comfort zone, they happily embrace the idea and take their listeners on a journey that ranges from  Old School Black Metal through to more experimental tracks.

Even the choice of guest artists indicates how versatile the band’s music can be, with appearances from the likes of SHINING’s Peter Huss,  Ronni Le Tekrø from TNT and ROQUEFIRE and TROLLFEST’s Sagstad  who all contribute to give “Anti-Cosmic Art” a guitar-driven sound, as well as ALFAHANNE frontman  Pehr Skjoldhammer whose distinctive vocals add a completely different dimension to the track “Come, dear Cancer”.

With  artwork by Spectrvm Lvsitani, tracklisting for “Anti-Cosmic Art” is as follows:

  1. Previous associates, now as targets for the gun
  2. Mind-abscess
  3. Ruiners of our family tree
  4. Seen through the eyes of a paedophile priest
  5. Come, dear cancer
  6. Black metal necrophilia
  7. Sodomy and lust (Sodom cover)

To  mark the release of “Anti-Cosmic Art” SARKOM will play the following two Norwegian dates:

03 Dec:  Good Omens, Trondheim
17 Dec:  Revolver, Oslo

“Anti-Cosmic Art”, is set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 2nd December, and it is now available to pre-order, together with related merchandise from https://www.darkessencerecords.no/artists/sarkom/   and the US website at https://darkessence.aisamerch.com in CD format , as well as at https://sarkom.bandcamp.com   where the album is also available digitally.

BLACK HOLE GENERATOR’s creator Bjornar E. Nilsen had this to say about the track “Moloch was one of the first tracks that was finalized for the album.  It is one of my personal favourites from “A Requiem for Terra” and it acts as the centerpiece for the album. It embodies the album’s bleak atmosphere which spans most of its dynamic range.  Starting off as a mesmerizing hymn to the deity Moloch, it is broken up by frantic, furious parts tearing everyone from  their mantric slumbers.  On this track I was lucky to get Gjermund from TAAKE and ORKAN on board on lead guitars, and his contribution really shines on this one!”

It’s been ten years since the appearance of BLACK HOLE GENERATOR’S debut release, the “Black Karma” MCD, and given Nilsen’s standing not only as VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ frontman, well known for his idiosyncratic vocals and eccentric stage performances, but also as one of Norway’s most successful producers, working with bands such as TAAKE and HELHEIM, as well as one of the people behind the Dark Essence Records and Karisma Records labels, the delay is hardly surprising.

“A Requiem for Terra”, will delight many guitar fans with guitarist Arve Isdal (ENSLAVED, AUDREY HORNE) being joined on the album by the previously-mentioned Gjermund Fredheim, who guests on three of the tracks, and  Dag Terje Andersen, who provides additional guitars.   Artwork for  “A Requiem for Terra” is by the Romanian artist and designer Costin Chioreanu, tracklisting is as follows:

  1. A Requiem for Terra
  2. Titan
  3. Moloch
  4. Beneath a Chemical Sky
  5. Emerging Pantheon
  6. Earth Eater
  7. Spiritual Blight

Originally intended to mark the band’s tenth anniversary, but unavoidably delayed due to a series of personal and technical difficulties, “Anti-Cosmic Art” displays the versatility of the Norwegian veterans, ranging, as it does, from Old School Black Metal to more experimental tracks.  It is brutally catchy, largely guitar-driven, and the whole is imbued with the crushingly dark sound that SARKOM has made its own.

To  mark the release of “Anti-Cosmic Art” SARKOM will play the following two Norwegian dates:

03 Dec:  Good Omens, Trondheim
17 Dec:  Revolver, Oslo

Norway’s SLEGEST, whose unmistakable, swaggering, heavy rock sound is filled with infectious riffs,  distinctive melodies, and vocals that owe their provenance to Black Metal,  are set to release their second full-length album “Vidsyn” on  Dark Essence Records on the 4th of November, have today revealed a video for the opening track from the album, which can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/itzR9V1JgN8

x

Founder and frontman Ese, who assures us that the video is “best enjoyed loud”,  gives us an insight into the track: “I fortida sitt lys” is the opening track of “Vidsyn” and is somewhat of a punk number, or at least the closest you’ll get to it in the cold vein of Slegest,  since groove and heaviness are the centre of it all.  We think the vibe, the visuals, and the atmosphere of both the location for the shoot and the finished video complements the music and the feel not just of this song,  but of the whole album.

” The concept behind the video was the brainchild of Håvard Nesbø, who also produced the video, on a budget, it has to be said,  based on pure idealism and a case of home brewed lager.  Filming took place  in a valley in Leikanger,  at the site of an old mountain barn that is long-abandoned by time.  Like the song itself, the theme of the video can be placed within the context  of the past – at the intersection of “the now”  and the ever present whiff of olden times”.

Recorded at the Conclave & Earshot and the Systrond Studios,  “Vidsyn” was jointly produced by Ese, and  Bjørnar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR), who also mixed the album.  Mastering is by Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED).  Guesting on the album is Grutle Kjellson (ENSLAVED).  The cover art is once again rooted in the art of Nikolai Astrup with design is by Tom Korsvold and drawing is by Lars Hellebø.  Tracklisting is as follows:

1. I fortida sitt lys
2. Som i eit endelikt
3. Du
4. komfortabelt nommen midtvekes
5. Wolf
6. The Reanimator
7. Inn i uvissao
8. Tenn den gamle varde

SLEGEST lineup of Ese on Vocals and Rhythm Guitars, Sør (BÄÄÄV, VONBRÅTEN) on Lead Guitars, Hövard (BOMBEKLÜCHTER) on Bass and Fjøsne on Drums, will celebrate the release of “Vidsyn” with show at Krøsset in Oslo on the 12th November, where they will be joined by Sweden’s ALFAHANNE.  With the reputation that both bands have as high-energy and totally captivating performers, the event  promises to be pretty special.

The band will then hit the road in December of this year , jointing SHINING’s 20th Anniversary tour, which also features Dark Essence label mates TAAKE, with whom the band has previously toured.  The prospect of sharing a stage with Niklas Kvarforth and Hoest, widely acknowledged to be two of the most accomplished and exciting front men in extreme metal, would seem daunting to most bands, but judging from the reviews SLEGEST has received for its live performances, and from the number of fans the has  picked up following those performances,  this is a band that is more than able to hold its own against the two titans.

Routing for the tour with SHINING and TAAKE as follows:
02 Dec: NUKE, Berlin, DE
03 Dec: Into Darkness Festival, Neushoom, Leeuwarden, NL
04 Dec: Underworld, London, UK
05 Dec: Petit Bain, Paris, FR
06 Dec: UBU, Rennes, FR
07 Dec: De verlichte Geest, Roeselare, BE
08 Dec:  Kulturfabrik, Esch – sur -Alzette, LU
09 Dec:  Matrix, Bochum, DE
10 Dec:  Backstage, Munich, DE
11 Dec: Circolo Colony, Brescia, IT
