DARK ESSENCE RECORDS REVEALS ALBUM DETAILS AND NEW SINGLE FROM HARD ROCKERS VESTINDIEN

When you name your band after the last known brothel (now a museum) in your home town, you’d better be able to deliver something special with your music, and without a doubt VESTINDIEN do just that with their sophomore full-length album “Verdande”.

Set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 10th of May, fans had already been given a glimpse into what to expect at the end of last year, when VESTINDIEN released a freshly mixed single even before the album was fully completed.

But now, with the album ready to go, Dark Essence Records are expanding that glimpse with a brand new single titled “Etter ilden”, a track which, according to VESTINDIEN, has undergone a series of iterations before having been deemed ready:

The demo was first written and recorded in the summer of 2021 in a location where the view from our windows was of the Urd, Skuld and Verdande mountains at Bjørnøya. It would be re-recorded several times before it finally came together as intended, at Underschön Studio in the fall of 2023.

“Etter ilden” is about taking the time to find calm and beauty in a world that is chaotic and full of suffering. We acknowledge that it is a privilege to be able to do so, whilst at the same time, we believe it is necessary to keep moving forward.

“Verdande” comes three years on from the release of VESTINDIEN’s debut full-length “Null”, an album that served as an introduction to the band’s unique take on old-school metal but which hinted at something dark and harsh and sinister.

The fact that it was written both in a basement in Bergen, as well as on a secluded island in the Barents Sea, gives “Verdande” a unique feel, allowing its chaotic, claustrophobic underground roots to gain a more spacious, airy feel, that no doubt comes from being written out in the open sea.

With cover art by Geir Wallem and cover design by Sondre Krum Dahl, “Verdande” delivers eight tracks of psychedelic proto-metal with a gloomy twist, and whose song titles are in Norwegian, but whose lyrics are in English.

VESTINDIEN, whose lineup today is comprised of Slettsnok on vocals, guitars and synth, Fader War and Henrik Paulsen on guitars, Karl Johan Johannessen on drums, Petter Beyer on synth and Pål Eirik Veseth on bass, was originally formed in 2009 and quickly earned itself a well-deserved reputation as an up-and-coming hardcore band with a heavy metal twist.

Their frenetic live shows gained the band a solid following, yet one year after the release of their 2011 EP “We are the Lords of Hellfire”, VESTINDIEN inexplicably called it a day. Their emergence several years later saw VESTINDIEN with a more introverted, and less hardcore and aggressive, approach to their music.

Answering only to their own their own standards and expectations, VESTINDIEN’s music today still hints at the bands hardcore roots but it has evolved into a sound that conjures up the essence of black metal, punk and old school rock’n’roll, all of which are enveloped in a dark shroud.

Although SHAKAI identify themselves as an Indie-Jazz band, this is somewhat of a loose description, there for convenience rather than as a barrier to individuality, because this group of musicians would rather not be shackled by genre definitions, preferring to let their creativity run free and allow their music to speak for itself.

SHAKAI are a quintet of musicians who invite their audience to enter a world full of unexpected elements. And now Is It Jazz? Records invite that very audience to hear what they can expect from the band’s sophomore full-length “Fragments” with the release of a single taken from the album.

SHAKAI’s leader Eline Rafteseth had this to say about the song:

“Dandelion Child” is a song against injustice, written in despair during the aftermath of the 2022 terrorist attack against Pride in Oslo. The lyrics are about standing stronger together, and that love must always win.

I think this song describes some of my feelings towards all the terrible things happening in the world, and how our leaders are full of empty words but no action.

It was in 2016 that Eline formed SHAKAI, drawing on musicians from music conservatories to form a lineup that, aside from Eline (NH3, SOFT NOISE ENSEMBLE, HEAVY ASTRO) on bass and vocals, includes Elisabeth Lid Trøen (BERGEN BIG BAND, TRØEN/ARNESEN KVARTETT) on saxophones, Gabriela Garrubo (GARRUBO, METTESON, AMAILIE HOLT KLEIVE) on vocals, Simen Walle (ATARI, NELLY, MALUM) on guitars and Kenneth Kapstad (SPIDERGAWD, COBRA KRAFT, MONOLITHIC, GOAT THE HEAD, ex-MOTORPSYCHO etc.) on drums.

Whilst firmly rooted in Jazz and Improvisation, SHAKAI’s musicians are trained in a wide variety of disciplines, which, along with their varied backgrounds and experience in diverse projects, allows them to create a unique and varied sound.

The name SHAKAI itself is derived from the Japanese word for “society”, and it could be said that its members actually do form a “society” comprised of five individuals, each with their own stories and differing perspectives, and each contributing music and lyrics that touch on everything, from life’s big questions, small stories, reckonings with the past, and hopes for the future.

With “Fragments” SHAKAI have created an album that is both beautiful and raw, playful and strange. Recorded at Bergen’s Duper Studio with producers Jørgen Træen and Iver Sandøy, and with artwork by Tom Korsvold, the seven-track album is due for release on Is It Jazz? Records on the 7th June.

SHAKAI’s next live appearance will be on the 5th April at the Sogndal Kulturhus in Norway. where fans will be able to witness a band whose stage presence is one of studied ease, almost, at times, of introspection. But, rest assured, that whilst on stage there is no hint of navel gazing as the band skilfully brings its music to life, drawing the audience in and surprising them with unexpected turns.

DARK ESSENCE RECORDS REVEALS FIRST SINGLE FROM UPCOMING VESTINDIEN ALBUM

As work on VESTINDIEN’s sophomore full-length album “Verdande” nears completion, Dark Essence Records has managed to give fans of the band an early Christmas present by releasing one of the finished tracks as a single.

Almost three years on from the release of VESTINDIEN’s 2020 debut full-length “Null”, the new single, titled “Forbi Stillheten”, bridges the gap from where the band were then, to where they are today.

“Null” served to introduce fans to VESTINDIEN’s unique approach to a dark, harsh and sinister old-school metal sound, and whilst “Forbi Stillheten” is still very much rooted in metal, this time it also references 60s psych and 70s prog.

Formed in 2009 and named after the last known brothel (now a museum) in Bergen, VESTINDIEN had a reputation as an up-and-coming hardcore band with a heavy metal twist, and a solid following eager to witness VESTINDIEN’s frenetic live shows. DARK ESSENCE RECORDS TO RELEASE SPLIT EP FROM TAAKE AND HELHEIM

Norwegian Black Metal icon Hoest has cast some positivity into the hell that has been 2020, with the release of two TAAKE 10″split EPs, one with DEATHCULT (on Edged Circle Productions) and one with WHOREDOM RIFE (on Terratur Possessions), and now, as the year draws to a close, a third split has been announced.

The new EP will see TAAKE join forces with HELHEIM, and will be the last of the three 10″ splits. Titled ”Henholdsvis” the EP will appear on Bergen’s eponymous Dark Essence Records, the long-time label of both bands, and is set for release on the 5th March 2021.

For “Henholdsvis” TAAKE has recorded two new tracks, “Brotne Bein og Mannefall” and “Ein Baat i Foss”, whose lyrics are based on poems by the famed Norwegian writer Arne Garborg (1851-1924). With these new tracks, the band has produced the kind of Black Metal fans crave – dark, cold and gritty.

HELHEIM, on the other hand, will present two covers. The first is a re-mastered version of EMPEROR’s “Heksesabbat / Witches Sabbath”, which originally appeared on the tribute album “A Tribute to Emperor – In Honour of Icon E” in 2012, and which has now been totally remastered. For the second of the two covers HELHEIM have chosen to go down a very interesting path by recording a very different, and original, version of “Orkan” , from TAAKE’s “Noregs Vaapen” album.

Recorded by Bjørnar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) at his Conclave and Earshot Studios in the bands’ hometown of Bergen, and with artwork by H’grimnir, tracklisting for “Henholdsvis” is as follows:

Being literary by the sea, it is the perfect spot for Close to the Rain. LEPROUS
With a calendar filled with sold-out shows in Europe and North America, Leprous is quickly becoming one of the lead acts of the Norwegian prog scene. 2017 saw the release of their 5^th studio album “Malina” to critical and public acclaim. Since then the band has been touring non-stop, filling venues in North and South-America, Europe and Asia. OAK
Following the release of their second album “False Memory Archive”, OAK has taken a big leap towards the front of the Norwegian prog scene. THE WINDMILL
…is a Norwegian progressive rock band formed in 2001 in the outskirts of Oslo. Musically the band can best be described as symphonic neo prog, influenced by several bands from the golden years of the seventies, such as Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel and others. The debut album “To be continued …” was released May 2010, and the followed up by “The Continuation” in 2013 to great reviews around the world. 5 years later, 2018 saw the birth of “Tribus” to great acclaim from fans and critics. At the end of last year HELHEIM announced the completion of their new album and teased fans with the statement that this was “by far the most intriguing album we’ve done thus far. Expect the unexpected!”. And today the unexpected has arrived, with Dark Essence Records revealing not just the details of HELHEIM’s tenth full-length album, but also the title track “Rignir”, as well details of the band’s first full European tour in several years.

For well over two decades HELHEIM have represented their Norse heritage through their music and their lyrics, with an authenticity and an integrity that is frequently diluted within the so-called “Viking” genres. With “Rignir”, the band again turned to their heritage when writing the poems that form the lyrics for the album, drawing inspiration from the ljóðaháttr, an Old Norse alliterative verse form used largely in the Eddas.

As to the actual subject matter of “Rignir”, which translated means Rain, HELHEIM explain:

This time around we have been very inspired by the local weather of Bergen. The autumn and winter seasons can summon the darkest of feelings within oneself, and this backdrop served as the fertilizer that would germinate the seeds of our lyrical ideas. Exploring the darkness of nature as something that can be seen, as well as sensed, it became a canvas where the pen drew words that rose from the depths of solemnity and alienation. Although each track depicts an ever growing intensity of suffering and loss, there’s still a dialogue on how to maintain some sort of sanity or inner peace.

Let the rain fall heavily upon you.

Once again HELHEIM have recorded the album at the Conclave & Earshot Studios in Bergen, calling on the services of Bjornar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) to mix and produce “Rignir” alongside the band, and Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED) to handle the mastering.

If there is one thing that Hoest, the iconic leader and frontman of Norwegian Black Metallers TAAKE, has demonstrated with his trademark Helnorsk Svartmetall sound over the band’s twenty five year career, it is that it is possible for the genre not only to survive, but also to thrive and re-generate itself into something fresh and relevant, whilst losing none of its traditional feel.

And alongside TAAKE for many years now has been the Dark Essence Records label, based, like the band itself, in Bergen, and well known not only for its roster of long-established and extremely successful exponents of Black and Extreme Metal, but also for its unerring ability to sniff out the best of the new generation of bands coming up today.

Now, this hugely successful partnership between label and band has come up with a collaboration that will see the release of “7 Fjell”. This career-spanning, limited edition box set will be a one-time only issue of 1,000 copies, and will contain seven picture discs that comprise all of TAAKE’s full-length albums to date. Each individual disc of seven tracks each (no bonus tracks), will come in a die-cut sleeve, and also included in the box will be a TAAKE slip mat for your record player! Of the seven albums, the last four have never before been released as picture discs.

“7 Fjell”, which translated means the “7 Mountains”, is a reference to both the seven mountains that surround Bergen, as well as the seven albums themselves. With artwork by HELHEIM’s H’grimnir, based on a photo by Peter Beste, the picture discs are as follows:

DARK METALLERS AETERNUS COMPLETE WORK ON EIGHTH FULL-LENGTH ALBUM

Veteran Norwegian Dark Metallers AETERNUS have completed work on what will be the band’s eighth full-length album. Titled “Heathen”, the seven-track album was recorded at Bergen’s Conclave & Earshot studios and produced by Herbrand Larsen, and is set for release on Dark Essence Records later this year.

One of the pioneers of the “Dark Metal” genre, AETERNUS was formed in 1993 by guitarist and frontman Ares. The band’s sound is one that combines features from both Black Metal and Death Metal, interspersed with haunting, melodic interludes, all topped off with skilled musicianship. Commenting on what fans can expect from “Heathen”, an album which will also mark AETERNUS’ 25th Anniversary, the band had this to say:

” We feel we’ve produced seven great songs for “Heathen”, all with AETERNUS’ trademark sound, which is a mix of complex extreme music along with heavy riffs and of course some great melodic features. You could say that we are more than satisfied with the results”.

Aside from Ares, AETERNUS’ lineup is composed of Phobos (GRAVDAL) on drums and KRAKOW’s Eld on bass, and sharp-eyed fans will notice that guitarist Specter is missing. As the band explains:

“Before having fully completed the composition part of “Heathen”, Specter felt that he had little more to offer the band, and that his long search for music was not only taking up too much of his own time, but it was also slowing down AETERNUS’ progress, and as a result, he decided that it was best for all concerned that he quit the band. He did however compose several terrific riffs which we feel are outstanding, and they have been included in the album. We would like to thank Specter for all his work with AETERNUS, and wish him all the best for the future.

“This of course means that once again AETERNUS has recorded an album where Ares’ considerable skills have been put to good use, and he has composed and played all the guitar leads on “Heathen”. We’re sure that having read this, fans are wondering what is going to happen as far as live performances go. No problem there! We have hired Gorm, from the Norse metal band THYRUZ, to play live with us, and he has been busy rehearsing our material. He will be more than ready when AETERNUS hits the stage again”.

NORWEGIAN BLACK METALLERS TAAKE ANNOUNCE EUROPEAN TOUR DATES

Norwegian Black Metallers TAAKE will continue to celebrate their 25th Anniversary with a European tour in October of this year which will consist of a total of 17 shows and will feature material from all of the band’s albums. Taake European Tour 2018PR

Having kicked off the 25th Anniversary celebrations with a show in the band’s home town of Bergen, TAAKE’s iconic frontman and founder , Hoest, has, over the years, honed the band’s trademark “Helnorsk Svartmetall ” sound to perfection. For a quarter of a century Hoest has always remained true to the spirit of Norwegian Black Metal, both in the studio and on the stage, and has never allowed the icy, dangerous edge, much beloved by Black Metal fans, to stagnate, keeping it fresh with surprising twists and turns.

Hoest’s powerful presence, which dominates any stage on which he sets foot, coupled with a live lineup of experienced and highly skilled musicians, and an extensive back catalogue to draw from, has always ensured that TAAKE’s performances are an experience that is guaranteed to enthral.

Aside from the upcoming European tour, TAAKE will be making a number of Festival and club appearances this year including Stockholm Slaughter in Sweden, Incineration Festival in the UK, Tuska Live in Finland, In Flammen Open Air in Germany, Beyond the Gates in Norway and the Colony Summer Fest in Italy.

With a genuine pride and belief in their Norse heritage, HELHEIM have spent over 25 years honing their craft, and making use of old Norse legends and traditional instruments to rise far above the plethora of bands that make up the genre, and who succeed in coming across as mere cartoon-like parodies of the real thing.

And the start of 2018 certainly finds HELHEIM’s lineup of V’gandr on bass and vocals, H’grimnir on guitar and vocals, Hrymr on drums and Noralf on guitars reaping the rewards of all their hard work and dedication to their craft, with two excellent pieces of news. Starting off with a nomination for the 2017 Spellemann Award (the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy’s) in the Metal category for their ninth full-length album “landawarijaR” which was released on Dark Essence Records in January of last year.

The album, which was recorded at the Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen, and produced by Bjornar E. Nilsen (VULTURE INDUSTRIES, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR) and mastered by Herbrand Larsen (ENSLAVED), includes guest vocals from William Hut, Morten Egeland (NARROWHEAD), Pehr Skjoldhammer (ALFAHANNE), Bjornar E Nilsen and Ottorpedo. Through “landawarijaR’s” music and lyrics, as well as through the two accompanying videos, HELHEIM express the need to include the Norse Heritage into modern life by emphasising the importance, mystery and never-changing wonder of the Runes.

The second piece of news may not be new to HELHEIM’s US fans, but certainly their European fans will not know yet that a track from the band has been used in a high-profile CBS TV series, which has been snapped up by SKY for the UK market – with news still awaited regarding its appearance in other European and Scandinavian countries. The series, SEAL Team, stars DAVID BOREANAZ (Bones, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and follows the exploits of an elite S.E.A.L. team. The track “Jormundgand”, from HELHEIM’s album of the same name, which was originally released in 2006 and re-released on Dark Essence Records in 2008, features in Episode 7. Titled “Borderlines” the track forms the music to a couple of (somewhat controversial) torture training scenes!
