Now that the release date of the 10th June for “Disconnected” is very close, Norwegian Prog Rockers AIRBAG have released a third video teaser for their fourth full-length album, which will be out on Karisma Records. With a lineup consisting of Bjørn Riis (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, bass, co-producer), Asle Tostrup (vocals, keyboards, programming, producer, graphic design), Henrik Fossum (drums), Jørgen Hagen (programming, keyboards) and Anders Hovdan (bass), AIRBAG was Formed in 2004. Since then the band’s reputation has gained a solid, and ever increasing, following amongst prog fans the world-over, whilst their three previous full-length releases, “Identity” (2009), “All Right Removed” (2011) and “The Greatest Show on Earth” (2013), have received much critical acclaim.

Produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis, and with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes once again on board, “Disconnected” sees AIRBAG continuing to develop the sound that blends different musical styles with soaring guitars and soulful vocals to create lush soundscapes . AIRBAG’s music has been described as “scenic, epic rock”, and it is that, and more.

“Disconnected” takes as its theme the sense of alienation that exists between the individual and society and each of the six compositions depicts the state of feeling on ‘the outside’ and out of touch with oneself and those around us. Artwork for the album is designed by vocalist Tostrup

When renowned Romanian multi-media artist Costin Chioreanu says of his new video for pioneering experimental rockers VIRUS “I went beyond all my boundaries and I have a feeling I touched a bit of insanity” you know that it’s going to be something unique. Having made his mark not only as a graphic artist, but also as a stage artist, musician, animator and movie maker at a relatively young age, Chioreanu’s new animated video, for the track “Rogue Fossil” from VIRUS’ upcoming album “Memento Collider”, is the latest in a series of collaborations with artists from Karisma Records, and its sister label Dark Essence Records. For over a decade now VIRUS have maintained their status as one of the most unique bands to have emerged from Norway’s burgeoning progressive music scene, and “Memento Collider” sees the band returning to their original three-piece lineup of Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide on guitars and vocals, Petter “Plenum” Berntsen on bass and Einar “Einz” Sjursø on drums. “Mayhem In Blue”, the new album form Psychedelic Prog Black Metallers HAIL SPIRIT NOIR, is set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 14th October. The album will be the third full-length release for the Greek trio, whose debut album “Pneuma” appeared in 2012, followed by 2014’s “”Oi Magoi”.

Commenting on what fans can expect from “Mayhem In Blue”, the band had this to say: “It’s been two and a half years since the release of our last album, and with “Mayhem In Blue” we have set out to express our more aggressive side, without sacrificing any of the psychedelic melodies that are an integral part of what we like to call HAIL SPIRIT NOIR’ s “weird black sound”. If anything, in fact, the sound is more enticing and trippy than ever.

“Featuring the mixing talents of Dimitris Douvras (ROTTING CHRIST etc) and the exceptional mastering abilities of Alan Douches (CHELSEA WOLFE, MOTORHEAD etc), we feel that the result is an album that elevates our signature psychoprog black metal sound to new levels”.

Formed in Thessaloniki in 2010, HAIL SPIRIT NOIR’s lineup is composed of Haris (KATAVASIA, TRANSCENDING BIZARRE?) on Synths, Theoharis (TRANSCENDING BIZARRE?, REX MUNDI,) on guitars and vocals, and J Demian (BLACKDRAWN, DOL AMMAD, WARDRUM TRANSCENDING BIZARRE?) on bass and acoustic guitars. Over the years both bands have taken the basic premises of their respective genres, and, whilst remaining true to them, have consistently kept them fresh by expanding and experimenting, sometimes taking them in directions that have surprised fans, but always maintaining the highest quality in terms of writing and musicianship. Both Kvarforth and Hoest are, in fact, acknowledged to be two of the most exciting and dynamic live performers today.

ESOTERIC’S “THE PERNICIOUS ENIGMA” FINALLY FINDS ITS WAY ONTO VINYL

Just short of twenty years after its release, ESOTERIC’s sophomore full-length album “The Pernicious Enigma” has finally found its way onto vinyl courtesy of Aesthetic Death Records. Recorded in 1996 at Rich Bitch Studios, and originally released as a double CD in 1997, the vinyl version of “The Pernicious Enigma” is available as a triple gatefold LP strictly limited to 600 copies and can be bought directly from the band’s Webstore at http://www.esotericuk.net/Store

Having never been completely satisfied with the original mix of “The Pernicious Enigma”, the Experimental Doomsters decided to transfer the album from the original multitrack tapes in order to be able to remix the tracks and bring out some of the details that had been buried or subdued in the original release. The remixing and remastering was carried out during 2015/16 by ESOTERIC’s Greg Chandler at his Priory Studios (http://www.prioryrecordingstudios.co.uk/ ). Now, without actually having changed the overall feel of the album, and with a level of clarity and definition that far surpasses the original, “The Pernicious Enigma” is much closer to the band’s original vision. Artwork is by Simon Phillips.

Only one more of ESOTERIC’s six full length albums now remains to be released on vinyl, and it is anticipated that “Metamorphogenesis” will also appear in LP format in the future.

ESOTERIC are currently working on what will be their seventh full-length album, and a follow up to 2011’s critically acclaimed “Paragon of Dissonance”. Eschewing any serious touring whilst they focus on the preparations and recording for the new album, the band are planning to play a few one-off shows and festivals this year. When Irish Doomsters MOURNING BELOVETH released their sixth full-length album “Rust and Bone” at the end of 2015, one track stood out in particular, not only because its lyrical content was open to speculation, but also because musically it was such a departure from the band’s usual heavy, doom-laden sound, and Death Metal inspired vocals.

The track in question was “A Terrible Beauty Is Born”, a poignant, and hauntingly beautiful, acoustic interpretation of the famous W. B. Yeats poem. It was a track that also saw vocalist Darren Moore take a backseat and guitarist/backing vocalist Frank Brennan step to the fore to give voice to the song that had been in his mind for a long time.

When the band joined forces with John Mulvaney to create a video for “A Terrible Beauty Is Born”, and released it on the 24th April this year, which was the date that marked the Centenary of the Easter Uprising, there were more than a few who questioned what Yeats would have thought of his words being interpreted by a metal band, and some who questioned whether the video, and indeed the song itself, was the band’s tribute to those who died in the rebellion that was to shape the future of Ireland. This, despite MOURNING BELOVETH having made it very clear that it was a tribute to all who had fought and died for freedom throughout the world.

Commented the band: “We were at rehearsals one day, talking about the questions that fans kept asking about “A Terrible Beauty Is Born”, and it occurred to us that it might be a good idea to informally film ourselves giving our unscripted thoughts about what lies behind the track, the recording process, how such a different sound came about, and what it might lead to in the future. YouTube seems to be the “go to” place for music fans these days, and it looked like it might be a much more interesting way to do it, rather than just writing an explanation. We are grateful to John Mulvaney who kindly gave us a hand turning it into something coherent, and you can see the results, which we have titled “A Terrible Interview Is Born”, below and at https://youtu.be/atfJvCiDRSM

“Disconnected” takes AIRBAG’s trademark blending of musical styles, combined with lush soundscapes, soaring guitars and soulful vocals, a step further along the band’s musical journey, whilst lyrically each of the six tracks explore the sense of alienation that exists between the individual and society

As guitarist Bjorn Riis explains: “Killer was one of the first songs written for “Disconnected”. I had this idea of this ruthless corporate guy who uses everyone to gain success. Sort of Bateman from American Psycho meets Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko. He’s outside, or disconnected from, the rules of our society”.

“Musically, Killer is slightly different from what we’ve done before. There’s more emphasis on the drums, different rhythm patterns and electronic elements, and it really was a band effort, where everyone was contributing ideas and trying out new stuff”.

“Disconnected“, sees Airbag once again team up with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes. The album is produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis, and, as always, the artwork is designed by vocalist Tostrup.

Formed in 2004 AIRBAG’s lineup consists of Bjørn Riis (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, bass, co-producer), Asle Tostrup (vocals, keyboards, programming, producer, graphic design), Henrik Fossum (drums), Jørgen Hagen (programming, keyboards) and Anders Hovdan (bass). With the release date coming ever closer, Karisma Records have debuted a track from VIRUS’ fourth full-length album “Memento Collider”. Undoubtedly one of the most unique bands to come out of Norway, VIRUS have, for over a decade now, developed their otherworldly style and garnered themselves a large following that spans both the metal and rock scene world-wide. “Memento Collider” heralds VIRUS’ return to their original 3-piece lineup of Carl-Michael “Czral” Eide on guitars and vocals, Petter “Plenum” Berntsen on bass and Einar “Einz” Sjursø on drums. This time the iconic trio have taken VIRUS’ idiosyncratic trademark sound of unusual flowing bass lines, experimental riffs and groovy rhythms a few steps further, to create a sound that is still very much experimental and progressive in the true sense of those definitions, but at the same time is catchy and melodic.

Set for release on the 3rd June and recorded at the Amper Tone Studios in Oslo, “Memento Collider” marks a spectacular return for VIRUS, where they once again demonstrate what the true essence of progressive rock is all about!
