Meer 2020 PR2

Karisma Records have welcomed alternative pop orchestra MEER into its capacious fold.

MEER started out as a duo known as TED GLEN EXTENDED, in Hamar, Norway, in 2008, and, since then, the duo have expanded considerably, to become,  what is today,  an eight-piece eclectic collective whose music is a mix of orchestral pop, classical music and progressive rock. With their grandiose string arrangements and polyphonic vocals, MEER’s sound is far from minimalistic and flows in seemingly constant motion.

Today’s lineup comprises Johanne Kippersund on vocals, Knut Kippersund on vocals, Eivind Strømstad on guitar, Åsa Ree on violin, Ingvild Nordstoga Eide on viola, Ole Gjøstøl on piano, Morten Strypet on bass and Mats Lillehaug on drums, and this is what the band had to say about their decision to join Karisma Records:

We are absolutely thrilled to be signing with Karisma Records! We have been working on this album for a long time, and are super excited to be teaming up with a record company with so much knowledge and passion for progressive music. To be a part of their great list of artists is an honour, and we couldn’t be happier.

Meer 2020 PR3

Karisma have not yet announced a release date for “Playing House”, which will be a follow up to MEER’s 2016, self-titled album. Recorded at the Ocean Sound Recording and Tanken, with producer Lars Gärtner Fremmerlid (EINAR STRAY ORCHESTRA) “Playing House”  will see MEER taking their prog pop one step further in both directions!

Endezzma PR 2020

Norwegian Black Metallers ENDEZZMA have signed a two-album deal with Dark Essence Records, joining a roster that includes some of the best known and established bands in the genre, as well as some of the upcoming artists that are making huge waves on the scene.

Formed in 2006 by frontman M. Shax, ENDEZZMA’s original lineup featured URGEHAL’s late, and much lamented, Trondr Nefas.  The duo, joined by other, experienced Norwegian musicians, quickly established a die-hard following, impressed by the band’s live appearances, which were imbued with  morbid overtones and an undercurrent of barely-suppressed viciousness.   “Alone”, ENDEZZMA’s aptly named first release,  cemented the band’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with. A band that went its own way, regardless of what others thought, or were doing.

The debut full-length “Erotik Nekrosis” appeared in 2012, and proved that ENDEZZMA was a band well-able to weave an old school atmosphere into  eerie, seductive, modern compositions, to produce  an album full of necro requiems.    It also marked the death of Trondr Nefas, which left  a vacuum within the band.  A  vacuum that was eventually filled by guitarist M. Malphas, which allowed ENDEZZMA to go on to explore mystical dark fields with their sophomore full-length “Arcane Abyss”.

Aside from Shax on vocals and Malphas on guitars, ENDEZZMA’s lineup includes Nihil on Rythm Guitar,  Skriu on  Drums and Aske on  Bass  –  a group of experienced musicians, hungry to bring their brand of brutal, fiercely intense, and yet aesthetically mystical approach, to Dark Essence Records, a label they know will understand where they are coming from, and where they want to go.

Commenting on what fans can expect from their third album, ENDEZZMA had this to say:

The upcoming album has been mixed and mastered by Tore Stjerna at the Necromorbus Studio in Stockholm. He Is well known for his great work on recent  WATAIN and MAYHEM albums, so we knew that we were in the hands of someone who would know exactly what we wanted.

Together with Dark Essence we intend to meet the high expectations that have been placed on us, and come out with an album of extremely strong material that will take fans into a mystical world of stellar darkness filled with mythical outcasts and characters.

Epic energy will burn the night!
It’s time to let the Stellar Darkness shine!
WE ARE ENDEZZMA

Wobbler PR 2020

When WOBBLER’s fifth album “Dwellers of the Deep” hits the streets on the 23rd October, it´s exactly three years since the Norwegian’s last release “From Silence to Somewhere”, and if anyone is expecting an identical album, they may have to think again, because, according to the band, the new album will be a different beast entirely:

When we set out planning the new album we agreed that we couldn´t make the same album over again. With “Silence” we did things without wanting to fit into a progressive box, and the process behind “Dwellers of the Deep” was even more along those lines. In that sense it´s more experimental.

Some songs contain rock blast outs while others provide the calm of a foggy morning in the woods; all have their place in what eventually became a thematic dive into the depths of human emotion. Our take on it, anyway.

“Dwellers of the Deep” promises to serve up an exciting blend of both carefully planned and passionately jammed compositions encompassing everything WOBBLER has done up to now. These new musical directions will no doubt further enhance the quintet’s aural idiosyncrasies, and solidify the band’s burgeoning stature as one of the most exciting and interesting bands on the global music scene, independent of genre.

The production is open, detailed, warm and punchy, making the soundscapes put together by Lars Fredrik Frøislie to an aural feast. “Dwellers of the Deep” will be available in Digipak CD and digital formats, as well as in four different 180 gram gatefold vinyl editions; black vinyl, two different limited edition coloured vinyls, and a limited edition transparent vinyl. All the limited editions come with a poster.

Side A contains two pieces at medium length showcasing the band´s mastery of dynamics and flow, with passages and themes veering from the scenic and serene to the downright rocking.

Side B opens with the welcome respite of four minutes serenity, cradling the listener in pastoral and mystic swathes of acoustic guitar, glockenspiel and gentle vocals before an album closing 19 minutes journey into the unknown with the band in full blast.

Track listing for “Dwellers of the Deep” is as follows:

  1. By the Banks (13:49)
  2. Five Rooms (08:28)
  3. Naiad Dreams (04:24)
  4. Merry Macabre (19:00)

Wobbler Dwellers AlbumArt PR

“Dwellers of the Deep” is now available to pre-order from:

Webshop: https://www.karismarecords.no/kar194-wobbler-dwellers-of-the-deep/
Bandcamp: https://wobbler.bandcamp.com/album/dwellers-of-the-deep
US Webshop: https://karismarecords.aisamerch.com/

Consisting of four distinctive pieces “Dwellers of the Deep” is a fine example of WOBBLER´s trademark creative whims and playful exuberance, and the band has offered an insight into what fans can expect from the album and what went into its creation:

The recording sessions were somewhat shaped partially by what was happening during the first months of Covid-19.  In a very Decameronesque way, we sent “histories” to each other from our hermitages, while the plague waited in the shadows outside. It contributed to a sense of meaningful gravity, making it crucial that the task at hand be fulfilled with our most sincere and unparalleled endeavours.

The lyrical themes on the album deal with human emotions, and the ongoing struggle between juxtaposed forces within the psyche. An introspective voyage amongst the realms of memories, feelings and instincts, where the light is brighter and the dark is darker. The concepts of wonder, longing and desperation permeates the histories told, and the currents from the deep are ever present. The final track, “Merry Macabre”, is a 19 minute suite taking the listener through aspects of the darker sides of WOBBLER´s sound. It probably sums up what we wanted to express this time around; songs with a weirder tint, an experimental, almost impressionist splitting of themes that at the same time provides a larger frame.

Formed in Hønefoss in 1999, WOBBLER’s lineup features Lars Fredrik Frøislie on keyboards and backing vocals, Martin Nordrum Kneppen on drums, percussion and recorder, Kristian Karl Hultgren on bass, Andreas Wettergreen Strømman Prestmo on vocals, guitar, glockenspiel, recorder and percussion and Geir Marius Bergom Halleland on lead guitar and backing vocals.

Zifir PR1

According to Black Metallers ZIFIR, the track “Ephemeral Idols”, which the band has chosen for its latest video, is “one of the most aggressive tracks” they have written and recorded thus far.  The band explains that it is a track whose lyrical themes are driven by the ultimate speed of the song, and are a direct attack on all that is deemed “holy”, with  the video being a means for ZIFIR to visualise their approach towards each religion.

The video itself, once again produced by ZIFIR, explores the idea that one of societies preoccupations today is arguing about which temple belongs to which religion – one of the most obvious cases being that of the recent polemic surrounding the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. In fact, Hagia Sofia is one of the various  places of worship of different denominations that feature in the video.

Since its formation in 2006 by Onur Önok  and O.S. ZIFIR, has never compromised either in terms of vision or direction, with the band’s lyrics embodying philosophy, anti-religion and nihilism, which are acknowledged as being amongst of the basic tenets of Black Metal .

Hailed as one of the most important bands to emerge from the Norwegian prog scene over the past decades, AIRBAG  was formed in the mid 2000’s by five high school class mates, which included two of today’s members Asle Tostrup (vocals) and Bjørn Riis (guitars).  AIRBAG is a band that is able to blend diverse musical styles and sounds, with a strong narrative listening experience. Today’s lineup also includes Henrik Bergan Fossum (drums) and “A Day at the Beach” is AIRBAG’s first album as a trio, and which also features talented guest musicians including WOBBLER’s Kristian Hultgren.

Airbag 2020 PR3

Regarding their latest album, AIRBAG recently had this to say:

The album is the result of a strong collaboration between all three of us. Having lost two original members since our last album, we were forced to rethink how we write and create new music, but it also allowed us to venture into something new that turned out to be very inspiring.

Lyrically, “A Day at the Beach” is very much a story of us and them, told by a husband, father and brother leaving his family behind into an unknown future. It’s the contrast between the desperate individual struggling to survive and people in power observing at a safe distance.

Ruphus Flying Colours PR1

Karisma Records is set to release “Flying Colours”,  the next album in its planned series of six full-length releases that makes up the entire back-catalogue of Norwegian Prog Legends RUPHUS.

Originally released in 1978, “Flying Colours” is unusual for RUPHUS, a band used to an ever-shifting lineup, in that it featured the same musicians as on its predecessor “Inner Voice”, namely Kjell Larsen on guitar, Asle Nilsen on bass), Sylvi Lillegaard on vocals, Thor Bendiksen and drums and Jan Simonsen  on keyboards.

By the time “Flying Colours” hit the streets for the first time, RUPHUS had been settled in Germany for such a long time, extensively touring Continental Europe, to the extent that even Norwegian fans assumed the band was German.   It is, nevertheless, a prime example of Proggy Norwegian 70’s Jazz Rock, firmly cementing the band’s reputation as one of the leading lights of the European Jazz Rock Scene.

Recorded at the  Rosenborg Studios in  Oslo and engineered by Hans Petter Danielsen,  the new release of “Flying Colours has once again be been remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc) who is working  with new digital transfers from the original master tapes which are stored in the Norwegian National Archives for posterity.

With artwork by Jan Ole Norum  tracklisting for “Flying Colours is as follows:

  1. Foodlover’s Diet
  2. Frysja
  3. Early Riser
  4. Flying Colours
  5. The Rivulet
  6. Joy
  7. Moody Moments
    Part One: The Moment
    Part Two: Gloom
    Part Three: Exaltation

“Flying Colours” will be released in CD, LP and Limited Edition Purple Vinyl (250 copies only) on the 7th August, and is now available to pre-order from:

https://www.karismarecords.no

As a bonus to fans of Norwegian Prog in general, and RUPHUS in particular, Karisma Records will revisit the band’s debut album “New Born Day”, which it re-released in March of this year, by making available a limited edition white vinyl version.  It is an album widely regarded as one of the best albums to have emerged from the  Norwegian Prog scene, so this version will come as a pleasant addition to any fans collection.

“New Born Day”, which will also be released on the 7th August, is now available to pre-order from:

Additionally.  RUPHUS  fans who thought they’d missed out on the “Ranshart” limited edition yellow vinyl  will be happy to hear that Karisma have found a few copies, which are available now from https://www.karismarecords.no/shop/artist/ruphus/ruphus-ranshart-yellow-vinyl/

Ruphus Ranshart Yellow PR

A versatile and ground-breaking band, RUPHUS, with their long, melodic, compositions,  and multiple, intertwined themes, were regarded as being the Norwegian equivalent of YES, not just in style, but also in skill.   The band’s revolving door policy as regards their lineup meant that, as members left and others joined, RUPHUS’ sound changed accordingly,  taking them from their early days playing hard progressive rock, to becoming one of the leaders in the field of jazz rock. Only Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) would go on to play on all of RUPHUS’ albums.

Zifir PR1

For their new video release, Black Metallers ZIFIR have chosen the track “Empire of Worms”,  from their latest album “Demoniac Ethics”, which was released on Duplicate Records in January of this year.  It is, according to the band, a track that:

Represents the anti religious and nihilistic perspective of ZİFİR. The song itself is a sinister reminder of death, especially for those who are in search of a better “afterlife” by praying behind the walls. The state of having worms swarming inside, rather than the peaceful endless rest at any form. The lyrics are self explanatory…

“Beneath the ground filled with bones
The heaven is bare and empty
Dig up the graves
You will see the empire of worms

 Nothingness of the past
Nourished the God in them”

Since the band was first formed by Onur Önok  and O.S. back in 2006, ZIFIR has been clear and uncompromising in its direction and vision.  As exemplified by their lyrics, it is a vision that embodies some of the basic tenets of the Black Metal genre –  philosophy, anti-religion and nihilism.

Vulture Industries Live Stream PR1

There are virtually zero good things that have come out of the current pandemic, but one of the positives is that fans the world-over, who would normally only be able to watch their favourite bands on stage via poor-quality fan-filmed footage,  are now getting to watch the bands perform via live streaming, using multiple cameras and high quality sound.

One of the bands who will be communicating with their fans this way is Norway’s VULTURE INDUSTRIES, who have joined up with photographer Jarle Hovda Moe, who is running a series of professionally filmed,  live-streaming concerts, via his Medstraum series,  to film their show.

The show will be filmed at a local Bergen historic location, the Vestindien, which was the town’s last public brothel, and will take place at 22:00 CET on Saturday 20th June,

Fans will be able to watch the event live on Facebook on the VULTURE INDUSTRIES page at https://www.facebook.com/vultureindustries/ , on the band’s website at http://www.vulture-industries.net/ and on YouTube.

Exact streaming links will be available closer to the time, and all information and updates will be published on the Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/268027394402784/

Commenting on the concert, frontman Bjørnar E. Nilsen had this to say:

For no other reasons than the anguishing prospect of being bored to death by the dull reality of covid-19 and a deep philanthropic urge to keep you all amused, we give you VULTURE INDUSTRIES live from the historic location Vestindien. Now a museum, this was once Bergen’s own House of the Rising Sun. For this special evening we will dub it House of the Irregular and we invite you all to join us by the Bergen docks for an hour of musical rarities new and old.

The show is absolutely free for everyone, but Charity is endorsed and appreciated, but, we emphasise, not obligatory via  Vipps: 92266316 or Paypal: paypal.me/VultureIndustries

Special merchandise, designed by the Romanian musician and multi-media artist Costin Chioreanu especially for the event is available to purchase from https://vultureindustries.bigcartel.com

Vulture Industries Live Stream PR2

With a career spanning over a decade and with hundreds  of shows under their belts, Norwegian Progressive Metallers  VULTURE INDUSTRIES  are  well known both for the technical skill of their lineup, which comprises Øyvind Madsen and  Eivind Huse on Guitars, Tor Helge Gjengedal on Drums, Kyrre Teigen on Bass and Bjørnar E. Nilsen on Vocals,  and the eccentric and somewhat manic antics of frontman Nilsen, whose on-stage weirdness has garnered a multitude of fans for the band over the years.
