When KRAKOW released their 2015 album “amaran” on Dark Essence Records, fans of the band were given an insight into the calmer side of the band. With its dream-like soundscapes interspersed with harsher, more sinister atmospheres and an experimental, drone feel, certain tracks on the album were always going to lend themselves to visualization. It is one of these tracks – the album opener “luminauts” – that KRAKOW have chosen to make into a lyric video. The result is an extraordinary blend of music and visuals that are combined to create a piece of art that exudes mystery and, it has to be said, has a quasi-mystical feel. The video is streaming exclusively on Noisey and can be seen at http://noisey.vice.com/blog/krakow-luminauts-video
Talking about the video, the band had this to say: “The lyric video for ‘luminauts’ was an initiative by Polish video artist MARCIN HALERZ from Red Pig Productions (HATE, VOODOO GODS, SARATAN, DECAPITATED, KAMPFAR, etc.), and his creative thoughts led us to choose this particular track. The musical and lyrical themes throughout the song represent the band’s contrasting sides, and this was interpreted with grace by Mr. Halerz. It is indeed a visual concretization of a band that often veers off into the abstract, and a significantly different, and fascinating, way to experience a KRAKOW song”.
Formed in the fall of 2005, KRAKOW ‘s lineup consists of experienced musicians whose skills are beyond doubt, and includes Kjartan Grønhaug on guitars, René Misje on guitars and vocals, bassist and vocalist Frode Kilvik (AETERNUS, VITHR, GRAVDAL) and Ask Ty Ulvhedin Arctander (KAMPFAR, HADES ALMIGHTY) on drums. “amaran”, the follow up up to 2012’s much praised sophomore album “diin”, was produced by long-time collaborator Iver Sandøy at Solslottet and Duper Studio, with artwork by Thomas Hooper . According to the band, its making was “a journey, never easy, but always thrilling”.
Fan-filmed footage of KRAKOW performing the track “Termination of Origin” from the “diin” album can be seen below and on the band’s YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/Ku9B1bWCWjc
MISTUR fans have waited a long for the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2009 debut “Attende”, but that wait is finally over, with Dark Essence Records announcing that the new album, “In Memoriam”, will hit the streets on the 29th April.

Recorded at the Conclave & Earshot Studios in Bergen, and in the band’s private studio, “In Memoriam” was produced by MISTUR main man Espen Bakketeig and mixed by Bjørnar E. Nilsen. The album bears all the hallmarks of MISTUR’s special brand of Sognametal, this time with longer, more epic songs, complex layered arrangements, clever melodies and a touch of progressive elements, whilst never losing the unique Sognametal style that lies at the very heart of the band.

Norwegian Black Metal veterans RAGNAROK are streaming their upcoming eighth full-length album “Psychopathology” in its entirety ahead of its release on the 25th March. The album, which is being streamed exclusively by Terrorizer magazine can be heard at http://www.terrorizer.com/news/ragnarok-stream-new-album-psychopathology
RAGNAROK guitarist Bolverk had this to say about the album:
“The new Ragnarok album follows in the footsteps of its predecessor ‘Malediction’. A mix of old Ragnarok and newer inspiration. The title of the album is ‘Psychopathology’, a term which in short means to dissect someone’s mind. A couple of lines of text from the title track are: “I’m inside your mind. I dissect your soul,” and one of the points of the lyrics is that sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. This is by no means a concept album, but most of the lyrics can be associated with madness or deviation in some form or another. To make it very brief: ‘Dominance and Submission’ is about sadomasochism. ‘The Eighth of the Seven Plagues’ and ‘Heretic’ are about religion. ‘Where Dreams go to Die’ is about madness. ‘Lies’ and ‘I Hate’ are pretty self-explanatory. ‘Into the Abyss’ is about the dark path that most of us are on. ‘Infernal Majesty’ is a tribute to our master. ‘Blood’ is about sacrifice. ‘My Creator’ has some very personal lyrics written by Jontho, while the other lyrics are written by (myself) Bolverk”.
The eleven-track album was recorded at the Endarker Studio in Sweden with MARDUK bassist Devo at the helm and is the first time that founder Jontho, one of Norwegian Black Metal’s most recognizable drummers, is not to be found behind the drumkit. In a surprise announcement last year, Jontho took up the mantle of frontman, and relinquished his drummer role to DAUDEN’s Malignant . On guitars is RAGNAROK stalwart Bolverk, whilst bassist DezeptiCunt makes his final appearance with the band.

In a statement issued today, SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth confirmed that the band had reached an agreement with former label, Spinefarm Records, that would see the label re-releasing three of SHINING’s recordings, which, according to Kvarforth, “have all been unavailable for a few years due to several “inconvenient” matters”.
The frontman went on to say: “SHINING’s seventh full-length album “VII / Född Förlorare” and the “Lots Of Girls Gonna Get Hurt” EP will both appear in CD and Limited Edition vinyl formats, with the vinyl formats having one additional track each.
“But the best news of all is that “Redefining Darkness” will once again be available to those who missed out on its short-lived presence on the record market. The album will be available in both deluxe DIGIPAK and VINYL editions”.
The deluxe digipak edition of “Redefining Darkness”, and the vinyl editions of all three of the re-releases, have been re-mastered by Andy La Rocque at the Sonic Train Studios, and are now available to pre-order, along with new merchandise and bundles from www.shininglegions.com

With a new album in the works, a brand new lineup and a return to the live scene, veteran UK Black Metallers HEATHEN DEITY have hit the ground running after a hiatus that lasted just over a decade. If that wasn’t enough they have also kicked off 2016 with an appearance on the Official NARGAROTH tribute, covering the track “Karmageddon”, and have three tracks from their “For the Glory of Satan” release featured on the Andy Horry documentary “British Black Metal: The Extreme Underground”.
A video of HEATHEN DEITY performing the “Karmageddon” cover from the Official Nargaroth Tribute album can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/GfEoyo5z0vw
HEATHEN DEITY was formed in 1998 by frontman and bassist Dagon, with the intention of expressing the true essence of English Black Metal by creating a sound that encompasses the ideals of raw black metal, and interspersing it with melodic instrumentals with a strong “folk” feel that hearkens back to England’s past. The band went on to release two demos and the seven-track EP “For the Glory of Satan” and carved themselves a niche in the UK’s live scene before being forced to take a break in 2004.
Remaining with Dagon in the new lineup is original member Azrael on guitars, whilst new addition Xjort will become the HEATHEN DEITY’s full-time drummer, both in the studio and live. The band is currently looking at bringing in a rhythm guitar and bassist for live duties, ready for their stage comeback which will take place in October at the Blackwood Gathering, which takes place in the forest on the shores of Lake Windermere in Cumbria.
A video of HEATHEN DEITY rehearsing can be seen below and on the band’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/hTqKuJDgz5c
What made Dagon decide to bring back the band after such a long time? “I had been busy with day to day things and with my solo project FROSTWORK, whilst Azrael was busy with ETHEREAL FOREST and his various projects, and although we’d been talking about it for a long time, we could never find the time to get together to concentrate on HEATHEN DEITY until now” commented Dagon.
“Would you believe that we started working on the new album in 2002 and didn’t pick it up again until 2014. As you can imagine, with the passage of time, we are looking at those songs from a completely different perspective now, and we have re-worked and updated them to reflect where we find ourselves both musically and philosophically at this moment in time. We also intend to include newly written material, as well as some of the songs we performed live back in the day, songs that never appeared on any of our releases. We see these songs as marking the end of one chapter of HEATHEN DEITY, whilst the new material will herald a new beginning”.
Xjort is currently laying down the drum tracks, and as soon as they are finished Azrael and Dagon will do their part on guitars and bass respectively, before Dagon starts to record vocals. The album will be mixed and mastered by Jonny Maudling (KULL, ex BAL-SAGOTH) at his Waylands Forge Studios in Sheffield. Maudling and Dagon are long-time collaborators, having previously worked together, and the band feels that Maudling is the ideal person to help HEATHEN DEITY achieve the sound and atmosphere they want for the album.
Norwegian Black Metallers SVARTELDER, whose lineup comprises members of CARPATHIAN FOREST, NORDJEVEL, IN THE WOODS, DEN SAAKALDTE, PANTHEON I, OLD FOREST and DOEDSVANGR, have released details of what will be the band’s debut full length album. Titled “Pyres” and set for release on Dusktone in April of this year, the six-track album will be available as a digipack CD , as well as a Limited Edition A5 Digi CD limited to 100 copies, and a 300 copy Limited Edition vinyl.
Tracklisting for “Pyres” as follows:
01 – Guds Helvete
02 – Ingen Vet Jeg Var…
03 – Stygian Macrocosmos Pt. I
04 – Stygian Macrocosmos Pt. II
05 – Realm of Breathing Eyes
06 – Devil Of The Flesh
A preview of the artwork by Khaos Diktator (ARDITI, NORDJEVEL, HORNA etc.) which will be used for the album can be seen below.
Recorded in Norway at the Woodscave Studio. and mastered by WSL Studio in France, “Pyres” is the follow up to SVARTELDER’s “Askebundet” EP, which hit the streets last year, also on Dusktone.
Aside from founder and frontman Doedsadmiral SVARTELDER’s lineup comprises of Maletoth on bass and guitars, AK-47 on drums, and Kobold on keys. There is no doubt that the band’s sound is firmly rooted in black metal, but SVARTELDER’s strength lies in the fact that not only is its lineup vastly experienced, it is also able to draw that experience from a variety of different musical backgrounds and influences. And this is something that allows the band to mix different elements together, bringing a fresher, more varied, approach to the overall sound.
Norwegian Black Metallers RAGNAROK have today revealed a third track from their upcoming eighth full length album “Psychopathology. Dark Essence Records have today announced that they have added Norwegian Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM to their roster. The label is set to release the band’s sixth full length album, titled “Red In Tooth And Claw”, later this year, on a date as yet to be announced. As a taste of what fans can expect, MADDER MORTEM have put together a teaser of some of the songs from “Red In Tooth And Claw”, which can be heard at http://www.maddermortem.com/mp3/teasers/MM_RITAC_Teaser_01.mp3
Formed in 1993, originally under the name of Mystery Tribe, MADDER MORTEM’s music, with its hauntingly beautiful vocals by Agnete M. Kirkevaag, is atmospheric and melodic, with a very definite progressive leaning, but at the same time the band can show an underlying aggression that gives their sound a harder, more driven edge than one might expect. Aside from Agnete, MADDER MORTEM’s five-member lineup includes BP. M. Kirkevaag on guitar & vocals, Richard Wikstrand on guitars, Tormod L. Moseng on bass and Mads Solås on drums.
