NIKLAS KVARFORTH’s “When Prozac No Longer Helps” is set to be published in French by the Camion Noir Publishing House on the 19th of January. The French edition, titled “Quand Le Prozac Ne Suffit Plus”, contains the lyrics to SHINING’s songs and follows on the heels of the English and Turkish translations. With a cover photo by Natasha Mediator of Haste Malaise Photography, “Quand Le Prozac Ne Suffit Plus” is available from http://www.camionnoir.com/
Having tired of the shambolic, and mostly completely inaccurate translations of his lyrics that can be found on the internet, Kvarforth translated the texts from the original Swedish into English and published the first edition of “When Prozac No Longer Helps”, which sold out virtually immediately and is now in its third edition. The availability of the English translation of SHINING’s lyrics opened up the way for other publishers who showed an interest in translating the work into their own languages.
As always, though, Kvarforth has exacting standards when it comes to all things SHINING, and chooses his collaborators with care. For the French Edition he chose to work with long-time friend Nicolas Castelaux, who, in the ’90’s, earned notoriety as the “Vampire of Paris”. Having served a twelve year sentence Casatelaux went on to establish Camion Noir, a publishing house that specialises in the Occult, Dark History and True Crime. The two met up recently during the band’s recent French tour and Kvarforth agreed to the publication on the condition that Castelaux himself handled the translation.

2015 proved to be an extremely successful year in terms of critically acclaimed releases for Dark Essence Records, and the Norwegian label has decided to kick off 2016 with a tasty re-release, in digital format, of the debut full-length album from Icelandic Progressive Doom Metallers MOMENTUM. “Fixation, at Rest” is set for release on the 15th January, and the track ” Prosthetic Sea ” from the album can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/dark-essence-records/momentum-prosthetic-sea
WIth the band’s sophomore full-length album “The Freak Is Alive” finding its way into a plethora of “Best of 2015” lists, it’s not such a surprising idea to let fans experience an album they may have missed the first time around. Originally released in 2010, with the band’s then-lineup of Hörður Ólafsson on Vocals & Bass, Ingvar Sæmundsson on Guitar & Backing Vocals, Kristján Einar Guðmundsson on Drums and Erling Orri Baldursson on Guitar. The ten-track album was recorded at Island Studios by Axel Árnason and Studio Njallinn by Momentum in 2009 and mixed and mastered by Axel Árnason at Studio ReFlex in 2010
Artwork for “Fixation, at Rest” is by Hörður Ólafsson . Track listing as follows:
01 – Intro
02 – Metamorphose
03 – Holding Back
04 – Red Silence
05 – The Conduits Lead
06 – As The Skies Break
07 – Prosthetic Sea
08 – The Eye That Leads the Way
09 – Inspiration
10 – Fixation, at Rest
With “Fixation, at Rest”, MOMENTUM had very much left behind them their Black/Death Metal roots and developed a sound and an identity that is distinctly their own, and which uses not just music and lyrics, but also frontman Hörður Ólafsson’s idiosyncratic artwork as an integral part of the band’s overall concept .
Now a trio, MOMENTUM’s lineup comprises Kristján on Drums, Holaf on Vocalsand Bass , and Ingvar on Guitar and Vocals. It is a band whose sound is best described as the merging of atmospheric post-rock, reminiscent of ISIS and CULT OF LUNA, together with a level of bone-crushing heaviness broken up by soft singing and relaxed clean passages, intense vocals layered over discordant, staccato bursts, and mingling with eerie sound textures that explode into high-impact power chords, which bring to mind the work of NEUROSIS.
A video of MOMENTUM playing the title track from their debut album “Fixation, at Rest” live at the Airwaves festival can be seen below and at http://youtu.be/hobUiT8qEvo
Seven years after the release of their last album, SULPHUR have once again signed with Norway’s Dark Essence Records, and are ready to announce details of what will be the Experimental Black/Death Metallers third full-length album. Titled “Omens of Doom”, the seven-track album is expected to hit the streets in February 2016.
With artwork by Romanian artist and designer Costin Chorineu, tracklisting for “Omens of Doom” is as follows:
The Force of Our Fall
Gathering Storms
The Devils Pyre
Plague and Pestilence
Omens of Doom
Rise of the Mushroom Clouds
Alt Svartner
Formed in 2000 with current and former members of bands such as GORGOROTH, ENSLAVED, AETERNUS and VULTURE INDUSTRIES, SULHPUR’s demo “A Relic For The Damned” demonstrated the direction the band would be taking, which lies between Death and Black Metal with a progressive twist, but the band lay dormant for a few years, until they returned with a second demo and an altered lineup and eventually signed to Osmose Productions for the release of their debut studio album “Cursed Madness” in 2007.
By 2009 SULPHUR had found their home with Dark Essence Records, and released their critically acclaimed sophomore album “Thorns in Existence”. Now, with a lineup that includes Thomas Skinlo Høyven on Vocals, Øyvind Madsen on guitars, keys and programming, Vegard Hovland on bass, Erik Hæggernes on drums and guitarist Martin Lynn Ytrøy who replaces VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ Eivind Huse, SULPHUR is back with a brand new album that features guest appearances from producer and VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ frontman Bjornar Erevik Nilsen as well as Eivind Huse.
SULPHUR’s next live appearance will be on the 19th February at Blastfest in Bergen, Norway.
Norway’s RAGNAROK, a band that has been active for over twenty years on the Black Metal scene, have completed work on their eighth full-length album, which is set to be released in early 2016 on Agonia Records. Recorded, mixed and mastered at the Endarker Studio in Sweden by MARDUK’s Devo, the album will be titled “Psychopathology”.
Founder and frontman Jontho had this to say about fans can expect from it: “Your wait will finally come to an end in 2016 when we release “Psychopathology”, our eighth full-length album. I can say with absolute certainty that this album will be the best in RAGNAROK’s career to date. It is the result of dedication, hard work, and the musical skills of our lineup, and is the next stage in the band’s development, both musically and lyrically. “Psychopathology” is about to unleash total chaos upon you as it invites you to dive deeper into the dark recesses of the human mind”.
This will be the first album in RAGNAROK’s history that doesn’t feature founder Jontho on drums. Having taken over the role of frontman, his place behind the drum kit is taken by DAUDEN drummer Malignant, who joined the band in 2014. Bolverk, is on guitars, and DezeptiCunt makes his swansong appearance with the band on bass as he leaves to concentrate on new projects.
Commenting about the band’s future plans and DezeptiCunt’s departure, Jontho said: ” Shortly after completing the recording of our latest album, our bass player DezeptiCunt informed us that he would be leaving the band to concentrate on a new project. As a recording and touring band, RAGNAROK requires 100% commitment from its members and at this point neither he nor RAGNAROK felt that he would be able to give both bands that necessary commitment. We would like to thank him for the eight years he was with us and wish him all the best for the future.
“Going forward we will be concentrating all our energies on promoting the new album, and plan to take our time choosing the right bass player to take his place, so in the meantime we will be using a session musician for the upcoming live shows”.
DezeptiCunt himself explained ” I have had eight good years with RAGNAROK, both in the studio and live, but the time has come, as indeed it does for many musicians, to move on and explore new avenues. I know it might seem strange that I announced my departure from the band just as they are about to release their new album, but the opportunity came up for me to join a brand new project whose music I liked immediately, and whose ideas greatly appealed to me, and of course, being able to join them right at the start just as they begin rehearsals to take the band live was something I very much wanted to be a part of.
“At the same time I felt that I wouldn’t be able to give 100% of my attention to each of the two demanding projects, and therefore I decided that it would be fairer for all concerned if I was to cut my ties with RAGNAROK straight away, so that they can move forward without any uncertainty. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to wish RAGNAROK all the best for the future, and much success for the new album”.
RAGNAROK’s next confirmed live appearances are at Sequane Fest VIII in France in March and Steelfest Open Air in Finland in May.

SELVANS, a band known for combining music, lyrics and aesthetics in such a way as to recreate the folklore of Italy’s ancient peoples, released their debut full-length album “Lupercalia” on Avantgarde Music in October of this year. Recorded at the Faunalia Studios and in Patrizio Tamborriello’s Soluzioni Audio, the album’s lineup comprises Selvans Haruspex on keyboards, traditional instruments, vocals and programming, and Sethlans Fulguriator on guitars and bass.
Unusually, the CD version of the album is released in A5 format in order to better display the artwork of Diletta of E.B.A. Art, whose collaboration with the band has brought to life the original designs created by frontman Selvans Haruspex. Also available digitally, as well as a Limited Edition boxed version which sold out in 60 hours, “Lupercalia” is composed of six tracks coming in at an average of ten minutes each, and is a follow up to the five-track EP “Clangores Plenilunio”, which was also released on Avantgarde Music in February of this year.
A video tribute to SELVANS co-founder the late Jonny Morelli, who was tragically killed in a motor bike accident, and which shows the wild landscapes that the drummer loved so much, whilst his words, which were written for the song ‘Lupercale’ itself, have been transformed into drawings by Davide ‘DARTWORKS – drawstroy‘ Mancini , can be seen at and below https://youtu.be/AJDfmpYFa4Q
Norwegian Viking Metallers HELHEIM are streaming the whole of their eighth full-length album “raunijaR” ahead of the 4th December release date on Dark Essence Records. You can listen to “raunijaR”, which is being streamed exclusively on Terrorizer Magazine, at http://www.terrorizer.com/news/helheim-stream-new-album-raunijar
The follow up to 2011’s “Heiðindómr ok Mótgangr”, “raunijaR” brings to a close the “Åsgards Fall ” storyline that began with the EP of that name in 2010, and also completes the themes that have woven their way in and out of HELHEIM’s music since the very beginning. Featuring ALFAHANNE’s Pehr Skjoldhammer and Norwegian musician William Hut on guest vocals, as well as additional guest musicians on violin, piano and horns, the album was recorded at the Conclave & Earshot Studio by VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ Bjørnar Nilsen and mastered by ENSLAVED’s Herbrand Larsen. Artwork for the album is by HELHEIM’s H’grimnir of www.coverart.no. Track listing on “raunijaR” as follows:
Over their twenty plus years of existence, HELHEIM’s lineup of V’gandr on bass and vocals, H’grimnir on guitar and vocals, Hrymr on drums and Noralf on guitars have made use not just of story lines taken from folklore, but they have enhanced these with the use of traditional instruments to give a realistic Viking feel to their epic music, which many acknowledge to be one of the most authentic , if not the most authentic, in the genre. They have spent their time wisely between their last release and the recording on “raunijaR” , honing and developing HELHEIM’s dark and atmospheric sound, and further enhancing it with additional clean vocals by V’gandr , which now allows the two vocalists to combine their clean vocals to add yet another interesting new dimension to the band’s sound.
V’gandr recently gave his insights on the new album: “The opening track “Helheim 9” is actually the last in the line of the HELHEIM tracks where Hrymr in particular has been the creative force. He has combined his unique creativity and symbolism in a way that overwhelms everything that came before, and the result is a truly fitting closure.
“The title track “raunijaR” continues on from Helheim’s “Heiðindómr ok Mótgangr”, and has a relentlessly driving sound that showcases the confrontational, yet familiar, black metal sound in the vein of “Dualitet og Ulver”. “Åsgards Fall” Parts 3 and 4 will be the final and vital link in the completion of the theme that was begun in both lyrical and musical terms with the “Åsgards Fall” MCD. Closing the album is “Odr”, a solemn track that gives the album an ending full of the grandeur and respect that it deserves”.

NORDJEVEL, which translated means “Northern Devil”, was founded by frontman Doedsadmiral (SVARTELDER, DOEDSVANGR) and guitarist Nord (FATAL IMPACT, TVANGESTE, BYRDI) earlier this year. The Norwegian duo was quickly joined by Sweden’s Fredrik Widigs (MARDUK) on drums. The band’s arrival on the scene immediately elicited a large amount of interest not just from fans, but also from labels who were keen to add a band with such a formidable lineup to their rosters.
Not only is it a lineup that has a great deal of experience behind it, it is also one whose members jelled immediately, both in terms of their views on Black Metal and in their ability to harness their respective musical talents to produce the distinctive NORDJEVEL sound. Whilst Widigs’ commitment to his other projects pretty much preclude him. from committing to appearing live with the band on anything other than the odd occasion, he is, nevertheless a full-time and committed studio member.
Bergen-based Karisma Records have announced that they have added another talented young band to their ever growing label. The band in question is SHAMAN ELEPHANT, who describe their musical style as Psychedelic Rock with elements from other genres such as Jazz and Prog Rock, and who aim to deliver energetic performances both in the studio and on the stage with their heavy riffs, flowing melodies and improvisations.
With a sound influenced by the ’70’s and drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as JIMI HENDRIX, The MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA and MOTORPSYCHO to STEELY DAN and BUSHMAN’s REVENGE, SHAMAN ELEPHANT’s lineup comprises Eirik Sejersted Vognstølen on vocals and guitar, Jard Hole (LINT) on drums, Ole-Andreas Sæbø Jensen on bass, and Jonas Særsten (ex-TIEBREAKER) on keyboards.
SHAMAN ELEPHANT are expecting to enter the studio to record their debut full-length album in the spring of 2016. This will be the follow up to 2015’s “More”, a three-track EP which was released digitally through Lyd iLøo Records.
