Having recently confirmed that “Dawn of Oberon” the upcoming album  from Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE is set for release on the 30th August, Karisma Records have released a track from the album, which, as always with this group of musicians, features mystical beings who don’t quite fit the image  that we’ve come to know through countless fairy tales.

In this case that being is a “Dwarven Lord” as the title suggests, and as the band explains:

Oberon and Titania pop up in the pastures of the Norwegian cultural landscape! Though dwarven, it is not the size of the synth that matters as we enter the soundscape of certain natural Norwegian influences. This track pays homage to Tyrannosaurus Rex, Joe Meek, Shakespeare and Purcell. Talk about high culture for lowbrows!

“Dwarven Lord” can be downloaded or streamed on a number of services at

https://orcd.co/dwarvenlord

As to the album itself, “Dawn of Oberon” sweeps us off on a subterranean expedition to the Kingdom of the Fair Folk and is described by TUSMØRKE as a “manifestation of our Peter Pan syndrome, with our aesthetics and ideals having remained unchanged for the last 25 years”.

Once again the highly acclaimed Norwegian artist Sverre Malling has provided the artwork for the album, and tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Dawn of Oberon
  2. Born to be mild
  3. Dwarven Lord
  4. Midsommernattsdrøm
  5. People View
  6. Troll Male

“Dawn of Oberon” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition Milky Clear Vinyl formats and can be pre-ordered now at:

Having released twelve albums in twelve years TUSMØRKE are not only prolific, they are also highly imaginative, with their work ranging from the creation of entire worlds, to concept-based trilogies aimed at younger music fans.  Their (occasionally risqué) creations, combined with the band’s musical prowess and their lyrical themes, beguile the listener, whilst inserting a cleverly disguised commentary about the times in which we live.

TUSMØRKE is band whose joie de vivre translates extremely well into live performances, and fans will be able to witness it for themselves when the current lineup of Herjekongen on Keyboards, Brennesle on Drums, Krizla on  Flute and vocals, and Benediktator on Bass and Vocals, hit the stage on the following dates (more to come).

Twelve albums in twelve years! We could only be talking about Norway’s Psychedelic Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE, whose output is not only prolific, but also original and fantastical. It ranges from concept based trilogies aimed at young music fans, to the creation of entire worlds (some, you might say, even a little on the naughty side) that beguile audiences with both their music and their lyrical themes. Themes that frequently contain cleverly disguised serious messages about the times in which we live.

So what does TUSMØRKE have in store for us with their twelfth full-length album?  Well the title “Dawn of Oberon” offers up quite a large hint that some kind of mystical realm is involved, and indeed, this time we are swept off on a subterranean expedition to the Kingdom of the Fair Folk.

And the thinking behind it? Best if we allow TUSMØRKE to describe it in their own  way:

“Dawn of Oberon”  is a manifestation of our Peter Pan syndrome, with our aesthetics and ideals having remained unchanged for the last 25 years.

This time we go away with the fairies all together, to the far-away land of the far-out mind. Never grow up, just grow old.

Once again the highly acclaimed Norwegian artist Sverre Malling has provided the artwork for the album, which is set for release on the 30th August.

Tracklisting for “Dawn of Oberon” is as follows:

  1. Dawn of Oberon
  2. Born to be mild
  3. Dwarven Lord
  4. Midsommernattsdrøm
  5. People View
  6. Troll Male

The actual recording of the album was not exactly straightforward (actually, is anything ever straightforward with TUSMØRKE?) As the band explains:

This album  is a testament to a tumultuous time. It was 2022 and we had a new drummer, Kusken, and keyboard player, Herjekongen, and we immediately started working on the epic that was to become “Dawn of Oberon”.  This behemoth had been wallowing about since the start of the millennium, never quite finding its shape and form.

We thought of this as a trial by fire that would galvanize the new members, and, during jams at rehearsals and concerts, new themes emerged, resulting in a sort of sequel in the form of Dusk of Tawblerawn part 1-5. Kusken decided to quit after just 8 months, but agreed to document the time we had spent together. All the music was recorded in our rehearsal space and studio in 2022-2023.

TUSMØRKE ‘s last three concept-based releases delighted the legion of young music fans at which they were aimed (as well as a sizeable portion of grownups too). But now, the prolific Norwegian Psychedelic Prog Folk Rockers are back again, ready to unleash their anarchic brand of music on their adult fans with an eleventh full-length album titled “Hestehoven” that is definitely not for the faint hearted.

With “Hestehoven” TUSMØRKE have created a strange Fairyland where Satyrs and Nymphs indulge in brazen Bacchanals, and the unwary stranger is sucked into chance encounters with mildew-encrusted adult magazines that can be found carefully stashed away in the shrubs, and which are nothing short of erotic mysteries reminiscent of ancient fertility cults.

It is a world from which there is no turning back once you step on that wretched path that is fraught with danger and temptation.  Warlocks cackle and witches blush,  and a wise priest, who can see beyond the Lord’s Prayer, binds Old Eric to his bidding.

Due out on the 18th of August, fans have been given a first glimpse into the “Mysteries” of the album with the release of the track “The Cycle of the Gylfaginning”, about which the band says:

As it begins, so it will end; from destruction new creations arise. In the turning wheel of  the seasons, all things take their turn again and again, take after take after take. There is no final take. After Ragnarok, life rolls on. Like the cycle of vegetation, Osiris, Balder or Jesus disappear to reappear. At the bottom of religion there is recycling.

“The Cycle of the Gylfaginning” can be streamed or downloaded from a variety of sources at

https://link.karismarecords.no/Tusmorke_Cycle-of-the-Gylfaginning

Named after the flower Coltsfoot “Hestehoven” is an album that seems to spring from the Underworld both in sound, with its chthonic aspects, as well as in its conceptual undertones,  allowing the listeners to hum along as they witness a devil’s pact whilst peering through the keyhole of the local church. Or maybe rock out whilst riding a dog backwards, all the way to the witches’ Sabbath.

The artwork for “Hestehoven” has been specially commissioned from the highly acclaimed Norwegian artist Sverre Malling, and the track listing is as follows:

  1. Cycle of the Gylfaginning
  2. Hestehoven
  3. Den behornede guden
  4. Åndemaneren
  5. Jeg klumser deg
  6. Kyprianos
  7. The Wicked Ways of Witches and Wizards

“Hestehoven” will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition Vinyl with 4 page Lyric Booklet  formats and can now be pre-ordered from:

US Webshop: https://karismarecords.indiemerch.com

Life is never just sunshine and rainbows with  TUSMØRKE, whose name means twilight in Norwegian, and it is never more true than with “Hestehoven”.  However, what is true is that the band got it right when they say that the album is:

True Norwegian finger-clicking, butt-swinging. prog rock. No more, no less – but cerebral in excess! Spring has sprung! If it is all too much to bear, close your eyes and think about the flowers. Hail Pan.

With the release of TUSMØRKE’S latest album “Intetnett”  scheduled for the 7th October, Karisma Records have today revealed a second single what will be the third album from the anarchic band that is aimed primarily at children.

Taking as its theme story of  two evil scientists who plant a self-teaching system called Intetnett onto the computers of an unsuspecting school, and which then proceeds to take control of an ant colony living in the school kitchen by using electronic impulses.   The system soon jumps from the ants, to human hosts, taking over the minds of both pupils and teachers.  Except of course, the minds of those who do not quite “fit in”, namely one of the teachers who is a technophobe, and a substitute teacher who does not yet have the necessary login info to access the computers, along with a small group of pupils.

The track chosen for the new single is a piece with an almost disco-beat  titled “Maurenes Jenka”  in which the band invite you to:

Lose yourself in the crowd and forget yourself to the enticing rhythms of the jenka dance! The ants invite you to a wonderful party game where everyone jumps in time. Get in line, this dance is easy enough for even father to join in.

You can download or stream “Maurenes Jenka”  from a number of services at https://link.karismarecords.no/Tusmorke_Maurenes-Jenka

The thing about  TUSMØRKE is that while they may aim some of their albums at children, and entertaining though those albums may be, the band also has a serious message to impart to its adult listeners. And, by introducing a fascinating mix of subjects ranging from  artificial intelligence, to advancements in technology, to the Singularity, and  Mesopotamian gods,  TUSMØRKE reminds us all of our old, long-forgotten histories.

In fact, “Intetnett” serves as a warning about the direction mankind is taking with technology, where our world is becoming a totalitarian nightmare where no one thinks for themselves, no one dreams anymore, and human culture itself is in peril. But all in not lost, because, long-ignored by humans, and consequently fading away, the old Mesopotamian Gods want to help humankind regain its freedom, and the only way to do so is by using Magic – better known as the old technology from a bygone era.

Enter our misfit heroes – the Norwegian teacher, the substitute and the children, who are given instructions on how to summon a Golem, a creature of legend that will be able to confront, and hopefully defeat,  Intetnett, thereby  pulling the plug on the dangerous computers.

Written for, and first performed at, the Aktivitetsskolen Nordstrand,  “Intetnett” is actually comprised of  two original musicals – “Intetnett” and “Når Enden er Golem” and will quite possible be the band’s final children’s release. It was recorded  at Det Ytre Rommet, Holy Space! and the Nordstrand Skole by a lineup that includes Benediktator (bass, vocals, guitars, synths, percussion, whistling), Krizla (flute, vocals, piano, synths, percussion) and HlewagastiR (drums).

With artwork by the legendary Norwegian artist Thore Hansen, “Intetnett” features a  whopping total of 21 tracks and  will be available in CD, Digital, and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, the latter of which will come with a 12-page lyric booklet.

Tracklisting as follows:

  1. Satt i system                                      12. Den nye tida
  2. Det beste for budsjettet                    13. Synth etisk
  3. Han er litterær                                  14. Kunstig uintelligens
  4. Varslerduett                                      15. Gudenes krig
  5. Vikaren                                              16. Verdensarvingen
  6. Jakelstigen                                         17. Enki Dumuzi Absu (CD only)
  7. Vi drikker ikke melk                       18. Før flommen
  8. Vi er elever                                        19. Enkis sang
  9. Maurenes Jenka                              20. Golem
  10. Undringstimen (CD only)              21. Kontakten brytes

“Irrepressible” is a word that springs to mind when describing Norway’s Psychedelic  Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE, who will be back in October of this year with “Intetnett”, which will be their third, and quite possibly, final, album directed towards a younger audience.

But whether their albums are aimed at children or adults, TUSMØRKE are never content to just entertain, something they do consummately well, they also want to remind their audience of old, long-forgotten histories, and on “Intetnett” this is exactly what they do, with a fascinating mix of subjects ranging from  artificial intelligence, to advancements in technology, to the Singularity, and, of course,  ancient Mesopotamian gods

“Intetnett” tells the  story of  two evil scientists who plant a self-teaching system onto the computers of an unsuspecting school. The system is called Intetnett, and,  via  the use of electronic impulses, it takes  control of  an ant colony living in the school kitchen.  Needless to say, it also soon takes over the minds of pupils and teachers alike.  The minds of everyone, that is,  except for a technophobic Norwegian teacher, a substitute teacher without login info, and a small group of pupils.

With the world  slowly slipping into a totalitarian nightmare where no one thinks for themselves, no one dreams anymore, and human culture itself is in peril,  there is someone who is missing the humans! Down in the deepest depths, the old Mesopotamian gods are fading due to the lack of human attention,  and they want to help humankind to regain its freedom.

But the only thing that can stop Intetnett is technology from a bygone era – in other words,  Magic! Thus the Norwegian teacher, the substitute and the children are given instructions on how to summon a Golem, a creature of legend that will be able to confront, and hopefully defeat,  Intetnett, thereby  pulling the plug on the dangerous computers.

And, as an introduction to the album, Karisma Records have today released the track “Den nye tida”, which can be downloaded or streamed from a variety of services via https://orcd.co/tusmorke_den-nye-tida

“Intetnett”, which Karisma Records will release on the 7th October, is actually comprised of  two original musicals “Intetnett” and “Når Enden er Golem”,  which were written for, and first performed at, the Aktivitetsskolen Nordstrand in 2017/2018.

They’re back. Norway’s most unique and anarchic Psychedelic Folk Rock Proggers TUSMØRKE are back with a brand new album.  And not just any album because “Nordisk Krim” is the fulfilment of a dream as old as TUSMØRKE itself.

As the band explains:

When we formed in 1994, there was a plan to record a concept album about Danish bog bodies. As children, we visited the museums of Moesgaard and Silkeborg, transfixed by the sight of the black bodies with orange hair. Shortly after, we discovered heavy metal. Funny how you can love a genre from the age of 7 and still never learn how to play it.

Or, to quote Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle”:

“Metal is from the earth, he thought as he scrutinized. From below: from that realm which is the lowest, the most dense. Land of trolls and caves, dank, always dark. Yin world, in its most melancholy aspect. World of corpses, decay and collapse. Of faeces. All that has died, slipping and disintegrating back down layer by layer. The daemonic world of the immutable; the time-that-was.”

The title Nordisk Krim (Nordic Crime) refers to the fact that the bog bodies were first thought to be a police matter. In reality, the true crime was disturbing the gifts to the gods in their slumber. Nordisk Krim celebrates the willing victims of ancient rites, those whose bodies are in the bog but whose souls are among the stars in the heavens.

So get ready for a taste of this epic double album because today Karisma Records have released “Age of Iron Man” a single and video taken from the album.

The “Age of Iron Man” single can be streamed or downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/ageofironman

Whilst the video can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/Xj-BA1hURB8

The band had this to say about “Age of Iron Man”

Age of Iron Man celebrates ancient rites of pagan Denmark. Elite members  of society would travel to the world of the gods beyond the bog, never  to return. Or would they? Killed thrice by knife, blunt instrument and  rope, submerged in sacred ponds, the bog bodies slept through the  centuries, skin tanned black, hair dyed orange. When they were dug up,  police sought their killers, only to realize they were 1500 years too  late.

For Norwegians, Denmark has always been the  promised land; a place of plenty, of freedom, of rock’n’roll and red  hotdogs. Denmark manages to be the smaller country and yet the older  brother; hip, cool and always closer to Germany than, say Sweden. The  sacrificial cult of the goddess Nerthus was documented by the travelling  historian Gaius Tacitus in 98 and has had a strong pull on
Norwegian  minds ever since. To go to Denmark and lose your worries, your  inhibitions and your head is a trip that never gets old.

The lineup on “Nordisk Krim”  includes  Benediktator (bass & vocals), Krizla (flute & vocals), HlewagastiR (drums), Haugebonden Gode Gullstein (keys) and Åsa Ree (violin), Everything was recorded and produced in Benedikator’s home studio (Det Ytre Rommet), except field recordings and some bubble noises recorded in the bathtub (The Bubble Bath of Blood).

With artwork by Anne Margrete Sjøflot, track listing on “Nordisk Krim”, which is a double concept album coming in at a whopping 82 minutes is as follows:

  1. Ride the Whimbrel
  2. Age of Iron Man
  3. Mumia
  4. Cauldron Bog
  5. Dog’s Flesh
  6. Moss Goddess
  7. Black Incubation
  8. Et Moselik
  9. Heksejakt
  10. (The Marvellous and Murderous) Mysteries of Sacrifice

“Nordisk Krim” is set for release on the 26th February 2021, will be available in Double CD, and Double LP in transparent magenta vinyl (limited to 666 copies) as well as in Digital formats.  It can be pre-ordered at:

Karisma Records have today released a second single from “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne”, the upcoming album from Norwegian Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE.

The single, for the track “Sjubidubidu Sju”, which,  according to TUSMØRKE is “A funky number about the number seven, centred around an old dance (and character in the story) called Per Sjuspring”, can be streamed or downloaded at  https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Tusmorke_Sjubidubidu_Sju

tusmorke Sjubidubidu sju ArtworkPR

“Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne”, which translated means “Games for children, rituals for adults” is based on two musicals for children, “The Bridge to the Other Side” and “The Root of All Evil”, and consists partly of  Tusmørke’s take on traditional Norwegian children’s songs,  and partly on new material by the  band.

Noted for its eccentricity, and not shy about trying new and unusual things, TUSMØRKE is quite happy to admit about “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” that  “Not everyone who took part in the plays completely understood what they were doing. Neither did everyone in the audience.  But here it is, in all its gory glory as the collegium of dashing adventurers and explorers of the unknown reaches of history, known to the unwashed masses under the pseudonym TUSMØRKE, have yet again brought fresh fever from the stars”.

“Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is set for release on the 29th November, and will be available in CD, Digital, Black Vinyl and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, all of which include a 16 page lyric booklet, which, according to the band, “May, or may not, explain the plot”.

With artwork by Thore Hansen, track listing for “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is as follows:

  1. Bro bro brille                         9. Velkommen til Hades
  2. Per Sjuspring                        10. Kharons vise
  3. Kjerringa med staven         11. På den ytterste nakne øya
  4. Ta den ring                            12. Jeg gikk meg over sjø og land
  5. Tornerose                              13. Den tolvte Baal
  6. Bjørnen sover                       14. Gamlas seierssang
  7. På Torneroses slot               15. Eventyret er ute
  8. Sjubidubidu Sju                   16. Du og jeg og vi to

Understated is definitely not an adjective that can be applied to Norwegian Prog Folk Rockers TUSMØRKE whose latest album “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is set for release on Karisma Records on the 29th November.

Based on two musicals for children, “The Bridge to the Other Side” and “The Root of All Evil”, “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne”, which translated means “Games for children, rituals for adults”, consists partly of  Tusmørke’s take on traditional Norwegian children’s songs,  and partly on new material by the  band. And, whilst waiting for its release, Karisma Records have lifted the veil on what we can expect, by releasing a single from the album.

The single, with artwork by the legendary Thore Hansen, happens to be the opening track “Bro bro brille” and it can be streamed and downloaded at https://karismarecords.fanlink.to/Tusmorke_Bro_Bro_Brille

The album itself will be available in CD, Digital, Black Vinyl and Limited Edition White Vinyl formats, all of which include a 16 page lyric booklet, which, according to the band, “May, or may not, explain the plot”.

With artwork by Thore Hansen, track listing for “Leker for barn, ritualer for voksne” is as follows:

  1. Bro bro brille                      9. Velkommen til Hades
  2. Per Sjuspring                     10. Kharons vise
  3. Kjerringa med staven      11. På den ytterste nakne øya
  4. Ta den ring                         12.Jeg gikk meg over sjø og land
  5. Tornerose                           13. Den tolvte Baal
  6. Bjørnen sover                    14. Gamlas seierssang
  7. På Torneroses slot            15. Eventyret er ute
  8. Sjubidubidu Sju                16. Du og jeg og vi to

TUSMØRKE’s lineup is drawn  from bands like WOBBLER, JORDSJØ and ALWANZATAR, and, in keeping with the band’s innate eccentricity, the variety of instruments they have at their command is staggering, with Benediktator on Bass, vocals, Glockenspiel and percussion, Krizla on Flute, vocals, electronics and percussion,  The Phenomenon Marxo Solinas on Minimoog Model D, Korg CX3, William de Blaise on harpsichord, Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, Mellotron M400, Hammond C3, Wurlitzer 200 and Solina String Ensemble, and HlewagastiR on Drums and percussion.

The band  happily admit that:

Not everyone who took part in the plays completely understood what they were doing. Neither did everyone in the audience.  But here it is, in all its gory glory as the collegium of dashing adventurers and explorers of the unknown reaches of history, known to the unwashed masses under the pseudonym TUSMØRKE, have yet again brought fresh fever from the stars.

With no small risk to their very lives, they have investigated the Mesopotamian idolatry that hid beneath what we, in our innocence, thought were simple songs and verses concerned with harmless folklore and creatures of fantasy. Concealed by a veil of ignorance, these ritualistic rhymes and summoning songs reveal themselves as portals to blissful and terrible realms. Astral worlds and delirious peaks tread forth from the inner places of mankind, and thus exert their power over the reality we share in our waking hours.

Our rhymes, riddles and games for children contain ancient elements. Could one find traces of past religious rituals in them? Seemingly innocent texts gain a more foreboding aspect when viewed in light of the human sacrifices, spiritual journeys and ecstatic trance rituals of Europe in times past. Cultural traits that are today associated with exotic voodoo rituals, Buddhism or cannibalistic head hunters of New Guinea were once widespread among our Celtic and Germanic tribes.

tusmørke video still PR

With their latest release “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 30th November, Norway’s TUSMØRKE have released a video for “Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen” , the opening  track from the album.

The stop motion video by Sondre Bergersen Mæland of Wild Man Movies can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/hqbZ6DauXyg

A
Commenting on the song , TUSMØRKE had this to say:

“Skattegravere i Grefsenåsen”  was written during the winter of 2015 and recorded in Det Ytre Rommet  during 2017 and 2018 by Benediktator. The inspiration for the lyrics came from a folk tale by Asbjørnsen & Moe,  as well as from the legends about children who find  silver under rocks in the wilderness. There are stories of poor people stepping on stones and hearing the clang of metal and finding buried and forgotten treasure. There are also stories of people hearing the sound, only to realise later what it must have been and going on the spend the rest of their lives searching for the spot, never to find it again and driven mad with frustration and the lust for coin.

“Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” itself is a a concept album that explores the rich history and mythology of Norway’s capital city Oslo. Vardøger are premonitions that precede an actual event. Utburder are infants who are abandoned in the woods at birth and whose haunting cries reverberate eerily through the night .

TUSMØRKE describe “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” as “the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted”, and, as the “vol 1” part of its title suggests, the album  is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.  It will be available in CD, Digital and Limited Edition vinyl formats with the  first LP being released on transparent orange vinyl (limited to 700 copies) with a 4 page lyric booklet and an A2 poster.

Eccentric and Prolific  are two adjectives that perfectly describe Norwegian Psychedelic Prog Folk Rockers  TUSMØRKE who are ready to release their third album in twelve months.  Titled “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1”, it will hit the streets on the 30th November on Karisma Records.

Being a band that moves fast, there is so much of TUSMØRKE’s material that gets left out, either through lack of space or lack of studio time, therefore, as the “vol 1” part of the album title suggests “Osloborgerlig Tusmørke: Vardøger og utburder vol. 1” is the first part of a series of compilations that feature songs, demos, outtakes and curios that didn’t QUITE make it onto TUSMØRKE’s albums themselves.

So here you have the album in a nutshell – the signs of things to come and the sounds of the unwanted.

As well as the upcoming releases, TUSMØRKE, who are known for their offbeat sense of humour,  are treating fans to a new video for a track from their previous album “Fjernsyn i farver”.  Directed by Aleksander U. Serigstad, the video, for the track “Tøyens Hemmelighet” is even more amusing and out there than their previous forays, and  sees the intrepid band members being lured into the Oslo Botanical Gardens by a mysterious figure who goes by the name of Zatek.
