It will also be available to watch on YouTube after the live event.

“Wide Awake but Still Asleep”, which hits the street on Karisma Records today, 29th May, is the second full-length album from the Norwegians, whose 2016 debut album “Crystals” brought them to the attention of Prog fans world-wide, who were impressed not only by the band’s studio output, but also by their live performances,  and their skill at  blending  60s and 70s psychedelia with progressive rock.

Produced by ENSLAVED’s  Iver Sandøy  at the Solslottet Studio, and with cover design by Maja Markegård and photography by Tom Wøbbekind, track listing for “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is as follows:

  1. Wide Awake but Still Asleep
  2. H.M.S. Death, Rattle and Roll
  3. Steely Dan
  4. Ease of Mind
  5. Magnets
  6. Traveller
  7. Strange Illusions

The band, whose  lineup  comprises Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen on vocals and guitar, Jard Hole on drums, Ole-Andreas Sæbø Jensen on  bass, and Jonas Særsten on keyboards,  have lost none of that SHAMAN ELPHANT charm for which they are known, but they have reached a new maturity in terms of  their song writing and playing, as well as having developed a greater focus on who they are and what they want from their music.   Commenting recently on “Wide Awake but Still Asleep”,  the band had this to say:

With this album we feel like we have found out who we want to be as a band. Whilst the first album was going in all directions, this album feels more focused and mature. “Wide Awake but Still Asleep” is our attempt at making the melodies move like butterflies while the grooves sting like killer bees.

Ruphus_InnerVoice PR2

RUPHUS’ fourth full-length album “Inner Voice” hits the streets today on Karisma records in what is the label’s mission to release all six albums from the legendary Prog Rockers.  The album joins the previously released “New Born Day”, “Ranshart” and  “Let Your Light Shine”, leaving a further two, “Flying Colours” and “Manmade”,  whose release later this year will complete this exceptional set.

Once again produced by the legendary Terje Rypdal ,  “Inner Voice” saw the arrival of new members Sylvi Lillegaard on vocals and Jan Simonsen on keyboards,  whose presence  introduced fresh blood and musical influences to RUPHUS who had, by now, relocated to Germany following the massive success of the band’s previous release “Let Your Light Shine”.

As with all the re-releases in the series, “Inner Voice” has been mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo  (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc) and offers the fans a prime example of the Norwegian Proggy Jazz Rock genre of the ’70’s. It is the album that firmly cemented the band’s reputation as one of the leading lights on the European Jazz Rock Scene.

With cover design by Jan Ole Norum and cover photo by Kim Hart, track listing for “Inner Voice” is as follows:

  1. Inner Voice
  2. Come Into View
  3. No Deal
  4. Too Late
  5. Within The Walls
  6. Left Behind

“Inner Voice” is available in CD, black vinyl and a 250 copy limited edition in transparent blue vinyl from all the usual retailers or directly from https://www.karismarecords.no/artists/ruphus/

A versatile and ground-breaking band, RUPHUS, with their long, melodic, compositions,  and multiple, intertwined themes, were regarded as being the Norwegian equivalent of YES, not just in style, but also in skill.   The band’s revolving door policy as regards their lineup meant that, as members left and others joined, RUPHUS’ sound changed accordingly,  taking them from their early days playing hard progressive rock, to becoming one of the leaders in the field of jazz rock. Only Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) would go on to play on all of RUPHUS’ albums.

Arabs in Aspic PR2

The title track from “Madness and Magic”, the upcoming album from Prog Rockers ARABS IN ASPIC,  is the song that Karisma Records have chosen to release as a single today.   Drawing their inspiration for both the title and subject matter from EDGAR BROUGHTON, the band had this to say about the track:

“Madness and Magic” is a description of how helpless one becomes when suffering from serious illness. Putting one’s life in the hands of others is frightening, especially when so heavily medicated that the boundary between reality and fiction is blurred. It gets particularly bad when it turns out the expertise is unable to relate to the human aspect of the situation. The song was written after a meeting with Doctor Death, who clearly was affected by working with people on their last journey.

The single, “Madness and Magic” can be streamed or downloaded at https://fanlink.to/Arabs_Madness

Based in Trondheim, Norway, ARABS IN ASPIC is a band with a lineup that has both the skill and musical knowledge to perform a variety of styles, ranging from classic rock to funk, pop, prog, heavy rock, bossanova and  a capella, all rooted in what is known as the “Golden Era” of rock.

Jostein Smeby on Guitars + vocals, Stig Jørgensen on Organs + vocals, Erik Paulsen on Bass + vocals, Eskil Nyhus on Drums + cymbals and Alessandro G. Elide on Percussion + gongs,  are an ensemble who create a distinctive sound that is best described as a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70’s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies.

Arabs in Aspic PR3

“Madness and Magic” will be the seventh full-length album from the Prog Rockers, and recently the band let fans know more about what went into making it, and the subject matter:

“Madness and Magic”  is the first Arabs in Aspic album written for two drummers, with more acoustic guitar parts than previous albums. All the music was written and arranged in our studio and carefully put together like a puzzle with 50,000 pieces, to take the listener on a journey through life’s “Madness and Magic”, both musically and lyrically.

The lyrics for “Madness and Magic” reflect on how easily both children and adults are affected in the digital age, but also how helpless we are when we have to put our lives in the hands of specialists. Many ideas came up after a brief meeting with Doctor Death. The message of “Madness and Magic” is up to the listener to decide. For you are capable of thinking for yourself, right?

With ethereal artwork by Julia Proszowska, tracklisting for the “Madness and Magic” is as follows:

  1. I Vow to Thee, My Screen
  2. Lullaby for Modern Kids, Part 1
  3. Lullaby for Modern Kids, Part 2
  4. High-Tech Parent
  5. Madness and Magic
  6. Heaven in Your Eye

Airbag 2020 PR4

Karisma Records have given fans of AIRBAG another insight into the Prog Rockers long-awaited new album “A Day at the Beach” with the release of the single “Sunsets”, about which the band says:

Sunsets was written during the early stages of making the new album. We spent a lot of time trying different arrangements and just jamming together, which was something we hadn’t done for a while. We brought in Kristian Hultgren from Wobbler on bass and Ole Michael Bjørndal from Oak on guitar and they both contributed to the arrangements. As with the first single, Machines and Men, Sunsets has that contrast between hard edge rock and electronic elements, which is something we’ve tried to achieve throughout this album. The lyrics deal with the destructive forces of our lives and our society, perhaps underlining the overall theme of the album.

“Sunsets” can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Airbag_Sunsets

“A Day at the Beach” is the fifth full-length from the band that has been hailed as one of the most important bands to emerge from the Norwegian Prog scene since its formation in the mid 2000’s, and whose lineup today includes AIRBAG’s two original founding members Asle Tostrup on vocals and Bjørn Riis on guitars, with Henrik Bergan Fossum on drums.

Airbag 2020 PR1

AIRBAG have always been able to blend diverse musical styles and sounds, something they combine with a strong narrative experience, and, for “A Day at the Beach, the trio’s signature guitar driven progressive rock has been enhanced by ethereal soundscapes, resulting in  a stunning selection of songs that reveal  a now-mature band building on its already impressive legacy.

With six new songs recorded during the  autumn and winter of 2019-20, and inspired  by the resurgence of 1980’s electronica, new wave and movie scores, “A Day at the Beach” will be AIRBAG’s first as a trio and the band recently had this to say about the album:

The album is the result of a strong collaboration between all three of us. Having lost two original members since our last album, we were forced to rethink how we write and create new music, but it also allowed us to venture into something new that turned out to be very inspiring.

Lyrically, “A Day at the Beach” is very much a story of us and them, told by a husband, father and brother leaving his family behind into an unknown future. It’s the contrast between the desperate individual struggling to survive and people in power observing at a safe distance.

A Day at the Beach” is mixed by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes. Jacob Holm-Lupo has mastered the album, and Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis handled the production side.   With  cover design, as always, by vocalist Tostrup.   Track listing for “A Day at the Beach” is as follows:

1. Machines and Men
2. A Day at the Beach (Part 1)
3. Into the Unknown
4. Sunsets
5. A Day at the Beach (Part 2)
6. Megalomaniac

According to the band, the song ” describes the fascination and fear of our addiction to being entertained. The lyrics are heavily inspired by the British patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, my Country,” written by Cecil Spring-Rice in 1918″.

“I Vow to Thee, My Screen” can be streamed or downloaded from a number of different services at  https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/arabsinaspic

Airbag 2020 PR4

Four years since the release of “Disconnected”,  Prog Rockers AIRBAG are set to release their fifth full-length album.  Titled “A Day at the Beach”, the album will be released on the 19th June on Karisma Records, and today the label has given the band’s many fans a taste of what they can look forward to by releasing a track from the album.

The track is titled “Machines and Men”, and  AIRBAG describe it thus:  “This was one of the very first songs written for the album. The initial demo was basically just guitars, drums and vocals and during a period of working in the studio, rehearsing,  and playing the song live, it slowly evolved into something new and fresh that defined most of the material we were working on. The lyrics describe the facts of war in a cold and objective fashion, only to turn to the spectator  with a warning and a chance to look away“.

“Machines and Men” can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/airbag_machines-and-men

Hailed as one of the most important bands to emerge from the Norwegian prog scene over the past decades, AIRBAG  was formed in the mid 2000’s by five high school class mates, which included two of today’s members Asle Tostrup (vocals) and Bjørn Riis (guitars).  AIRBAG is a band that is able to blend diverse musical styles and sounds, with a strong narrative listening experience. Today’s lineup also includes Henrik Bergan Fossum (drums) and “A Day at the Beach” will be AIRBAG’s first album as a trio, and will also feature talented guest musicians including WOBBLER’s Kristian Hultgren.

Featuring  six new songs recorded during the  autumn and winter of 2019-20, and inspired  by the resurgence of 1980s electronica, new wave and movie scores, “A Day at the Beach” sees AIRBAG  creating a powerful sound combining ethereal soundscapes with their signature guitar driven progressive rock.  The result is a stunning selection of songs revealing a mature band looking forward from its already impressive legacy.

Once again teaming up with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes, “A Day at the Beach” was mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo and  produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis. Cover design, is, as always, by vocalist Tostrup.   Track listing for “A Day at the Beach” is as follows:

1. Machines and Men
2. A Day at the Beach (Part 1)

Madder Mortem New PR

First released on Misanthropy Records back in 1999, and unavailable for many years, MADDER MORTEM’s debut full-length album “Mercury” is getting a brand new lease of life via Dark Essence Records, who will be releasing a re-vamped version to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its release.

However, since neither MADDER MORTEM nor Dark Essence Records have been known to do things by  halves, this will not simply be a straight forward re-release, but will include five new tracks, especially recorded by the band,  three of which are from the original album, but which have been re-imagined and re-arranged in a more contemporary manner, and two of which are brand new songs composed using old, Mercury-era, riffs.

The album, with its highly original mix of prog, gothic and doom metal has been re-mastered by Peter In de Betou .  Unlike  many of its contemporary releases, “Mercury”  sounds as fresh and original today as it did 20 years ago, and, to give the legion of MADDER MORTEM fans a taste of what to expect,  Dark Essence Records have released a first single from the album.

The single “He Who Longed For The Stars” (2019 re-recording) can be streamed or downloaded from https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/MadderMortem_He-Who-Longed

With stunning new artwork by the renowned Romanian artist and Dark Essence label-mate Costin Chiorieanu,  “Mercury” will hit the streets on the 6th September in CD, Digital and Vinyl formats, and the Vinyl edition will come as a package which will include the full CD.   “Mercury” is now available to pre-order from the following:

CD, LP, Digital: https://maddermortem.bandcamp.com/album/mercury-20th-anniversary-version
CD, LP: https://www.darkessencerecords.no/artists/madder-mortem/

Track listing on “Mercury” is as follows:

  1. Undertow
  2. Under Another Moon
  3. He Who Longed For The Stars
  4. These Mortal Sins
  5. The Grinding Silence
  6. Loss
  7. Remnants
  8. Misty Sleep

    Bonus tracks:

  11. The Grinding Silence (2019 re-recording)
  12. Remnants (2019 re-recording)
  13. Shadows Coming Home
  14. Vigil

Madder Mortem Mercury PR

And, if all that were not enough, the Madders have also planned a very special Anniversary show  which is set to take place the day after the album’s release, at the Parkteatret in Oslo, Norway,  on the 7th September.   As the band recently explained:

We are bringing the former members of Madder Mortem back to the stage, to share the different eras with you all, as well as some surprise guests. We’ve chosen a set list that includes some fan favourites and some very rarely heard songs, as well as some of the bonus tracks from the re-release. The outstanding Costin Chioreanu is creating original paintings for songs from the set, and the filmed creation of those paintings will add a stunning visual element to the show. Costin will also exhibit his original paintings at the show, to give you a close look at his visual interpretation of the Madder music. And there might be more surprises along the way.

Tickets for the Anniversary show are available from https://www.ticketmaster.no/event/612291 and further information can be found on the Facebook Event at https://business.facebook.com/events/388578165086331/

Magic Pie PR

The long-awaited fifth full-length album from Norwegian Prog Rockers MAGIC PIE is on its way.  Titled “Fragments of the 5th Element”  it is set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 30th of August  in CD, Gatefold LP and Digital formats.

“Fragments of the 5th Element”  finds MAGIC PIE steering clear of the sterile perfection so often found amongst modern Prog bands  in order to create an album with a slightly more unpolished sound, and  a “rough around the edges” feel  that gives it an added bite.  From the genre-defying opener, to the  epic 23 minute closer, MAGIC PIE clearly demonstrate just why they have become a household name amongst Prog Rock fans, and why this album has been worth the long wait.

Mixed & Mastered by Rich Mouser (SPOCKS BEARD, TRANSATLANTIC)  at The Mouse House Studio in Los Angeles, drums for “Fragments of the 5th Element”  were recorded at Lionheart Studio & Production, where Øyvind Voldmo Larsen also worked his magic as engineer.  All other recordings were made at Kim Stenberg’s Studio Basement.

With artwork and design by Kim Stenberg, based on original paintings by Eva Stenberg, tracklisting on “Fragments of the 5th Element”  is as follows:

1 – The Man Who Had It All
2 – P & C
3 – Table For Two
4 – Touched By An Angel
5 – The Hedonist

Norwegian Prog Rockers  JORDSJØ are back with “Nattfiolen”, an album filled with acoustic guitars, flutes, tape echo, analogue synths and Hammond organ.  Warm and dreamy, “Nattfiolen” reflects the band’s longing for a simpler life close to nature, and an imaginary past where life is centered around music.

And today Karisma Records have released a single from the album that perfectly illustrates the folk-inspired Symphonic Prog, one could almost say Forest Prog, that typifies  JORDSJØ’s musical output.   The single, for the track “Stifinner” can be streamed or downloaded at  https://orcd.co/stifinner

Led by multi-instrumentalist Håkon Oftung (ex-Tusmørke), JORDSJØ was formed in Oslo in 2014, and is a band that draws its inspiration from old horror movies, German 70s Synth music, Swedish Prog, fantasy novels and Norwegian nature.  So much so, in fact, that when, just over a year ago, JORDSJØ first spoke about “Nattfiolen”, they referred to it as “a kind of Intermezzo that will explore more deeply the mysticism that surrounds the forest”.

“Nattfiolen” is the follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed debut “Jord”.   Recorded and mixed in JORDSJØ’s  own studio, “Nattfiolen” is mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc.) at the Dude Ranch Studio.

With cover art by Sindre Foss Skancke and band photos by Anne-Marie Forker, track listing for “Nattfiolen” is as follows:

  1. Ouverture
  2. Stifinner
  3. Solens Sirkulære Sang
  4. Septemberbål
  5. Mine Templer II
  6. Til Våren
  7. Ulvenatt
