Dark Essence Records have set the  15th March 2019 as the release date for “New Moon”, the upcoming full-length album from SUPERLYNX.  But fans of the Norwegian doom/psycho trio will not have to wait that long to hear something new from the band, because today the label has released a single for the opening track from the album.

Commenting on “Hex”, SUPERLYNX also give fans an insight into the ethos behind  “New Moon” as a whole:

Like most of the new album, HEX was written in challenging times, with feelings of hopelessness caused by both personal and external circumstances. The song was given a ritualistic expression, representing a deep, primal feeling and a need to alter the dark reality. Through creative force, love and a wish for better times, this feeling is transformed into music and given a positive outlet. In this way, HEX represents the essence of the album. We have all been through dark times and have dealt with a lot of it through music. You can say that making the album has been a sort of alchemical process. The focus has been on getting through the dark and holding on to what is good in this world. And one of the best things is that music has come out of it.

“New Moon” will be the second full-length album from SUPERLYNX, which was formed in 2013 by drummer Ole Teigen and bassist/vocalist Pia Isaksen.  A subsequent meeting with guitarist Daniel Bakken, coupled with his performance during rehearsals, changed the duo’s mind about remaining a two-piece  and SUPERLYNX became the trio it is today.

With cover art by Pia Isaksen, “New Moon” was recorded by the band themselves, with a little help from Ole Jørgen Moe, who recorded their debut album.  Mixed  by the band’s long-time sound engineer Amund Tømmerbakke, and mastered by Fridtjof Lindeman at Strype Audio, tracklisting for “New Moon” is as follows:

With their latest release “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 30th November, Norway’s TUSMØRKE have released a video for “Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen” , the opening  track from the album.

Commenting on the song , TUSMØRKE had this to say:

“Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen”  was written during the winter of 2015 and recorded in Det Ytre Rommet  during 2017 and 2018 by Benediktator. The inspiration for the lyrics came from a folk tale by Asbjørnsen & Moe,  as well as from the legends about children who find  silver under rocks in the wilderness. There are stories of poor people stepping on stones and hearing the clang of metal and finding buried and forgotten treasure. There are also stories of people hearing the sound, only to realise later what it must have been and going on the spend the rest of their lives searching for the spot, never to find it again and driven mad with frustration and the lust for coin.

“Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” itself is a a concept album that explores the rich history and mythology of Norway’s capital city Oslo. Vardøger are premonitions that precede an actual event. Utburder are infants who are abandoned in the woods at birth and whose haunting cries reverberate eerily through the night .

TUSMØRKE describe “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” as “the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted”, and, as the “vol 1” part of its title suggests, the album  is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.  It will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition vinyl formats with the  first LP being released on transparent orange vinyl (limited to 700 copies) with a 4 page lyric booklet and an A2 poster.

ATROX ANNOUNCE NEW GUITARIST AND PORTUGUESE DATES

Norway’s ATROX, whose sixth full-length album “Monocle” was released on Dark Essence Records last year, have announced that they will be adding guitarist Steffen Berg to their lineup of Rune Folgerø on Vocals,  Eivind on Guitars, Rune Sørgård on Guitars & Technology, Erik Paulsen on Bass,  and Andreas Kjøl Berg on drums.

Although this won’t be his first appearance on stage with ATROX, Berg, who has played in bands such as TALRUSHA, CHILLTON JAMES, AFROCADABRA, 1001 and CP&TSTO (CONOR PATRICK & THE SHOOTING TSAR ORCHESTRA) will make his first appearance as an official member of the lineup on ATROX’s following three dates in Portugal, whilst Alessandro Elide will fill in for Andreas on drums:

In a statement from the band, guitarist Eivind explained the thinking behind the addition of  a new guitarist:

Since the complete band/line-up is located in 2 different locations (Rune S lives in Sweden and the rest of us in Trondheim, Norway),  there have been several occasions when we have found ourselves in dire need of a live (session) guitarist.  Last year, for instance,  we needed  a stand-in for Rune for our gig at ProgPower Europe, and we asked Steffen if he could step in – which he did, and he did a great job.   And, as some of us had worked with Steffen before on other musical projects, and  knowing what a great guitar player he is, the connection was already there.  

 We are also cognisant of  the fact that future ATROX gigs will most likely happen without Rune S, so we felt that now is the right time to including another member into the band.  We asked Steffen if he was interested in becoming a fulltime member, not only to play live, but also to join the creative side of ATROX, and, luckily for us, he said yes.

Steffen himself added:

I actually already knew most of the guys,  and when Rune F. asked me if I’d like to fill in as a live guitarist at Prog Power last year I knew it would be a lot of fun.  To my ears ATROX’s music has always sounded quite different from all the other bands around, and I really do believe they have developed something unique,  which I find very interesting.  It will be a blast writing and touring with these guys in the future!

About the track itself, the band had this to say:

“The World Belongs to Man” is the contemporary story of humankind and reflects where we find ourselves today as we begin to realise that our way of life is slowly killing the planet.  The song also express anger and frustration at not being able to stop this process, knowing that to be able to do so would require such radical political, economic and cultural changes that certain powerful people would lose both money and power in the process.

 Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA), Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums. Together  they fuse the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, and whose lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

Formed in 2005 by Kim Ljung  as a vehicle for material he didn’t think would be suitable for  either SEIGMEN or ZEROMANCER , bands for whom he is both the bassist and main songwriter, LJUNGBLUT eventually expanded from a solo project, which saw the release of three albums, into a fully fledged band.  Dan Heide (ZEROMANCER, RED7) on guitars, Ted Skogmann (APOPTYGMA BERZERK) on drums , Joakim Brendsrød on keys and Sindre Pedersen on bass, joined Ljung, on keys and vocals, and, as a quintet, the band released two independent albums with Norwegian lyrics.

When a band’s members all come from backgrounds as diverse as classical piano, electronica, prog and hard-rock, and if they manage to pull it all together in a consummate fashion to create a unique sound, you would be safe to guess that the band was Norway’s OAK.   And, with their latest full-length album “False Memory Archive” due out on Karisma Records on the 19th October,  the Pop/Rockers have released the title track as a single, about which they have this to say:

If you are somewhat loose with everyone’s  conception of what ‘Pop’ actually is, then  the track “False Memory Archive” is the album’s pop leitmotif,  which still unmistakably sounds like OAK.  It also happens to be the album’s title track and, as such, it serves as a kind of introduction to the theme of the whole album.  It is a song that appears  light and happy in its expression, but all the while it still contains its fair share of darkness

Since starting out as a folk-rock duo, and releasing their 2013 debut album “Lighthouse”, OAK’s lineup of Øystein Sootholtet (Bass, guitars, banjo, keys & programming), Simen Valldal Johannessen (vocals, piano, keys & lyrics), Sigbjørn Reiakvam (drums, percussion, programming & keys), Ole Michael Bjørndal (guitars) and Stephan Hvinden (guitars), have made considerable strides as both musicians and songwriters as their sophomore album demonstrates.

There is still a nod in the direction of the debut full-length, but “False Memory Archive” is both darker and groovier , whilst retaining that successful amalgam of sound that is neither wholly progressive pop, nor wholly progressive rock,  but which is absolutely trademark OAK  and is comprised of catchy elements and stunning vocal harmonies, which create that unique duality that defines them as a band.

Norwegian Blackgazers AVAST, whose debut full-length album “Mother Culture” is set to hit the streets on Dark Essence Records on the 26th October, have released a second single from the album, as well as an accompanying video by Ivar Vasstveit, about which the band has this to say:

“An Earnest Desire” is a tale about human ambition and how our desire to achieve great accomplishments often ends in catastrophe. The video emphasizes that ambition, and also shows how small and helpless we may appear in our interaction with nature and all of its forces.

“Introvert”, the third studio album from Norway’s SLEGEST,  is brimming over with the kind of tasty riffs and catchy hooks that reach out of the speakers and grab the attention  of classic heavy rock fans.  Combine that with the essence of Black Metal, and you get the unmistakable, genre-straddling, trademark SLEGEST sound.

With its release scheduled for the 16th November on Dark Essence Records, a second track from the album has been revealed.  Titled ” Blodets Varme Gjennom Meg”,  frontman and founder Ese describes the song as:

A soaring track of heavy rock with a grand finale. Perfect for driving. Lyrically it deals with intoxication, not as perfect for driving but very good for music and overall feeling in body and soul. For me the 80’s vibe is strong on this one, and it has nods to old Rush and even Åge Aleksandersen himself.

With cover artwork by Anders Røkkum,  the bass and vocals for “Introvert”  were recorded in Systrond and engineered by Ese.  Drums and guitars were recorded at the  Conclave and Earshot Studios in Bergen with  Bjørnar Erevik Nilsen engineering the drums,  whilst the guitars were engineered by Herbrand Larsen, who also mixed the album.  Iver Sandøy handled the mastering.

About the track, band founder Kim Ljung had this to say:

 It was just one of those days. An early morning.

I read somewhere about the twelve Hasselblad cameras left on the moon. Made some fresh coffee and locked myself into the studio without any particular ideas in my head.
In a few hours it was all there. Lyrics and everything. 

 A real special feeling when it happens. The guys loved the demo. A few weeks later we rehearsed “Hasselblad” as a band, keeping it close to the original idea. Of course, Ted added  a real great drum-pattern. It was only just over a 2-minute arrangement though.

Right after I wrote it, I was visting Erik Ljunggren in his studio. Blown away by the collection of modular and vintage synthesizers, I asked him if he wanted to contribute for the end part. The Arp 2600 and the Oberheim Matrix creating most of the magic. All analogue. It was perfect.

The drums, the bass, the guitar (with the Morley flanger pedal), the Omni and the Roland strings were all recorded live. I believe it was the third take.

Ljungblut Hasselblad artwork PR

When he formed LJUNGBLUT  in 2005, Ljung was looking for a vehicle for the material he didn’t think was right for either SEIGMEN or ZEROMANCER, for whom he is the bassist and main songwriter.  Three solo albums later, LJUNGBLUT evolved further with the addition of full-time members, some of whom had collaborated on LJUNGBLUT’s  first two albums.  Joining Ljung (keys and vocals) are Dan Heide (ZEROMANCER, RED7) on guitars, Ted Skogmann (APOPTYGMA BERZERK) on drums , Joakim Brendsrød on keys and Sindre Pedersen on bass, and, as a quintet, the band released two independent albums with Norwegian lyrics.

“Villa Carlotta 5959”, which will be LJUNGBLUT’s sixth full-length album, is the last in the trilogy of the Norwegian language albums.  It is an album in which Ljung explores matters both historical and personal.  Whilst tracks like “Hasselblad”, about the 12 Hasselblad cameras left behind on the surface of the Moon, and “Superga”, which refers to the province of Turin, Italy, best known for  its Cathedral and the plane crash that killed the Torino football team in 1949, deal with actual events and places, tracks like “Min Krig” (My war) and “Aldri helt stille” (Never completely quiet), are much more personal, dealing, as they do, with Ljung’s chronic migraines.

The basis of “Villa Carlotta 5959” having been recorded live in the studio and mixed by Alex Møklebust (SEIGMEN / ZEROMANCER) and Terje Johannesen, Ljung’s characteristic vocals are embraced  by a plethora of vintage synths and instruments.  With its wide range of tempos and dynamics,  “Villa Carlotta 5959” presents the listeners with a cohesive sound and a melancholy mood.

EXPERIMENTAL POST METALLERS KRAKOW REVEAL NEW VIDEO

Their latest album “minus” may have been released at the end of last month, but Norway’s Experimental Post Metallers KRAKOW still have a few surprises left in store for their fans. as today they release a brand new video for a track from the album.

The video, which is for “tidlaus”, the closing track on the album, was filmed in the studio whilst KRAKOW were recording  “minus”.  As the band explains:  “We record the basics live, then we lay down the rest.  The song itself is inspired by Warduna and Death in Vegas – a typical Krakow song except for the ending.  Calm, mellow, eerie and powerful”.

“minus” was recorded in the famous Duper and Solslottet studios in the Bergen Kjøtt creative complex, in collaboration, once more, with Iver Sandøy.  It is, effectively,  two albums-worth of material distilled into one, very focussed, gem.  According  to the band, “minus” is “the pinnacle of achievement of KRAKOW’s thirteen-year existence, representing the bare essence of who KRAKOW are as individuals, as a group, and as story tellers.  It defies any attempts at genre definition, and covers the heavy, the subtle, the melodic, the atonal, the groovy, the sluggish, the dense, the airy, the naked, and always, always, that wall of sound from whence no light can escape”.
